Born in 1929, he was a retired Navy Vet and businessman from Ohio when he moved to Lauderdale and decided to run for the city commission in 1973. He ran 8 times before finally winning in 1991.He served the next 13 years until 2004. The park was named in Mr. Elfers honor and he was named Lauderdale's pioneer of the year in 1996 which is an honor given to those who have contributed to the community for at least 25 years. Mr. Elfers passed away from cancer in 2016. Elfers Park contains the site of the first Lauderdale City Hall which was built by the Flair Land Company in 1959. The city used the building as City Hall until 1993 and at one time or another almost every city office was located here. Parks and Recreation was the last city department to move out in 1991. A 3,000 square foot Cultural Museum on the foot print of the City Hall was built in 2012. It was funded through the Great Neighborhoods Bond, a $35 million general obligation bond passed by voters in 2004. The Cultural Museum cost $500,000 and is LEED certified, meaning it is environmentally friendly and energy efficient. The building is a small museum housing photos and other relics of the city. It can also be used for private and city events. The site of the first City Hall was declared a historical site on May 8, 2017. On the day I visited the museum was closed even though it said it should be open. Also in the park is a fountain (not working), benches, a mosaic wall, and some small play equipment that includes a replica of town hall. The landscaping in the park is very lovely but the park itself is quite small. There isn't anything here that you need to come out of your way to see, especially with the museum closed. The park playground equipment is best suited for very young children. If you live in the neighborhood it might be a nice place to take your children to play otherwise there are much better parks nearby with far more amenities. Still it is nice that the city honored someone who did a lot for them and they did preserve some of their history.

After a quick Google search, I saw that you can rent hourly. $25 alcoholic beverage permit, $200 security deposit, and $30/hour for residents, $55/non resident. Four hour minimum for rentals and an additional $20/hour after 10pm. Food, drinks and catering are allowed.

They also have a small Friends of the library section inside the main library. Outside are a few drive up drop boxes to return books. The library was built to service the needs of the northwest area of Broward County. This library not only services Coral Springs residents but those who live in Margate, Tamarac, and Sunrise as well. The two-story Northwest Regional Library includes a 300-seat auditorium, computer technology room with over 100 computers, a teen activity room, a storytelling room in the children's section, tutoring rooms, small study rooms and conference rooms in the adult section. I have been to the Pompano Cultural Center many times. Everytime was for their monthly jazz show…read morethey put on. I think in many states this would be a premier spot for jazz, but especially in South Florida. We are short on jazz options, but not if you can make it to Pompano. It's every 2nd Thursday of the month. The fella who puts it to gether is a mainstay. He's a increible on guitar. the drums is a regular as well, very good. And they and different line ups dependign on the month and who they have that set. We have heard many different mixes. This last week when we caught the show, there was a new guy that was great on bass. There was also a fella who played sax, and really had some nice solos on clarinet. I should add before and after the show you can check out the galleries and art that's displayed there. Upstairs there are artists in residence that you can watch them at their craft as well. It's a great spot to hear music and art, all in one.

They also have many free classes for the community. Today I attended a meditation class before I did my school work.
