Let me be the first to say that I am just not one of those people who are uber fit. I dislike most…read morephysical activities, (i.e., walking, running, aerobics, doing anything that requires moving my joints). That's not to say that I don't do physical activity, I just am typically not a fan. That being said, I could completely see Baile Dance making me want to be (and stay) physically active and fit. I recently went to a Zumba class, which turned out to be taught by one of my favorite instructors, Enrique (also instructs at BodyWise Fitness). While I'm not particularly good at Zumba (my hips actually do lie), I find it to be so much fun. Knowing how great of an instructor Enrique is, I'm sure that the other instructors are probably just as great as he is. This studio opened fairly recently, so the studio is gorgeous. The interior is bright and large with light hardwood, large mirrors, a good sound system, a clean bathroom, a beautiful chalkboard wall, and ample storage for your things. One of the things I like most about it being a dance studio is that if you're like me, you sign up for classes at the gym, but you don't go to the rest of the gym. I'd rather just pay for what I'm getting. Overall, I'd give this new studio a try, you won't regret it. Plus, maybe you'll actually like exercise (or at the least dance) when you do.

I love that they offer classes of different intensity levels and styles for different fitness and comfort levels, and doing the ten class pass that you can use at any time was a great deal for me! I got a response immediately from who appeared to be the owner and invited me to come to a class for free to check it out. Classes are daily Monday-Friday at 7:30pm and Saturdays at 9am and are $5 per class or $60 per month for unlimited classes (I learned this from the nice girl at the door whom I checked in with). There were probably 50 ladies there for the class-it was hopping! The class was very fast paced and the instructor was so full of ENERGY! She bounced around the stage leading the class and then would wander around to give encouragement in the form of hilarious facial expressions and an occasional drill-sergeant-esque yell. She made it fun but also made sure we were working. Hard. If that scares you off, come back. The attendees were very diverse in fitness level. There were even young kids participating and a bad-A lady in a wheelchair who was knocking the moves out of the park. Seriously, if this white, red-headed chick (me) can do it, so can you. Come check it out-you won't be sorry! Note on the parking-by the time class was over, the parking lot was full and several cars were blocked by double parking. I'd suggest carpooling, parking across the street or getting there early. I can only see this place growing and getting busier!

I've been taking classes and performing in one of Thia's troupes (Luxor) for several years and they've been great years. Thia really knows her stuff. She has won competitions as well as judged some of the large belly dance competitions. Thia's studio and boutique are located in an industrial area. The studio can get pretty hot or cold since the space was formerly a warehouse. There is a lot of space in the studio. It can comfortably hold 15 ladies twirling veils. The full size mirrors along one wall let you see what you and your fellow dancers are doing (or not doing). There are classes for children as young as four and you are never too old to start taking classes I know a number of wonderful grandmothers who are great belly dancers. Body size is also irrelevant (although larger dancers may have trouble finding costumes-- but we still manage to do what we love). Perhaps my one complaint is that Thia can be a bit distracted and/or flaky. I attribute that to her having a lot on her plate and dealing with belly dancers can be a lot like herding feral cats. The boutique is a terrific place for getting all manner of belly dancing paraphernelia...whether it's an instructional video, costume, hip scarf, music, or any manner of shiny glorious awesomeness. Just a caveat: there isn't a large selection of plus sizes, but that seems to be a universal issue. If you're looking for a great way to shake the late winter blahs, the first Saturday of March is Springfest, the largest indoor belly dance festival in Utah. Thia puts this event on and it's always spectacular and tons of fun.

The dance rooms are spacious and have mirrors along the walls which are perfect for classes. The check-in area/registration desk space can get a little congested if there are a lot of people there at the same time. And the bathrooms are tucked back in the corner through some storage areas. It's a little dingy and has a "backstage" vibe. Parking can be dicey since it's in the Trolley Square complex. But there is an adjacent lot just across the street-just use the skybridge to walk across.

I've taken basic hip hop and hip hop choreography, and both have been a great way to step outside of my comfort zone as a dancer and learn to build muscle memory when it comes to choreography. The instructors are extremely talented and hold a wonderful space for students at any level. I have found that some of the hip hop classes do choreography to different genres, but nonetheless, the classes are engaging and entertaining! Single classes are a reasonable $16, but you can purchase multiple passes at a time at discounted rates and to get a feel of which classes align with you. I'd recommend Millenium to anyone looking for a high energy workout in a professional setting!
