This community center has everything you could want for its local community. This development is fairly new, less than 5 years old and already is a great facility to the surrounding area. Been here a month and already I have met parents from Miami Lakes, Pembroke Pines, and Weston who come here specifically for their quality programs and awesome staff/coaches. This community center has all things athletics Volleyball, soccer, indoor/outdoor basketball, weightlifting, aerobics classes, karate, and a senior center full of activities to occupy your time. You need to pay in order to use the gym which technically speaking is just as competitive to pay a regular gym member at LA Fitness. All sports and activities are open to everyone not just Miramar residents. The staff is very friendly and very helpful. Any questions regarding summer camps, sports, or events everyone is very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Even the maintenance man takes pride on how clean and how great this facility is. Very much appreciated by everyone.

The building is next to the Miramar Police Station for the west side of town on SW 186 Ave., and Fire Station 100 (which fronts SW 184 Ave.), as well as very close (steps) to a church and 2 schools. A small subdivision which is part of Sunset Lakes HOA, consists of townhouses, some with garages, and you can't beat the location next door to the Shoppes of Sunset Lakes - Publix, Wells Fargo, Montessori, 7-11 gas station with carwash, fantastic vet - Dr. Schooley - nail salon, barber shop, dry cleaner, take out Chinese, Matteli's (small but great to have Italian food back in our area), large Sushi place also with very nice outdoor seating, State Farm, judo studio, and sorry cannot remember all the places there! And a fairly new (small) mini park due north of the elementary school on SW 184 Ave.(eventually we will have shade, but not in my lifetime :). NO, I am not a Realtor or agent or employee for the City of Miramar - just a homeowner since early 2001 and hope people will not only take advantage of all the Sunset Lakes Community Center has to offer, but also the general Sunset Lakes Shoppes and all that is special about our area. PS - Super Walmart 2 mi north on SW 184 Ave., and Super Target and Memorial Miramar and GINORMOUS Regional park with many sports activities, Olympic sized pool, just 2 mi east on Miramar Pkwy, etc etc PLUS great entertainment of all kinds at the Regional park. This review is specifically for the Leonard Weisinger Community Center…read more We were looking for a venue for my daughter's sweet 16 birthday party and found this reasonably priced place. For residents on the weekend the price was $75/hr. with a required $200 deposit you can get back after the event if all is well. This included round and rectangular tables and chairs. The capacity was 180 maximum. You have the option to pick between two rooms but the other room has a stage which was preferred but it was booked already. There is a different rate for nonresidents of $100/hr on weekends I believe. There is an orange panel that runs along the wall making it a bit difficult to mask in decoration but we managed to do so with long length table cloths and backdrops. There are bathrooms with multiple stalls for use but there is not a place to get dressed other than the bathroom. We were unable to return home due to setup cutting close to the start time of the party but we made the bathroom work and it was clean. There is also a full setup kitchen with ice. I don't believe you are able to cook in it but you can keep items warm. There are multiple entries to the room and venue. The parking was limited but we made it work. I was unable to get after setup video or pics of it without the party going on but I was able to find pictures and video on Instagram. The staff was very accommodating allowing us to view the venue before booking and access before the party to determine how we could setup. We were given more than enough tables and chairs. I was able to receive the dimensions of the room to help plan setup. Overall, this venue was a great choice for our budget and we really enjoyed the party. After cleaning we were able to receive our full deposit. If you're looking for a budget friendly place and live in the area this is a great option.

I go to a lot of events here. It's always a nice time. Never any problems. Good neighborhood. The Pompano Beach Toy Con was a lot of fun. Lots of cool things to see like vintage Star Wars, vintage records, Pokémon items, Japanese snacks, Handmade jewelry, and different types of art and so much more too numerous to name them all. Also People dressed in costumes is always fun taking pictures with the kids. We will definitely go next year.

But it was renamed in honor of Emma Lou, the late mayor and long time commissioner of Pompano Beach. There are meetings and banquet rooms here as well as classrooms, halls, and even a dance studio. A variety of programs are offered here as well as lessons. Sports and exercise classes including pickle ball, karate, Zumba, et al. Unfortunately, they no longer hold the granny's attic that I had a selling table at for several years. This was one of my favorite events as there aren't many inside yard sales. But check out the current events and classes -- there's something for everyone.

MiMo refers to the architecture style Mid-century modern. Started in Germany after WWII, it is a style that was popular from the mid-1930s to mid-1960s. The hallmarks of the design are simplicity and functionality. Expect to see sleek lines, little ornamentation, gentle organic curves, and mixed materials. Mid Century Modern is considered Broward's signature architecture. The Time Square shopping plaza was designed by architect Charles McKirahan in 1954 and built in 1957. McKirahan was one of the most noted mid-20th-century architects in Fort Lauderdale. He married his architect school girlfriend and together they founded a firm with more than 100 architects which they expanded internationally. McKirahan's architectural studio was located in the shopping center. He is responsible for the stunning A-frame of the the original Mai-Kai. For this plaza his design elements included screen block walls, geometric forms and glazed curtain walls. Sadly he passed away at the young age of 44 in a car accident. His son Charles "Chuck" McKirahan followed in his parents footprints and also became a celebrated architect. While the Ft. Lauderdale historical society did a great job of preserving the pioneer history of Ft. Lauderdale along the New River, this shopping center did not receive the same treatment from the Historic Preservation Board. It was renovated in 2019. The most prominent building on U.S. 1, a curved building with red brick screen wall, had the defining wall removed and replaced with sliding glass doors. Today you can still see some of the MiMo design elements McKirahan added but it is looking a little run down. The plaza has a furniture store, Times Square Pizza, and Smarty Pants, a bar to name a few of the businesses. If you are a local you have probably passed this plaza a thousand times without a second glance on your way to the beach. True fans of architecture and history know however that is worth a second glance.

The 1969 Stonewall Uprising in NYC was a series of spontaneous, violent protests by LGBTQ+ people…read moreagainst a police raid at the Stonewall Inn, in Greenwich Village. It sparked activism and ignited the the modern gay rights movement in the United States. One of the results of the new call to activism was the founding of the Stonewall National Museum and Archives in 1973 by Mark N. Silber. In 2009 the current location opened next to Holiday Park on Sunrise Boulevard in a former Broward County Library branch. Admission is free. The John C. Graves Library contains material on LGBTQ+ topics. There are also two small exhibition areas, the Ross Gallery and Hester Gallery with changing exhibitions. One of the exhibits I saw was Amazon Rising: The Legacy of Wonder Woman presented by the Stonewall National Women's Fund with items from the Harriet Leyden Collection. Items chronicle Wonder Woman's comic book debut in 1941to her modern era. It is on display until February 17th along with Will You Wear My Pin? The Wearable History of Our Community. This is one of the largest LGBTQ lending libraries with 29,000 plus volumes and more than 6 million pages in the archives. Material are free to view but checking out requires a membership which costs $50. There are also rotating exhibits, panel discussions, films, and author presentations. A visit to the Stonewall National Museum and Archives can be combined with Art Serve next door which also has a free exhibit gallery.

The Hollywood Historical Society is a non profit organization, founded in 1974 for the purpose of…read morecollecting, preserving, and educating the public about the history of Hollywood, Florida. They are located in the historic Hammerstein House on Polk Street where they operate a research center that has over 20,000 pieces in it's collection. There is a small store at the research center that sells photos, postcards, and books. They also give free tours of the Hammerstein House on first Sunday of the month, October through May, from 1:00-4:00 PM. On the events page of their website you can see the dates for their lecture series as well as an upcoming lunch on January 19th at the Tropical Acres Steak House. Also on their website is a great printable tour map that gives you a self guided walking tour of historic places along the beach and in the downtown. I love what the historical society is doing to preserve the history in Hollywood. It is always fun to discover on of the plaques they have installed on a building and read about the history of the place. You can support the historical society by becoming a member, making a donation, or serving as a docent at the Hammerstein House.

This is a wonderful organization that's mission is preserving and protecting Hollywood's history. The headquarters is located a short walk from my home on the Southside of the golf course, on Polk street in the historic district of Hollywood Lakes. The Hammerstein House was donated to the City by the Hammerstein's who have a great love for this city as well as no children to pass the property down to. The Historic Society rents the property on a 99 year lease for $1. per year. There is free tours given of the home first Sunday of the month from October through May. The historic details are magnificent such as the Cuban tile that is original to the home as well as the grand archways. The kitchen has cabinets that reach up to the top of the ceiling and it really lent itself as a place for entertaining. The grounds have beautiful greenery and lush trees. As a past President I had my own home featured on the Annual Historic Home Tour. That year we featured the homes of Northlake which also included the Hollywood Women's Club that is located around the corner from my home across from the Hollywood Beach Resort and Country Club. I highly recommend you stopping by the home for a tour as well as learn more about the City of Hollywood's fascinating history as well as former residents that called Hollywood their home.
