I pointed out to her that she may have made a mistake. She said to me there was no mistake. That was the cost due to the dollar days that they were practicing. I don't know if it was for only today but if you are in their vicinity you should go and check it out. I always donated clothes to them and then go back and buy more. This place is a gem and the people in there are truly nice.

Junior…read moreAchievement has gone out of their way to create an interactive town to teach kids how the economy works. The town is built up with places like Tampa General Hospital, Brighthouse, GTE Credit Union, Bank of America, Publix, Kanes Furniture, Raymond James, TECO, Busch Gardens, City Hall, McDonalds and small businesses like travel agencies, and IT firms. Volunteers are required to watch 3 training videos and get an hour and a half training the morning of the biz town field trip. We are assigned a service or retail business where we assist the children with running the business. I wasn't pleased when I found out I was working in McDonalds since I don't eat there and had brought in a protein bar and water for lunch! The kids field trip fee includes a meal at McDonald's and the volunteers can get lunch for $3. Since everyone in town eats lunch in McDonald's my group of children (and myself) was busy the entire day! I worked with another volunteer and 9 children. I was impressed at how the CEO and CFO of our group got to work on printing payroll and their duties right away! The front line staff wasn't following their guide books on their own, but as the drill sergeant style momager I am i was very serious with the kids about making sure their jobs were being done correctly. We had to pitch in with serving drinks because our lines were getting backed up, but for the most part we just had to give the kids good direction and I showered them with plenty of praise! Some of the children had so much fun working that they wanted to work at McDonalds when they are older! This turned out to be such a rewarding experience!...I still didn't eat the food! What was cool about the children's experience is that they got paid 2 paychecks and had specific instructions on how they can spend their money. They had to deposit their checks, save a portion, donate to charity, pay bills and have money for snacks, lunch and to spend in the town. Everything had to be updated in their check register. The businesses took specific types of payments, like cash only, check only and credit/debit card only. These kids take BizTown seriously! They are exhausted after a busy work day. They have town hall meetings, they vote and work and play like real citizens of a town. The kids really learn how a town's economy runs, how important it is to do a good job at work, how to manage their finances and how it feels to be a responsible grown up. Parents do not get to help their own child for good reason. This teaches kids to work independently and with others without relying on their parents to pick up pieces for them. They learn to figure things out...and become enlightened on how stuff works. Parents are allowed to eat lunch with their child. The staff runs a tight ship, the facility is immaculate, and they do a great job running this program. I hope all Junior Achievement centers offer such service and support to kids across the America. Biztown should be a must for every child to experience.

Came as a chaperone today with my daughter and her school. Easy to find and very impressive setup…read more They did have some hiccups with the sign in system this morning as their table system wasn't working so we had to create handwritten name tags to wear during our time there. Volunteers arrived by 8am for a training session prior to the students arriving. They had coffee and water available for visitors. Training began around 8:30am given the manual check in process which was unplanned and out of their control but the staff made the best of it and got everyone through. The JA staff was very friendly and attentive to the needs throughout the day. Great experience for students and volunteers! It's fun to see the kids work in real life experiences and balance their finances accordingly. Although this is a learning environment it's made fun and interactive with the students. Some of the students felt rushed given the time constraints of getting their work done along with dependence of their coworkers and the break schedules. Overall I believe everyone had a great time!

Lighthouse Ministries…read more A look inside: Pastor Joe got me an uber there on a Wednesday afternoon, as I was to participate in their "volunteer" program. I listed on my application that I take Suboxone and have for years. No issue. On Friday afternoon a guy named Reggie shows up and tells me to leave immediately. (Let me add that on Thursday i had to go to the ER and get antibiotics for strep throat). The reason I had to leave is that I take Suboxone. He says it will make me drop dirty for benzodiazepines and amphetamines, both of which is totally false and literally scientifically impossible. Reggie has a volunteer follow me around as I pack up my stuff, saying i need to leave right now over and over as if I did something wrong, when I absolutely haven't. While I was there i seen that in the mornings after the over night guests leave, the volunteers are tasked with staging the dorms to look a certain way --just in case-- if any donors might want to walk through. So, every morning 120 bunks are made up nicely with nice sheets and blankets etc just so that at 2pm another volunteer can go around and rip all the stuff back off the beds. I asked why they did this? And was told it was to stage the property to look a certain way, to look "nice" if anyone were to want to walk through before or after donating money. They don't help volunteers not program participants get jobs. But rather promote the homeless to pay $7 per night to stay from 4pm-6am everyday. Even if you work you can't enter after the usual 4-5pm check in time. So they really aren't trying to better anyone's life. I would bet plenty of money is collected to allow for their "programs" and "volunteers". But it's all misdirection and deception. Staging daily. Kicking people out for no reason. Not really trying to help people with employment or flexibility. And it's all done in the name of God. Pretty sure God brought me to Lakeland just so I could witness this atrocious behavior and people. The donation/thrift section refuses to take a desk…read morebecause they "don't take desks", a table because it has a scratch mark, a large dresser because it had testing paint (I was planning on repainting it but never got around to it), and the 2 end tables that went with the dresser because the legs are "loose". These pieces of furniture survived being moved twice and been around for decades. Of course it's not going to be brand new looking. And all that is needed is some TLC. The only thing they took was a massive China cabinet. For a church, this is very not-church-like. Especially the two gentlemen had a vibe of being pretentious. They did take the smaller box/bag items though which is why it's a 2 star instead of 1. They also lack communication. We were told they would go across the street to get their stuff. My mother called the day before to be sure the day before pick up, they never called back. They called the day of and said they'd call us when they were 20 minutes out and would not because they were booked (which is fair, but they should have said so earlier). They actually called when they were 10 minutes out so we were scrambling to get their stuff to our house. I think they refused to take it because they, the drivers, didn't want to put in any effort and actually work. We won't be donating to them again. Instead we have another that would take just about anything, give it the TLC it needs and sell it to someone who needs it.

Guests are called Sir or Madame and are served plates of food of their choosing, not a buffet line. Their food donors include Panera Bread, Pane Rustica, Starbucks, & Krispy Kreme. The building is new and clean. All managed and maintained by volunteers from seven nearby churches.
