I want to love this store as it carries beautiful items and the location is key. However, their staff is so rude that I feel like I am putting them out when I ask to look at their items in display cases. They are way over priced too! For a place with bougie aspirations, this store lacks all class. In response to my warning to customers that they be vigilant that it's not super clear what can be returned, the owner gave this underhanded, passive-aggressive response: I am sorry that had a less than stellar experience, as it is our goal for all of our shoppers to be happy with their gifts. However there is a sign at the counter, there is an indication on the receipt that is being signed when using a credit card as well as the copy that is taken, and your husband was informed when he made this purchase because he asked. His response was, "Okay, well I hope these are the right ones!" We gave him the chance to choose something else if she was not sure, and he seemed confident in his purchase. I am sorry he was not confident enough to tell you this himself. My husband was pretty pissed, to say the least, that a store owner would claim that he said that in response to being apprised of the store's policy (he remembers saying it in response to the general purchase), and that she went on to insult his confidence. (It may have said that on the receipt--I haven't checked--but according to CA law, it's insufficient to post a return policy on a receipt.) Nothing like an ad hominem attack to build a customer base. read more

I'd give 4 stars for their immaculate displays and lovely wares, but I felt incredibly uncomfortable here after being scolded quite rudely for taking a photograph. I can dig shop rules, and I should have asked first, but there were much more polite ways to inform. When selling stuff that is available elsewhere, friendly service is tres important. The staff at this store is so pretentious and rude. I went in with my 2 toddlers and the store owners kids was following us around the entire time. Mind you my one year old broke and ornament - which I of course paid for!!!!! And she also put a rattle that was in a basket on the floor - they had there 8 year old kid tell me we needed to pay for that - fine. They were so rude and hovering over us. My kids were asking like kids and not touching things that I told them not to touch but they are little and act their age. I have never been in a store that sells items for babies and toddlers and is so rude to toddlers!!!!! I am so happy all of the items from this over priced store are easily found at other places such as amazon as I will never shop there again. read more

They have plenty of expensive but cute-as-heck designer stationery, including letterpress'd greeting cards. Oh, and soap crap. And fancy fragrances. And Diptyque candles. Can kill about a good 15-20 minutes while waiting for a table at Rick & Ann's. If I had a trust fund, maybe I'll fork over $45 for a box of letterpressed embellishments. read more

I like this place a lot for cute note or thank you cards, as well as for its scented hand creams, which are wonderful. They also have gorgeous, super-soft bathrobes that are amazing. All in all, a very cute little shop for last minute gifts or little treats for yourself. read more

Found so many fun treasures here that I didn't even know I was looking for! Amazing bath products (I got a delicious smelling Lychee Rose soap for only $6), adorable cards, beautiful kitchenware, and cute kids' things (I got a set of "Best Chums" baby booties for a friend who is expecting). Just a fun store to browse and ultimately find some really cute and fun treats. Yes, some things were out of my budget, but there were a lot of affordable special things too. I actually appreciate the more "hands-off" approach of the employees. I was there with my boyfriend's mom and we were chatting, so it was nice not to be bothered. I actually prefer that kind of service until I have a question or need help! I didn't realize until after we walked out with my purchases that we were actually shopping past their closing time. Who Needs excellent customer service when you can browse around for hours, smelling the wonderful french scent's and dreaming you are in Paris. I love the French countryside cook books the linens, post cards and the table settings.Have a good time. I have been in this store countless times over the years. The store's displays are beautiful and they have really nice, quality items to buy. EVERY TIME I ask for a kraft box instead of bag with tissue I get ATTITUDE. EVERY TIME. This happened again today. Although I'm super busy today, the service was so bad I took time to write this review. One of the reasons I shop here for gifts is the high quality gifts AND HIGH QUALITY WRAP. When I asked for two individual boxes, instead of excellent customer service, I received the opposite. "We don't usually do this for people..." along with an arrogant attitude. When I said that when I ask for a box, I'm given one, I got more attitude! I am in the customer service business myself. Attention owner: you have a customer BUYING ITEMS in your store; if they ask for a box wrap vs a bag wrap, shouldn't you HAPPILY give it to the customer and complete their shopping experience on a POSITIVE NOTE so that they will want to come back again? The thing is, I have experienced this about ten times in the past from this store...had it just been once I would have assumed the person helping me was having a bad day. Hopefully the owner will have a talk with his assistants? Don't pretend the shop is a French boutique if it's really not. OVER PRICED! While waiting for friends to have breakfast at Rick & Ann's, we went into this cute store. While there is some cute stuff - it is not high quality and is really over priced. The store is interesting if you like exotic soaps and candles but its the same items (linens, plates and glasses) you find in Napa/Sonoma or 4th street in Berkeley. Nothing special or original. I was a little miffed by the lack of attention by the sales person behind the counter. The rather large woman was more interested in her computer than paying any attention to me. read more

BUYER BEWARE: RUDE/BAD VALUE. if you buy something here make sure you absolutely will not need to return it. My beloved bought me pajamas for my birthday. I'm on the small size but the bottoms didn't fit- I went back to return it for a medium -still didn't fit- - poorly designed -The crotch was way too short. They offered an exchange but with their small selection especially around xmas time when things are picked over- I found nothing I wanted or needed. I asked if I could get a store credit for the future. I was told I had to chose something within 7 days- in a store with very little choice, expensive and a bad value. The worst part though was the store owner/manager a large woman- was extremely rude to me. I've noticed several people have said the same in these reviews. There are other nicer local shops like The Gardener-and a few on College Ave with similar merchandise. I suggest you go there instead to support merchants who care about their customers. read more

I agree with the reviewer who said she doesn't mind if shop employees don't instantly acknowledge her. My perfect shopping experience is when I need help, that help is prompt and courteous. I was in Williams Sonoma the other day and no less than 7 people asked me if I needed help and it started to get really annoying after a while. Same with Nordstrom. It can be too much sometimes. I'm writing this because my first thought would be to contact the owner about their less than courteous employee but the receipt info. indicates it was the owner who took my cash. I bought two fancy chocolate bars and I was charged tax. I asked "So, is there tax on food here?" (thinking that maybe because it was a gift store??) and she said "Yes, all to-go food is taxable." I said it was the other way around and that to-go is tax-free. She told me I could come back with proof if I wanted her to believe me and she pointed out that she had not charged me 10 cents for the paper bag. (She had also not asked me if I wanted a bag, which I did not.) So, yes, most food including candy is exempt from sales tax in California. (Board of Equalization, Article 8, Regulation 1602. Food Products at CA.gov.) If she's actually paying the tax to the State, I don't mind so much. Even if I had been wrong, I would not have expected an owner to be so unpleasant. It's too bad, because as some have mentioned, she has great merchandise. read more

I too wanted to like this store. But, these people are beyond rude and it's totally sanctioned by the owner! When I was shopping there 2 young sales women followed me around and every time I picked something up to check out, they were Right behind me to put it back exactly as they thought it should be. Come on now - I'm a neat freak myself but they are way over the top. Can you say OCD!? That's one way to look at it - But it also felt like they were following me because they thought I was going to steal something. Maybe - just maybe I didn't fit the right "profile" for their store. I got so tired of it that I commented on it directly to the woman. She got indignant and denied what she was doing. I then asked to speak to the owner (the large woman) who witnessed everything and she was worse! She got angry and didn't want to hear it. So - you know where her employees get their attitudes/perspectives. Clearly, I'm not the only one who has suffered from their rudeness and misguided sense of themselves and store.
