I was just getting on an exit ramp to get onto 395 and a red DC Empire Cab passenger car just came flying in reverse towards me! My boyfriend was in his truck behind me and we both had to swerve out out of the way as this reckless driver came towards us! He nearly slammed into me, but luckily I honked my horn. The driver then rolled down his window and said that the reason he had reversed about a quarter mile off of the ramp was because there was traffic, as if he did nothing wrong. Update: I received a letter from the dc taxi cab commission stating that they had a hearing, the driver appeared, and he was fined. I framed the letter. I did change my stance on uber and now use them regularly instead of taxis. Uber is great. read more

I am new to the area. But that shouldn't be an excuse for terrible service. Took a cab on 03/05/2015 when it was snowing, only needed to go 0.5 mile but my girlfriend was cold. So ok... ha I got in, the driver says "the rates are double, are you ok with that?" I said sure, we're not going far. We get to the apartment and I'm shocked to find I owe $22? For a trip that we went 0.5 mile and took less than 3-4 minutes usually costs $5-6 tops. Come to find out that there is a $15 up charge when it snows. Of course he fails to mention that part. Hey! So if you hail this cab from the street, and then leave your cell phone in it, don't worry! No phone number that exists for Empire Cab will actually lead you to any kind of response or a human being, so your phone is safe in the back of the cab until someone finds it, and maybe, if you're lucky, decides to call you back. If you DON'T leave your phone in the cab, the driver will be super attentive to your directions. So attentive that he'll almost pass all the streets that you ask him to turn on until you yell "TURN HERE" 5 or 6 times before it finally hits home and he jerks the car in whatever direction you indicate, but DON'T WORRY, he's just trying to keep you on your toes. I was another driver in a car directly behind this driver waiting in the DC Inspections line on Half St. I was asked to move to another lane by an inspections worker. I motioned the cab driver to move up in order to prevent hitting his car. He had at least 3 feet of space to move. The driver ignored me in a "power trip" fashion and simply stayed there for several minutes until he deemed it necessary to move. I contacted the cab company by calling the number listed to complain about the driver's actions. I spoke to a gentleman named Malik who was very kind. I told him that I simply wanted an apology from the driver. He said he would pass along my complaint to the owner. Roughly one hour later, I received a restricted call from a man claiming that he was the owner of Empire Cab. He was extremely rude defending his driver and barely allowing me to explain the circumstances. I told him I would have been fine with an apology and that his driver was not doing a great job representing his company. When he continued to be improper himself I told him that I would contact the taxi commission. He told me that it didn't matter since his driver didn't say anything to me. Actions speak louder than words. This driver did not care that he was in a marked vehicle representing his employer. Quite frankly, it is no wonder that he has this type of attitude since it is apparent that this owner is similar. This company and and its employee unfortunately represents DC as well. read more

Empire cab #325 picked us up in Washington, on U street, at approximately 945 pm on 10/4/2013. He took us to the Marriott Residence on North Quincy in Arlington. We wanted to drop two (of the four people ) at the hotel and continue on to drop the remaining two about three blocks further. Once at the hotel, he refused to continue and got out of the cab to eject the other people, informing them that they ' could walk that three blocks'. This man was rude, did not fulfill his contract and has left a black mark on the Empire cab company. I do not know his problem. He took this action unilaterally and was completely unprovoked. The cab company owes me $25 and this man needs to be either trained or terminated. He does not positively represent this city, nor his company. read more

Please inform cab #28 to use his blinker. On Van Dorn street he was in the lanes for 495, then crossed all lanes of traffic, cutting me off, in order to get to Eisenhower. This would have been fine, but he didn't even touch the blinker. read more

I left my phone in a cab yesterday 2/23/16. The cab number is Empire 181F392. The cab company gave me the driver's phone number but he is refusing to pick up calls or return my calls, despite multiple voicemails. I even sent messages to my phone to communicate my contact information. Even though my phone is locked, the screen would still allow someone to read the messages. The driver clearly has the phone because it's been roaming the city and the phone has been turned off and on. I would caution anyone using this company as it appears the company refuses to assist and the driver is in possession of a phone that is not his. This is the worst cab service I have ever taken. The company themselves are refusing to help further. read more

I wish it was possible to give no stars at all. I had my worst experience with a cab driver from Empire. I've had my fair share of rude, overpriced cab drivers, but this one was by far the worst. not only did he charge us extra, he got lost and still demanded tip. I only had a 20 for the 11 dollar (which was still too much) fare, and asked him to give me change, and refused to give me change. Cabs are about convenience and it usually doesn't matter what company the cabs come from, but I highly highly recommend never to use this company if you're stuck in the middle or nowhere or need a lift somewhere close. read more

Just had the most abominable experience taking an Empire Cab late at night from Gallery Place/China Town area to Petworth. The cab driver started by stopping in the middle of the road instead of pulling over to pick me up. He was an incredibly rude older, african american man who would not answer my questions until I asked him twice if he was familiar with the intersection I was directing him to. Awful cab service, but what cab service is good in D.C!? Not acceptable. Warning people to not use this cab service, ever. read more

A cab driver for empire cabs, cab number 353, illegally denied me service by asking where I was going before unlocking the cab doors by national's stadium. I understand it was late at night after a game, but taking me home to an area full of bars and people with cash to spare is not a huge inconvenience when it's your job! not to mention, um, illegal? anyway, lost about 20 points in my book. read more

Terrrible experience. I'm from Colorado and was in DC. I got into a Empire Cab #217 and knew it was only 7.7 miles to my destination in Falls Church. The driver too me all the way to Tyson's Corner even though I kept telling him his was going the wrong direction! My 7.7 mile ride was 19 miles! The fare should have been about $20 but he charged me $46! I refused to pay that much, but still ended up paying $30 for a $20 ride! UGH, never get in a cab that doesn't have a Garmin or GPS system on the dash! read more

These people are very rude when you call them. On the first call, the person on the phone blurted out a number then hung up. On the second call, I asked for a Manager and was told by the same person that he was the Mnager and that I was wrong about his rudeness. He told me that his drivers are independent and that I was to call 202-544-1212, which turned out to be "Yellow Cab". YC was not rude and told me they were not affliated with Empire Cab then proceeded to provide prices and appointment information. On the third call (to Empire), I asked him why did he send me to "Yellow Cab" as he (the same person had answered) had told me that they were the company that scheduled the taxis. I repeated what "Yellow Cab" told me and that they "Empire" were not affiliates or associates so I wanted to know why he would not set up a scheduled pick up. He said well I am the Manager, I am not rude, but you call 544-1212 and they will pick you up. The whole experience was frustrating because why would they deny making money? There is a total of 5 of us that need to be transported to a training/luncheon event from two locations so they would have made money---- never got to tell him any of that because of his short, harsh convos to pretty much tell me not to bother him and to go to another company. Therefore, I would not recommend this company to anyone who needs to attend professional events. read more
