Had a really great experience here. Was a tow truck driver in the Marine corps, but took a 5 year break from trucking. Recently decided to pursue my CDL. Elite was super helpful getting me setup using my GI bill, Tyler specifically. All the instructors were great, but Kevin and Chris from pre trip definitely stole the show. Super entertaining guys! Made a great learning environment. Was unsure about pursuing manual and Kevin convinced me to go through with it and helped me become proficient in less than a week. Full 5 stars from me. I just went through their CLD training and got my CDL. It sure was intense and I had to put in a serious effort studying in the evenings etc. The instructors are very professional and I feel I had the best training possible. I payed myself out of pocket, so I was a big investment for me. But it payed off. Already before finishing the training, I had a good job on hand for driving locally in Oregon. The school really cares about you. I failed my external test the first time on 90 degree backing. They let me have an extra hour in the truck before my second test and I passed without any problems. No discussion about extra payment - I appreaciate that. I feel I got the best possible value for my money and I can 100% stand in for what they are doing. The first thing I am going to tell you if and when you go to Elite truck school is to Learn to drive the Manual Transmission. Don't listen to the instructors, because they will try to convince you that you only need to learn to an automatic transmission. They will tell you things like no companies have Manual transmissions in there trucks, and if they do have manual transmissions their trucks are old and they are junk. They are wrong. every company I worked at has Automatic and Manual Transmission truck. if your company puts you in an automatic transmission truck and your truck breaks down and the only truck that is available is a truck with a manual transmission. if you can't drive the manual transmission truck you can't work until your truck is fixe. That means you don't get paid until your truck is fixed. I will give you one example Columbia Distributing. They have manual and automatic transmission trucks. The smaller loads go out with a smaller trailer and our pulled by trucks with Automatic Transmissions. The bigger loads are in bigger trailers which are pulled by trucks with manual transmission and they are not junk. Everything the instructors tell you in your first two weeks is false when it comes to working in the real world. It is easier for truck driving schools to train people on Automatic Transmission am telling you learn to drive a manual transmission truck. if you learn to drive a manual transmission you can a manual transmission and a automatic transmission. if you learn to drive a automatic transmission you can only drive a automatic transmission. if you can drive both a manual transmission and an automatic transmission it makes you more valuable and you can work anywhere. Believe me when I tell you there are more companies out there that have trucks with manual transmissions in their trucks then the schools let you believe. Its a straight out lie when they tell you know companies anymore have trucks with manual transmission's in them, and if they do there trucks are junk and they are old. That is a lie. Listen to me, and don't learn the hard way like I did. it will save you time and money if you learn to drive the manual transmission in semi trucks you can drive a manual transmission and a Automatic transmission. Just do what you have to while at school but do not listen to the instructors about working in the real world as truck drivers, they don't know what they are talking about and are pulling a con on you by telling you that you don't need to learn to drive the manual transmission in semi trucks. The family that runs the school is great.Amazing people to work with while going to truck driving school. I have a problem with some of the information that the instructors try to tell the new students, because they are new and don't know anything about the trucking world. If you only learn on the automatic transmission and you want to go back to school to learn to drive the manual transmission you will have to start all over again and do everything over. Once you get out and start driving it gets bette, the road instructors are amazing instructors. chris he teaches the pre trip class he is really good. Just watch out and be aware that the information some of the instructors tell you about working in the real world is not true. That is my warning to you, so you don't have to learn the hard way like I did and have to spend more time and money to learn to drive the manual transmission while you are there. Dear Greg, Suzanne, Thad, Mike, Phil, Paul, and Brian, As you know, I was a high-school English teacher who could not find work for a few years but had small children to support. It was not my dream to drive a truck. When my wife suggested it, I felt pretty low. But you assured me you could help me to learn and support my family, which was my goal. The first week we read the entire Oregon State Commercial Driver manual, with Lead Instructor Mike sprinkling the reading with relevant anecdotes to illustrate the information in the manual. The very first day my respect for truck drivers increased dramatically. Mike said his goal was not just to help us get CDLs but "to know how to drive a truck". A CDL is meaningless if you don't know what you're doing. And ETS goes the extra mile to provide PROFESSIONAL training, not just churn out truck drivers. They teach you how to operate the machinery, but they also instill professional values that you will carry with you the rest of your career, and it's about much more than following the speed limit. The second Monday, flush with knowledge, we went to the DMV and took the General Knowledge written test to obtain our CDL permits, along with any other endorsement tests we wished to get a jump on. From that day on we were outside: learning the parts of the truck and what to say during our pre-trip inspection, practicing driving, and learning how to back up a combination commercial vehicle, which is no easy task. The first few days driving, however, Mike said he didn't want us to worry about anything but learning how to clutch and shift. I had had no idea before this class that big trucks had 10 (and sometimes 13) gears. I was afraid just to get into a truck, let alone drive one! My first day driving, Tuesday of the second week, I was stressed out. I came home with a headache and took an hour nap. I don't even remember the drive. What I remember is the next day it got easier. Each day got better than the last, with some bumps, until I was able to add new knowledge and skills to my repertoire. Mike, Phil, Paul and Brian created a safe, encouraging, and fun learning environment. I didn't know trucks, but I knew teaching, and I appreciated that very much. Phil, the other main instructor, offered a wealth of experiences for any situation imaginable and even some that weren't. Paul, the backing instructor, knows the science and physics of backing a truck up as well as anyone on Earth--and it is NOT easy. The third week brought more practice, more skills, and more written DMV tests, just to be ready to go with the endorsements we wanted and needed. We all had our final DMV pre-trip, backing, and drive tests at the end of the fourth week, conducted by a DMV-certified examiner who came to the school to run us through our paces. On my test, I passed the pre-trip, which you can bank and not do again if you fail something else. That ended up helping me. I started my backing test and was doing better than ever when I got cocky, made a mistake, got upset, and spiraled down from there. I failed my backing test the first time, which does happen. This was not due to the School but to my own overconfidence and inability to respond well when I encountered a small challenge. Though they had told us repeatedly to stay calm and not let mistakes get us flustered, I was still learning how to respond to the pressure of operating one of these giant behemoths. I can't deny that, as a former high school teacher, I had the farthest to go to get used to it all. Only two guys out of our class of twelve failed our tests the first time, and that was because we were both stress cases. Everyone learns differently at different rates, and I appreciate that ETS understands this. They tailor their instruction so everyone gets what he or she needs to succeed. Other schools in the Portland area charge more for extra attention, and I just don't think that's a good way to treat students who are already paying a good amount for professional training. ETS let both my classmate and me come back in the following week free of charge to practice and learn some more, though the class had ended, and arranged another test for us. Then I felt both humbled and better prepared to deal with the challenge. A week and a half after our first DMV test, my classmate and I were tested again and passed. Sometimes, even when we know what to do, we just need to relax and not freak out. Now that I have my CDL, I am considering my career options. I am also a better driver in my regular vehicle. I notice what truck drivers are doing right and wrong on the road. Most importantly, I have a new set of skills that will let me support my family. Thanks, ETS. If you want your CDL this is the school to go to hands down. All the instructors are top notch and extremely knowledgeable. They all are there to help you succeed and want you to succeed. I had the pleasure to have Conrad as my driving instructor, by far a very passionate instructor. Which I appreciate all the knowledge he gave to me, especially when it came to backing he was able to make it to where I was able to feel extremely confident and comfortable. I truly couldn't have asked for a better instructor. When it came down to learning the pre-trip and air breaks test Chris was my instructor and he was an amazing instructor and passionate about his class. I was struggling with remembering the verbiage and he had a lot of tricks to be able to remember what to say and when to say certain words. Which helped out and made it to where it all became second nature. And I can't forget Jason who was amazing when it came to getting my permit, I was very nervous when it came time to take the test. If you agree looking for a great place to learn the CDL pretrip and everything along with the DMV walk around test this is the place to do it! Ice talked with other guys that have gone else where in the Portland area and they also ended up here! These instructors are very thorough, they will tell you what you need to do and how to get there! If at first you don't succeed try again! Paul, Scott, and Shane are very understanding and can speak from experience because yes they were truck drivers before and know every inch of the roads and laws. They will work with anyone! No matter what your race, creed,, color, or background! This school was fantastic all the way from start to finish. The cost was reasonable, the office staff was super friendly and always a pleasure to work with and always happy to answer your questions. Four weeks flew by but these guys busted their butts to make sure we learned as much as we possibly could not just to pass the dmv tests but to be successful in the crazy world of being a truck driver and not just be a truck driver but a professional. Mike, Phil, and Paul have the patience of saints and it's amazing they don't drink like fish with what they put up with teaching all of us students. I don't think anyone could ask for a better group of instructors, these guys actually care that you succeed and never once yelled at any of us, on top of it all they did it with a sense of humor.
