Highway robbery- Went to have a dress hemmed and taken in at the bust and was charged $186. The work was very simple but the owner played it up like it was so much work. The owner requires a $100 deposit when you drop off your item and the place was very disorganized. It took an hour for them to pin my dress because they were working on another person as well. My dress had no embellishments whatsoever and was a simple polyester dress. 0 stars. read more

This place was a recommendation, so I took my wedding dress to Emily and was extremely disappointed with how it came out. Every time I called she asked me to call back later and when promised, she would never follow through with calling me back after finishing work. The shop is very disorganized, and Emily always made me feel like I was stressing out over nothing when I would call to check on progress and I would not get an update, would just get rushed off the schedule phone claiming the shop was too busy. Ultimately took my dress to someone else before the big day and they confirmed that the work done on the dress was not ideal, leaving very few things able to be fixed. If you read the other 1 star reviews, they are all very similar. Save yourself the stress and go somewhere else. read more

This was my first time using a tailoring service. I bought a green dress for a wedding that was too long. Emily and her team were lovely throughout the whole process. My turnaround time was about two weeks but she was able to finish both the dress and my partner's suit in less than a week, despite obviously being very busy. After going to Emily's several times in the past with happy results, I'm sad to say as of today I will not be going back. I brought in 2 pair of jeans to be patched and a fleece jacket to have the sleeves shortened for my aunt. When I dropped them off, she was quite busy and jotted down the items on a slip with no prices. I gave her a $20. deposit and on the top of the slip she wrote dep 20. After a week I was in the area and stopped in to check on things...she went through some things and found the items. She wrote on the slip some prices and said the balance was $25. She didn't give me the slip back and I was surprised at the $45. cost because she is usually very reasonable. When I got in the car I wondered if she counted the $20. deposit...anyway, went home. She's a sweet lady...However, when I got home and looked at my aunts jacket it looked the same, I had told her she didn't need to make a cuff like the one that was on there, just simply shorten five inches. So I measures the sleeve and sure enough it wasn't shortened. Things are piled about the pants were on a hanger, they were done. I like Emily, but I'm very disappointed. On further inspection, where they were supposed to shorten the sleeves 5", they shortened the the jackets bottom hem instead! Make sure if you go details are understood and written down. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. Save yourself money and getting treated badly. Emily is rude and condescending beyond words! She also overcharged me for my wedding dress and tried to do more alterations without asking me... I had to stop her in her tracks so I wouldn't have to pay even more. Her business is gross and messy. If you drop a lighted match in there, the whole place would burn down in minutes. I literally saw her throw trash on the floor. Every time you call, she tells you to call back and never knows who you are. You keep having to explain yourself each and every time you call and she still doesn't know who you are. Emily is so sweet and so capable! I came in a bit last minute to have cups put in a bridesmaid dress and have it hemmed. She also did a few other little things that made my inexpensive dress really shine. I took it home finished the next day. Emily was the first to respond to messages I left even though she's obviously very busy--in the short time that i was there for my fitting she had more than a handful of regulars pop in and leave more work for her. Prices were totally reasonable, and to be honest she got me talking about myself and my life and sent me off feeling encouraged. Too bad she's not a hairdresser, too! read more

I called with a few questions regarding an alteration I need done for my bridesmaids dress and the woman on the phone was very rude and I did not appreciate the way I was spoken to. I understand if it is busy, i have no problem holding. but when I'm being rushed and cut off everytime I speak it is not appreciated. UNPROFESSIONAL! I was referred to Emily's alterations by Alexander's boutique in Fall River. I took my wedding dress to Emily so that it could be altered for my wedding. At first, Emily appears to be so nice until I had to take my dress back to her after I realized coffee was spilled on my dress after picking it up from getting alterations done at her place. I picked my dress up on a Saturday, two weeks before my wedding; did not try my dress on until Thursday that same week as I had tried my dress at Emily Saturday morning and was to pick up Saturday evening. The only reason why I even tried my dress again was because my maid of honor told me to try it on as she had issues with the way hers was altered. If not, I had just planned to leave the dress until my wedding day. When I tried my dress on and saw the stain, I called Emily right away to make her aware and she told me to bring the dress in the coming Saturday morning early as that's when Narla will be in. That's when the true Emily came out. She kept saying the stain didn't happen at her place, she kept calling on the lord, one of her favorite quote "if god is with us, then who can be against us",  she got so loud back and forth with my maid of honor and I. Could barely get a word in as she talks over you. She offered to give me $50 dollars back on a $500 alteration! Then proceeded to telling me that she didn't have to do that, but she will just because, at that point it was never about the money,  I just wanted my dress to be fixed. My maid of honor and I told her we will be writing a review about her and calling Alexander's boutique to complain. Her response was, "you think I care? Call Alexander's, call the president for all I care", all while another two customers were in her place of business waiting. That was so unprofessional the way she dealt that day. Finally, after the back and forth she told us she will have her cleaners take care of it. Left my dress with her and was actually nervous to do so at that point. Even with all of what happened that day, I still kept my composure. My maid of honor even asked me, how can I be so calm. Called to check in on my dress 1-2 days later and Emily started again and for the first time after planning my wedding for a year, that day when I called back was the first time I felt stress and angry when Emily decided to question my character, stating she thought I was such a peaceful soul and that I brought in other elements, that I was rude because I took my dress back. Hello, of course I was going to take my dress back to you. I didn't still coffee on it. Finally, my dress was ready for pick up. All I wanted was just to pick up my dress and leave so that I would not have to deal with Emily's Alterations EVER again. Based on my experiences with Emily, the way she treated me and how sad she made me feel at a time that is suppose to be one of the happiest moments in my life; I would NEVER recommend her services to anyone! I never felt like my business was taken personal. I was just another profit for her. read more

When I first walked into Emily's alterations, Emily was super nice and positive. I needed a lot of work done to my dress because I am a size 00 and the dress was a size 2. The total amount came to $135, I literally almost fainted due to the outrageous price but I needed the work done quickly so I decided to go with it. Emily never called to let me know when my dress was done. I called her 3 days before the wedding, the day I scheduled to pick it up. She gave me a heart attack because she didn't remember at all who I was or what my dress looked like. I rushed to the store and had to help her find my dress. Thankfully, it was done and I definitely admit that she did a great job, it fit me perfectly. I told her that I would come by the next day to pick it up because it wasn't steamed yet. I was stuck at work and had my boyfriend pick it up- I gave him every little detail. Size 2 David's Bridal Plum Strapless Dress Chaffon Material. He came home WITH THE WRONG DRESS. When I realized he brought home a size 10 in my dress I freaked out because the wedding was the next day. If I am paying $135 for an alteration, I would not want my dress accidentally going to someone else's home or god forbid they spilled something on it. I had to drive 35 minutes back there when I had absolutely no time. She charged my boyfriend for the cost of the dress that didn't belong to me and I told her I would pay the difference but I am taking $5 out to compensate for gas. She was INCREDIBLY RUDE TO ME...she took off her glasses and demonically looked right into my eyes, trying to make me feel small and guilty for asking to be compensated for the gas. After fighting with me, she agreed and yelled GOD BLESS GOD BLESS, aka "f*ck you" in some freakish religious lingo. Oh and also, when I got into my car I realized the dress wasn't even steamed & pressed which was suppose to be included in the price. I had to pay to get it done elsewhere because I never wanted to be 10 ft near her again. All in all, I recommend taking your alterations elsewhere. I am sure you can find a different place for much cheaper and less of a headache. read more

I studied costume making in college and understand how difficult alterations can be. Emily does not! I stopped in to have a bridesmaid dress taken in on top and shortened. After putting it on and getting ready to get pinned, I was told that the dress was cut on an angle at the bottom and it would be difficult to shorten. It appeared to be a straight shot across, but I went with it because this was a bridesmaid dress and it needed to be done right. The top had a folded pattern to it that was very pretty. I went and picked it up a few days before the wedding, paid my $75 (CRAZY expensive) and was on my way. When i put the dress on in the shop, it seemed fine. When I put it on the day of the wedding, the top was taken in, but the top folded sections were not making it look like a baggy mess that I had to tape down. I will NEVER be returning to Emily's! read more

Yes, Emily's work can be priced higher than other places. I paid $120 for the work I had done. But the kind of work and customer service you get at Emily's is worth every penny and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Let me weave you a tale of When Something Goes Wrong, Everything Ever Will Go Wrong -- I ordered a bridesmaid's dress for a friend's wedding. The first time I received it in the wrong color. I sent it back, thinking that even though it was coming from China, they should get it to me in time. I did get it back in time and it was the right color, it was just the wrong style of dress and somehow, miraculously, two sizes too big on me. It was a week before the wedding. I wanted to die. I scrambled around for a tailor who could meet my deadline. Several of them actually laughed at me over the phone and I couldn't blame them. When I called Emily, her reaction sent my tiny heart soaring with hope: "Well, honey, you better get yourself in here, huh? You let Emily take care of you, sweetheart, no stress." I brought my dress in Friday. After looking it over and seeing what needed to be done, she told me to come in Monday morning. I came in today at 9:30, had the bodice pinned and the hem lifted, and after I left a deposit she said "by the grace of God, honey, we'll get this thing done, don't stress, sweetheart." She called me at 1PM with a finished dress. It fit me like a glove. And that's really the key about Emily: no stress. She's a little old Portuguese woman with a huge smile and a warm, easy-going disposition. She won't beat around the bush with you, but she'll never be cruel or dishonest. She and her tailors brought two inches in around the bodice, brought a two-layered hem up an inch and a half, made sure I wasn't just satisfied, but happy, before I left -- and all in under a day. I went to Emily and Nella two days before my wedding, with no notice. My dress still needed some work that the other alterations place just had not gotten right and my mother-in-law highly recommended them. They hemmed my dress an inch and a half, fixed both straps to give me some room, which entailed taking delicate flowers off my dress to re-do the straps because the other place had cut away all the extra fabric, and they added a few buttons to the back that the other places had removed. They did this all in under 2 hours. They were simply amazing, and my dress fit perfect on the first try. It was so clear they really cared to make sure the dress was everything I wanted it to be. They are kind and caring and amazing at what they do. I could not say more positive things about them! read more

The worse tailoring experience I have ever had. I brought a mother of the bride dress here to have alterations and all I got was stress. I had to make several phone calls to Emily to find out when the dress would be finished. She is so unorganized she could not locate the dress when I called, Several trips to go in and wait for her to make alterations, she popped beads on my dress and brushed it off like it was no big deal. the workmanship is sloppy and all she cares about is getting jobs, like a factory. She wants cash only for all her alterations, Sounds like a cash under the table business to me. Also ridiculous expensive. Every time I asked her what is was going to cost, she could not give me an answer. Other that the bank was down the street and I can get cash there to pay her. My advice AVOID EMILYS ALTERATIONS, unless you want stress and disappointment. I will be sure to ask Alexanders bridal shop to take her off the list. read more

If I could give her no stars I would. I went a few weeks ago to get a bridesmaids dress altered per a few friends recommendations. She came to the door and asked me when I needed it for and at that point it was 3 weeks out (I've been losing some weight and didn't want to have to make more than one trip). She starts shaking her head at me and says come on. I said can you not do it? She said come on. She goes to bring me back through a million and one dresses to get to her changing area and starts yelling be careful. I said it's fine I've got it, then she makes a snarky remark no you don't have anything. Then she's mumbling under her breath ... I don't know why you all wait ... never mind. Meaning she wasn't happy with my 3 week window. Then she opens the dressing room doorway for me to go in and put the dress on and then turns around abruptly and says actually no I'm sorry I'm not doing it, I'm too stressed and too busy, good luck, sorry. Then sent me out the door. I'm okay with her being busy, I'm also okay with her not being able to do it. I was not okay with all the unnecessary comments and her being rude. If you can't do it say so right away, none of the rest of what happened was necessary. I will never go back. Dress was done in less than a week with someone else. Professionalism and kindness goes a long way. read more

I used Emily's Alterations for a bridesmaid dress and called in April for an end of May wedding. She lectured me on the phone about how bad I was for waiting until "last minute" and that I needed to come in right this second to get it done in time. I panicked thinking I had done something wrong and that she was the only alterations place that would take me "last minute". I needed the dress taken in and cups added, along with a belt sewn in (per the brides request). I expected it to be pricey, but when I asked for estimates she would not give me one. At the fitting she made me feel small (mentally) and constantly kept reminding me how "bad" it was that I waited until "last minute" for this and that I was even lucky she took me in for this. I felt stupid after the appointment. Fast forward weeks later with the wedding a week away, I was never called with updates that it was done or anything, and when I called to get an update she was rude again and not pleasant. She told me I could come on Saturday to get the dress, so I did. I got there and she told me she was still adding together the price and then sat there looking a paper and told me "I gave you a great deal on this" and hands me an invoice for $204!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For a bridesmaid dress! I asked her how could it be this much and she snarky laughed in my face and said "don't you know I did this all by hand" and was SOOOOO mean and rude about it. I paid her and left without trying it on because I was way too angry to stay there even another second. I got home and it did fit, and the alterations were done nice, which is why I will give her 2 stars, but the treatment IS NOT WORTH IT. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. I have my own wedding coming up and although she is local and does do a nice job, I decided to go elsewhere with my wedding gown because Emily is NOT worth the stress of being belittled and over priced. read more

We had an absolute nightmare of an experience with another local shop (Ana's bridal - stay away!) and received our dresses for my brothers wedding 8 days before the big day. Emily took us in and got our dresses done, in the middle of prom season, in just about 24 hours! She stayed late to get it done and did 2 fittings with us both in the same day. I tried Emily's because it was recommend to me and it's close to where I live. But, I will never go here again. Bad service! The owner Emily is very unprofessional. How she stays in business is beyond me. Not friendly, far from courteous and lacks any sense of customer service. I had a small hem done to a dress of mine. She charged 30 dollars for a simple hem. A little expensive if you ask me, but, whatever I didn't stress about it. What did bother me is how she kept referring to me as a "little girl" She actually said "put your heels on little girl" I'm a 28 year old women, so saying that to me is HIGHLY inappropriate. I mean, I don't think she would appreciate it if I called HER an "old lady". What also bothered me is it took 3 weeks to get my dress back, which she didn't even call to tell me it was ready, I had to call her. Talk about forgetting about your customer. Finally, when I came in to try on my dress after she hemmed it, I figured I'd ask her some questions about my dress and how much she took off and if I should go shorter on the train of my dress. At this point, she pauses, and rudely says, "look, I measured you correctly." And she pulls out her ruler and starts showing me how tall my heels were from the dress, I said that's fine, I'm sure you did, all I'm saying is I have the right to know my modified measurements--taking into account I'm paying for this service. I tried to explain to her, I understood that the train of a dress is supposed to be longer then the front all I wanted to know is if I should go shorter. She simply just couldn't be bothered. Emily's is GREAT! She does a very thorough job at a reasonable price. She also works with leather, repairs or replaces zippers and her location is easy to find. I think she also offers dry cleaning but I have never had anything done there. Emily herself is also wonderful! Very caring and focused on making her customers happy in any way she can. On the recommendation of a friend and because she is very close- I called Emily to see if she could hem two pairs of pants. She was extremely friendly on the phone and told me to come in right away if I wanted to. I went in the following day on my lunch break and she did her best to accommodate me quickly and pin the pants up. She was thorough, making me walk back and forth to ensure the hem was straight. The cost was $6 each and i paid in full before leaving. She said they should be done next day. To my delight, i had a voicemail when i got out of work 4 hours later and they were done. I presented my ticket and was given my pants. Overall it was a pleasant experience and she was very friendly. To be fair regarding some other people's lower reviews, this is a tiny shop. I felt anxious about the way there were items strewn about with thin paper tickets secured with a only a pin...and there was stuff everywhere. That being said, i made sure we had a clear understanding of work being performed, turnaround time and price before leaving. I also didnt expect her to know exactly who i was and which pants were mine when I came back...she is very busy. I believe if you have reasonable expectations and hold your ticket you should have no problem. read more

Emily is fabulous! She's very contentious and really affordable. She made fairly significant alterations to my wedding dress. She took her time with me during each fitting despite being buried in work. She gently suggested an alteration that made the fit of the dress far more flattering. She was absolutely right, and I was very pleased with the quality of the results. The shop is very busy, so if you have a deadline, be sure to be up front about it. Emily will make sure to meet your deadline, but you may need to call to check in prior to returning for additional fittings. read more
