I was recommended to Dr. Annie Koslow after months of physical therapy from a franchised provider had made little difference with ongoing back and leg pain from a herniated disc. From the first appointment, it was clear that Active Health Solutions is not the "one size fits all" PT that I had been accustomed to: Annie spent much of the hour having me do certain exercises and tasks to aid with a diagnosis, taking detailed notes on her laptop, and taking time to explain the anatomy and science behind the various issues that she was noticing. Within minutes, she had pointed out that certain exercises that I had been prescribed by my previous PT could actually be aggravating my injury, as opposed to improving it. She was encouraging but realistic about the time that it might take to a) get to a place where there was no pain and b) then to a place where I could resume normal activities, but set out a game plan that was personalized, was tailored to my lifestyle (which involves frequent travel) and my goals (no need to be running marathons, but wanted to be able to resume my far more modest physical hobbies). Each week, I would leave with an updated set of goals and objectives (accompanied by an email summarizing the appointment and instructions, including videos). And after a few months of weekly sessions (all from the convenience of my house), we got there, and I am pain free and back to my normal life 2 years later. However, regarding their billing.... I have had an extremely frustrating experience with NovaCare's billing department regarding a disputed medical bill. This matter is currently under review with both my insurance company and the Maryland State Attorney General's Office, and NovaCare has been informed of that multiple times. Despite this, I continue to receive repeated billing/payment notices regarding the disputed balance. I understand that billing systems can be automated, but at this point I am concerned by the continued communications despite repeated written notice that the charge is under active review and should be placed on hold pending resolution. Patients dealing with complex insurance disputes are already under significant stress. I would strongly encourage NovaCare to improve its internal communication and dispute-handling procedures so that patients are not repeatedly contacted over balances that are actively being investigated.

Unfortunately, the quality of service has declined, and it now feels as though anyone regardless of training or skill level is allowed to provide massages. Today, I arrived 10 minutes early for my appointment but wasn't seen until 15 minutes after my scheduled time. I ended up leaving the treatment room just 12 minutes into the session. The service was completely unskilled: rushed, inconsistent, lacking rhythm, and missing the foundational techniques that define a competent, professional massage therapist. A skilled therapist uses intentional pressure, consistent/proper flow, and an understanding of muscle anatomy to create a therapeutic and cohesive experience none of which were present. Realizing the session was doing more harm than good, I made the decision to end it and leave. The front desk staff clearly knew something had gone wrong, as my early departure was obviously due to dissatisfaction. Yet I was still charged $139. Not only is that unreasonable, but deeply unprofessional. When I called for clarification, I was met with a scripted cancellation-policy explanation given by the same employee who witnessed me ending the service early and leaving the studio upset. Only after pressing for details was I told I'd need to speak with a manager. The entire interaction was dismissive, confusing, and frankly, insulting. This visit brought frustration instead of the relaxation this business is supposed to offer. And for anyone who believes the service I received, particularly from Pam, is acceptable, I can assure you they have not experienced a true massage from a trained, skilled professional.
