The following yr I had higher income. They had all necessary paperwork from me in Feb. April 12th I got a call from them stating I needed to pay over 30k in taxes for the year...by the 15th! My taxable income was approx $115k. After clearing my savings and more, I paid it. I asked for a meeting with the owner and they agreed. After my research, I learned they could have done A LOT to give me deductions/write offs. Filing as an S Corp, mileage, 401K, charities, etc. I asked the if these things were done, would it have put me in a lower tax bracket. He said yes, for sure. The next tax bracket down was not far away at all and would have literally saved me & my family thousands. They just PLUGGED NUMBERS. No advice or guidance whatsoever, which is the reason I chose an accountant instead of an H&R Block, for the guidance. My fault for not asking questions? Possibly. I was offered ZERO guidance. Worst experience I ever had. I was literally sick to my stomach. I could have almost put my daughter through college with that money. Total incompetence. Let me be clear: They did not try and find me ANY deductions aside from my two children. Those of you who have been in business longer than me know that there are many many deductions as a business owner. The next year my income was slightly higher. I paid 6k total because my new accountant actually cared about finding me deductions and fought for me to keep the money I earned..
