Located near the 18th & Vine Jazz District, the center is the result of a stunning $26 million transformation of the former Crispus Attucks School. Before the program began, Izzy Vivas, Director of Sales at the Zhou B Art Center, welcomed us and shared an overview of the center's mission and rebirth. Like many other attendees, I walked in not knowing anything about the space. By the time Izzy finished, it was clear that this isn't just a renovation--it's a full-scale cultural revitalization. The building houses several dozen artist studios spread across two floors, and a number of them opened their doors after the event so guests could explore the work. It was a great mix--painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media--and the artists were friendly, passionate, and eager to share their stories. The atmosphere felt both professional and welcoming. I hope more Kansas Citians take the time to experience the Zhou B Art Center, especially during First Fridays. It's an impressive space with a lot of creative energy, and it deserves to become a regular stop for anyone who cares about local art.

Me were able to visit with several of the co-op's artists to learn about their creative processes and works, from paintings, to photographs, drawings, collages, pottery, jewelry, and more. The hours on the website are Wednesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 5 PM. The gallery features a variety of art from local artists. We admired jewelry, pottery, paintings with various techniques, photography art and other works. They alternate the art every 60 days. They also have first Saturday art receptions that include live music and refreshments. The prices are were affordable for prints to frame and the original pieces were in the normal price range or less that are featured at local art shows. The gallery is peaceful and enjoyable. One of the owners spoke to us about the various art displayed and the art classes that they have to offer as well for various skill levels.
