To anyone out there thinking of buying flooring from these people buyer beware. September 2024 we purchased laminate flooring for our dining room. We told the salesman that we needed something that would stand up to our dining room chairs that have plastic rollers on them. The flooring he sold us he assured us would do the job. At about a year the laminate has begun to wear away due to normal use. When I called to report this. They initially said it should be covered by warranty. They then called to tell me it would not be covered because the flooring was not made to have chairs with rollers on it. When asked why did the salesman lie to us about their flooring. Their response was not their problem. So find a company that is willing to stand behind their product, and have them put it in writing. We will be replacing more flooring next year, but will never use Empire again. read more

**Update** They responded to this review 5 days ago saying they would reach out to me, yet have not. Tells you all you need to know about their customer service. A dishonest and ethically challenged company. Do not waste your money on this inept company. For LVP flooring, the only attractive colors are the thinnest and cheapest planks available. The higher quality products are only available in grey colors. Installation process and cost were ok, but its hit and miss with the contractors they use for installation and warranty repair. Between the 4 or 5 visits it took them to finish installing about 400 sq ft of LVP planks, only one of the contractors were highly skilled. We had an installation issue where the floor wasn't leveled properly leading to a significant low spot in a high traffic area that caused a plank to keep chipping at a seam. I guess we purchased some thinner planks since the thicker grey colors were not an option we wanted. The installation guy made sure to tell us several times it was a thin and easily damaged grade of flooring. They came out fairly quickly and replaced the chipped plank, but didn't address the low spot, so it chipped again within a week or so. Installation then kept telling us it was a warranty issue, and warranty kept telling us it was an installation issue, so it took multiple calls and canceled appointments over the course of about 2 months to get them back out to properly correct the issue. I was actually told by the warranty representative that it'd be easier to lie and make up a story that we accidentally damaged the floor by dropping something on it to get the issue resolved. That's what I did and managed to get an appointment scheduled within a few days. I then had to personally make sure the contractor corrected the low spot when they replaced the plank. I'm guessing the installation department was trying to prevent a "recall situation" to avoid dinging some key metric in order to maintain bonus or commission. Just recently we dropped a dog bowl on the floor causing a 1" gouge to one of the planks. I called and spoke to a warranty rep to see if this was covered under the accidental damage warranty. Three days later they let me know that the claim was denied because "throwing an item" is not covered. The notes from my call apparently stated I said "a dog dodge ball was thrown at the floor". I don't even understand what a dog dodge ball is! Either they are dishonest and changed my statement to make sure the claim was denied, or they are so inept they can't even properly document what a customer says. I'm not even that upset they denied the claim, we did cause the damage and it isnt that big of a mark. I'm just blown away by the ineptitude and dishonesty of this company. They may be affordable when compared to other flooring companies in the area, but you get what you pay for. Save yourself the hassle and try someone else. read more

Not a big fan of sales organizations that don't have a store front. Not a big fan of anyone requiring an in-home visit to learn what products they sell, what their prices are, etc. But we decided to give them a chance. We see their advertising so often, they must be doing something correct? Right? The salesperson arrived late, but they did call 15 minutes before the last of the time window they were supposed to arrive, but I really didn't mind too much. It was end of day, and a small delay didn't really matter that much. Before we could talk about their products, I was required to sit and watch a commercial about their services which didn't really talk much about what they did, but just hype about the company. As someone who works in advertising, this was more gimmick than informative. It made me less interested from the start. We were very upfront with the salesperson that we wanted to know what products they offered and what they would charge, but given they refused to do it any other way than to "invite" them to our homes, we are playing by their rules. We WOULD NOT BE making a purchase that day, but we were going to be making a purchase in the next week or two after we talk to at least one more option and weigh our choices. His response was immediately that his pricing varied, if we wanted to buy later, the price would be higher. If we bought today, it would be cheaper. And I pointed out that his costs were the same, but if we had to pay more to give careful consideration, I would consider that money well spent, reiterating WE WOULD NOT BE making a purchase that day. After he took measurements, we went through carpet samples. What makes this company odd from everyone else, is that they don't quote prices by the foot or yard, they won't even tell you how many feet they are quoting, they just give you a price. They don't tell you what brand of carpet they are selling, they only label it as their own private label, so you must ask. When I initially asked what brands they sell, he listed several that were familiar, but after reviewing the samples, we didn't see any of the name brands he said they sold. After the first round of pricing, he didn't even bother quoting, he then gave us his "special pricing" in a second round of pricing, which was more in line with what one would expect given what we have already been quoted by other flooring companies. Still high, but closer to the mark. Already trying to up sell an additional insurance policy for the carpet, in addition to the "sale price". It's an interesting concept, but shouldn't you make the sale before adding more sales on? At which point I said thank you, we will consider it. And at this point, my wife and I both were considering it. Even interested. Then he pulled the, "let me call my boss" and see if I can do any better. And of course, the boss got on a speaker call with us to do the hard sell of "buy now for this really low ( ok.. about the same as everyone else ) price". If you wait, you won't get this pricing. The value of my dollar remains the same today and tomorrow, if I have to buy right now, the price for tomorrow must be an over charge. It reminded me of a bad used car salesman, it reminded my wife of a horrible time share presentation we attended. We're both correct in our observations. Another note about this visit, they give you nothing in writing unless you make a purchase, and I'm not even sure if they would then. I guess that's why the salesperson had his cell phone in his pocket pointed out and recording the entire time. It makes sense, that way no one can claim the salesperson promised something he didn't... But it felt creepy having someone recording you in your own home. read more

I got carpet installed on the 17th of august in my bedroom. The salesperson was the only trouble that I had. He was very pushy and complained about driving to Lawrence from Kansas City. He tried to rush me through the carpet samples and said "The thing that irritates me about driving out of town and making a sales is that the customer never comes through with the purchase; are you serious about this sale?" I asked him " are you a selling cars or selling carpet?" The installer was prompt and on time. He was very polite and professional. He came in and did his job, clean't up his mess, and left! He worked solo and it didn't take him long at all! He was willing to help me move all the furniture back in the room, but I declined his help because I about to get ready for work. He was very willing to help and he was ready when he arrived to move everything out of the room, but I had it done already! Then the Manager came behind him and inspected the job! I had no idea that someone was going to come to make sure I was satisfied and inspect the work; I like that! I would recommend them if you need carpet installed! Approximately six months later, visible indentations from nails underneath are visible. In the light, you can see bumps and indents from furniture legs. Despite spending thousands of dollars, the flooring is cheap and fragile. Many are reviewing about the service, but the product itself is absolutely inferior and low grade! read more

Never again. Despite the rude and insulting treatment we received, the company only had excuses for a poor installation. For nearly a year we tried to get them to come by and check the washboard feel after installation. Someone would stop by, look and then tell us that the warping feel was within industry standards. My neighbor does commercial installations and said it was poorly done and needs to be removed and reinstalled properly. When I mentioned that to the manager he said he didn't care what his competition has to say. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY! DON'T do it! I very selectively decide to write reviews but this was a bad enough experience that I want to warn others. Every step of this experience was terrible from the initial quote to final billing. A salesperson came to take our initial request for blinds. We placed an order and paid a 50% deposit. The salesperson went M.I.A. and we heard nothing about installation for MONTHS. When we called to get an update, the salesperson admitted that our order was forgotten. Once the order was actually placed, the blinds arrived quickly and were installed in a reasonable amount of time. Then came billing. We had made minor changes to our initial order when calling the salesperson back. He made the changes, which included removing some blinds and adding others. When it came time for installation we supposedly still owed twice as much as our initial money down (which we were told was 50%). After calling the salesperson, he admittedly made a mistake in our pricing and we were told we would receive an updated invoice clearly accounting for the change in price. This invoice never arrived. Nearly six months later, we were sent a "Final Notice" from Empire. The notice claimed we still owed the initial incorrect amount. In addition, the notice claimed we received three prior letters (which we hadn't). When asked to see documentation of this they provided us a contract we had never seen with "Signature On File" in place of our signature. After continuing to argue with the company about price, and them continuing to be able to provide an itemized invoice, we were sent to collections. My advice -- go somewhere else (try Costco - we got one additional blind for a much cheaper price from them and it was super easy and a lot quicker. The savings will more than cover your membership costs if you don't already have one.). If you do use them, make sure you get an ITEMIZED QUOTE AND INVOICE for each step of the way. read more

Buyer Beware! I purchased engineered wood floors for my home about a year ago. My first issue came up in a very short period of time. The planks started to separate in several places. I reached out to them for repairs and they didn't show up for the appointment I was given on the phone. I called back and they claimed they had no record of my service request. They managed to schedule service from the installer who informed me that the installation instructions for the product changed since my installation. The product was designed to be glued down, and they were having issues, so the installers were told to nail it down in new installations. They made the repairs needed at that time. Now about a year since the installation, I called for service for the same issue. I was told I would get a call back within 3 business days. That was 3 weeks ago. Despite my wife and I calling for service 5 times over the 3 weeks, we have not received a single call back and no service has been scheduled. We contracted with Empire Today at their Kansas City, KS, location and have been very satisfied with their sales presentation(s), their product, and their installation. Our sales consultant came back to our home twice to present us with product as we changed our minds about what we wanted, provided us with good advice, and actually dropped by on the day of installation to make sure all was going well. The installers did an incredible job of tearing out old carpet and laminate and laying over 800 sq ft of engineered wood flooring in one day. I said no, the rep made some other suggestions such as laminate with a slightly lower price, and finally left. I had someone come out to bid carpet for my entire house and boy was I sorry I did... The person who came to my home had just smoked a cigarette prior to coming in, so they smelled awful, and it just went south from there. I explained we are moving and just want to replace the carpet to a minimum builder grade before we go. She measured everywhere, then sat down to work up the estimate. While she was working the numbers, she asked me when we wanted to install. I said we were shooting for ASAP, but I was waiting for the bids to come in. As soon as I said that, the appointment went AWFUL. She first mentioned that they price match, but I don't have the other bids in detailed writing - one was a call back after they measured, another was written on a business card. She also asked what the lowest bid was, and when I told her I was still waiting on one more, she instantly turned from polite to rude. Her response: "Oh. So you aren't ready to book right now?" I said no, because I wanted to see the other bid. She said their pricing is drastically different if you don't book during your appointment because "we simply have too many appointments and no enough sales reps to come back to schedule your install." From there, I said ok, just tell me the estimate. It was insanely high! Roughly $4.00/sqft installed (with removal of old carpet) for the crappiest carpet they have. I asked about their 75% off sale advertised on their website, and she said that was for their most expensive carpet and even with 75% off material, it would be much more expensive than the basic carpet that wasn't on sale. When she finally gave me bids and I told her it was more than double our other bids, she pointed out our other bids weren't real bids because they weren't written out. I said I just don't think we're going to use Empire at all, and she said 'OK' snatched up all her samples and her bag and walked out of my house without another single word. We ultimately ended up going with a different company who was less than half the price ($1.95/sqft) and got significantly better quality carpet installed 1 week after my encounter with the Empire rep. My experience was absolutely terrible with this company, it starts with the sales representative who lies to you and tells you everything you want to hear. So I purchased carpet through these folks and they were supposed to install the carpet on 12/27. Needless to say I took off work to get stood up because they never showed up. After sitting at the house for 2 hours they finally called to tell me they weren't coming. So the second try to install carpet was on 12/29. This time the installers showed up and started tearing up my old carpet and pad, then called me back to the house after 3 hours. I get back to the house to find the carpet in my driveway with a big cut in the carpet and the installers telling me they can't put it in because of the damage to supposedly new carpet. So after a week long of waiting they finally brought in new carpet to install. 3 times a charm to get simple carpet installed in my house. My experience with this company was just atrocious and there customer service was terrible. They promised me a $100 dollar refund for my trouble and go figure I haven't gotten it yet. Between the miscommunication of the store manager and his team, they have already been to our house 5 times and the job isn't complete yet. All we're doing is putting laminate in our 300 sq ft basement...They were supposed to come out yesterday and finish the job and they never showed up. They are incompetent and have a bunch of excuses instead of any solutions every time I call them. The worst part is they make you pay 100% up front before they start the job so they have all of their money already and are in no hurry to finish the job for us. Our home repair company picked them. We would never use them. They didn't order the carpet or vinyl until 6 weeks after we picked it out. So they had to delay our move in by a week because we needed carpet to do so and they couldn't install as quickly as they could have. We ended up with two dates, one for carpet and one for vinyl as a result. The carpet was very late but went in fine. They require someone to confirm the date of installation or they don't show. So they didn't show up the first scheduled time for vinyl because their confirmation didn't happen. So we got a new date for vinyl. They just didn't show up then and took calling them to find this out. We got a third date. They finally showed at 12:30pm with a team of three workers. Should be more than enough time for a 10x5 floor. Most of the time two of the guys stood around. They spent three hours and had to return the next day to wait on cement to cure. The next day one worker showed up at 12:30 when he was expected 10-11 and brought the wrong kind of threshold. Had to go get a new one. In total it took 5 hours to install a 50 square foot floor. That's an hour per 5 square feet of work. Think about that. read more

The past 4 weeks has been utter hell dealing with Empire and their contractors. They do not have in house installers. Our installer got half way done then noticed the carpet was not only stained but degraded and was falling apart. He suggested to call empire and set up an appointment for an inspector to get new carpet. We called Empire and they said they would just replace the carpet and to not worry about an inspector. A week later on our new install date (they called the day before to confirm) We got no show, no call. When calling that afternoon they could not get in touch with the installer, then said that this was made in error and they needed to schedule an inspector. We did that for 2 days later. Again no show no call. We asked for compensation which they confirmed with me on the phone they logged but never did. They also said to again not worry about the inspector and they would get another install appointment out the following week because they had to order the new carpet. I asked if they still had my compensation arrangement on file and they did not. We asked to cancel it and get a full refund. They confirmed that it was closed and we would get a full refund and we would get a call back next day about when they would come pick up the carpet. No call. I called back the following day and they said the account was not closed out and we had an active install going. I was put on hold for 30 min and the line dropped. I am going to be calling my bank and claim the charge is fraudulent. They have one week to come get the carpet before the other company we're going with installs new carpet and I am going to be throwing it away. Terrible management, terrible service. Terrible carpet installation. They installed the wrong carpet after we had discussion about which carpet was to be installed. The installer confirmed it was the wrong carpet and finished the install. They gouged a hole in my trim then used paint we out to try to hide it. Then I was told they won't redo it unless I buy more carpet. I spoke to upper management who was very rude! The long hair, bearded guy who showed up to do my 2-room install pulled up in a circa 1970s panel van. Hauled the very heavy and cumbersome carpet through my home, gashing up the newly applied paint throughout my hallways. When I brought it to the attention of Empire Corporate to seek reimbursement for the damage, I was met with excuses, insurance bureaucracy and patronizing grade school BS. There needs to be a zero star rating here. Unbelievably horrible experience. The installers came Monday, worked for three hours, they only spoke Spanish and tried to say something about our paint in the basement, installation manager said they were causing damage because of a water based paint we have in the basement (that's a new one, no sense at all), he said they didn't feel comfortable continuing due to damage that was already done and could be more. They got all of their stuff and LEFT!!!!! It was a failed installation. We are out almost $1900 cash, no carpet, they left trash all over the basement, nails, damage to walls/drywall/baseboards. Even damage going down the stairs!! To make this even worse the sales manager (Linda) took our situation, reviewed it, and then told us yesterday they left because they didn't feel comfortable in our hostile environment and felt threatened by me! I don't even speak Spanish, had no way to communicate with them anyway. Bottom line, Empire is backing the installers' story of I guess saying they left because I was hostile!? I was home with the kids and didn't even talk with them till they clearly were having a problem three hours into it. They are giving us a full refund but it takes 10-15 days to get in by mail. My husband documented all of the damage, emailed it to the manager, and they said we are at fault. We have no carpet and now damage my husband has to take care of. My husband did call customer service yesterday and filed a formal complaint with the company. I'm just sad and feel ignored. Empire has moved on, ignoring that these guys originally were messing up, admitted that, now made up stories about me. No care of customers. They did offer a $200 discount off the total to send another crew and try again. No thank you, that doesn't even cover the damage done. I don't want anyone from their company in my house again. But to not even offer an amount to cover damages is unacceptable. I guess now we wait a couple of weeks to get the money back and have a mess in the basement and no carpet. It shows us that customer service, making the customer happy, is not a priority to them. My husband has finished our entire basement himself and we were so excited to get the carpet in before Christmas (that's what hooked us was their guarantee to get it in before Christmas) Do NOT use this company. Please do not use this company! It took 2 full days for work to be done for carpet only. The first day they were from 9 am until 10:30pm and my wife and I still had to put bedrooms back together so our kids(1yr and 2yr) could go to sleep. Once they were done there was a section in one bedroom unfinished because they did not have enough. Even though the excess carpet fit the area. Also, we are very certain the installers stole items from our house. So i call and complain. Next week we get a call out of no where 8am from and installer is 15 min out. No call was received to let us know they were coming that day to finish the job. Had to cancel or plans for that day. Then we find a big glue spot in our basement from a seam. I have called 3 times and talked to a manager who said they would come October 15. They didn't show. It's been 2 months and carpet is still not done. I see many negative reviews, but my experience was pretty smooth. Ordered laminate flooring for one room. Salesman met with me at my new house, then took me to Panera and bought me a drink. (I didn't live in the new home yet so we couldn't stay there long). He is a fairly new employee but was kind and seemed to know the products well. I opted to hold off on committing while I compared prices with other companies. Empire called me a couple days later to ask if I'd like to proceed and I let them know I was finding lower prices elsewhere for similar products. They agreed to reduce the price to keep my business. A little bump in the road occurred in scheduling the install but the office quickly resolved the issue and install occurred quickly. 2 installers removed carpet and installed the laminate quite quickly and it looks great! Paying via 12 months no interest through Well's Fargo- able to set up autopay. If I had one criticism, it'd be that the price they offer seems pretty fluid- in that they are able to reduce the price to keep your business. I always prefer to be offered the low-end price from the beginning, but at least they are willing to stay competitive. read more

I can't get anyone to call me back. When I get ahold of customer service they put me on hold for 20 minutes and then finally tell me the only option is to hang up and wait for a call back. Working with Empire Today has been a complete nightmare, and I would not recommend them to anyone. I have paid for everything, but have yet to get the tile even scheduled because of their lack of communication. From the beginning, this has been a horrific experience. My original install dates for both carpet and tile was April 15th. At this point I had not paid for anything. On April 14th, I received two confirmation emails (one for carpet, one for tile), confirming my install was to happen the next day, April 15th. At 1230 on that Saturday, I had not heard from anyone, so I called the 1-800 number. They said my carpet showed it was to be installed the 17th (even though I scheduled this for the 15th, and had a confirmation email saying so), but they said the tile installed should have called by now, so they reached out to him. He claims he called me several times and was even out in front of my house, but since I didn't answer, he went to the next job and was not coming back that day. I had zero missed calls, and he even admitted to the empire rep that he did not leave a voicemail or knock on my door (even though he was sitting outside my house). He also did not contact empire to let them know he could not reach me. So I had to reschedule both carpet and tile for the following Saturday, the 22nd. The tile installer shows up shortly after 8a.m., I pay form the tile, and he begins work. The carpet installer shows up shortly after 9am, and sees that I am having tile done in the same room, and he says he cannot do the carpet while the tile is being done. So I have to reschedule the carpet, AGAIN. After about 6.5 hours of the tile installer being there, he calls me down to y basement. He shows me the tile, and says he cannot complete the job because some of the tile is 1/16th of an inch too big, so it is not lining up properly. He has to rip everything out that he has done and start over after he gets more tile in. He told me he would get more on Tuesday, but I had already scheduled the carpet to be done Tuesday, so he said he would come back to do the job (that I have already paid for) on Wednesday. I called on Saturday the 22nd to speak with a supervisor about all of this, but nobody ever called back. So on Tuesday the 25th, my carpet finally gets installed. I call to verify that my tile is still scheduled for Wednesday, the 26th, and they do not see that in their system. I ask to speak with a supervisor. I finally get a hold of one, and he tells me the installer should not have told me he would come back on the 25th. He says he will look into this and call me back in an hour. I never heard back from him. I called him back and left a message, still never heard back. I called the 1-800 number, and finally got a hold of a different supervisor, who told me the tile would not even be in stock until Thursday, the 27th. I asked if it would be possible to have it installed on a Sunday since they had made so many mistakes and that was the earliest day that worked for me. He said he would check with the installers, and assured me he would call me the following morning (Wednesday morning). By Wednesday afternoon I had heard nothing, so I called him back. He said his installer was unavailable on Sunday, so I asked him to contact a different installer. He said he was going to do that, and would call me back that same day. Never heard back from him. I now have an area of my basement that has had the originally flooring ripped out, and I have paid this company $1100 for this job. They have failed to contact me numerous times, even when I was told I would receive a call back by a specific person. read more

After looking up Empire Today for reviews, I noticed only a handful of reviews were posted and they were only very negative. So when I went into the Retail located inside the Summit Fair JCPenny and asked about the poor reviews I was informed while they are the same Empire Today we see in the commercials, they are fairly new to the retail scene and all but 1 of the reviews were from before the stores opened and the other could have been from their shop at home division as well. Which is still cause for concern, but I can say that my dealings with the staff at that location were great. They listen and talk to you and were very helpful and professional and I felt no pressure at anytime. I agree no matter where the reviews are from it is alarming when you read some of the reviews, but when you put it in perspective with a company that does hundreds of local installs to have 6 negative responses isn't really that bad, especially since we are opt to be more vocal when issues arise. I had carpet and flooring installed and it was not what I expected. I called for a appointment due to the tv commercial advertising half off. On the salesman's arrival he explained that some carpet was not on sale and this also applied to flooring. Long story short I purchased a carpet that was on sale. However there was a problem with moulding. Due to my woodwork being dark I needed dark moulding. They brought white moulding. After I made a phone call they assured me the problem would be corrected. This took more than a few days to correct. After the installer left I found some areas that still needed moulding. More phone call and the installer returned to finish the moulding job. Then several weeks later I happened to check a peice of left over carpet and stamped on the back was a date and was not 2017. I called Empire and asked about the date. I was told it came from the warehouse. The next problem the installer left me was a real surprise. In placing the flooring in a bathroom they had to remove a bathroom stool. I found the bolts that hold the stool to the floor loose and I mean loose. The other problem I found was moulding in one bath had been damaged as was a small area on the kitchen wall. read more

I honestly wish there was a way to give a lower score than one star. It took months and several crews to "complete" the work --it looks really bad. I called, emailed and sent letters to try to get somebody to fix the mess; one of the few times I was able to speak to a manager, he promised a "10% or more" refund... that was 4 months ago and I have yet to see the refund. I would not recommend this company to anyone. read more
