Greg doesn't just help with passing driver's tests, his tips and methods really focus on making you a great driver overall. He focuses strongly on being safe and provides tips and context for why we need to build certain driving habits. A holistic approach I really appreciated. Last summer, I signed up two of my sons for an 8 lesson package with Hammerly's Great NW Drivers. One son (15) was eager to get going with driving, while the other one (21) has had some confidence problems behind the wheel--as well as being busy at college and unable to practice. They both LOVED Greg, and consequently all my time driving with them has involved them telling me "Greg says this..." and "right now, you'd be failing your test, Dad..." My point is that Greg is extremely knowledgeable and knows how to connect with people of all ages. This March, I emailed and got my 15-year-old on the schedule for a brush-up lesson, as he was determined to take the test on his birthday. Greg drove the test route near the Powell DMV with him (gulp!) and gave him pointers. Because of Samantha's tip about scheduling the drive test months out, we were able to get a test appointment with ODEC in Beaverton, and the birthday boy aced it on his birthday. Lorna is a gem of an instructor! I am 39 years old and hadn't driven since I was 16 due to fear resulting from an accident. I am also on the spectrum (Asperger's), so driving was difficult for other reasons. Lorna helped me put aside my fears, was able to instruct me in the logical way I needed her to, and is also a very pleasant person in general. She is also extremely knowledgeable, reliable and easy to communicate with. I have difficulty with spacial relations, metaphors, and anything abstract. Lorna just tells it like it is. I am still working with her to fine tune my skills, but my confidence is so much higher, and I feel safe on the road at this point. Her lessons are worth every penny. I especially recommend Lorna if you're an adult learner, or someone with a particular setback (anxiety, etc.) She is very patient, and will get you out there safely and with confidence. I finally am getting around to write a review for Greg and Lorna (His mother). Greg has helped me get over the biggest embarrassment of my life- not knowing how to drive at 33! Greg has a very pleasant personality. He is patient, thorough at explaining and good sense of humor- all the attributes an educator must have to encourage and inspire (I wish my high school chemistry teacher was more like him, would have done better in class!). All the sessions were well planned and ended with a review. I did one session with Lorna (Greg's mom). Different teaching style but equally good! I always remember Greg's "Targeting" and Lorna's "Bike eyes!!!" when I am driving. Passed my driving test in first attempt. Quite freeing to not depend on anyone to drive me around. I owe my new found freedom to Greg! I would highly recommend them to anyone without a doubt. read more

As a 25 year old without a driver's license, I was extremely anxious to get started. Greg helped me overcome my nerves around driving. I did the 5 lesson package which was perfect for me. I have mountains of appreciation and regard for my instructor Lorna Pearson Lane, and, by extension, Hammerly's Great NW Drivers. This fall, Lorna did a wonderful job of dissolving much of my driving-related anxiety, and cultivating my confidence and even genuine joy for being behind the wheel. For most of my 26 years, I have lived with an intense anxiety of cars and driving--as a driver, passenger, and pedestrian, especially when faced obtaining my license. Driving has been a serious phobia, and one that has had a significant impact on my life. It is not an easy fear to explain to others, and can be a huge source of shame, especially for someone who prefers to be independent and unlimited by fear. I took Driver's Ed as a college student a few years ago (with a class of high schoolers, no small feat) and learned how to drive, and even felt pretty happy behind the wheel at times. Passing Driver's Ed was a huge accomplishment. My anxiety remained though, and I did not drive again for four years. I did a lot of work during that period though trying to cultivate more positive self-talk around the subject. After summoning more courage, I signed up for four drives with Hammerly's Great NW Drivers. Lorna contacted me and was helpful from the beginning. She told me to hold off writing a check until the end of my first drive, when we would have a better idea of how many drives I would need. After my second drive, she had me schedule a drive test (!) with the DMV, as the DMV tends to be booked out eight weeks. We then scheduled my remaining two drives around my upcoming drive test. She was calm, matter-of-fact, and fun as an instructor, offering clear direction and encouragement. On days when I was a bit more anxious before our drives, I would remind myself of how enjoyable it is to drive while chatting with Lorna. I took my drive test last week and passed. Even if I had not passed the first time, however, I would have passed soon; I am a much calmer driver and pedestrian now. If you live in the Portland metro area, I highly recommend Hammerly's Great NW Drivers, especially for folks with driving related anxiety. If you have different physical needs, please know that their vehicles are more accessible and adaptive than most, and reach out with your questions. Lorna now lives on the coast, and might no longer be with Hammerly's (I'm not certain!), but if you're on the coast too, please consider her. I'm so thankful for her instruction. read more

I had to get a new driver's license when I returned to the US after living abroad, and I was out of practice. I was scared to be driving again after a long break, but Greg really put me at ease and held my hand through the entire process--up to and including the driving test. Just passed my driving test in the first attempt. thanks to Greg. Amazing instructor. His classes not only cover the drive test but all possible driving scenarios like country roads, downtown one way roads etc. He uses mordern technology to teach e.g. using an extended camera to take videos of turns or to show you how far you are from parked cars, white line etc. He provides driver ed sheets prior every class. Just got my license today and passed the driving test first time! I'm so thankful for Lorna. Being a new driver in a foreign country in my thirties, I had a lot of anxiety before I started. After I did five package lessons with Lorna, I feel much more confident. Scheduling with Samantha is super easy. She got the five lessons booked from the very beginning. So no surprise or frustration like some of my other friends had encountered with other driving schools when they couldn't get following appointments after one or two lessons. The package covered various driving situations, such as busy downtown streets, residential areas, countryside and freeway. After each class, Lorna is very helpful pointing out the mistakes and the areas I need to work on. And she is always very calm and patient to work with. I just passed my drive test in the first attempt thanks to the amazing instructor, Greg ! I took a 5 lesson package and kept practising in between the sessions in my own vehicle using all the techniques Greg taught me. Every lesson was well planned and Greg took me learning driving to all kind of scenarios like countryside, residential areas, freeways and downtown portland. He knows his work well and you can expect nothing but a great driving teacher with all the necessary skills like patience, getting adjusted as per the student's behavior out of him. He will take pictures, videos and show your driving and and if any correction to be made. I'm an experienced driver but didn't know how to drive a manual transmission. Greg taught me to drive a stick in no time. He is super patient. I was a disaster at our first lesson and killed the engine nearly a bazillion times. He didn't ask me to do anything I wasn't comfortable with and was very aware and understanding of anxieties I might have. Great experience, learned to drive stick in two sessions. read more
