The phone number says the business is closed during the stated open hours and I get hung up on. I never received a bill but they put a lien on my car accident claim. If this isn't a scam, why not send bills to patients?? And customer service if this isn't a scam is beyond atrocious. read more

After getting numerous invoices with different amounts due I finally called and was told I was due $24.48 which I mailed. I received another statement with 21.58 due and something told me to call. Well they cashed my check and didn't apply it. I called and was told they would need to research and a supervisor would call me back. That didn't happen so I'm on the phone again and there were no notes on my account regarding this. So again after 30 mins I'm told a supervisor "ken" would call me back...this is the worst experience ever. I go round and round with the reps and no resolution. Luckily I don't live too far from this office so I may need to waste my time and go there to actually get this resolved. If I could give them zero stars I certainly would. read more

One visit to the Reston Hospital Center emergency and one stitch at my son's upper lip. Beside the outrageous charge of $800+ dollars which we finally pay, the annoying part is that we have bills from Reston Hospital Center, Parallon, and finally from Emergency Medicine Associates. Received a double bill from these guys for an emergency room visit. Insurance paid the emergency room in full, paid the copay, and then received a collection letter from this entity for a doctors charge of over $1000 for the same visit! Not only that, it's impossible to get someone on the phone to sort this out. read more

The providers were great! However, the billing side of the company is a completely different story. The first bill I received noted that the insurance didnt pay for anything and I was responcible for the whole bill. After calling the insurance company, they said that EMA filled out the CMS1500 (billing) form incorrectly. I called EMA and they said they would resubmit the bill correctly. At this point I just thought that the billing staff was incompetent. The next bill came with insurance paying for a portion for some codes and denying others. The bill said that i owed for the remaining portion of those codes and the full amount for the other codes. This is where I started to think that the billing practices were a little more sinister. After another call to my insurance, they said that I was not responsible for the remainder of the codes they paid for and the provider contract says that they need to accept what they pay as paid in full. EMA neglected to write off those charges and hoped that I would just cut a check. The other codes that the insurance didnt pay for said that they requested more information from EMA but instead of sending that info, they thought they would just bill me. Not writing off the portion of the bill for the codes paid in full is insurance fraud. Billing me for the items that they needed to send more information is just evil. I'm sure they are just hoping that people don't know about their insurance and pay more than they are required to do. Unfortunately, nobody has a choice about whether or not go to this practice. They are employed at the hospital and other than a small notice posted on the wall, you would never know that your hospital copay doesnt cover their services. Given what I know now, I wont be going back to that hospital again. I spoke with EMA for a 3rd time and they will "resubmit the bill again". I'm hopeful that this will resolve the issues, but after reading the other reviews, I'm convinced that they will continue taking advantage of people with their shady billing practices. read more

EMA billing is completely incompetent. I have been billed multiple times for care that was not received. I have sent my insurance information and that has not stopped the billing either. Virginia Hospital outsources its ER services to EMA, I sat in the waiting area of the ER for 10-15 minutes, and left on my own accord. Spoke to one doctor or nurse, and that's it, no medicine no procedure no nothing. All attempts to receive an itemized bill detailing charges and charge codes have failed. I walked out of the hospital on my own and nothing happened. My bill for $495 has reached the collections point, I received a debt letter for Client Services. read more

My review is very similar to L.L.'s review. My husband was in the ER at Reston Hospital in Feb of 2019. Since this is a Kaiser facility, all billing is to go through Kaiser. EMA (Altheon Health) sent us a bill in March and I immediately called and gave Erica our insurance information. I never received another bill from EMA so I assumed this had been handled with Kaiser. Today, 1/8/2020, I received a bill from Phoenix Financial Services, a collection agency wanting to settle this debt. I called them to dispute it and a very rude agent named Mary started yelling at me. I'm not currently on hold with Kaiser, who has been on hold with EMA for the past hour, trying to get this figured out. read more

Emergency Medicine Associates wrongfully sent an $84 charge in my name to a Debt Collection Agency called Main Line Recovery Solutions (MLRS). Since speaking with them on the phone, it was realized that I had made this payment back in January and it failed to be distributed to the appropriate doctors. They've sent my information to their Accounting Dept., so that they may contact the Debt Collection Agency MLRS in order to grant me a refund for the $84 that I have now paid twice. This needs to happen ASAP. I had intended to finance a car and was only made aware of this outstanding debt when checking my credit report. MLRS has yet to hear from EMA, despite their own attempts to contact EMA via e-mail. It is imperative that they hear from EMA in order to expedite the removal of this claim off of my credit history. MLRS has kindly taken it upon themselves to reach out to the EMA on my behalf. This problem can be resolved in its entirety by simply replying 'yes, this charge was sent in error' to MLRS's email. Seeing as this was EMA's fault, it should not have to go through a tedious accounting process in order to get resolved. There is no excuse for their incompetence. I have contacted the Better Business Bureau of DC who will now be handling this complaint. If EMA fails to contact MLRS within a timely manner, further legal action will be pursued. Please send me the head of your Accounting Dept.'s contact number, along with your Legal Dept. phone number. read more

I got a nice reply from EMA. It was Chris from the other positive review. Maybe he can help resolve this. After calls and a letter I got nothing. Thanks Yelp for getting at least a reply. More to come! I got a call from EMA and they knocked $100 off my bill. So my part of the bill is under $150. I decided to pay as I feel this was a good faith effort to resolve this. For the record, the bill from putting on sling in the ER was $698. What the hell is wrong with us? We put up with this crap! Come on people, we can do better. This said, it is fair to point out that everyone a EMA was professional and on-point once I finely got a reply to my Yelp comments. Frankly, that is about the best we can hope for now days. My beef was about why I was billed and the bottom line it was SOP for the healthcare industry. It was not about EMA. I may not like it, but I have to admit the team was doing a good job. In no way does Reston Hospital make it clear to you that you will receive multiple bills for the same visit. Worst yet, they don't share insurance information so you are SOL if Emergency Medicine Associates decides to take a few months to bill you for the charges (which they do, surprise! mailings). You go to the ER, get (decent) service, and then the bills start piling up. EMA literally sent me an approx. $1500 bill for "EMERGENCY DEPT VISIT". You can't make this up (I asked for a detail of charges). Pretty much anywhere else I got, I get a detailed bill of services. They just extract thousands of dollars off your pocket, for no noticeable service (all the other bills already add up to $5000+). read more

Doctors are great! Esp the neonatal doctors who took care of my son during his NICU stay at RHC. But unfortunately, their billing department is ridiculous! Bc what happened with us is we got overbilled. Which cost us to pay more than the actual bill that we are only supposed to pay and on top of that bills still keeps coming until now and my insurance company keeps on receiving claims twice that they already paid for. And everytime I have to call their office they cannot solve any billing issue which forces me to call my insurance company again and again. Piece of advice- always always check with your insurance all the claims they pay/paid for and how much you owe EMA. I wish I could give "zero" stars. Just received a collections letter from EMA for an emergency room visit at Reston Hospital Center that was in 2018. EMA did not bill my insurance company correctly after I called their office and gave it to them within a timely manner. They did NOT provide another notice or bill. Received a bill from EMA for a visit on 03/24/2019 and I paid all copays and no patient responsibility was due. The RHC hires these professional staffers and they do not give them insurance information. when I gave them they collected it and said they will process. Rather they sold the bill to collection companies. The collection company also did the same. took insurance information but never billed insurance knowing that no patient responsibility remaining and they can't make money. Now EMA is sold to Altheon. Over a year ago, I received a bill from EMA for a visit at Stone Springs Hospital Center. I called them, since I had already paid my copay and my insurance stated I did not owe anything additional. They said I needed to call my insurance company. Fine, I did that. My insurance company told me they have a department for this, and they'd work it out. Didn't hear from EMA again, until today, OVER A YEAR LATER. They've sent my "debt" to collections. I called EMA, waited on hold for 40 minutes, then finally got someone on the phone. He asked for my name and phone number, then said "one moment please" and placed me on hold again. 10 minutes later, he hangs up on me. Still no resolution. Do yourself a favor and go to an INOVA hospital, they employ their own physician's instead of third-party scumbags like EMA. read more

I just got off the phone (1-888-541-6368) with Emergency Medicine Associates, trying to accomplish a very simple task. That task involves a request to verify if there was any payment made to a recent bill received for my mother in law's hospital visit (Virginia Hospital). My mother in law's daughter may have paid the bill, but may have forgotten to note it down, so my mother in law wanted to make sure the bill is paid in a timely manner. So I volunteered to call and do a quick check to see if there was a payment made. I was disappointed with the call's result because I given all the information requested and when I got to the next question "Are you the patient?" and I replied honestly "No, I'm the son in law calling to check for payment...", the representative then pretty much ends my task and tells me "if you're not the patient, no information can be given due to patient's privacy unless authorization is given." I tell the representative "my mother in law does not speak English nor understand English, so how can an authorization be made?" At that point, it's basically "authorization is needed or no information is given." attitude. After I heard the most incompetent response from the representative without given any other viable alternative to confirm payment for the bill, I knew what I was going to do next: voice my dissatisfaction on Yelp. So here it is. Bam. If zero stars can be given, I'd select it. But EMA pretty much earned a 1 star for crap-tastic service. Seeing other negative reviews made on Yelp about this company, I have no doubt this company is mishandling a lot of stuff. I highly doubt patient's privacy would be an issue when I just need to confirm if a payment was made for the bill or even if the bill has an outstanding balance. This is a billing issue. It's already questionable if I already have a lot of the private information about the patient when asked about the bill, you'd think privacy doesn't matter much anymore. Obviously, this company doesn't care if it wants to get paid or give a satisfactory customer service. I have found other avenues of verifying if a payment has been made (their online website by going through the payment system) and telling the mother in law to ask the daughter to check her credit card/checking account for the exact amount found on the bill to verify (obvious verifying method, but requires mother in law to contact the busy daughter which isn't always reachable). read more

In addition to 1 out of 5 stars, it's too bad Yelp doesn't give a "Flag This Company As Potentially Corrupt." I paid my outstanding debt (of which EMA failed to notify me of before sending to a debt collector) a WHOLE YEAR AGO and while I was traveling recently, they sent it to yet another debt collector. Again, the full balance had been paid off over a year ago. These people handle the billing for Civista Medical Center. Extraordinarily unprofessional and incompetent. I went to the hospital for a work related injury, and within a week I was receiving bills daily from EMA.I faxed all the necessary paperwork 3 times, and talked to a woman on the phone who took all the info when they continued to claim they weren't receiving the papers. She said it would be handled, and I thought it was, when the DAILY bills in the mail stopped showing up. Oh boy was I in for a surprise when 4 months later they sent another (higher) bill to me with an annotation saying the account was delinquent and would be reported. I called again in an attempt to sort it out, And every person I had the misfortune of speaking too was incredibly rude and gave the same copy paste answers that don't ever solve anything. Finally spoke to someone, who took all the workers comp info AGAIN, she said it would be handled. I missed a call from her about 30min later, where she left a message with zero info, no phone number. Just said this is "Such and such from EMA. Call us back. " I called the 888 number I had for them, to speak to a man who seemed to not know of a *her name here* and said there were no annotations on my account. He put me on hold for awhile, and returned to say this woman was on the phone and she'd have to call me back. These people have zero communication skills, amongst themselves, the hospitals they do business with and the customers who are on the receiving end of their harassment. Finally got in touch with the Aforementioned woman and she said everything was taken care of. Also, I noticed that they call from a Kansas number, but when I called it back, they claimed to not have my number in the system! If that's true, how were you able to call me in the first place? Very, very shady stuff going on. Possibly illegal practices, and like others stated, makes not only themselves look bad, but the hospitals that use their services. This rating applies only to the billing department. Sent a bill for $1K+ for emergency dept visit. Primary is Medicare. Medicare wrote provider was responsible for services (patient later admitted to hospital) and EMA cannot bill patient. Medicare letter states: If patient has been billed, patient due a refund. Several phone calls, appeals, and time passes; meanwhile told I had to pay bill personally or it would go to collection. This is a dispute between insurance and EMA, not the patient. I requested a full refund of our payment but was told the current appeal could take another 45 days. It has already been 4 months... read more

Worst billing ever. Tried to bill Medicare for an ER visit and I don't have Medicare. They made up a Medicare number and Medicare rejected the claim. Even though they are a PPO on my insurance they tried to bill me over what the insurance paid. These fools are unbelievable! Initial hospital visit was November 2012. All bills go through insurance and are largely covered just as expected. Fast forward to June 2013 and I get a bill from EMA for nearly $700. Having not received an EOB from insurance I call them and eventually find out THEY BILLED THE WRONG INSURANCE COMPANY. No wonder I wasn't covered! I provide EMA the correct insurance information and they resubmit the claim in July. Unfortunately the claim gets denied because "The time frame for claim submission has expired." Basically, EMA waited far too long from the initial date of service to submit the claim. My insurance tells me that this is okay and that all EMA needs to do is submit an explanation for the delay. After telling EMA this, they agree to take care of it (we are still in July now). Since July I have been getting monthly bills from EMA for the $700 and every time I call they say I should just ignore it and they are taking care of things; there is simply no way for them to "shut off" their auto billing. Well, now it's exactly 1 year after my hospital visit to the day and I receive a COLLECTIONS NOTICE from EMA! I call them twice in two days and am both times referred to the same person, who has not responded to either their internal requests to contact me or the voicemail I've left her. Topping this all off is the fact that the customer rep I spoke to was beyond rude over the phone - I have the whole thing recorded if you'd like to hear! Multiple times she interrupts me simply to exclaim "Oh my God!!" at my more-than-warranted questions while I simply try to understand what is going on. She predictably tells me to ignore the collections notice and says she will resubmit the request, which apparently was never checked upon once in the four months it had been sitting around. She claims that EMA always obtains a patient's insurance info around the initial date of service, however this would have been impossible in this instance considering that the insurance account they billed did not exist until 2 months following the date of service. PLEEEEASE do yourself a favor and ask your hospital if they use EMA so that you can avoid the hospital and all the hassles that will come with it at all costs! ------------------------------------- EDIT 11/22/2013 I contacted Chris, below, who was able to promptly resolve this for me and provided documentation showing my $0 balance. Thank you! As has happened to many other commenters, EMA has billed me for an ER visit I never made. I only discovered it 3 years after the alleged ER visit, when it appeared as a collection item in my credit report. After months of trying to get them to resolve this, including providing written documentation from the hospital and my insurance carrier, I have yet to even get a phone call from them. I've sent another round of letters and documentation today. Maybe yet another negative Yelp post will help. read more

I was able to make monthly payments and even paid the bill of early. Thanks for responding so quickly, and i apologize it took me so long to update my review. I went to Reston Hopsital Emergency room in January where they failed to mention that they had a contract with Emergency Medical Associates. Anyway, I received a bill for $55 dollars because of the time I was seen (between 10PM-8 AM) WTF. I ignored that bill because my insurance had already explained to me that I should not be billed outside of what my insurance had already paid them. Next thing know I get a Collections letter from Client Services Incorporated stating I had 30 days to dispute the Validity of my debt or they would assume this debt was valid. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? So I called Emergency Medicine Associates were I spoke to Kathy and she immediately stated I could ignore that letter because I called them within the 30 day time frame of receiving the letter which she claims isn't from a collection agency. All this BS for nothing! They knew they were wrong charging me outside of my insurance in the first place but did it anyway! I wonder how many folks have paid them because of their threats with collections! From what I see a lot of people are unhappy with their practices! Like I said, avoid these people at all costs! I had to go to the emergency room in October 2017. In February, I receive a bill from EMA for over $1,000. This was WELL after I paid all of the other bills from my hospital stay. I have an EOB from my insurance company that says I do not owe anything to EMA. I called, I emailed my EOB, I was told everything was taken care of. Since then, I have received three more bills for the same amount, saying I haven't paid. I have called every time, spoken to the billing department, and been told my EOB hasn't been reviewed but I won't receive another bill. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THIS OFFICE?! I will be calling to speak to them for the fourth time tomorrow and I'm sick of it. What does it take to get someone to review an EOB? I used to work in medical billing and have never seen a such incompetence and continuous false information provided to a client. I'm writing the BBB tomorrow. read more

I received duplicate statements from EMA regarding the birth of my daughter and I continued to pay them. Then when the statements kept coming for exact dollar amounts I knew I had already payed, I called EMA to verify my account balance. Every time they told me my account balance was $0, yet the statements kept coming. So I called again... and again. When I received a letter from a debt collection agency shortly thereafter, I about lost it. I called EMA back to ask them to please just give me a dollar amount I owed so that I could pay and be done with this mess, but they continued to say my account balance was $0 and that they would contact the debt collection agency to let them know I no longer owed any money. I am currently waiting for them to work it out with the debt collection agency. The person from EMA that I spoke with over the phone was unable to give me a specific time frame for a call back (just "up to 2 weeks") and simply said if I hadn't heard anything I could call back and ask for "Catherine." What I need is a supervisor who can handle this immediately. All it would take is putting me on hold and putting a call out to the debt collection agency while I wait. If my credit has a negative report on it due to a measly $200 bill the I don't even actually owe, I will be so angry. The paper trail management of this company is terrible. Since patients don't really have a choice in who will bill them when they leave the hospital, I just caution those who receive statements from EMA. Check them over carefully. Don't just blindly pay your statements when they keep coming over and over for the same amounts! Make sure you are not paying multiple times for the same service because this company will absolutely take your money without hesitation even if you've already paid. read more

My daughter, a college student away at college, just received a letter from a debt collection agency on behalf of EMA. This is the first we hear of the bill. Ever! From a collection agency! After much investigating, I found out that EMA is contracted with the hospital. I had never heard of them before and at first thought it may be a scam. In addition to questionable billing practices, the ER doctor violated HIPAA privacy laws by informing me, without her consent, of her test result over the phone, although she was 18 at the time. My daughter waited for 4 1/2 hours in the ER, alone, for a consultant, only to be told that they were not available, and that she would be evaluated the following  day. Only one simple test was done. The ER bill? $1246! I called EMA as soon as I received the letter, twice, and 2 times I was given different information about how to dispute the charges. At one point, the representative said "I don't understand anything you're saying", and "why don't you just call the collection agency". read more

I was recently seen by Dr. Christopher Lemon at Carroll Hospital Center in the ER after a gallbladder surgery gone horribly wrong. He is the ONLY doctor that personally called me a few days after seeing me and actually asked how I was doing and feeling, even though he only saw me briefly in the ER and ordered and went over a CT scan with me. He took the time to talk to the surgeons on my case and get questions answered and explain what was going on to me. Great bedside manner, and a doctor who seems to genuinely care about the people he sees. Thank you. read more

After cutting my finger on October 21, 2016, I sought and received treatment at Takoma Park's Washington Adventist Hospital's emergency room. There, I was treated by EMA's Dr. Selemawit Yemane-Merriwether. Before giving me sutures, the doctor gave me a nerve block -- a shot on either side of the base of my middle finger on my left hand. As of this writing on December 19, 2016, I have yet to regain full sensation or movement in that finger. EMA has refused to give me direct contact information for the physician or to arrange a meeting so that I can have her take a look at and attempt to return the digit to its condition prior to the nerve block. I have been instructed by EMA that I should seek treatment through the Emergency Room at Adventist .... an ER visit from which EMA would profit! I find this lack of follow-up concern for a patient to be unbelievable and bordering on complete incompetence and malpractice. It is DEFINITELY a violation of basic HUMAN ethics -- if not medical ethics. At this point, I will seek treatment through my personal physician and the person to whom he refers me (if needed). I refuse to seek treatment through the self-serving mechanisms prescribed by EMA; the idea of throwing good money behind bad after the poor (initial through current) treatment would be foolish, in my opinion. Unfortunately, I see this situation being resolved through litigation. Sad, but true. read more
