We have had great experiences in the past in CA, NV, NY, MA, GA, OR, and WA, but we had a terrible one in NM. We had prepaid in full for our vehicle weeks before arriving in NM. When we got in, we did not see our name on the board to show where our car was parked, so we went inside to inquire at the counter. The man at the counter accused us of "being late" and directed us to a spot number where our pre-paid SUV supposedly was parked. Little did we know the man took it upon himself to direct us to a car that cost $100 extra PER DAY. To our surprise, when we dropped the car off, we were charged an extra $700 plus tax. When I asked why, the gentleman taking our car in said we had an upgraded vehicle. I don't know anything about cars, but our SUV was just regular to me. I mean, the passenger seat was broken, so it could not recline or scoot up or back, and I did not think it was anything special. Turns out it was so special, it was $100 extra per day. We battled with Hertz for months trying to figure out how we were upgraded at such a huge cost without being notified or our approval, and they had no answer. The customer service reps we spoke to told us that we should have realized our vehicle was an upgraded one, and we would not receive a refund. We will never rent from Hertz ever again.

Returning to Los Angeles, production notified me that I had a 4:30am pickup from hotel to airport. At 4:39am I called American Limo to check the status and they weren't able to find a reservation for me. Production made a mistake and didn't make a reservation. The nice gentleman answering the phone, Steve, quickly accommodated by telling me he would come pick me up himself. He arrived at 5:10am in snow and got me to my gate at 5:30am for my 6am flight. With one stop, halfway through, at the Apache Nugget Casino. Soon, they'll be offering shuttle van trips from Albuquerque to Sante Fe, so keep an eye out for that. One thing to mention, is that when you are arriving or departing from the Albuquerque area, pickup is near the Amtrak station, there is a sign near the road with the phone number. You can purchase tickets on the website, over the phone, and with the driver (bring cash). Currently the prices are $55 one-way. Another thing to keep in mind, is that the area in Albuquerque is a bit shady. There are a lot of homeless people near the bus station, and drug dealers. You can wait inside the Amtrak station, or Alvarado Station nearby. Also, the Amtrak station has clean restrooms, a small cafe, and free WiFi.

Who wants to walk a half-mile with a suitcase? They have always been on-time, friendly, and professional. On this last shuttle trip from ABQ to Santa Fe, the Southwest flight was late, and the driver called my husband and waited. So appreciative! I am bummed a few people had bad experiences, and yes, it sucks that there is no monetary refund, but we deal with that on airlines, too (if we don't pay an exorbitant amount for a refundable ticket). So word to the wise, book a shuttle close to your travel date and not too far advance. Bring cash for your driver for a tip, because it will be deserved!

In 2015 Bicycling Magazine recognized #ABQ as #17 among America's Top 50 Bike-Friendly Cities. Ever since that year back at the beginning of the last quarter of the last century when I lost my driving privileges as a result of enjoying driving too fast I've had the opportunity to watch ABQ's bike lanes, routes and paths increase dramatically. I used to ride from the room I rented in my Grandmother's home near Arroyo del Oso Golf course to UNM every morning and back again late every night. I usually took San Mateo out of a) innocence and b) lack of viable alternatives. Nowadays there are so many alternatives that are shorter, quieter and less smoggy I wouldn't dream of getting near a boulevard like San Mateo. Among my favorites trails are the Paseo del Bosque, Paseo del Nordeste, the North Diversion Trail, and the Paseo de las Montanas. Favorite bike routes include Claremont for quiet East/West traversing, Alvarado and San Pedro for North/South commutes. The growing number of Bicycle Boulevards thrills me! The bikes painted on the asphalt, the 18mph speed limits and the way they are generally on streets where traffic ought to favor bikes and pedestrians is a wonderful addition to our thoroughfares. My most used one is Silver Ave and I like Mountain Road a lot, too. I also look forward to seeing more and more Protected Bike Lanes like the ones the City has just painted downtown. Putting parked cars next to moving ones to protect bicyclists and pedestrians is a great move! Wherever you live in ABQ there's likely a good place for you to ride. If you're new to bicycle riding as a means of commuting for recreation please be aware that appropriate places to ride don't include sidewalks or riding against traffic. Finally, I tip my hat to ABQ Ride and ART. By adding a Bus I can dramatically extend my bike commutes, saving money and a tiny li'l piece of the planet at the same time. I look forward to expansion of both services.
