Splitrock Farm and Retreat - More glam from the communal area

The property has free roaming goats that are so adorable and very friendly, as well as dogs and a couple cats that we spotted. We checked in and out on our own and it was a super relaxing experience!

As it turns out, the people who own the "glamping" parts of the property (the domes and outfitted tents) are not there at all, and the on site people have no control over how those things are managed or kept up. PLUS, there is hardly ever anyone "on site". First, they don't tell you that if you are coming from the north on the 15, the road to get in is worse than the Road to Hanna without the great views. It is so much smarter to go a little further on the 15 and take the Mission Road through Fallbrook...one of the many, MANY ways the owners, organizers fail their guests. Upon arriving, the signage is TERRIBLE. The little "store" is a shack that is only open on weekends despite the fact that our paperwork said it was only closed on Mondays. Once we found our "glamping dome", with the help of some ladies who may or may not have worked there, (never confirmed) all the instructions on how to self check in didn't matter because there was no key in the lockbox and the door was open. ?? The dome is in terrible shape...stained, old, with the outside "windows" ostensibly so you could "stargaze" from your bed at night so filthy that you could barely see through them. The dome itself is being held together with duct tape, horribly hot because they have no ventilation at all, (most domes have ventilation through the roof center since hot air rises) and dirty. There is a weird gang plug situation hanging from an outlet that seriously looks like a fire hazzard. The bedspread was covered in stains. We would later realize that the mattress was old, soft and lumpy. Later, when the sun went down and it was actually cold, we realized that the dome had no blankets. Just the thin, filthy bedspread. The locks on the bathrooms didn't latch closed, so animals, bugs, etc could easily get in there, and you had to have someone stand guard so no one walked in on you. There was very little toilet paper so we used our own because we didn't want to strand the other guests that were there. There is a nice shower in one of the bathrooms, but I heard from multiple people at the campsite next to us that there was ZERO hot water and when my husband investigated, the propane tank used to heat it was completely empty. While we were eating lunch at our (very weathered, very old, not glamping) picnic table, the herd of goats came over and immediately tried to steal all of our food! I understand that these are free roaming, but it would have been nice to be warned that they would literally bite you to get the food out of your hands. They were not "friendly". They were demanding and hungry. After a terrible night in the most uncomfortable bed, we decided to take a walk and see the rest of the animals, which for some reason are penned up (some are free roaming, some are not). We were excited to see that the alpaca was there in the same area as the goats, chickens and pigs, laying down. Until we realized that he was dead. I had to tell THEM that their alpaca was dead. And the "Camp Host" actually argued with me via text when I contacted her and said "That is Pedro. He is very old and a deep sleeper". I'm like, he's such a deep sleeper that he is not breathing. Later, she confirmed via text that he was, indeed dead. GLAMPING BABY! The "community area" where you were supposed to be able to BBQ and do group activities was an absolute joke....looks like no one has utilized or cleaned it up in years. BBQ was filthy, chairs laying on their sides, and a very sick looking dog laying miserably on it's side. When we finally were contacted by Crystal the "Camp Host" from the texts, she gave a lot of excuses..the domes and tents being out of their control, how they had asked repeatedly that the pictures and info be changed to no avail, and how they were probably going to stop offering the "glamping" option at all and just do regular camping. But we have been to many, many camping sites that are well run, clean, managed on site, with clear directions and expectations and this is not it. So many things went wrong, and WHO IS CARING FOR THOSE ANIMALS WHEN THEY DON'T SEEM TO HAVE ANYONE PERMANENTLY ON SITE??? We were there for 24 hours before anyone returned our texts/calls. How can you have a dead alpaca in a pen for literal hours when there are probably 50 other animals in there? Who is feeding/caring for/checking on them?? What was wrong with that poor dog? The Range Fire saved us by giving us an excellent final reason to leave because we knew with certainty that this camp was ill prepared for ANY kind of emergency when they couldn't even provide toilet paper, blankets, adequate instructions or care for their own animals. We have done rustic camping before and had very nice experiences. This was supposed to be GLAMPING at glamping prices and it sucked!

Del Mar Beach & Marina - Kids found a bunch of baby sand piggies

The kids had fun looking for sand piggies, shells and sand dollars while wading in the shore and playing in the sand. I took a long walk from the beach side to the marina side where they had a little jetty you could walk out on and I was able to do my son's senior pictures. The restrooms were decent and clean, lots of stalls, space with nice toilets (not those stainless steel ones at city parks) plus showers with hot water! There is also grass hut looking gazebos, a laundry facility and a playground on the beach. My only complaint would be there was a lot of trash on the beach including glass bottles and while my kids were digging, they uncovered a bunch of beer cans! Send out the junior marines to police the area.

Definitely recommend getting a beachfront view cottage. It was nice to explore camp Pendleton and visit local eateries in Oceanside on the marina. The cottages were one bedroom and one kitchenette in a small living space. The kitchen was equipped with dishes enough for four people. The only thing that I did not enjoy, is that no matter how much you clean there will be sand everywhere considering you are right on the beach. You can say that this might be glamping on the beach. We stayed one night in a marina view cottage and was able to watch some military training early in the morning. The next two nights we stayed in the beachfront cottage and woke up to the view of the beautiful beach. The beach is very clean with soft sand. It was hard to believe California had such soft sand that you would normally find on Hawaii.
