    French onion soup
    Julia B.

Restaurant review: A steaming crock of french onion soup is a great way to take a break from the slopes at Elk Mountain! Winter Garden is the lodge's restaurant & the french onion soup is the best thing on their menu. Unfortunately, the rest of the dishes fall pretty flat (not necessarily anything wrong with them, just not great for the price). They do offer a decent beer selection, and service is actually pretty quick if you get there on the early side of when they open to avoid the main lunch rush crowd. The ambiance is your typical ski lodge - but some of the tables are right next to the slopes so you can watch people skiing while you eat. Overall, it's kind of your average ski lodge lunch spot - not the best food but a fine place to warm up & give your legs a break from the slopes. As far as the skiing goes, Elk is my favorite mountain in PA! The trails are a little longer than your typical Poconos trails, and they have a variety of difficulty levels. The crowds are also usually not very big, and lift lines stay pretty short. Food: C Drinks: B Service: B Ambiance: B+

    OTW to Elk Mountain

My husband and I had a blast skiing Elk Mountain early February 2021! We've been to a few other places around WV/PA, and this is my favorite so far. Drove up from VA and stayed in an Airbnb nearby. Drove into Elk Mountain each day and parking was super easy. Top lot has ski in/out access. When that lot filled up, the lower parking lot shuttle was quick to retrieve guests. Lift tickets were well-priced, and service was friendly. The lodge was nice and warm, but we didn't spend much time inside or grab any food there. Only came in to use the restroom and warm up for a minute. Those front stairs for the bathrooms/lockers are treacherous in ski boots. It snowed a little on two of three days we skied. A dry fluffy snow. The trails were thick with powder and well-groomed. Good signage, easy to navigate. Hardly anyone was out, so lots of space and no lift lines. Average lift time and not a ton of stops or hold ups. We will absolutely go back! Great time and good skiing!!

Trails are lined with Norway Spruces which makes it very pretty

We enjoyed our first visit to Elk! Great variety of trails and absolutely loved how they are lined with Norway Spruces. The food was average and pricey but that's to be expected.

I've been coming to Elk Mountain since I was 18 (so 30+ years). Loved it more in the winter when I was younger, but now enjoy the summer just as much. It's 3+ miles to walk up Lenape to Mahican and then down Lehigh to Delaware. Great hike. Clean and lots of fresh air. Took just over an hour. Nice work out. Close to 900 calories. Finch Hill Dairy Barn here I come.

On his own after an hour lesson.

Took my 10-year-old grandson for snowboard lessons. Troy was a fabulous, patient, knowledgeable instructor and my grandson finished the day with about 40 runs down the beginner slope on his own. He was exhausted, but so happy that he had learned.

Whether you really like Elk Mountain or not depends on what you want out of your ski experience. If you desire an upscale pampered après ski, with comfy lodge, good restaurants, and generally well appointed resort-like dalliance, then this is not for you. Elk Mountain's facilities are old, slow, and mostly uncomfortable. Parking is far from lifts, and the open bed trucks that transport you up to the mountain require you to stand and balance while carrying your gear and holding the rails for dear life. On the other hand, if skiing is what you want, and you don't care too much about the rest, this is the place for you. It has the best snow in Pennsylvania, the highest elevation and the longest runs. When you don't have the time to drive to Stowe or Killington, nor the dough to fly out to Breckenridge or Aspen, then Elk Mountain can be your Shangri-La. It's is a beautiful 3 hour drive from Philly, and a little longer from NYC. The Poconos are beautiful in winter, and the hamlets that dot the landscape offer a glimpse of country life oft forgotten and untasted. Elk Mountain offers the chance to slow down and speed up at the same time. There aren't many such places in our hectic lives.

Parking is ample, but you will need to ride the "Elk wagon" shuttle to the lodge, so it is easiest to wear gear and pack light.

But we have been so thrilled with our stay that I just had to leave a review for them, especially considering the absence of reviews on Yelp. This place is just absolutely wonderful! The scenic view is astounding, yes it may be extremely rural, but if you are looking for that, I wouldn't look anywhere else in the area. The resort is seated on top of the "Endless Mountains", which are indeed, seemingly endless. The units are wonderful, they are split level with 2 bedrooms downstairs, the master BR connects to a bathroom with a shower, which then connects to a beautiful room cedar wood room with a Jacuzzi and inside of that room is a sauna. The other bedroom has a bathroom with shower as well. Upstairs is a kitchen and living room with a fireplace and deck. The absolute best part about the resort is the staff. I have never in my life experienced such wonderful staff! Georgia and Mike run the front desk and are the nicest people you could ever ask to talk to. They are beyond helpful, filled with recommendations and insights about the area, and are beyond accommodating. Also, Laura, who lives on the resort and closes down the recreational building, is an absolute delight! She is very nice and helpful and even fun to hang out with! I 200% recommend this place if you are looking for a mountainous vacation surrounded by the best staff you could imagine.

There were a few beginner trails which were not as crowded as other mountains. Two of my kids went to the black trails and they said the trail was very short even though the difficulty level was up. The thing I did not like was that the lounge was at the top of the mountain instead of at the bottom, so basically I was unable to video or picture my kids snowboarding at all. We went on weekends and during the holiday week, but two of the lifts were not in operation. The line for the lift got a bit longer during the peak time. The group lesson seemed very crowded and the teacher / student ratio seemed high. Good to know that their tickets could be used at Big Boulder, so you could basically ski in two different mountains for the price of one ticket! The cost of the food was way over charged. I would recommend to go during weekdays if possible because it was crowded on weekends.

If you're an absolute beginner, it isn't a bad introduction to the world of snow sports. It's a small "mountain" and therefore very beginner friendly. They have a completely closed off area on one side that is entirely for beginners with conveyor lifts, very gentle and short slopes, and a short chairlift. There are also two green trails on the mountain designated as "slow skiing areas," though they might want to police them better as there were still several daredevils blasting by us. The whole process for rentals and lessons is a well-oiled machine and easy to navigate. My 11-year-old son had never been skiing or snowboarding before and was anxious to try. So this seemed like a logical spot to bring him. I had been here plenty of times as a kid in the 90's, but this was my first time back in decades. We came on a Sunday in March and arrived at 7:30. It was already crowded with cars and people at that point but we still got a good parking spot and picking up rental equipment was no problem. My son enjoyed his snowboarding lesson and was loving how quickly he was learning. I bought a lift pass for me + helmet rental, and a beginner package for him (this included snowboard/helmet rental, one hour lesson, and restricted lift ticket). All together this was $293, which seems wildly overpriced for the mountain we were on, especially considering my son was stuck to the beginner area all day unless we upgraded his lift ticket. But I guess this price is common in the skiing industry these days, and I hate to think what the big mountains out west are charging. If you're an experienced skier/snowboarder and live close by, it's probably not a bad place to get in a quick fix. As an experienced skier myself, it was a pleasant day on the slopes, but got a little boring after awhile. If I'm going to pay an arm and a leg, fight hordes of people all day, and drive for a few hours to get there, I'd rather do so on a bigger and more challenging mountain.
