While I may not have had the privilege of attending the 2-year Meisner program at EMAS Studio, I did have the opportunity to audition for their Advanced Scene Study Class. I will champion this studio to the end of time! CULTURE Obviously, I was the new kid on the block, and I will never forget the moment I walked in the doors and was immediately met with friendly faces, all offering their hands in introduction. From the first moment of class to the end, everyone was here to learn, giving their absolute all, and I truly forged friendships, which are really meaningful, as acting can be a lonely career path. It's evident that the staff choose their participants wisely because everyone is a reflection of this amazing studio. This class was broken into three sections: Drama from film, directed by Elizabeth herself; Theatre, directed by Jordana; and Comedy from TV, by Ken. TEACHERS In my opinion, Elizabeth teaches the heart and soul of the craft, provoking a deeper understanding of your character with questions that you should continue to ask yourself in all your performances. She grounds you in your emotion and ensures you exude authenticity. I took the Beginner's Technique class with Chase & Terri, and it was revolutionary for me. I've taken other acting classes from various locations that gave me a script, had me perform it, and then gave me a critique. With that method, I was getting more experience performing but I didn't feel like I was learning how to do things beyond my natural capabilities. But with EMAS, I was given an introduction to different acting styles and most importantly the Meisner technique, and I already could tell that I was becoming a better listener and more present in the scene. Honestly, I had pretty high hopes and the class I took was not that great. The instructor was constantly annoyed at us and grumpy, and the atmosphere was weirdly tense & competitive. I've never experienced that much hostility or passive-aggression in an acting class before. Maybe it's an LA thing. I actually felt a little unsafe, to be honest. Wish I'd started my acting journey here from the beginning: Before starting at this studio, I'd had many experiences on set and had learned at many audition and scene study classes in LA. But I knew there was something missing in my technique. And even though my script analysis was strong, I didn't have a great foundation that made my performances authentic enough. And so I embarked on the journey of a 2-year Meisner program at EMAS. The hardest part of this program was swallowing my pride and starting from the beginning again. If I was already successful at booking film in LA, why did I have to start from scratch? And the first year was REALLY basic. And boring. But wow, the second year was magnificent. Add to that, whenever I saw my classmates perform, I was in awe at how quickly they became adept at channeling true emotions. Their performances drew me in unlike any other class I'd ever been in. Their emotions were so genuine and their action so authentic, it was difficult to spot any lies in their acting. And as for my own journey, I learned so much about myself. My imagination grew leaps and bounds. I could take text and manipulate it into any situation. My emotions were free. I could craft characters that were distinctly different from me. I have been training for years, and I also wanted to study a Meisner technique. This is so far, the best school I have ever attended and I'm only in the first month. In the past, I was able to bullshit my way and perform. However, this program sees my way and is cutting that away from me. had an amazing time taking an acting class here. I did the intro class all about creating a character. It was a great primer if you have never acted before. The class starts by focusing on movement and the physical aspect of acting before moving more into studying scenes and working on monologues. Every part of the class was great, and things i wasn't sure would be worth it ended up paying out by the completion of the course. When the final class was finished, I felt accomplished. I was proud of the work I had done over 10 weeks. DO NOT MISS ANY CLASSES. I missed one class that focused on voicework and wish that i didn't. There's always interesting stuff that each class focuses on, I really want to dig deeper now I got a taste. Now that the class stuff is out of the way, I have a few words about the two people leading the class. Michael Yurchak and Chase Studinski were phenomenal. In the beginning, I was nervous about the prospect of having two teachers, two different perspectives, that there would be wires getting crossed. Both of them brought different things to the table, and have a wider range of experience that I am grateful to be exposed to. At the end of the day, when it comes to acting, no two people will do the same role the same way. Having two teachers to guide was great, because they both compliment each other and it allowed me to keep adjusting my performance. This adjustment made me realize that I am not acting to make them happy, I am acting to find the truth of my character. I completed the summer intensive and the 1st year conservatory at this studio, and it has changed my life! The conservatory consists of meisner technique classes, movement classes (Williamson technique), voice classes (fitzmaurice Technique), and Shakespeare study. In other words, you get the same exact education you would in any BFA or MFA program at a SUPER affordable rate. Every teacher here has gone from a teacher to a mentor, as they really invest if you give your 100 percent effort. Look, I've been acting for years. I did lots of community theatre and high school plays. I have a drama degree from a university with a solid drama department. We had amazing teachers, learned all kinds of methods, theatre history, design, etc. I loved the things that I learned while at college... Yet -- EMAS has offered me the most fufilling, most cohesive, structured and fully realized acting program I've ever had. I started with the Meisner summer intensive. I would HIGHLY recommend starting with this "taste of Meisner" if you've only read about the technique and are unsure about how all that repetition works. That way, you can also get a feel for the teachers and their methods and see how they vibe with you. I vibed with them well, so I decided to enroll in the 2-year Meisner technique program. Coming into the program, I was unsure about acting. I had been doing it for so long, it seemed like just going through the motions. EMAS completely changed my feelings about acting, film, and theatre. This is a group of passionate, dedicated people, who want to make you just as fully invested in your work as they are in you. I adore the teachers. And I know I'm not alone. Each one of them offers a unique perspective, nurturing you where you need to be nurtured, and coming down strict when you need a wake-up call. I have never witnessed or heard of any student being mistreated -- only told that they need to "get their act together" if they clearly did not do any work. This is not a place to slouch. You can't just roll into class not having done any work on what you were supposed to be working on. The teachers are highly perceptive, and they'll know. And they'll call you on it. (Not only that, but you and your fellow students, as you all grow more perceptive and empathetic, will find that you will *also* be able to spot bullshit from a mile away.) I just finished the two year program, and I know that this class not only made me a better actor -- I believe it helped me grow a lot as a person, as well. Many of my classmates echo this sentiment. Before I took this class, I wasn't using my voice; now, I can use my voice, and I come across with full confidence no matter what room I'm in. Before, I would always choose the "obvious" way to read a scene; now, I see whole new unique sets of choices. Before this class, I took people's behavior and words for granted. Now I can read subtext in human interactions like it's second nature. This has helped me not only as an actor, but also as a writer, a filmmaker.... it's helped me in relationships with my friends and family. Now I can read situations for what they really are, and really hear what people are saying. I do improv too, and EMAS has helped me become a better improviser!! Before taking the Meisner program, I would just be standing on the backline, in my head, thinking about how I could do a funny character or a line. I am late in writing a review, given that I graduated 2 years ago. Before writing, I read the other reviews to see if I could avoid covering ground that was already addressed. I read below a negative review that asked how many "working actors" this studio had produced. They mentioned one who is famous, (he's a series regular on a tv show). Well, I am one of the non-famous working actors they produced. I made my living as actor before the class, and still do today. Now I know, you're saying, "Wait, you were already working. You don't count!," but stay with me. In the two years since I graduated, I've seen my booking ratio NEARLY DOUBLE, and my callbacks increase significantly as well. I keep records of that information so I can tell you those figures are not estimates, they are facts. While I was a working actor before the class, I am an actor who works a lot more after graduating from it. Will it work for you? Depends. I recommend taking the intensive, as that will help you get a taste of what you are in for, so you can see if Meisner is a good fit for you. I get the feeling one reviewer was expecting it to be something it wasn't, sort of like taking an improv class and feeling gipped because they don't teach cold reading. The two year program is intense, about half of each class drops out. And it's a LOT of work. I just finished the Meisner 2-year program in this studio. The faculty is impeccable and a strong practitioner of tough love. They will cultivate, guide, inspire, and motivate you to give your very best every class and they will also call out your BS if it is evident in your work. The program is tough. Two classes a week and you are required to rehearse with your partner before each class. That is 4 days a week. But this structure teaches you discipline and ingrains in you a strong work ethic that will be useful in the real world. read more

EMAS is for serious actors who want to make a quantum leap in their performance skills. All classes require hard work because well, that's what it takes to be good at the craft of acting. A significant out of class rehearsal and development effort is needed if you're going to get the most out of the class. Like high performing athletes, and dancers the performance time is really just where you show everyone what you've been doing in practice, so lots of rehearsal time is required. That's just the reality of doing anything well. Between you and me, Elizabeth always knows when you haven't rehearsed- ALWAYS.
