Dr Sexton is an excellent doctor. He spends the time needed to take care of his patients. He is a kind person and very knowledgeable.

This is one of those where you sit and sigh deeply before beginning. So, it's obvious I'm not much of a Yelper. And the urge generally hits when I have a bad experience amongst the many good ones, so maybe next time I'll be more conscious of making time to post about one of those good ones. For now, I can't get this bad one off my mind. This guy is an atrocious example of a doctor. I had the same doc for 20 years and he's headed toward the retirement phase of his career, so I decided to get the jump on finding someone new. A very close, trusted person to me recommended Sexton so I made an initial appointment. From the get-go it seemed like a lovely place. Beautiful, clean, friendly staff (must have changed over since some of the other bad reviews), and almost an exclusive vibe. But as soon as Sexton opened his mouth I knew I was in the wrong place. This guy is a dismissive, egomaniacal used car salesman. Everything out of his mouth either sounded rehearsed or condescending, and it seemed utterly impossible to him that I basically said I feel fine. Instead of accepting that, he proceeded to lecture me with a bunch of canned, pre-written responses to help with my supposed "ailments". Um, I just said I feel fine..? Then he went on to search Google on his giant, super fancy hi-tech touchscreen for different things to give me advice on.....after I said I feel fine. I have a big screen TV and the ability to search the web. Thanks anyway. Then when trying to transfer over some prescriptions to his practice, he accused me of seeking meds. This is where my review goes from funny-ish to seriously concerned. I've never been addicted to anything. I've never taken any drugs outside the norm. I've barely even been in the same neighborhood as opiates or any other of the scary drugs that are happening now. I'm like, boring, by most standards. This behavior is all well-documented in my medical history which Sexton had access to. This weirdo completely misconstrued and exaggerated my prescription request and managed to make me feel like a meds-seeker. I also work in a field where I work to prosecute criminals, so there's that. I could be wrong and I'd be willing to admit it, but my feeling is that Sexton didn't like not being the one with the upper hand. I wasn't a "patient" enough for him, and he didn't appreciate being told I'm in tune with my body more than he is. After he realized he had nothing to immediately treat me for, he spent the last 20 minutes of our office visit recommending comedy videos to me. It felt like a colossal waste of time. I can't speak to his actual ability to treat legitimate issues, so do maybe get that initial appointment and see for yourself. But for me he's a no-freaking-way. There was a time when doctors considered themselves above everyone else, before the time of collaborative care began, and Sexton, despite his relatively young age, seems to be stuck in that time. He knows more about you than you do, apparently. read more

This doctor seems to really want you to admire him, but over time, you will discover his excessive neediness comes at cost of his performing the basics of his job. My experiences included 1) his refusal to order simple tests covered by insurance and instead ordering more expensive tests widely known to be less effective, therefore not covered by insurance, resulting in hundreds of dollars in unnecessary out of pocket costs and delayed treatment (even his peers at Scripps have since questioned the validity of what he ordered) 2) his inventing non-existent issues and/or crafting absurd theories in inaccurate doctors notes written more like attorney arguments that if not absurd might prove how smart he is 3) his further delaying treatment of actual medical issues with all kinds of alternative recommendations ranging from taking a colonoscopy prep for stomach issues that didn't involve any kind of colonoscopy, his issuing of a medical marijuana card with instructions to go talk to the "Budtender" about how he could help, or his recommendations to watch his favorite Netflix series for non-existent issues instead of any kind of recommendation to address real ones. Hopefully this review will you help find a real doctor instead. read more

I went for my monthly visit and saw Joanne like always. I mentioned my heart seemed like it was pounding more than normal. I said I felt fine but she noticed a few differences in me. My face was reddish and my handwriting was messy (I fill out a form each time). Her gut was to give me an EKG and of course Dr Sexton said yes. Well, I was in aFib and needed to go to the Emergency Room. 2+ days later and I went home with my heart good (sinus rhythm) and no stroke. Joanne was thinking of my health and saved my life. I am so proud and thankful to Dr Sexton and Joanne for always having my back. The next appointment after my hospital stay was highly anticipated by me. I had written a thank you letter to Dr Sexton and Joanne but wanted to see my 'family' in person. Tears were shed and hugs were given. Encinitas Family Care is the perfect name of my Drs office. My husband I were looking for a good family care and we had heard good things. Our first appointment went great. The doctor stressed his accessibility and how easy he would be to get in touch with for routine things. Cut to the following year and I have a immediate medical need. The office got me in that same day. When I showed up to the appointment it was obviously busy and I was whisked away to the nurse. She took down my symptoms and diagnosed me and sent me on my way with an antibiotic that I wasn't super familiar with for a three day period. The infection didn't clear up and when I called to get it figured out I was treated like I didn't exist and I had never been to the office. The scheduler got me into the office again and went through the same deal with the nurse except this time she said she didn't know what to do and the doctor was busy...what? So she told me she would call me to tell me what he thought and then we would get another prescription going. Guess what...no phone call. Gave them a call today and the same nurse seemed to have no idea who I was and what was going on. She then pulled up my file and told me that the lab work was back and couldn't find it but she would call me when she found it. What Keep in mind I haven't once talked to a doctor or a nurse practitioner. They made me feel like my problem wasn't urgent and I was a waste of time. Pretty sure I'm paying to see a doctor...This practice is all flash and no substance. Stay away. I'm now off to the minute clinic and I should have just done that in the first place... read more

Dr. Sexton is not only an amazing doctor but highly respected by his peers and has an excellent bedside manner. He's always cheery , helpful and happy, although no BS. (Which I like). He truly cares and excels in his ability to get people off medications, when other doctors have failed to. I just wish I would have found him years ago! As for claims that the office staff is "rude", that is just nonsense. Every individual at his practice is wonderful. For those judging, we don't always have good days, stuff happens in our daily lives but I have NEVER seen anyone at this practice provide anything but thorough, friendly, caring and knowledgeable care. They are very careful about your own wishes (to go on or off meds, etc) and make it very clear that you don't "have to do" anything. I have seen patients in there going through withdrawal from anything from street drugs to prescription medication and my hope is that more people find him. I know he's the first person I would recommend if a loved one needed help. read more

Dr. Perry Sexton likes to talk and act like he is educating his patients and coming from a place of science. I was his patient for 3 years, and I came to learn he is very rigid in his view. His first response is to prescribe medication. There are no questions on diet or lifestyle. I ended up going to a functional medicine doctor to try and find root causes for some of my ailments. Dr. Sexton was unwilling to add tests on to lab work that was ordered. He was unwilling to partner with another doctor in order to improve my health. I changed my primary care doctor and am so happy I did. My new doctor is more open-minded and willing to be a partner in making sure my health concerns are resolved. read more

Best Dr.'s visit I have had since I left my family Dr. in Charlotte many years ago. Amazing customer service and bedside manner. Haven't had a Doctor spend that much time with me in 10 years. Dr. Sexton is probably the most knowledgeable Dr. I have had, since I was in the Harvard Medical School Concussion Study. He has a back highly intelligent East Coast or Norcal knowledge level with a SoCal Holistic style and approach (which I really dig). Walked right in and they were waiting on me. Kelsey is a sweetheart. So are the nurses. Don't know what all these other idiots are talking about on her. I've never had a better front desk experience in my life. Labs and X rays and Orthopedic are in the building. It really is a one stop shop for all your medical needs. So pleased to be a client. To all you complainers on here: Just moved here from Texas and this was such a breath of fresh air after having to deal with the overbooked and under educated family "clinics" in the Plano Area. You have no idea what bad customer service and being herded into overbooked offices where you wait for ever to see a nurse practitioner (or maybe a doctor if you're lucky) is like! If you like cash pay and Obamacare those are you're options. Get your ass outta bed and make your appointment if you don't like cancellation fees. Grow up. We are fairly new to the area and needed to establish a base for our healthcare needs. We chose Dr. Perry Sexton and his team base on reviews we saw (Thank you yelp!) and the fact that they took our obscure insurance. Both my husband and myself had very pleasant experiences. The office is very hands-on which is different. I felt like an actual person while being evaluated not just some piece of meat that needed to be prodded, poked and check for suitability. As previous reviews mentioned, Dr. Sexton aims for lifelong solutions that fit with what I want to my body and with scientific fact regarding what works. He cares a lot about educating the patient so that you can make informed decisions regarding your health care. The whole office vibe is different. I literally thought I walked into the wrong place. Typically doctor's offices are cold, uninviting, places where you get to wait to hopefully have 5-10 minutes of actual face to face time with your physician. That is not the case at Encinitas Family Care. I completely felt like I walked in to a health spa and I'm pretty sure Dr. Perry sat and talked with me for at least 30-40 minutes! Awesome healthcare in a comfortable, inviting environment, with well trained nurses and doctor...I would have done myself and my health a huge disservice by not choosing them. read more

I haven't seen Dr. Sexton for a few years because I moved downtown. I always liked going to his office because he was great and his staff was awesome but it wasn't until recently trying to find another doctor in this area that I realized just how good he is. I've switched primary care physicians twice in San Diego and am in the process of switching again because these guys are so bad. If Dr. Sexton were closer I would use his services in a heartbeat. Honestly I expected to meet my new doctor in the same manner I have met ever other doctor in my entire adult life. I wasn't prepared for this extraordinary experience. Waling into the 'waiting room' I was struck by how comfortable and professional the environment is. The receptionist was engaging and effective. She welcomed me warmly. I expected to wait in the waiting room the usual amount of time (20 to 30 mins) so I grabbed a magazine and began to settle in. Well it couldn't have been more than 2 minutes when I was asked to enter the patient room to meet with my doctor. I sat with another very warm and engaging person who took information about me (I didn't have to fill out a single form!!!!). During the interview Dr. Sexton came in. He was so kind and spent a lot of time asking me about my history and what I wanted to accomplish regarding my health. Then I spent time with the FANTASTIC Mr. Rick! I learned so much about how to help my own body, it was amazing. So, if you are looking for a totally new medical experience where you speak with your doctor for more than 5 minutes and where everyone in the practice has a vesting interest in your health and wellbeing I would totally recommend that you make Dr. Sexton your primary care doctor. If you're thinking of going to Dr. Sexton I encourage you to read all of the bad reviews online first. He was my doctor for many years and I refused to believe the horror stories until recently. There are numerous allegations of patient confidentiality being breached, gaslighting, pushing pills and then refusing refills once patients become desperate, or, in my case, neglecting to communicate very grave medical test results. He has cultivated a creepy cult-like atmosphere and his office staff act like callous snobs whose only skill is running a credit card machine. read more

I assigned myself to Dr. Sextons practice when I was living in Solana Beach, but never had to see him. I've since moved to Vista, but was in need of medical attention so I called Encinitas Family Care and they were able to get me in with Milu, his PA. Finding the office was a bit tricky, as I thought it was in the Vons shopping center, but after a couple of calls placed to the office and guidance from the office staff, I made it (it's just PAST the shopping center, by the way). The staff were understanding when I was a few minutes late and after checking in, I was brought back immediately. Milu is a delight. She was very attentive to my concerns and made me feel comfortable. I have yet to meet Dr. Sexton, And was considering switching PCP's to someone closer to Vista, but after my experience, I think it is worth the drive to be able to be seen at a doctors office that makes you feel like you're in good hands. Doctor Sexton has been my primary care provider for the past 6 years. He and his team provide VIP service at all times. This past weekend I became seriously ill with a chest inflammation. He's very knowledgeable (Ivy league -Yale), empathetic, caring, very respectful, a great listener, delivers his prognosis like your all-time favorite Professor, with superb eye-to-eye contact from a chalkboard which he uses to better illustrate or explain your problem, and his assessment of your solution. Doctor Sexton is great, loved having him as my doctor. Went for several years and he was awesome. Giving the office a lower review due to the staff. We recently switched insurance so couldn't see him any longer. I asked about the office's cash rate since I was willing to pay cash to stay as a patient and the woman was quite rude and said that they didn't take cash and it was illegal for them to take cash since I already had insurance. I asked to speak to the office manager and she reiterated the same thing. She also was quite rude and seemed put off that I even asked the question. I said fine and asked for the doctors email so I could thank him and say goodbye. They directed me to use the patient portal, which is something I couldn't log into and/or access. When I told them that they said they'd send me an email to re-login to my acct so I could email him. I never got it and still haven't been able to login. In fairness to them, they're probably right about the insurance thing. Although I know other doctors take cash patients (acupuncturists, etc) so not really sure what the law is. With all of that in mind, they really didn't need to be so rude. I was a patient of his for several years as was my wife. It would have been nice to end the relationship amicably, get my records and go to a new doctor. As it stands I wouldn't feel comfortable referring this office to anyone based on the way I was treated. Which is a bummer because as a doctor, he's fantastic. Hopefully I just caught them on a bad day and they don't treat everyone like this. read more

The receptionist was very rude over the phone and when I missed my appointment, instead of attempting to reschedule, she let me know there was a 50$ late fee and ended the conversation. When I called back to see about resceduling and she once again said there will be a 50$ late fee. Seems like they care more about late fees than their patients read more

I read all of the previous reviews and just do NOT understand. Well yes I do. No one called him on his bs.. This "Doctor" diagnosed my husband with " his ribs are poking him" when in fact he had Pancreatitis! I had to call and chew him out, through his nice sweet secretary, just to get this " doctor" to call my husband to tell him what the blood tests said! I have seen this "doctor" and find him self absorbed and to busy busy being cutesy to actually answer a question. On my first visit I had to listen to him talk, which was just him admiring himself, about things that had nothing todo with anything. read more

I was referred to Dr. Sexton after having gone to Scripps Emergency. I'm not really sure why. The office is very impersonal with the receptionist at a desk in the middle of the office with nowhere to talk in private. Anyone seated in the waiting room can hear everything you and the receptionist are saying. Very uncomfortable. I agree with Kristine B. He wanted to talk to me more than listen. I did tell him that I had symptoms of one issue, and had symptoms of another. He was more interested in Menopause and didn't pay attention to the other things I was saying. I was actually diagnosed (at City of Hope) with 2 unrelated CANCERS this year. Both were related to the symptoms that I was telling him. Neither one of which Dr. Sexton tested for or even seemed to care about. Had a simple Ultrasound been done, the thyroid cancer would have been easily detected. He just kept saying "your blood counts are fine!" even though I knew something was wrong. Also, not sure what Rick is supposed to do for anyone. You are sent to him after seeing the "Dr." and it's like trying to take a drink from a fire hose! All he wants to do is tell you how he rides his bike and how fit he is. No one gets a word in edgewise with him. His "area" of the office is open to the waiting room with no door. Again, anyone could hear what you and he are discussing, that is, if you can get a word in. I actually had to ask not to be sent to him anymore. After going to City of Hope for my cancer diagnosis and treatment I realized just how important GOOD CARE is and finding a doctor not just to LISTEN....but to DO the tests necessary to make sure there isn't anything else going on. By the way....City of Hope told me that my Thyroid Cancer appeared to have been there for a year. I was so upset with them because I literally told them, "I've been telling my GP that something wasn't right with my Thyroid, but he just kept saying that my counts were fine!" Really upsetting. No, never again will I step foot in this crazy office. read more

Dr. Sexton is a great physician in all areas: knowledgeable, comprehensive services to help you with numerous healthcare problems and questions, fabulous team of personnel, and in a great location. He has set up his office environment to feel calm and relaxing like a spa and not a white, sterile old style office. His entire team is friendly and very attentive. This is how all medical interactions should be. They see you on time for your appointment, take the time to listen to your needs, inquiry about other areas of your health to provide you with additional knowledge to take better care of yourself, and of course work with you to provide the best possible patient care. My husband and I have been patients of Dr. P. Sexton for atleast 5 years and have been very pleased with his professional team and his professional advise, and caring for all our health issues. Recently Dr. Sexton has helped me get off narcotic pain medication that I had been taking for 5 years due to a back injury. He recommended the right surgeon, Dr. Coufal spine specialist and in April this year I had a successful back surgery. Now after 4 months with the help of Dr. Sexton and his professional advise I am weeks away from NO more pain medication. My husband is so happy.
