    Spinach empanada
    Carson C.

Union was super cute with very friendly and fast service. I got the sweet potato and spinach + cheese empanadas. The spinach one was superb, whereas the sweet potatoes texture was off and included maybe pineapple?? My mother got the Bifana which was okay. It seemed like an American version of a Bifana which was weird given we are in Portugal. I would visit again if needing food to go for a picnic or event. Note is does take about 15 for every order as it's made fresh which we really appreciated.

As soon as we landed in Lisboa we hit the streets to explore. We were walking up a small side street when we hear Ola! We looked over and there was this woman with a big bright smile looking out of an opening. Right outside in front of her were several small stools. She was selling some sort of beverages as Cuban music filled the air. She kind of caught us off guard and we walked on for a bit and then we stopped and turned back around to see what she had to offer. She was selling Ginja, the local liquor and we'll as some other liquors. While drinking several of the different liquors she told us she was originally from Uruguay. We spent a bit of time there and she gave us some pointers on where to go and what to do. Her name is Ximena and I have to tell you that meeting her was one of the highlights of our trip. Union has a bigger location down the street with a beautiful interior and big windows you can sit at and watch the world go by. On our last night in Lisboa we had to stop by and say goodbye to her. There was a couple from Germany there and we all talked for a bit. She was playing some kind of German music they were talking to her about. If you happen to be in Lisboa you must stop for a bit and talk to Ximena and enjoy some Ginja and an emapada. You will not regret it and let her know that Veronica says Ola!

The fresh juices here are absolutely delicious. Another review remarked about the time things took - it takes time because everything is made fresh and not just popped under a heat lamp. Very cute spot with seats to watch as people stroll on the street right outside.

The codfish dumpling fusion was a pleasant surprise, creamy on the inside and a nice chewy gyoza wrapper. The octopus rice was good too. A decent amount of octopus with rice in a smoked bell pepper sauce. I was disappointed by the seafood pasta soup though. I liked the mussels, but the shrimp and the clams weren't the freshest. The clams were a little mushy. It had a nice seafood stock flavor, but definitely could have used more salt and seasoning. We had mixed service from one of the female servers.

We started with a glass of wine and a specialty cocktail with gin and cherry liqueur as a base. Perfect balance of herbal and tart and sweet. We shared the amberjack ceviche which was fresh and bright and then the rich & creamy prawn risotto. All beautifully executed. We each ordered a glass of 20 year port to celebrate my birthday and the staff overheard and brought a complimentary rich chocolate dessert. Very enjoyable meal all the way around.

It's rotisserie chicken doused with a spicy hot sauce so what's not to like? I knew it was a Portuguese-originated dish, so I looked for a place famous for it. Here on a Sunday evening, there was quite a queue extending up the cobblestone alley, so I realized this must be the place. Although it was at least thirty people deep, it didn't take more than twenty minutes for Jamie W and me to secure a table upstairs. It was a homestyle dining room set-up that hovered between cozy and crowded depending on the fluctuating volume level. Interestingly all the servers were male, and while ours was the most junior, he consciously followed the behavior of his veteran brethren. There was no question about our main course, the 13,5€ Frango Assado No Espeto (Roast Chicken on the Spit) (Photo 7). It was tender and succulent enough albeit a bit under seasoned, all the more reason to pour a liberal dose of the piri piri sauce (Photo 8). Our sides were simple but shareable, the 3,2€ Batata Fritta (French Fries) (Photo 9) and the 4,3€ Salada Mista (Mixed Salad) (Photo 10). Both were fine, though we really wanted to try their Cream Spinach. They were already out of it in the kitchen. We were quite satisfied nonetheless, and their service pretty much worked like clockwork. Jamie and I agreed we'd definitely come back if the passion for poultry strikes us on a return trip to Lisbon. In the meanwhile, I'll just do a run to Costco, buy a rotisserie chicken, and dream of Portugal. A small line of one or two groups at a time formed throughout the night. We were seated outside and there was a street performer with an acoustic guitar - def added some great vibes to the night. It was a chilly December night but the heater provided *just enough* warmth. We ordered the codfish cakes which were alright - nothing too special. Since it was a little cold out, I also ordered the chicken broth. It was bland, but good in its own way. There was some rice and chicken bits in it that tasted really good. The rotisserie chicken that they are known for was EXTREMELY salty. We were a group of 6 and ordered 2.5 rotisserie chicken (so 5 pieces) but this was actually way too much. It's a little better (but still salty) if you don't eat the skin, but that's the best part given how crispy it was! I tried to drown out the saltiness by using the piri piri sauce and it helped a little bit... but biting into the chicken meant biting into the undissolved salt bits. Given how salty it was, we could not finish it at all and left behind 3 pieces. Service itself was meh. They made sure to inform us that the tip was not included in the bill.

He will talk to you for hours and teach you about food and wine and culture and talk about the history of food and how it came to be in Portugal. I loved it. I learned so much. I aspire, as an American, to learn from and look up to other cultures. I feel very honored to have dined in a restaurant managed by him on our trip to Portugal. I'm going to recommend to our travel coordinator to add this restaurant to the Google map recommendations list because more people need to go to this place - they need more tables, more space, because I'm convinced this is such a hidden gem that should be exposed to the masses to enjoy! We visited several wineries and this restaurant had the best wine - bar none! The fish, a fish I hadn't tried before, was deliciously seasoned, falls apart with the fork, the creamy rice was just divine. I normally will never eat little cherry/grape tomatoes - ever - but the perfect bite of fish, creamy rice, and a tomato was... perfection. The menu is deeply curated; flavors - textures - wines that make sense. You can tell Frederico what you normally like and he 100% knows what wines he has that you will love. The tomato, orange, ham, salad, was absolutely balanced and delicious. I'm so grateful that our first trip to Portugal we got to meet Frederico and dine with these wonderful people who love food and wine as much as us. I'll never forget it as long as I live. You will not be disappointed. Promise.

It was not crowded at all on a Friday night, and I was able to strike up a conversation with fellow diners and actually hear myself talk. That is rare these days. I was surprised they were offering Happy Hour pricing around 7 PM, so I quickly took advantage of a pitcher of sangria, which was delicious and incredibly fresh. I started with the chorizo, which you cook yourself right at the table. For my main course I ordered the steak with eggs, and it was excellent. To finish, I had the crème brûlée for dessert, and it was also outstanding. Overall, a truly wonderful hidden gem in Lisbon. I cannot wait to return.
