I had no idea what this airport was gonna be like, all I know was I booked a flight from OAK to here EKO on Delta cause I needed to be out here faster than I could drive from Oakland. The flight sure wasn't cheap being last minute, but the company is paying so that's the deal! I've flown in and out of the little airport on Redding Ca, near where I live and this is a little bigger, but still a small airport. Not a ton of dining options like OAK, but then there no parking or crowd problems either. It does have a sort of rustic design to the terminal, but really do I care about what the place looks like, I just need to get ion and outta here a quick as I can. I was met easily by my contact person here in Elko, so that's way easier than like at OAK when I have to return. I had a decent experience here at EKO and I'd fly in and outta here again. This is a very small airport that has only 1 small building with 1 gate and 1 baggage carousel. There are only 3 TSA agents when going through security, one for ID/boarding passes, 1 at the metal detector and 1 to observe the monitor. The monitor attendant also performs bag checks. The security screening conveyor belt for baggage comes out directly at the 1 gate. No dining options once you're through security into the small waiting area, only a drink vending machine. Within the lobby of the airport are the mini museum, artist displays, 3 booths for car rentals, and snack area. To answer a couple complaints by other reviewers, they do now recognize pre-check and have a separate line to the left of general boarding. Also, for late arrival flights, Enterprise re-opens during that time. Car rental places are closed for the 535am flight to Salt Lake, but they have a drop box for the keys next to the entrance, so no big deal. My experience was very good. I have heard in the past from colleagues who fly through here more often that when there are issues with the plane, you're kinda screwed. read more

The airport was named J.C. Harris Field in 1975 in honor of Jess C. Harris, a sheriff from Elko known as "The Flying Sheriff" Currently it's a private plane facility and Delta offers connector flights between salt lake city. read more

Im sleeping in SLC airport tonight, because the airport in Elko is ridiculously incompetent, if its snowing and you know you need to de-Ice the plane, don't put the equipment away for everyone on the plane to wait over an hour and a half, so you can pull it out, you literally only fly to one place "SLC" and it snowed all day, you had one job Elko and you couldn't even pull that off correctly read more

The Elko Regional Airport has an awesome terminal and even better airport staff! They are always willing to go out of their way to help. The terminal has a lot of historical pieces and information on the history of the airport. Beware that some of the car rental facilities rotate staying open late for the late arrivals. We had enterprise and they were the only one not open when we arrived. read more

The airport is small. They don't recognize TSA pre-check status, so be prepared to get out your laptop and lose the shoes and jacket, regardless of how much you travel. It's an odd airport; they advertise how much cheaper and more convenient it is to fly through the local airport, but don't mention several important considerations for a traveler. 1) There is no rental car service available on Sunday. None. 2) Most days, there are only 2 or 3 flights in or out of the airport. Rental car service only runs until 5:30-6 PM. Again, that makes for major complications if you are on the 9:40 PM flight. If you are traveling in the local area (mines, Carlin, etc), you'll either need assistance from a local, or plan to drop a lot of money on a cab. If you are visiting Elko and have friends to pick you up, or if you are staying at one of the local casinos and are just in town to gamble, or if you work for a local mine or business that will provide transportation, these hassles are likely manageable. If you have a late flight in to Elko or a Sunday flight in and need to get where you are going late outside the strange rental agency hours but don't fit one of those categories I've noted above, you are probably better off flying in to Reno or Salt Lake City and renting a car. It's a hassle, but when I called the car agencies and asked their recommendations (I have a late flight in to the airport on a Friday evening, and need to get to an event that night, returning the car on Sunday), the only "constructive suggestion" I received was, get a hotel room and come rent a car on Saturday morning when we open at 9:30 AM. Elko, if you want to promote tourism and grow your business base, you need to pressure your local rental franchisees to actually consider the market and adjust their hours. read more

Some folk's just tend to get cornfused where they are. In Elko, you don't get the O'hare treatment. You get Elko. Keep that in mind and I'm sure you will have a good time. read more
