THE LOCATION is west midtown, parking was either valet or find a space on the street... we ended up on some side street, but it was fine. THE CROWD was kinda awesome. Very diverse and traditionally artsy folks... with some hipsters and regulars mixed in. It was a little too crowded though, they had a cash bar with beer only. Beer? Beer? Really though... a little Trader Joe's wine would have went a long way. THE ART was cool. One artist created prints using the word "word". Another merged body parts in symmetry creating a landscape via ink/pen. These seem to be those independent do what I want, I think this would be cool art school kinda artist if that makes any sense. You know the kids who dye there hair blue or pink or purple... thats this crowd. Prices for art was in the $3000 range on average for the bigger works. I may have saw a few pieces that were a couple hundred (lets say $300ish range) Overall, good vibes, cool art, interesting people, huge crowd, nice space... I'll probably always give art galleries no less than a 4 even if I wanted to.

I've spent some time here, at shows, and hanging out. What a gem. Yu-Kai and his staff, have begun to spin a web that may actually foster an art community in Atlanta. That would be a first since the demise of ACA. Stop in some time. Take in what's on the walls. Talk to the staff. Ask for a cup of coffee. These people are intelligent, and nice. An amazingly refreshing venue in our often disconnected city!

I went there to see a photographic exhibition by Decatur artist Conne Thalken, who - full disclosure - is a friend. Her work is excellent, of course, but this review is for the gallery. Whitespace is inside a carriage house behind an old home near where Euclid Ave splits off Edgewood. The gallery has two medium-sized rooms designed to hang art work or host an installation. It's intimate, but still large enough for a fair-sized opening. I like the character inside the space and the Inman Park location adds considerable ambiance. It's a great place to see art. Parking is not abundant with but a few spaces inside the grounds. If attending an opening, you'll need to park on the street, which isn't a big problem in this area.

In this opportunity I'm going to talk about Whitespace, my favorite art gallery in Atlanta! Whitespace was founded by art facilitator and connoisseur Susan Bridges, and it's a gem of Atlanta's cultural life. Not only because it's "a unique art venue which represents emerging and established contemporary artists," as they describe the gallery in their website, but also because their whole space is gorgeous and refined, without being snobbish or pretentious. Every time I plan to go there, I know I'm going to see interesting and carefully curated artwork, while having a wonderful time enjoying both the featured pieces and the place. Whitespace is a delightful cluster of bricks shaped by a front/side garden-patio, a spectacular 1893 house and what I consider a demi-house --where several rooms graciously host the artwork. I strongly recommend you pretty ladies and keen gentlemen interested in the arts, to keep informed of their fun openings through their website http://www.whitespace814.com/. If you catch a form, a color palette, a medium that thrills you, and the opening date related to all previously mentioned and attend it, join their mailing list by signing up in their reception. By the by, their openings are usually FABULOUS celebrations. Back in July 2007, they had a show featuring womanhood through the figure of Frida Khalo (Viva La Frida), where they showcased painting, photography, sculpture (featuring a very impressive cake-sculpture that was eaten afterward), performance and video. The party they put together for the opening included a beautiful candlelit flower altar that welcomed the public, right next to a chic "margarita" open bar, some delicious ouer d'oeuvres, and a burlesque live show by Atlanta's cabaret dancers the Dames AFlames (hot stuffff! http://www.damesaflame.com/peek2.htm). It was great and multilayered. I'm sure it'll be always great, and that they will have plenty of superb, five-star exhibits throughout the year!

The soft opening was last night and Emerging Art Scene will continue to participate in the Monthly Art Stroll occurring the second Friday of each month. The new gallery is a two-story live/work space with a really cool glass "storefront" entrance, and would be perfect for lots of events and parties and is available for rental. Works by previous artists like Julie Ross as well as new and exciting local talents are shown on both floors. I have my eye on several . . . must get that new place soon and save up for the amazing one of the woman in the black dress (second floor at the top of the stairs), for sure!

I recently attended the opening of Corrine Colarusso's Shaggy Land exhibit (go see it! it's up till…read moreApril 2!) at Sandler Hudson and I was really impressed with the space. My only previous experience with the gallery has been annoyance at the 2 prime reserved spots they've got in the Octane parking lot. Yes, they deserve these spots, but when I'm lugging a giant ancient computer and feeling lazy, I have certainly shaken my fist at them before. The space itself is beautiful, and quite fitting for Corinne's oversized work. There is one main room that is large enough that you can appreciate each piece individually but yet intimate enough to see everything as a whole collection. There's also a small room at the front which is a great spot for smaller pieces, as there's not enough room to really step back and see something big, but it has great light. This isn't a gallery I'd necessarily recommend for private events (they don't have nice bathrooms or the right layout like spots like Kai Lin) but it's definitely worth a spot, or at least a peek in the windows to see what great local artist they may be featuring.
