Kumon makes him more of an independent learner, and lets him work at whatever level he is at. If he's lost or confused, there is help, he can go back, he can change direction of what he is studying with Kumon and then return to his problem area when he is ready. We have been there about 1.5 years. Susan Howell is the owner of the franchise and is not only a wonderful person, but is very hands on with what is going on. Most of the people working there are very good. We haven't had a problem except when my son was adjusting to the program - which took a few months. We have done both Math and Language Arts, and are currently only enrolled in Math due to time constraints. Susan is always willing to work with a family in whatever way will help the child, which is her main concern. When we arrive, the kids are usually focused, quiet, but generally happy. I don't see melt-downs or sad faces. I think that the crew is optimistic and positive in their interactions with the children, and it shows in their attitudes. Don't get me wrong - teaching discipline with young children is sort of an upward climb. But the folks at Mrs. Howell's Kumon treat discipline and good work with nothing but praise. I have not observed any problem or any hard sales of anything. I would say that the biggest problem we have encountered is with my son's giftedness, in that too much repetition is not really the best for most gifted children. However, Mrs. Howell is ready to accommodate to individualize the program for the child, and in our case, we are fortunate to benefit from her experiences as the mother of gifted children. Thank goodness we have a positive, educational choice with some truly professional people in Albuquerque!

The math program that APS adopted was not sufficient in developing numerical fluency, and Kumon has supplemented this need beautifully. My daughter is gifted in cognition and critical thinking, but her math calculation achievement test scores were average. I am so glad that my mother (a veteran teacher) suggested we start Kumon to scaffold her learning. She has managed to do well on curricular / district / state testing; and most importantly, she has confidence when solving math problems. On a personal note, Susan and her team are so very kind and patient with my family. Over the past three years, they have allowed us to go on hiatus while taking a long family trip, as well as cater how many pages we do a week depending how busy / hectic our lives are. Susan is extremely responsive to all my questions and emails. I am always saying how grateful we are to her! This evening my daughter had to stay late finishing up a test, and they couldn't have been kinder to us. I am so glad Albuquerque has this beneficial resource in our community.

She replied that they start ear training at a very young age of two to four years. I just happen to be in a position to test the theory through the Pajarito, Yamaha music school. And well, so far, my 5 year old is singing along great with her piano lessons, and my 2 year old chimes in "do re mi" right in tune. Yamaha is a world renowned technique that requires very specialized and certified teachers who follow a curriculum that has been developed over several decades and constantly upgrades to include the latest and greatest in music pedagogy. There is only one Yamaha music program in the region so people come from as far as Los Alamos to take lessons. This is more than just a piano playing class. This technique is catered toward developing the whole musician. They start with listening, and singing and playing all at once so that eventually the student can hear in his or her mind what the notes sound like before they play which opens a superb appreciation for music and can provide the foundation for exceptional performance if the kid decides to go down that path. There is also a large emphasis on playing as an ensemble which develops an ability to work with and respond to others. I was personally amazed at how fast my daughter went from having no concept of pitch to singing simple figures ("do re mi" etc.) precisely in tune in just one or two lessons. She now sings the pitches before she plays them on the piano prooving that she somehow grasps the language of music in a very real and internalized way.

My nephew has attended Pathways Academy for the past year as a fifth grader. He previously…read moreattended public school in Rio Rancho with disastrous results. This school has been absolutely perfect for our family since he was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum as being a child with High-Functioning Autism. He is not in a special education classroom and is not on an IEP and does not need to be at this school. The school treats each child as an individual and educates them to their specific needs and abilities. The school has a four-day school week and there is no homework being brought home. My nephew has been allowed to advance at his own level, even up to the next grade level, and does not have the stigma of being treated like he is in special education. All children are on a behavior management program where they are rewarded for good behavior and he is frequently going on field trips. Bullying is treated appropriately and I'm ecstatic to hear my nephew be able to actually say for the first time that he has "friends." He has sensory issues with clothes and is allowed to wear clothes that are comfortable to him. I like this school because my nephew is treated like a capable child and for the first time in his life is enjoying school and really likes his teachers. It's a pleasure to see him come home from school in a good mood and a lot of his behavioral issues at home have greatly decreased since he has been enrolled at this school. I would totally recommend this school to any parent who has a child on the autism spectrum and/or has ADHD/ADD, or has any type of learning disability.
