This was such a great event! Everyone that worked there was SO friendly and attentive. I really appreciated the manager telling us some history about Bonefish Grill and the dishes we were served. I also loved that we all sat at one long table. It made it easy to talk with some new people! Now, the food. I have three words: Bang Bang Shrimp. I hadn't been to a Bonefish Grill in years, but I remembered how much I used to love the Bang Bang Shrimp. I'm happy to report that it was even more delicious than I remembered! The calamari was also super delicious to start with. I didn't have the beef sliders, but my friends enjoyed them! The cioppino was delicious. I liked how the sauce didn't overpower the flavors of the seafood. Lastly, the brownie. Oh, that fudgy, delicious brownie. That was one of the best brownies I've had in a long time. The drinks that were paired with each course went really well with the food too! My favorite was the lavender lemonade cocktail. Thank you Yelp and Bonefish Grill for a great event! I'm looking forward to going back sometime soon!

This was one of the best events I've ever been to. The private table was intimate and comfortable. Full disclosure, I don't eat seafood. I didn't realize it would be mostly seafood. So all opinions on those dishes come from my partner. Calamari - crisp and flavorful, he loved the sauce. Bang bang shrimp - I thought he was going to steal the entire bowl. He loved the flavors and said the shrimp tasted very fresh. Sliders - I ate these and it was so hard not to grab another! They were cooked perfectly and just delicious! Cioppino - he loved all but the scallops. He finished my plate and his own. The lavender lemonade was a bit odd the first sip and then incredible the rest. It was hard to believe there was alcohol in it because it was so smooth. The wine was a bit dry for me but still bursting with flavor. The espresso martini sounded weird but it worked!! Perfect blend of coffee and booze! The flourless brownie was so moist and chocolate-y and the ice cream just accented it beautifully. The highlight of the evening was the staff. Fastt, friendly, and professional. They all seemed truly happy to have us as guests. My dining partner can't wait to go back and try more and I NEED those sliders!

Wow! Saying that Bonefish Grill exceeded my expectations would be an understatement. This Yelp event was absolutely spectacular! The staff was so kind and attentive to all of our needs. Everything they did, they did with care and love. The employees explained their rationale behind each item which allowed us to connect with the employees and understand the purpose on a deeper level. We started with the Lavender Mint Lemonade which was quite piquant - this cocktail was the most refreshing start to the evening. Before the appetizers were presented, we were provided with a champagne toast which was a fabulous addition to the night. After toasting with my fellow Yelp Elites, we had the opportunity to dig in! The Bang Bang Shrimp was hands down my favorite appetizer, but I also enjoyed the Wagyu Sliders immensely. The sauce covering the Bang Bang Shrimp was sweet and slightly spicy, and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. I am not a fair judge when it comes to Calamari because it is not an appetizer preference of mine, but I have to admit that this was the best Calamari I've ever consumed! The Cioppino was paired with a Malbec. The Cioppino was seasoned beautifully; the lobster was my favorite component. I can't believe an actual portion would be twice the size! Finally, my favorite course... DESSERT! This flourless, Macadamia Nut Brownie was to die for. The ice cream and raspberry sauce were the perfect pair to this melt-in-your-mouth brownie. I could've eaten these all evening long. I cannot emphasize how impressed I am with this event. From the staff to the drinks to the food, I left beyond satisfied. Additionally, the thank you note at the end of the evening was the cherry on top. I am so grateful that I was able to attend this event and want to thank the Yelp team and the staff of Bonefish Grill. I cannot wait to return!!

Wow! All I can say this was another Elite event that did not disappoint and was fantastic from start to finish. Staff was so wonderful and impressive the entire evening. I have always loved bonefish as our once a year date night spot to splurge at for a special occasion, so I was so excited to hear that this was going to be an elite event. Apps Starting off with the Lavendar Lemonade was probably my favorite thing of the evening-please do not take this off your menu because its my new favorite drink!! So refreshing. Bang bang shrimp is always fantastic and keeps you coming back for me. Enjoyed that a lot. I haven't had the Wagyu sliders ever and I had a second one because they were so amazing. Calamari was also good but I liked the sauce the most that came with it. If I had to rate my favorites in order I would choose the shrimp, sliders, then calamari. Main I was apprehensive about trying the Cioppino, but to my surprise I ate most of it! I enjoyed the flavors and it was a bold and unique dish. I think the wine pairing went great with this as well and was delicious. The bread was a nice touch! Dessert The macadamia nut brownie and espresso martini really topped off the evening. I would get this every time I stopped in if I could! Pure bliss. Even though I was full I could have eaten two brownies and sucked down two martinis haha. Great staff and great service! So thankful for a wonderful evening and can't wait to return!!

What an event! I have been to many over the years and this by far was one of my favorites. What made this event so great was the staff, the food, and the overall atmosphere. When we entered the room, there was a beautiful display set up of all the treats we would be enjoying throughout the evening. The bartenders were ready and serving up their first round: the lavender mint lemonade. This was by far my favorite drink of the night. Flavorful, not too sweet, and very refreshing. It's served in a cool slanted glass, as well! We paired this first drink with calamari, wagyu sliders, and their famous bang bang shrimp. The portions were shareable, but hefty! The main course was a cioppino that was just released onto their menu! Featuring all the seafood favorites in a red sauce, this dish boasted flavor! This was paired with a lovely Malbec that complimented the seafood well. Finally, we ended the night with a flourless Macademia nut brownie with ice cream that was OUT OF THIS WORLD. I do not have a gluten allergy, but I would order this any day! So much flavor. This was paired with an excellent espresso martini! What an awesome menu. I can't say enough about how amazing the staff was. They are passionate about the quality and experience every customer received and they knocked it out of the park. Thank you for having us and for your lovely thank you note. It really was top-notch.

Arrived early with my friend/guest. Patio was already in place with drinks at the ready. What's Hot - Quality. Yummers! The bang bang shrimp and cioppino were spicy, but it had the slow creep effect, which I loved. The spiciness gave an additional kick of flavor, but wasn't overpowering. Additionally, the fried food- calamari and bang bang shrimp- were lightly breaded and not overly breaded. Whenever I have fried food, the amount and thickness of the batter is important. If food is lightly breaded, it does not hide the flavor. Additionally, all the food was nicely flavored and seasoned. My friend and I really enjoyed the cioppino! The tomato broth wasn't overpowering and we could taste the seafood. - Service. Excellent! Everyone was nice, friendly, and helpful. I appreciate the time management took to explain the history of the restaurant and the new options. Great teamwork and it looks like the staff genuinely enjoy their work. I appreciate the time and effort of the entire staff! - Drinks. Yummers! I appreciate the different drink options- the mixed drinks, red wine, and the champagne. Each drink had their own flavor and was distinctive. Very well paired with the dishes. The mint lemonade had a nice lemon flavor and I could smell the lavender in the glass. The espresso martini didn't have too strong of a coffee flavor, which was nice. Excellent touch of the chocolate sprinkles along with the sugar on the glass. It gave it an extra shot of sweetness. - Opportunity to try new menu items. I've been to Bonefish Grill in other locations. I don't have the menu memorized, but I assumed all the dishes we tried were already on the menu. I totally appreciate the fact that we were given the opportunity to try new menu items before they're available to the public. Good choices, on behalf of the restaurant, and I'm happy to see Bonefish Grill expanding their menu. - Gift cards. Definitely appreciate the additional incentive of the $25 gift card! It was very nice that each guest received one, rather than just the Yelp Elites. I know my friend appreciated it and he'll definitely be using this. Thank you very much! I definitely plan on using this, as well. Final Answer Thank you for a wonderful night! Definitely plan on using the gift card and returning. I rarely give 5 star reviews, but I was genuinely impressed and everyone did such a wonderful job!

Incredible event! The staff was so friendly and welcoming upon arrival- they really set the stage for the rest of the event. Each item we tried was packed-full of flavor and I would've eaten as it's own meal! The run down: Lavender Lemonade Cocktail - light and nice balance of flavors Bang Bang Shrimp - SO good!! Favorite item of the night Wagyu Beef Sliders - tasty and easy to eat Crispy Calamari - crispy and not too tough/chewy Cioppino - really enjoyed the mix of seafood particularly the lobster Wine pairing - a nice red Fresh Espresso Martini - first time trying this drink! I could see how it would be a nice pick me up if you're getting tired. I enjoyed the education on it Macadamia Nut Brownie - Wow! Rich, delicate, sweet, goodness. Would definitely get again

Almost too beautiful to eat!

This was GREAT! My wife isn't a huge fish fan, so the name Bonefish Grill would typically scare her off from trying it. However, the burger sliders, drinks, and dessert is more than enough to convince her otherwise! The staff was very enthusiastic and friendly. The food was incredible, especially the shrimp. I am curious to try their happy hour. For the area it's a decent price and their food is definitely a notch above what I'd anticipate from most chains. Very well done all at Bonefish Grill!

This event was so much more than I was expecting. The food was delicious and everything I've come to expect from years of dining here, but what stood out to me the most was the top notch service from the manager and his staff. They went above and beyond and were truly the stars of the night. They put on an absolutely incredible event from start to finish. As we walked in the door, we were warmly greeted and got to watch the talented staff make the best cocktail I've ever had-their lavender lemonade cocktail. It was just as delicious as it was beautiful. Freshly squeezed lemons with a splash of tea, st germain and lavender infused vodka garnished with a sprig of lavender. Wow-I immediately went home and tried to recreate. Then we were seated at a long rectangular table to mingle with other guests in a spacious private room. The food on the menu was all displayed on a table in the front, which was really impressive. For apps, we received their famous bang bang shrimp-easily my favorite app at any restaurant and although many restaurants have tried to copy this recipe, Bonefish's remains the best-wagyu beef sliders and crispy calamari. Then we all received a glass of champagne for a toast thanking us for being a part of this amazing event (over the top service was the theme of the night) and fresh bread with a housemade pesto dipping oil, which was fab. For the main dish, we had fresh cioppino paired with a Malbec. This was my favorite part, and I'm so excited to order this new dish on their menu. Scallops, lobster, calamari and mussels in a savory tomato sauce with some sweetness and spice. Yummm. Then to top it all off, we had a flourless brownie with raspberry sauce topped with macadamia nuts and a side of vanilla ice cream. I never thought a flourless brownie could taste that good! Wow! It was served with an espresso martini, which was rich and smooth. Even this non-coffee drinker was a fan! As if ALL of this wasn't enough, we all received a handwritten thank you note with a gift card to come back on the house. It was such a wonderful event that I've been raving about to all of my friends and family.

What an amazing experience! This was my first time attending an elite event and I must say, Bonefish did not disappoint! I've never thought about going to Bonefish Grill, but this experience has changed my mind. I wanted to give a special thanks to John, Marcus, Scott, Kate, and Chris for making this a great night. When we first arrived, we were pleasantly greeted with a smile by John, who was very helpful to find seats for my husband and I. As soon as we were seated, we were served a Lavender mint lemonade cocktail. John did an excellent job explaining what was put in the cocktail, which was ABSOLUTly delicious (pun intended)! It was not too tart, not too sweet and the flavors balanced everything perfectly, especially the mint and lavender. I would definitely order it again on our next visit. Then Kate and Marcus came around to serve our apps: Wagu sliders, Bang Bang Shrimp, and calamari. The sliders were served with a simple condiments, but were oh so delicious with soft fresh bread. The calamari was seasoned very well, but when its dipped in the sauce, it balanced the salt with other flavors, with a tad of sweetness. Last but not least, my favorite, the Bang Bang Shrimp. I absolutely love this dish. The shrimp still had a nice solidity to it, even though covered in delicious sauce. Now, drumroll please....the main entree, Cioppino! I honestly would have never ordered this on my own. I like seafood, but I have only tried the popular dishes. This was my first "mussel experience " and I loved it. The sauce had a peppered taste in a red sauce, that flavored so well. This dish was full of meat! The lobster tail was my favorite! The wine served with the dish paired perfectly. Then desert, the Brownie was moist, warm and fudgy, but tasted best when eaten with the icecream and raspberry sauce simultaneously. It was like an sweet explosion in my mouth. The espresso drink offered a quick "pick me up". Chris had done a great job explaining every dish, every course and the history and future of the company. The staff represented Bonefish Grill well, and I am thankful to have attended this event! My compliments to the Chef!! Overall the set up was very elegant, the staff was pleasant and the experience was top notch. We were overwhelmed with gratitude and this night left a great impression.

Wow, what a great Yelp Elite event at Bonefish Grill in McCandless. We were graciously welcomed by several staff members upon arrival & they even offered to bring us their featured lavender lemonade cocktail to the table if we didn't want to wait...but we waited & got the low down from the bartenders on how it was prepared. And it was a full sized cocktail, not a sample. Then they offered a champagne toast! Nice. The appetizers of bang bang shrimp (my fave), calamari (great sauce) & wagyu sliders (my husband's fave) were all quite yummy. Cioppino was the main course with shrimp, mussels, scallops, squid & lobster tail, spicy & delicious and paired with an 2018 Argentinian Malbec, we enjoyed very much. We were surprised to get a full sized dessert as well, a macadamia nut brownie that was actually gluten free, but didn't taste gluten free. It was served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream & a generous dollop of whipped cream. The dessert drink pairing was an expresso martini. We got to hear from the head chef on food prep & all the staff were so friendly & accommodating. Well done Bonefish!

Loved this event! The Bonefish Grill staff was so welcoming and accommodating to our group; truly making it a wonderful evening. Each of the food samples were delicious. I couldn't get enough of the Bang Bang Shrimp! The spicy, yet still sweet sauce on the crispy battering made me a bigger fan of shrimp than I have ever been. My second favorite sampling were the wagyu beef sliders. The meat was extremely tender and juicy, and the chipotle mayo on top added a great seasoning to the overall flavor. The raspberry brownie sundae to end the night was incredible. The brownie was still warm, fresh out of the oven, the raspberry drizzle wasn't overwhelming and complemented the chocolate fudge and vanilla ice cream perfectly. Each of the beverages they paired with these meals were tasty as well. I would definitely order the lemonade again. The atmosphere was classy, yet comfortable. The staff was professional and caring. And the food and drinks were delicious. Overall an amazing event!

Not sure where to start. Scott, the bartender warmly put us at ease while seats together were found for Mike and me @bonefishgrillmccandless yelp elite event. The team was top notch and welcoming. Lavender infused lemonade will be our go-to cocktail in the future. Bang bang shrimp and waghu sliders were slammin'. Did not try the calamari, because there was so much from which to choose. Entree was an outstanding cioppino with plenty of mussels, scallops and a lobster tail in a stellar flavorful sauce paired with a lovely malbec. Stood on it's own, maybe better than the San Fran version. As if that wasn't enough, the final course was a decadent flourless macadamia fudge brownie with an espresso martini. We were overwhelmed with the quality and presentation. Each course was deluvered with such care, and we felt so privileged to be part of the evening. The staff took such pride in their work and clearly love their positions. Although we live in Irwin, we will soon be back. Thanks so much!

But what really got me jazzed was the next morning as I was commuting to work, I heard Randy Baumann, host of the DVE Morning Show on WDVE, talk about attending a fund raiser the previous night at Scratch. He went on and on about how great everything tasted and how the owners locally sourced their ingredients and did wonderful things for the community. Then he dropped a bomb, more like a cricket and mealworm bomb. He explained that they use crickets and mealworms as a protein supplement and they are organic and he raved they tasted great. To most people, including myself I don't have an interest in eating bugs. However, I thought, if picked to participate in this event, as they say when in Rome, I would eat some bugs. To my pleasant surprise all samples offered that evening were bug free! Speaking of samples, they were all delicious. All but the third sample was vegetarian. I noticed, as the owner pointed out when he delivered his speech, that they offer a lot of vegetarian options. We has a fried risotto ball, a mushroom goat cheese crostini, a cracker with pulled pork, and a shortbread cookie at the end for dessert. We were also given two cocktails that were invented specifically for this occasion. I liked the first one best, finding the latter to be a little on the sweet side. I had a great time seeing some Yelp friends and I was so happy to hear Don, the owner, explain the concept behind his establishment and how passionate they are about the community. Best part about Elite Events in my opinion. We also heard from the chef, and bartender. Really fantastic event, I look forward to going back. Thanks Scratch, Rachel C, and Yelp, awesome event!

The inside of the shop here doesn't consist of much, just a display case full of pepperoni rolls and a place to order. Then they have a kitchen and oven where they were making more rolls. All of the rolls that we had ordered tasted good and had a nice ratio of roll to fillings. Out of the 3 I tried both the hot trot and the Mon were my favorite, while my wife enjoyed the wagon wheelie especially the addition of the pickles. For my two I have to admit that I liked the hot trot the best due to the addition of the hot peppers. However, if you are an olive lover, I would highly recommend the Mon as you really get a nice olive flavor from it. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. First impressions were the space was small and intimate, with a lovely outdoor seating area and a modern looking downstairs where we yelpers gathered to enjoy the evening. Since that area was a tad small we were pretty packed in there, sardine like. Wait times for drinks was a tad on the excessive side since only one bartender was serving the masses. She was very nice though and well deserving of the tip we gave. The complimentary drinks were not my favorite though and I wouldn't order them again. The one drink I did purchase wasn't bad but more on the meh side. Strong though so that's a plus. My favorite food samples were the wild Columbian river salmon Nigiri, the edamame hummus, and the fried tofu. The Salmon topped this list as it was fresh and satisfying. I could have just eaten a plate of that and I would have been good. The hummus was very tasty, but they dished a big spoon of hummus and only supplied a few plantains chips. So there was a lot of wasted hummus. The bit of fried tofu was a nice sweet way of ending the samples. Since I am not into fried or sweet things this small portion worked. I have to agree with others that with the space constraint and the way everything was managed it was a bit clumsy. The samples, like the drinks came slowly, but I am not one to kick a gift horse in the mouth. I enjoyed most of the food, and may make a return trip probably for brunch. I learned this from viewing their website when I arrived home from the night. However, I would have preferred to hear it during the event, since it is always nice to hear about a business and what they have to offer, in order to encourage me to want to come back. The food industry is quite competitive, so it always helps to make yourself stand-out. Yelp events are a great way to meet-up with fellow yelpers and try new places. This event succeeded in this regard. I had a great time, the staff worked very hard to keep us going. Unfortunately, interaction between the staff and their yelper guests were at a bare minimum. I was starting to wonder if we were really welcomed in their restaurant, or were they just making the best of it. PAN looks like it has a lot to offer, and I am glad I had the opportunity to be part of the night. I have attended a handful of yelp events, and they were superior in every way, so I have to admit that this event cannot compare to these past experiences. Confusion and the lack of communication interferes with the flow of an event this size. Many thanks to the organizers and staff for a night out with fellow yelpers, and for providing some very tasteful dishes. The fried tofu and edamame hummus were my two favorites.

A tiny bit of pink and really juicy! Delish! Next, I tried their crab cake on a bun. Considering I am not the biggest fan of seafood and this was literally my first time trying a crab cake, I had nothing to compare it to. I liked it- but couldn't finish it because I thought it tasted a little fishy. The shrimp and grits was awesome! I recently visited the Outer Banks and saw shrimp and grits at basically every restaurant- but did not order it. I was excited to see they serve it at Benjamins! It was delicious- the shrimp was prepared right and wasn't fishy at all. The grits were really tasty too. Antny's ice cream.... omg the ice cream! Thick, cream cheese consistency almost, real apple pieces... apple pie in ice cream form. WOW. I was obsessed. I need to visit Antny's ASAP before they close for the season! It was awesome! Drinks! The Avery Brewery IPA was hoppy but also had a malty undertone that I wasn't a huge fan of. I enjoyed it though, I love trying new beers! The sangria was awesome! I agree with Kimberly B. in saying that a buffet style would have been awesome and a little easier, rather than the wait staff having to hand deliver each item while they were busy in the restaurant- which is why I took off one star. There was plenty of food for everyone though and the food was delivered hot and fresh- which is definitely better than the potential of cold food in a buffet. It was an AWESOME event! The restaurant staff was awesome and very professional as well! Can't wait to go back! P.S The chapstick is awesome! I love the passion fruit flavor!

Scoping Benjamin's I was assured we would be able to mingle, eat, and enjoy what I was hoping to be a Pirate victory all in the same night... Two out of three ain't bad right Meatloaf? Yes I would have much preferred the trifecta for the night but sadly it ended with a loss, at least at the stadium nearby... Moving on. This was our first visit to Benjamin's. The streets were packed with fans attending said game so parking was more challenging than I am certain almost any other night of the year. However we, as other pointed out, just had to circle the streets of the North Side a few times to find a spot. We arrived early and sat at the bar to enjoy some drinks and comradery with local Pirate fans. When it was time to start we made our way up the steps to the semi-private area where the other yelpers flocked to. We grabbed a couple drinks and made our way toward a back area since the area where the couches were located were occupied. We met up with Tim W. a well-known Elitist and had the opportunity to actually meet and chat. One of my favorite things about the events are meeting all the great yelpers in the community and enjoying the events with them. We also got to see Aj S and share several laughs as he is always a blast to be around. I think the major thing that the event lacked was the restraint of the vulture yelpers that hovered near the pool table and cleared out the sample trays before they made their way about the room. I have read the suggestions of other yelpers that a buffet may have helped this dilemma. I honestly don't think so. Free buffets bring out the worst in some people.. We were given tickets for drinks, so why not for food? Ah ha! Now we are talking... Anyhow that was the main drawback, since many trays were devoured right at their beginning destination we did miss some of the initial samplings. However, what eventually made its way around ended up being pretty darn scrumptious. The first thing that came our way was a smoked salmon with, capers and aioli, on a crostini. It was very good reminiscent of a lox and bagel. The next tray that came about was Shrimp and Grits served on a spoon for one bit sample. The corn grits had a habanero cheese in them and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. Such a balance of heat and flavor this was one of my favorite things, the perfect bite! I will order it when I visit again. A Veggie Slider tray made with Balsamic-Rosemary Goat Cheese & Granny Smith Apple chickpeas, and veggies made its way to us next. It was ok, had some good flavor, just wouldn't see me ever ordering it, but great option for those who are not carnivorous. Unlike the others at my table I did get to sample one of the pulled pork sliders with slaw, very good. We also got a crab cake slider, which was not my favorite, however I heard others signing praises so again just a personal palate opinion. I think like many others our favorite and winner of the evenings offerings was the candied jalapeno slider with candied jalapeno cream cheese & apple wood smoked bacon, taste buds were in awe. So, so very good. Definitely will pair well with the grits upon return visit. Lastly we got a bowl of Anthony's ice cream with three flavors, apple pie, ginger and one of pumpkin. I tasted each but opted to give them to Matt as he has a sweet tooth that won't stop and honestly I was feeling full only after single samples, so I can only image how the folks that attacked the waiters were feeling. We had a really nice time here, up to that Pirate loss when we packed up our ball and went home. Thanks Rachel for organizing the event and Benjamin's for all your tasty treats, see you at the next event

I have been putting this review off for a while because I was uncertain how to put pen to paper,…read morebut I can't procrastinate any longer. I am going to treat this review much like a work related evaluation and utilize the "compliment sandwich". So here it goes. A great shout out to Rachel C, our CM for organizing the event and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for supplying our tickets to the show. It was great finally being able to meet Rachel and the generosity of the PCT was phenomenal. I will never turn down an opportunity to view any event at the beautiful historic Benedum Center. Again many thanks! Now as far as the "musical" goes I will point out as others have, this was originally written as an opera. I am not a fan of operatic singing and though I liked several of the songs the switching back and forth from operatic signing to more main stream musical was not pleasing to my ears. I barely could understand the words when they were belted out in this format. The storyline was ok, however it had several racist undertones depicting African American's during this time period as fighting, gambling, drinking, drug abusing criminals. The story was also at times hard to follow, possibly because of the manner of the singing which left me disinterested at some times. I have seen several musicals at the Benedum and this was the most disappointing. Furthermore, for the last piece of bread on my sandwich, I really think the actors did a great job. I may not be a huge fan of this work, but I think the cast was top notch, and acting and dancing were entertaining. And as always any event at the Benedum is worth going to as 9 times out of 10 the experience is splendid.

I was very excited to have the opportunity to attend this show! I've seen tons of musicals, but…read morePorgy and Bess was not one of them. I was familiar with many of the songs (for example, Summer Time, It Ain't Necessarily So) but was not that familiar with the plot. I did know it was more operatic then most Broadway shows that are shown at the Benedum, but it is always excited to experience something new. After grabbing my sippy cup of wine, we took our seats. The seats were great! We were left of center towards the back of the Orchestra. This further confirms to me that there really aren't many bad seats at the Benedum. For some reason, there was a delay in starting the show. I usher at the Benedum, so I know it had something to do with the production company and not the theater. Knowing the show was about two and a half hours long, I was itching for it to start on time. However, once the 25 piece orchestra played the opening chords of the overture, I knew we would be in for a treat. Most modern musicals have ditched the overture and entr'acte, so it was enjoyable to hear both as a part of this production. Once the curtain rose, we were greeted with a minimalist set and a slightly inclined stage. It made me think of how many opera houses "back in the day" had an inclined stage because they did not have inclined seating. Although the set was minimal, it was impactful. This was achieved through creative staging and choreography. Even the fights (which can end up being quite cheesy in stage shows) were done tastefully and made as believable as possible. The numbers in this show drew you in either through catchy tunes or for the emotional attachment. I found myself wanting to dance along with the picnickers in "Oh, I Can't Sit Down" and feeling the raw emotion of the characters in "My Man's Gone Now" and "I Loves You Porgy." Some of my favorites were "It Ain't Necessarily So" "Leaving for the Promised Land" and "Oh Doctor Jesus." However, they were all enjoyable and well executed. Sometimes when things are done in an operatic style it can be difficult to understand a performer, especially when using a specific dialect. That was not the case in this production. Everything was sung and spoken clearly which made it easier for the audience to follow along with the plot. The show had a great mix of solos and ensemble numbers, humor and sadness and it flowed very well from one song to the other. Overall, a very enjoyable experience and a great night out! I highly recommend seeing this show during its run in Pittsburgh.
