Second, definitely negotiate. Lastly, if you like picking for stuff, you can find something. It's a lot of junk, but treasure is in the eye of the beholder, especially if you like tsotchkes. I ended up with a hand painted wooden duck decoy from 1981. It's def someone who randomly painted one, and not a priceless artifact, but I'm ok with that. I also ended up getting an old framed small print of a poem, and a vintage Thomas Stanley travel alarm clock that's currently not working, hopefully due to an old battery, but if it's up and running, I saw them on Etsy for $50. All three treasures for the price of $15! Overall, a gem of a store if you are nearby and have a few minutes to explore.

He's always patient, happy to answer questions, and never ever pressures anyone to buy anything. It actually feels like you're visiting a collector's den or small museum where most things just happen to be for sale. I've learned a lot about textiles, woven blankets, and handmade quilts from Kingsley and am thankful for the time he took to get his newly acquired "baby" out of the back to show me. We both have a fascination with learning how things are made and we're dazzled by the work on this one. Speaking of "how things are made": he knows a guy named Cort that fixes and cleans old pocket and wrist watches. I bought an antique pocket watch from him a few years ago at a great price and it keeps time perfectly. I had also requested/mentioned I was looking for a specific vintage watch and he found one! Once again: great price. There have been slight issues with watch repair only because of the pandemic making many parts hard to find. I heard that the main source to get things may be or has already closed for good. It's rare to find people and items like the ones you'll find in this shop. I guess I got on the wrong bus, because after it went through the tunnel, it turned left onto The Alameda. Whoops, I'd better get off here. I stepped off the bus, and landed right in front of Hana Japanese Antiques. The storefront is Arts & Crafts-looking, which, as you know, incorporates Japanese aesthetics. Immediately, I felt like I was walking into a Yasujiro Ozu movie circa 1920's. I heard the tinkling of water flowing in a fountain, my feet padded along a stone pebble entryway. I descended down old wooden steps and carefully moved into the main part of the store. I saw tonsu of different sizes and styles, including one made to fit under a flight of stairs. The tables and cabinets were adorned with fabrics, plates, teacups, vases and little plants in their ceramic containers. Vintage lamps here and there cast their warm amber light upon the many vignettes. I ended up buying a tea cup and saucer set that was glazed, but had a rough and enjoyable tactile feel. The price was a very reasonable $15. Prices for tonsu looked reasonable too. The owner, Susan, was chill and easy to talk to.
