This review is specifically for the Plaza Theatre attached to the library. How did I, a Broadway theater lover, not know about this hidden gem right here on Long Island?? Broadway quality shows for a fraction of the price. The Plaza Organization had humble beginnings in the early 80's. They have provided countless shows, workshops etc. since then. Working with various organizations across Long Island. The new venue at the library opened in January 2021. The 7000 square foot space houses a 420 seat theater and various offices. It puts on fully staged Broadway performances complete with a live orchestra! My friends and I had the pleasure of seeing their production of South Pacific on Friday 10/15/2021. It was spectacular! There are three other plays slated to run to complete the entire season. Each production runs for four weeks. I am currently gathering more friends and family to see their next production, Man Of La Mancha!! Visited on a Sunday to take an online exam. Phil at the "Information Desk" (I think that was his name) was friendly, helpful and accommodating. He identified an unoccupied space in the library upon my request, that allowed my three friends and I to remain together safely while following the social distancing guidelines since we were with a proctor. (Using our personal laptops and sitting alone & separately at a table.) Lisa, in the Youth Section was great too, by making an exception for us to use the area since it was not occupied. She showed us where we could work temporarily and came around to collect our ID's. All the years I've lived in this area, I never realized this library was so close to my house. It's a hidden gem. Clean and spacious too. I usually drive out to Freeport, but will definitely visit again. read more

The only public library that actually is exceptionally clean and I do like studying here as they are very clean but the librarians that work here are ridiculously loud. First few times the noise level wasn't so bad but over the course of time I have noticed the librarian are very loud when answering calls, talking to library visitors, and among themselves. Like you can literally hear them on the second floor as well. Seems to be the librarians forget the simple rule themselves to be respectful and keep the noise level low. Plenty of space to park your vehicle without a hassle even during peak hours. They have 2 group study rooms that can only be reserved for 2 hours and within a group of 2 or more. A quiet study area if you want absolute peace but trust me it's not like literally quite. I sat there few times and experienced annoying people malign noises. There's a second floor with library books and 3 tables to study. The ground floor has computer lounge, plenty of tables to study, teen and children study area. Bathrooms are clean for a public place!! Absolutely love this library! Since moving out of Elmont, I've been to a number of other libraries, and they pale in comparison to this library. Surprisingly, I didn't always have this love for this library. Prior to being located at this new building, the Elmont library was in a much smaller building. I recall feeling that the old library had a more "home-y" feeling while the new one (current one) felt so collegiate and I didn't believe that in a good way. This current one grew on me over the years. I have been able to be super productive for school, and I love that most of the tables have individual lamps. I'm sure others have realized the convenience of the personal lamps, especially when they're working alongside others and yet sensitive to how bright their work environment is. The setup and selection is amazing. You have your movies and DVDs at the front, the young adult books/novels off on the shelves just by the theater, and the travel section and cookbooks among others are upstairs. The second floor is cool because you can go there and chat quietly, as for group projects for example. But there are also the group rooms (which you'll have to make a reservation for, and for which I believe the time limit is 1 or 2 hours, can't remember which and maybe there are ways to extend). I saw an Aladdin production in the theater one year and it was pretty good! Having the theater alone is cool in itself! I've been to other libraries where the parking is not nearly as spacious or convenient (like you'd have to cross the street or spend time finding street parking nearby). But here, the library has its very own large parking lot! With no time limit! And the library also has programs (like cooking, music, movies) for kids, teens, seniors... Did not get an opportunity to attend one, but they all seemed legitimate and worthwhile. (I did do one of the programs where teens read to little kids at the old Elmont library, and that was cool, so I'm guessing they are still of the same quality). This is such a great library, and shame on me for feeling it was "too collegiate" at the beginning. read more

Just visited with my parents as I'm looking to get them involved in more activities. I just got myself a replacement card and a new one for mom. Note: They require 2 forms of ID with address. The librarians who helped us were very sweet, and someone from the back came up and registered my mom for chair yoga so she didn't have to run back there. (They were close to closing already.) I researched a couple of local senior centers and was disappointed that offer very little as far as activities and food choice. This library is clean, updated, and offers many activities for all ages. Looking forward to seeing how they enjoy it. read more

I love this library so much. They have a large section of anything and everything you can think of. They have a children's section which is mandatory for my little family. The children's section has various rooms for multiple purposes. They offer classes for parents and kids. They have a play castle as well. Tablets and so many books are available for the children. They have study rooms and study areas. They have a second floor that has a limited amount of chairs and study areas as well. The building is beautiful and it has so many different areas that you can be isolated in. What's even more amazing is that the library is open everyday of the week! It doesn't get any better than that. read more

I can't believe this is a public library because it's kept very clean, the entire library is usually quite (if you really need to focus you can use the quite study room) but the library strictly enforces no outside food (water is allowed) and low noise level. Surprisingly a good library. It's quiet, clean, and has working wifi. There seems to be a good collection of books, magazines, and sitting space. The demographic is diverse and everyone is just working hard. Have been here only to see shows. Very nice local theater. Saw little shop of horrors which was great! Saw Saturday night fever which was ok. Sound was off. Microphones crackling, going in and out. Microphones much louder than music. Would have been much more enjoyable if sound was better. Also, do yourself a favor and order tickets via phone. You will save service charge and can pick your seats. You do not want to sit up close. read more

I just want to make a shoutout to the reference department of this library that assisted me when I needed to find a book for school. They helped me save $25 that I would have to spend in Barnes and Noble! They looked through the system to find out what library in Nassau County had my book and gave me the address/phone number! Since Valley Stream's library is horrible and lacks anything that even resembles a quality book selection, I decided to go to the Elmont library because it's close and if you live in Nassau County, you can use your home library card to take out books from any Nassau library (it's true!) Elmont's library is absolutely insane. It's huge, has lots of parking, and good hours. From the outside, it's gorgeous, way better looking than Valley Stream's crappy 60's art deco nonsense library, which I'll probably never return to. Inside, there's a kid section, quiet study room, local history room, reference computers, even more study room, huge selection, and self-checkout! The coolest feature in the library, other than self-checkout, is on the second floor in the non-fiction section. It looks awfully dark while you're walking up the stairs, but you turn down an aisle and that aisle's lights light up! MOTION SENSORS! I was floored. Yeah, that's both environmentally and studying friendly. It was awesome. The only issue is that the address is not what's listed on yelp. It's not on Elmont Rd, it's on the north side of Hempstead Turnpike between Elmont Rd and Meacham. It's easy to get to and worth the trip. read more

I grew up in the adjacent Village of Floral Park but live in Queens, now. However, we go to the areas around Floral Park and decided to join the Elmont Memorial Library as a couple ($145 a year) because we felt sheepish using a library to which we did not pay taxes. So, now we go there as members. It's such a beautiful, airy, light filled building! The new book displays are wonderful and the librarians helpful. We couldn't get over the theater. Incredible! We have to go to one of the shows or movies! I cannot get over the beauty of this library. The patrons seem to love it as much as we do. Kudos who whoever designed and funded this library. Although I live on the other side of the NYC/Nassau County border, I go to this library on weekends and am really impressed. It has two floors and a theater. The children section also has computers for kids to use in half hour increments which has tutoring on it although I don't know how it works. They have a lot of events to take your children too and private study rooms you can sign up for in order to avoid too many distractions. It's really clean and the staff are all really sweet and have developed relationships with the people who frequent the library. Its also open every day of the week unlike some queens public libraries and is a nice place to study if you can't do it at home. read more

This is my go-to study spot when I can't study at home and I don't feel like going all the way back to school. This library is located just minutes away from the Queens border. If you live in Nassau County you can use your library card here to take out books/ movies as you would at your home site. This brand new library is very clean and doesn't feel like your typical ancient, old school, 70'd themed library. It's gorgeous on the outside with its super sized parking lot, and on the inside it's just spectacular with its two floors and a theater. There's a children's section which has computers for tutoring use in half hour increments; other reference computers; a quiet study room (many study areas); a history room; huge selection of books, and self-checkout. If your walking upstairs to the second floor where the non-fiction books are it looks creepily dark, but just as you turn down the aisle of your choice the area lights up! It's kind of cool, not only for the environment, but studying purposes as well. The staff members here are really sweet and develop relationships with the regulars. Now-a-days that's hard to find at a library because everyone is so concerned with telling people to be quite. There are a lot of things you can sign up for here such as shows / plays or events that cater to the children; I believe they even have some adult ed. Classes too. I know off hand in the summer they have like jewelry classes, a babysitting certification, and a cookie cake baking class. Not your typically public library. I love that they have quiet room for when you want to get your serious study on and they have two private study rooms for groups which is great. I previously lived in Elmont and still visit th branch. I now live in Queens and enjoy the Queens Central library in Jamaica. 1st off this library is clean and spacious. Well equipped with computers for all patrons. I signed up for the Free Museum pass they give for children and enjoyed a cost free day at the Long Island Children's Museum. The Children's Center has a beautiful castle that serves as a play room for Toddler's. My daughter enjoys going and there are lots of toys to choose from. Their books, audio and DVD's are current and if not you can always order express from another branch. read more

Spacious library. Though there were kids (because it was a summer break time) it was still quiet and pleasant. I also like the high ceiling. An area for Children and another for teens, and different spaces including a 'quiet study room.' There was a table designated for puzzles, coloring books and color pencils for grown-ups. Many book and computer desks were available as well. A big parking lot! No worries about parking. I liked it very much. read more

I am so excited to have found it. -the parking lot is large and always has plenty of room -the library is large with a children's section and teen's section in addition to the main areas. -tables for studying or reading are ample in amount (about 4 per table) -an area of couches exists -computers are available to use -laptops can be borrowed from the front desk -study rooms can be booked with a partner and ID at the reference desk -a closed off quite room exists for those in beast mode (about 15 people can study here) Areas for possible improvement include: -library hours are better than other libraries in the area but could be better (8:45 is closing on most days) -cubicles would be nice read more

I'm a librarian so I do try to stay away from reviewing libraries since I'm in the field, even though I do love this library this review is more for the theatre that is on the library's premises. I've been to this theatre twice for performances from the Broadhollow theatre group which travels to Elmont for performances. The first time I saw Swing, the second time I saw my favorite story, the Maury Yeston/Arthur Kopit Version of Phantom. The theatre is pretty nice, it's clean, the seats are your average theatre seats, performances are pretty cheap but very well done, a great way to see theatre without expensive Broadway prices. read more

This is a beautiful library. There are plenty of outlets and lighting. HOWEVER, the librarians in the teen room speak very loudly which is very disruptive to those who are trying to focus. There are also patrons who can be loud and disruptive (i.e. talking on their cell phone), at which point the librarians should politely ask the patrons to be respective of those around them. read more

I absolutely love this library. However, I wish the staff would keep the noise level down when speaking amongst themselves and visitors :-).

Obviously the interior of this library is awesome given the recent renovations, everything looks brand new and state of the art. The only problems I have are the librarians in the front talking loudly to one another and the internet blocking my universities academic journal search engines. Without the ability to search for references over the wifi it become impossible for me to research my papers and homework. I'm not sure why this happens but all other websites work for me besides these. Disappointing because I love doing work here. I hope someone will read this review and hopefully be able to address this issue in the future! read more

My fav library!! I drive 20 minutes to come here. There's plenty of space, outlets and parking. They have long hours which helps tremendously for board exam study. The staff members are friendly and helpful. There's also a quiet study room with about ten chairs. read more
