We wanted new carpet in our first floor master bedroom and our sunroom for our $400,000 country farm house in time for guests to arrive. We scheduled the installation for a Friday (6/15) with guests to arrive Monday (6/18). The carpet installers were to come in the morning but didn't show. After some calls to Empire, they came mid-afternoon. They demanded payment up front and we gave them the check we had arranged. They said the check was no good, however the bank confirmed there was twice the amount of the check in our account. So we just used our credit card rather than argue. They started the installation. Midway through they said they could not carpet the sunroom (for which we had just paid $2,900) because they did not have enough carpet. They said they'd come back tomorrow (Saturday) or Monday. We said "It has to be tomorrow, because our guests arrive Monday." They said OK. On Saturday there was no word from them so we called our sales agent about 11AM. She told us that if they have not called by now, they aren't coming. (Do you sense any communication issues here?) We noticed an obvious seam down the middle of our large first floor bedroom. We called to copmplain on Saturday (6/16). They returned on Thursday (6/22) and carpet the sunroom. It looked like these installers just brought a bunch of carpet remnants out to carpet the first floor master of our $400,000 house. There was no need to put a seam in the middle of the room with a 12 foot width of carpet and a piece long enough for the room. had I seen them doing this I would have stopped them but I thought I had hired professionals. I asked our guests if they noticed anything about the carpet and they said, "Yes, there's a big seam down the middle." And they are not carpet installers. We were finally able to get an "inspector" out to look at the seam on Monday, July 9th. He said they'd contact us within 48 hours. By Friday no one had contacted us. (Do you sense any communication problems?) We got a sales call on Friday (7/13) (not a call back from the inspector) from Empire Today to sell us more carpet! We said we would not do that until our concern from the previous installation was resolved. Today, Saturday July 14th, a service manager named Jennifer called to say the installation and seam meets their quality standards. I said I would never have paid $2,900 for carpet if I knew they would do such a botched job by putting an obvious seam down the middle of our master bedroom. They said it meets their standards. Why would anyone do a patchwork quilt of carpet in a luxury home where, one would assume, they'd like to sell more product. Use Empire Today at your own risk. If you have a luxury home, look for a better business to buy carpet. At minimum you have to supervise them so they don't use all their leftover remnants in your house. This was a very disappointing experience and a rip-off of our hefty carpet expenditure. read more

The absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. I waited all day for an installer . At 5pm he called to say he was on his way. I told him not to bother as I had to be somewhere at 6pm. Then trying to get in touch with someone to re-schedule is a nightmare. No one cares, it is textbook run around. They have no regard that people have to take off from work to be home all day waiting for them to not show up. I have never used them and will not use them again for the remaining rooms in my home. read more

We were stepping on sharp nails sticking up along the edges where the carpets meet the other flooring. They said to hammer down the nails. That didn't work. They had to come back a second time and hammer and staple all the nails along all the edges. They said we should step over the areas where the carpet meets the other flooring. That's ridiculous. They should have checked this upon completion of the job. They saw the previous carpet was very thick and plush and the new carpet was thin. They probably should have put new tackless with shorter nails to accommodate a thinner carpet. Hopefully the nails will not resurface over time. read more

I have used Empire today for several jobs. Four were really well done, and one was less than stellar. I called Empire this time because I wanted to install hardwood flooring in my second floor hallway. The rep was well-mannered, personable, and professional. He gave me a reasonable price and I gave him a deposit. Unfortunately, the professionalism ended when he left that Monday evening. On Wednesday, I got the "1-6pm" window call. The installer showed up after 6pm. He did not appear to have the motivation to do the job at that time. He also did not have the parts to do the job correctly. The rep told me that they would come that Saturday to do the job. Saturday morning, I got the "old 8am-6pm window"call. No show...No call. Wasted weekend day... The Rep apologized and rescheduled for the following Saturday. The work crew arrived the following Saturday morning. First thing he tells me is that he can't do some of the work that was on the contract. "OK, we can work around that," as I'm moving the furniture out of the way. Then he doesn't have enough bullnose pieces to finish the job. "OK you can finish this section right?" Yes was the answer. It is important to mention that they were talking quite a bit about the next job that they had to do this particular Saturday. Next thing is..."You have to give me the balance for the job before I begin." I called the rep because I felt that they should not receive the balance until the job was complete. We worked it out. I told them "I'll give you the check, can you please move your van because it's in my neighbor's reserved parking spot. I'll move my car so you can park there." I get the keys to move the car only to find out that they got in their van and left the job. I called the rep for the 3rd time in about 20 minutes. He told me that the installers felt "threatened" by me. Hmmm... An African-American paying customer looking for them to do a proper installation, asking them to move their van connotes me as being unreasonable, angry, impatient, or having an attitude... sounds like "code" to me. Mind you, I was considered "threatening" after offering them refreshments, and showing my willingness to omit a small section of the job that I DID pay for, and was going to "let them off the hook for." I don't play that card, but sometimes you can't let it go. Empire Today MUST do a better job at vetting their contractors. These installers were unprofessional, did not want to do the job, and acted as if the work they were contracted to do for me was not really that important. Then to try to turn things around and suggest that it was my fault (attitude) that caused them to flee from a job that they didn't want to do is insulting and very unfortunate. read more

We used Empire 17 years ago to install kitchen flooring, and they were great. A lot has changed in 17 years. After signing the contract for new kitchen flooring, the salesman informed us that we would have to move and disconnect the large appliances (oven, washer, dryer) because they don't do that. Do you believe this? My husband and I are seniors, and he is slightly disabled; there's no way we could do this. When I balked, the salesman said he would get the workers to do it. But shortly after he left, the salesman called and said he would come before and after the workmen to move, disconnect, and reconnect the appliances. He also hedged on an asphalt problem with the old flooring. He told me that we could cancel within three days, but he didn't tell me that after three days, there's a 25% cancellation fee. I had laminate installed almost a year ago, after 3 months seams started to curl up. Fast forward, I am getting my floor replaced but it has been going on 5 months for the repair to actually take place. If someone does call me back, I'm at work, and when I call back within an hour and leave a message I don't get a call back for days. I got called the morning of when the floors were to be repaired only to be told they did not have my floor in stock and they were discontinued (it was actually not the correct flooring from the beginning). I've asked for spec sheets on the flooring to be put down for 2 months with no response. I have tried calling all the previous numbers to contact them to no avail to get an answer. Lack of communication, salesman was shady and actually found out he overcharged me saying he was actually saving me money, he never filed the change of floor request. We ordered carpeting for our stairs in our new home over 2 weeks ago. They gave us options for install dates, and we picked January 20th, 12 days after our order was placed. I got a confirmation phone call on Tuesday morning saying they would be at my house by 8am. today I got a call at 8:10am. Two of their installers called in sick this morning and they needed to reschedule my install for Thursday. I find it hard to believe that 2 sick installers can shut down their whole operation. Its unprofessional for them to promise, then confirm the install and not come through. With a reschedule for Thursday, how am I supposed to have the confidence that they will show up? I had to take a day from work for this, and now I have to take a 2nd day off on Thursday. To be quite honest, if they are a no show on Thursday, I'm cancelling. At the end of the day, carpet is carpet, lots of companies offer the same products. It's the service and the customer service, which Empire Today rates at 0 stars. Regardless of how this goes, I will not be buying again nor recommending Empire Today. They are not reliable and that is much more important than price. read more

They called at 9am ON THE DAY OF INSTALLATION to say they "didn't have enough installers" and needed to reschedule. I thought that was odd being that they called the day before to confirm. I would think they would have known by then if they were going to be understaffed. After reading a bunch of Yelp reviews (which I should have done before) it was clear that Empire does this ALL OF THE TIME. I decided to cancel the order and have now been on hold for 45 minutes trying to reach the cancellation department. This is just bad business. So now half my house is stuffed into one room and hallway since we cleared everything out for the install. I am so disappointed. UPDATE: I called back and finally spoke to someone about cancelling the order. First they tried to negotiate then proceeded to argue with me before finally giving up and cancelling the order. They told me I should not believe the negative Yelp reviews people have posted. They also "flagged" our address in case we try to place an order with them in the future. I don't believe everything I read but this happened just like all the other reviews of last minute schedule changes that disrupted people's lives. read more

OK, so settle in for this story. I am heading up a "spruce up" project at the Bergen County Y-JCC. Part of it is replacing the flooring in the main locker rooms. A generous member was able to get us a great deal on tile, but the installation cost was over the top so I needed a plan B, and fast! The need for speed drew me to the commercial department at Empire. The salesman arrived the next day, as promised, measured the space and presented us only with samples that were indoor outdoor carpeting that is appropriate for a wet space. We paid in advance and the delivery was set for the following Wednesday (8/29/12). When I called to confirm the installation, I was told that the special order carpet wouldn't arrive until Thursday. We knew it was a special order, so we set up for installation on Saturday, 9/1/12. That morning, the installer arrived with only enough carpet for 1 locker room, no glue and, oh yeah, this is important, THE WRONG CARPET! After hours on the phone with clueless Empire people, I finally got to installation. The fellow was apologetic and said they would come to install the carpet in one locker room on Wednesday, 9/5/12. Wednesday they again came with no glue, no cove base molding and, guess what...THE WRONG CARPET! More hours on the phone and the head of installation out of the Hackensack facility promised that he would personally oversee loading the van on Friday,yesterday, 9/7/12. Yesterday the installer arrived and asked that we sign a release holding him harmless from damage to the carpet from water, remember, this is supposed to be indoor outdoor carpet. We refused and, to show us the problem, cut a clipping, turned it over, poured water on it and it fell apart. We sent him back. Friday afternoon I called VISA and together we cancelled the order and arranged for credit. The moral of the story is STAY AWAY FROM EMPIRE TODAY! This is the worst company that I have ever dealt with. I called for an appt. last week & told the rep that I saw two styles of carpet of their website that I like. I informed the rep TWO times to make sure salesmen brings samples of them. I am also doing another bedroom with laminate! Right before appt. the rep. called to tell me he was on his way. I asked, "Do you have the samples of the two styles (Not colors) of carpet that I want"? He asked,"What samples"? We then Rescheduled for Fri. I had a window of 11-1. No one showed up. I called Empire-the rep said, "We have you on for Tues, 1-3. I told her she had the day & time wrong. I am not home on Tuesday-so I never would have made an appt. for that day. We re-scheduled for Wed (Yesterday from 11-1). By 1:30-No one called or showed up. I called Empire- the rep called the salesmen & he said, "He got caught up at another customer & will call me 10 minutes before new arrival time at 3:00. Well 3:00 came & went. I called Empire again & another rep reached out to salesmen-he put me on hold- Came back on phone one minute later & kept saying hello, hello, hello. I kept answering him and thenHe hung up. The salesmen finally called me at 5:15. He asked, "Do you want me to come now"? At this point-I was fed up with Empire! I feel like I am in the twilight zone. EMPIRE never The worst experience ever. EMPIRE is terrible about keeping appointments and too expensive. We thought that by paying $1100 to have our floor installed, it would be faster than Home Depot at $750 (for a better quality product). We were so wrong. They were supposed to come in on Saturday and install the floor, but they cancelled on us because they were short on installers. So, we asked what day was best for them and they recommended Tuesday. We took the Tuesday date. On Tuesday (after having taken time off of work) we got an automated call saying that we were second on the list, with no estimated time of arrival. After calling customer service to get a more exact time, they said 4-6PM (the last job of the day). First they missed our initial appointment, now they gave us the last time slot, with no guarantee that they would show up or even be able to finish the job on time. For our inconvenience, they gave us a meager $50 discount (after I complained and asked to speak to a manager). If you want to pay too much and wait forever to have your floor installed, go with EMPIRE. 8/19/18 update So, no surprise, they missed the appointment on Tuesday 8/14/18 (the second appointment in a row that they missed). We were scheduled for 4-6PM and called in at 6:20PM (after calling multiple times before that) to ask where the installer was. The representative said to wait until 6 (even though it was currently 6:20 PM). They didn't even know the time or that the appointment had been missed. We rescheduled for 8/18/18 and ... they didn't have enough installers, so missed the 3rd appointment. We have now rescheduled for the 4th time for 8/21/18. The quality of service, or lack thereof, is shockingly poor. There are no apologies for the inconvenience and no effort made to remedy the situation. EMPIRE will never follow up with you. You have to constantly call them and remind them that you made an appointment. Avoid this company like the plague it is. 8/21/18 update On the 4th appointment EMPIRE finally showed up. At this point they measured the moisture in the area and said that they could not install the floor, since the moisture was too high. So, after wasting weeks of our time, they were not even able to complete the job. The good part was that they did not try to install a product that would not have worked for the area. The bad part was that we had to wait weeks to find out that the floor we had chosen was not appropriate for the area. EMPIRE should have tested the moisture level on day one and saved us all of this time and hassle. They did refund our initial deposit, so that increased the rating to two stars from one star. read more

We were treated terribly by every single person we contacted at Empire including our salesman, $6800 order and they treated us like garbage, I made a predictment, 1 year they will be out of business and bankrupt, and they deserve it!!! They ran out of tile in the middle of our job because their 3 rd party contractors stole it for their own benefit, we know that because we counted the amount of boxes they brought because they would be left out all night and then all of a sudden 10 boxes we missing and not a single tile layer in our floors yet, and we had to wait 1 week for it to come in, with half cement disgusting floors and our rooms completely a mess, not one phone call to rectify or say they were sorry, no one, I left 20 messages for a manager and no one ever called me back, you know why? there are no managers, they are all young kids inexperienced working from home, after calling ten times a day I was able to finish their sentences with all their lies they all told! What a scam business, I felt like I was in the twilight zone, and couldn't get out of the nightmare I was in, the best when they finally got the tile to us that they were missing they brought me a invoice that I was supposed to sign and it had an additional charge for $3000 for the additional tile, really you quoted me a total price already, and it was my fault you miscalculated the amount or measured wrong, or were robbed, thank God I read everything but imagine a poor elderly person or someone who wasn't on guard they would have been scammed and paid more! Do not go with them, do not let them scam you with their buy one get one free and all that bull, they don't even know about the sales when they come to your home and jack up prices so you pay the same amount anyway, stay away!!!!! read more

Do not waste your time with this company. I met the sales guy Robert at a property I manage 100 miles from my home. The 1000 sq ft basement with ripout and base was initially quoted at a ridiculous $17000. By the end of the discussion magically the price was 7100. Still too high. Received an email a few days later from corporate offering to do the job at $6500. I agreed. But they wouldn't email, fax, or mail the contract. After corporate intervention again, they agreed to drive to me for signature and for my deposit. I asked them to at least send me prelim contract so I could review in advance and I reminded the sales guy to be sure to include the tip Out and wall base. He then actually said he did not remember including these and no longer had the measurements and would need to see the job site again. Too lazy to drive to me or did he get caught in a "bait and switch"? Of course I wasn't going to drive 100 miles for that! I called corporate and they agreed this was terrible service and that they had the measurements and yes, the price included ripout and base and with the measurements on the computer, they could lower the price. But they said the sales manager for Orange County NY absolutely refused to budge. It was then that I decided to write this review and thank goodness I didn't use them because, based on the reviews, this is a company to avoid. Dodged that one! read more

Had Empire install carpet in my townhouse a year & a half ago. Carpet started rippling a month ago & I recently called customer service to get it fixed they wanted to charge $279 because my 1 yr warranty was up. I had a friend that lays carpet take a look & he said this was an installation issue. I called & spoke to Justin in customer service & explained that I thought it was an installation problem & he told me that if I didn't want to pay the $279 I could find someone else to fix it. I immediately asked to speak to his manager. She called me back & was just as unhelpful & when I told her I wanted to be removed from the database & I would never do business with Empire again, she hung up on me. Not only is the quality of the work poor the customer service is terrible. I own several properties & Empire will never get a dime of my money again. I would give zero stars but that's not an option. They came to my house on 7/14 after we got everything ready and waited all day. They claimed that the salesman measured incorrectly and that instead of needing 18 feet of carpet we needed 25 feet so they couldn't do the job and they left! When I called customer service and asked can they just go get more carpet and come back they claimed they would "look into it" and call me back within 24 hours. Well of course no one called so I called them Monday afternoon to make sure I gave them 24 hours in businesses days. They claimed that there was nothing they could do so I asked if they could come Tuesday 7/17 and they utterly refused despite that better fitting my schedule. The claimed they would come Wednesday 7/18 and I agreed and took that day off. So on Wednesday morning AFTER I had already taken off work they called me and said "oh we have some bad news, we still don't have the right amount of carpet to do the job" after they had already taken over my life on Saturday. I was livid and demanded that they do whatever they needed to do to get the correct amount of carpet and come that day. They lied and said they would try to see what they could do only after repeatedly refusing to do anything and they never called me back despite me asking them to. I will never recommend them to a soul and I will never do business with them EVER! I found a MUCH better company near Philadelphia , and family run business, that came out the same day Empire stiffed me for the second time and they gave me an estimate. After we ordered over 1000 square feet of carpeting from Joe on a Saturday, 4 bedrooms and living room, he said we could have installation following Friday. He drove from Philadelphia to Wildwood Crest NJ. Got a little apprehensive reading reviews. We got a call Friday morning with an 11-3 window. Called at 12 to find out if they were on time and told they'd be there in an hour. Were on time. Oscar and Marco were the installers. They were courteous, neat and did a great job. Were done by 4:30, practically vacuumed their way out. Put all the furniture back in place. Maybe we were lucky with our salesman and installers, but would definitely recommend Empire. read more

Complete bait and switch. Salesperson takes no responsibility for things the installers blame the take off on. Quality of fabrics and wood is poor. Commercials and ads are misleading. Would never recommend for any flooring needs. Installation team of carpet area was much better than installation of wood area. There is always something that needs to be added to installation that was never brought up at any consults. Do yourself a favor and go and buy local. They have complete disregard for customer satisfaction. Had to escalate everything to a management level. After going on line to redo the house I just bought I got Empire to quote me. They are having a special on buy one room at the high price and get every other room for $50. What a scam. First it was for select styles and the flooring I need was featured in the add. When I said I wanted it, it wasn't available and the quotes went from 47,000 to 28,000 if we took stuff we didn't want. I haven't had carpet installed yet, but based on the salesman I wouldn't recommend these guys. Basically the guy scribbled down everything on a piece of paper which we wouldn't let us see, (we asked for several rooms to be done) then getting him to break it out into the quote into per room pieces was like pulling teeth. Finally, after telling him we wanted to wait a week to consider his price, he gave us the old, "if you don't make your decision now, I lose my commission nonsense" (probably all BS). In the end I did go with Empire, because my wife really wanted the work done, but I wouldn't go with them EVER again. Bottom line, if you don't like high pressure sales guys who don't want to tell you details on what you are paying (cost per square foot) cost broken out by room, and give you the old here's the deal, take it or leave it nonsense. don't deal with Empire. read more

I was very skeptical of Empire Carpet because I could not find a good review online. They were giving me a very good price so decided to go with them despite the bad reviews because the price was so compelling. I must say they far exceeded my expectations. After having read reviews about unhappy customers who complained the carpet they got was different from the samples - I contacted Empire to express my concerns and they had someone send me the sample carpet I had agreed to purchase weeks before my install so I could verify the carpet I got was exactly like the carpet that the sales person showed me. On the day of the install the carpet was exactly what I had ordered. The installers were great and did a fantastic job. I am very happy I went with Empire and I think the number of online negative reviews relative to positive reviews is misleading because for me they certainly did a good job. Based on my experience I would very happily recommend Empire to family and friends.
