Warning : EXTREMELY religious dojo. My children tried this dojo out for 2 months. I am not sure honestly, but it seems like the children were being taught by other children, or teenagers that were helping out. They were all very nice and my children and I liked them a lot. The kids did have fun, but the classes felt very unstructured, kind of random warm ups and drills. The first month was pretty good, I enjoyed watching my kids have fun running around and they were SO excited to learn kung fu. However... I did begin to notice the owner preaches pretty much every single time he opens his mouth. I am respectful of other religions and cultures, and I try to teach my children to be as well, so we let it be and listened. My kids began feeling uncomfortable asking me why he talks about his god and Jesus so much, and how they didn't like that he was making them pray with him. I honestly did not like that either, but it teaches the kids about different types of people. We have all had experiences with cult like religious people, and I guess this was going to be my children's first experience with one. I planned to let it happen and let them observe. I told my kids if it became too uncomfortable with him preaching and praying that we would leave. Well the school (mostly the owner) burned their relationship with my children real fast after that. They invited my kids to a belt seminar, cosmo himself told them they were eligible for a stripe and told them to come to the belt ceremony early to warm up. So we show up the next evening for the ceremony, my children go warm up for 15 minutes (my daughter was so proud of herself and had been practicing) then they escorted all the children to the mat to sit and watch each other earn their belts. Yea well at that moment they basically tell my kids oh surprise you are NOT eligible for a belt. Just sit and watch everyone else show what they know and you don't get to participate. My kids are 5 and 7. They were absolutely CRUSHED. After a little while of watching all the other kids show off their skills. And the owner telling one of the younger teachers specifically not to let my son go up when they were trying to fill time, my daughter grabbed her brother and came to me asking to leave. She was holding back tears trying to be strong. She was humiliated. The drive home was AWFUL. Just heartbreaking. She thought the owner made them come to the belt ceremony just to embarrass them and single them out. They were the only kids there who weren't allowed to participate. All the other kids who weren't eligible did not show up. But we were specifically told to come. I emailed them and said I was done. The school tried to contact me after to apologize and offered to basically just give my children the belts *face palm* but it was never about the belts, it was about how they made my children feel. Uncomfortable, weirded out, and then very hurt. They als told me the kids are eligible for belts every 3 months, so to me it sounds pay based not skill based. The program is also very very expensive. So there it is. My children's first experience with a very very religious person and environment ended with them feeling very burned and hurt. I would also like to say, if I would have know how insane the preaching was, I would have never signed my children up. They make the kids pray, constant preaching. They play Christian music on a television sometimes. There is even a video on instagram of the owner asking a group of children if they believe in god, which is HIGHLY inappropriate to put other peoples children on the spot like that. Let this be a warning that it is definitely too much and uncomfortable for kids that aren't already deep in that church life. read more

My husband and daughter train at Empty Hand. The atmosphere is so welcoming and they absolutely make you feel like family. I feel like we can take any concerns in martial arts or even in life and they will help encourage and support. Since starting my daughter has been inviting friends like crazy. She even won an award for the most friends invited. Many have come to try it out and even sign up. She wants to be there every chance she gets even if it's just to clean up. The owner and staff make her feel welcomed and valued. I've also seen a change in my husband. I've seen him begin to grow as a leader and in confidence. I love that they offer a family class and the two of them can train together. Highly recommend if you want a dojo that treats you like family and will invest in you and help you grow in martial arts and in life! read more

Do Not Recommend! The sheer amount of virtue signaling that Masto Cosmo does astounds me. Nothing is done for the greater good of humanity, but more to flex and boost his Ego. The dojo, which is excessively religious, isn't necessarily wrong. Still, constant preaching about God with various faiths in a personal defense dojo seems odd, and in the end, it's all for personal gain. Also, this place will take every opportunity to charge you more, as it's more of a business than anything else; perceptually, it's a greedy business. I don't hate this place, but these things discouraged us from continuing after a year because we were looking for a dojo, not a place for some egomaniac to flex about how he's helping the world and waiting for all of us to clap and cheer. 3.5/10 Edit: Just so you can see my response because you blocked me after your last comment from posting. Ahh, I see you decided to take the defensive/denial approach instead of addressing some obvious shortcomings. Humility is a beautiful thing, and I would encourage you to take a look at some of this feedback and go with it. These aren't just opinions; they are factual events that have happened. Almost a year of going there, and the only only conversations I've had with anyone were.."Are you signing up for this event for $$$$" or "this is what charity I'm working on, and I'm so great; I do so much charity." instead of having a real conversation and understanding some of the nuances with your students and their family. Master Cosmo is the type of person to film himself giving a homeless man a dollar, so he can put it on the internet to show people he gives to the homeless. i've been training here for almost 8 years and my life has had a huge impact because of it. started off just watching my brother train and just sat there doing nothing until one day master cosmo asked if i wanted to try out a class and i liked it and he gave me a scholarship to train in return i helped out with the younger kids and at events and anything i could help out in. There's no way i can ever repay Cosmo and Sarah with everything they have done for me and not just me but other people. I feel like i've finally found a place that i can call a safe home. read more

I really wanted to like this place, it's a great location, great staff, organized,clean and has decent training but after six months I couldn't take the Christian indoctrination anymore. I do not think it is ethically right as a business that accommodates mostly to children to take every opportunity to plug religious beliefs into their vulnerable minds unless you are advertising those motives as a part of your business and parents know what they are signing up for. The manor at which Master Cosmo assumes that every kid in the dojo is a follower of the same faith, actually started to feel a bit discriminatory and narcissistic. I was really disappointed to have to leave because I really adored the kids he used as teachers. So if you have the same spiritual beliefs as Master Cosmo or you want Bible school and martial arts all in one class, this place will be great for you.. I personally was just wanting someone to teach my kid Kung Fu. However, if I was looking for a Kung Fu class that incorporated a spiritual belief system into the practice I would probably pick one that incorporated the philosophy of Taoism which was what Kung Fu was grounded in (1111-255 BC) because that would seem to make the most logical sense. One perplexing question that always crossed my mind while I was at this Dojo (listening to Master Cosmo citing bible verses) was WWJD..If Jesus crossed paths with the Taoist that originated Kun Fu would he learn and follow the Taoist beliefs and use Kun Fu on his enemies? ... food for thought read more

Empty Hand Combat has been a wonderful blessing to our family. We have a lot of kids and are always looking to help them build confidence, develop their character, focus on health/ exercise, and make a few friends. Not only did we find all of that when we signed up 3 of our boys, but we also found that what our boys were being trained for was back by Biblical teachings. This is one of the best martial arts studios that we have visited. My family went to the dojo and found many opportunities for training. I really loved the woman's self defense classes and feel that I am better prepared to protect myself. My daughters also joined a self defense class geared for young ladies. This class equipped my daughters with valuable techniques to help them to defend themselves if necessary. We so appreciate and value the training and attention that Master Zimik gave to his classes. He received his Black Belt on his 10th birthday and has truly because one of the coolest kids I know. He has been molded by Cosmo into a caring, kind, giving, encouraging boy.
