Henry Foy's Emporium Wine in downtown Alex City has the best wine, specialty beer, and cigar selection around. If you're visiting the Lake Martin area, and are in need of some wine, slip by Emporium Wine. Henry does a great job of having some of the more popular labels, plus a couple that you might like to try after his recommendations. He also keeps lots of good beer on hand that you won't find in the corner grocery, plus cigars. I don't smoke them but those who do tell me it's a good selection. Henry also has some paintings and framed photography from some local artists. He's located downtown in a beautiful old refurbished building. Worth a stop, especially if you are coming to the lake from Birmingham. Downtown is not far from 280, so it won't take you long. read more

Brought my grandmother here for lunch recently. We received very nice service from a woman who sat us promptly and took very good care of us. We asked her several questions of which she answered with great charm and personality. She told us of the Wine and painting classes they host for locals, which we think is great! We all had the grilled cheese and soup which was very good and came out hot and quickly! After we finished lunch, we took a look around the wine shop, being from Los Angeles and in the wine business, I noticed they had some very nice wines of which I am very familiar with. Great selections! Very impressed. Here is the reason I am not giving 5 stars- Whoever the grumpy old man is with the pony tail. Let me explain. While taking a look through the wine shop we happened to ask if they carried any "Ice wine" or "Late Harvest" wine. The teller wasn't sure so he looked over to this man for an answer and we received a very abrupt and grumpy "NO". That was it. Nothing more, nothing less, no conversation, nothing more than a very discouraging and somewhat rude answer. We brushed it off, yet I wanted to see if maybe this was a fluke. I walked over to where the man was sitting and complemented a wine that I saw displayed right next to him. Our waitress responded, agreeing that the wine was indeed a good one. The pony tail looked at me, got up from his chair, not saying a word and walked out of the room. Maybe pony tail was having a bad day?? We had a great experience up until our interaction with Pony Tail. We were actually going to buy some wine but I talked myself and my father out of it, stating that we didn't want to give anymore business to such an ungrateful person who doesn't recognize the importance of interaction with his customers. His humidor is like a candy store for cigar aficionados. Local art is displayed and can be purchased. He often holds wine tastings and his wife, Mary Ann, who prefers to stay behind the scenes, provides delicious finger foods to help open up the wines' flavors. By day, they serve a wonder light lunch. Blair and all the staff are knowledgeable and treat you like family. It's a great evening when they stay open a little later, and you can snuggle into a comfy sofa and chat up the colorful locals..with a great little glass of vino. Salute! read more

Had lunch there with my husband, mother and son yesterday.... awakened at 2am sick, sick, sick... we both ( my husband and I ) had the tomato tortellini veggie soup.... we all had grilled cheese sandwiches... so far it's just the two of us sick, so I'm thinking it was the soup... never will we eat there again...
