You pad around barefooted at Epic, with plush mats covering the floor, recalling martial arts classrooms. I don't actually know why they make this choice but I really like it. It puts me in touch with my more animalistic self--jumping, rolling and crawling around without footwear is pretty liberating. I've taken dozens and dozens of classes here, and it's a challenging and thoughtful workout every single time. Everytime I come the circuit is different and also very difficult. How does the instructor come up with so many different moves? She's also positive, provides helpful and encouraging form corrections, and keeps our minds occupied while we countdown the seconds until the next exercise. I'm always totally spent by the end of the hour. The playlist is always fire, motivating me to push myself as hard as I can to the tempo of the epic music. I might just become a full fledged member of this gym, it's that great. Thank you Epic for being a part of my fitness journey I look forward to the most. read more

Pros: Fantastic workout, awesome coach, good people to workout with. Cons: I can't walk today and the AC is awful in the studio. Anytime I visit NYC I stop in for a class and every time I remember how great of a workout this is when it kicks my butt. A great mix of exercise, a good emphasis on warmup/cooldown, and the coach is great. I hope they get the ac issue fixed, the studio really gets hit with a ton of people. If I could give Epic and it's amazing Crew 10 stars, I would! I transitioned from a steady kickboxing workout to Hiit about 2 months ago. I was getting complacent in my workouts, and really stopped seeing any results. Within 2 short months at Epic I have more definition, and am much leaner shedding inches/weight every week. The coaches here really and truly love what they're doing, which in turn shows through with it's members. They're super friendly and always make you feel right at home They're open to chatting about your day, fitness goals, everything. I really don't think you can find anything like Epic Hybrid here in NYC. It incorporates Muay Thai, BJJ, cardio and strength training all under one roof. The rubber dungeon (that's what I like to call it ) gives you resistance in everyday home exercises. It definitely kicks it up a notch. I took the Grynd class at the 54th Street location last month. Initially I was hesitant because it is a barefoot class, but there was limited high-impact moves (in terms of jumping, etc.) - so all was good on that end. I liked the concept and instructor, but the class I took was a bit low-energy (it was 6:30am with 5-6 people). My only other critique is to have the instructor show us any modifications prior to the start since the time goes by quickly. Only one shower, but I was the only one getting ready for work after my class, so that wasn't an issue! I'd try this studio again. read more

You have top athletes coaching you and a showing you how to perform complicated moves properly. The classes are small so you get a ton of personal attention and they welcome all skill levels. EPIC is one of the best gyms I have ever been too and would give it 6 stars if it was possible! I have been going to EPIC for 3 months now and have noticed a SIGNIFICANT change in my strength, endurance and figure. I started to get back into fitness in late January and tried everything from Kickboxing, weight lifting at NYSC, spinning, boxing, personal training and other fitness classes and then I DISCOVERED EPIC. After 3 months of searching for the right gym, EPIC was the one gym that has truly CHANGED my life. I had bought a Livingsocial deal and after 4 classes, I was hooked! I lost approximately 15 pounds before EPIC and then once I started EPIC, I have become more toned and sculpted than I ever have been in my life and have lost an additional 15 pounds. The set-up of the classes makes this gym one of the best. EPIC is like having a personal trainer for an entire hour except you are with a group of people (14 max in a class). Throughout the entire class you work with a partner and motivate one another to work harder. Each class has about 8 stations that you perform a workout at for approximately 45 seconds to 1 minute and then rotate. Workouts vary from TRX bands to burpees to kettlebells and they even have monkey bars! Each class works the entire body especially the core. Best part of going to class is seeing the same people on a consistent basis as if you are a team. Each day has a different focus and changes each month which is great as you are consistently changing your routine which makes class that much more interesting! I have seen a lot of trainers over the past 6 months however, none compare to Alex and Julia. Both are very motivating instructors and explain how to properly perform each exercise. They know you by name and make you feel very welcomed in class and know when to push you when you need it most. I attend classes at least 4-5 times a week and love the feeling after a great workout. The price you pay for a class is worth every dollar as you are truly getting the best workout in 45 - 50 mins. Be prepared to leave class soaked as if you just got out of a swimming pool! This gym changed my life. That may sound a bit dramatic but it's the absolute truth. After battling depression and putting on a significant amount of weight in 2013 I felt lost and hated looking at myself in the mirror. I knew I needed a change. I tried going to a traditional gym and working with a personal trainer at another but it just didn't work for me. I was bored and felt like I wasn't using my full potential to lose the weight and feel the way I wanted to. Fast forward to June of 2014 I was wandering through my new neighborhood when I spotted Epic and their advertising outside. I was intrigued so I went up to check it out. When I got in I met the manager Rachel who was incredibly helpful and really nice. I signed up for a 10 pack to try it out. My first class was with Samantha and it kicked my butt! Noticing I was new, Samantha made a point to introduce herself and get to know me. I was intimidated by the class at first because people there were in much better shape than me, but having the instructor come over and talk to me before class made me feel at ease. I enjoyed the people in the class and the small but welcoming community. I found exactly what I needed, when I needed it. One of the great things about Epic are the specialties and varying disciplines that the Instructors bring from Julia's gymnastics background to Brendan's muy Thai history. The workouts have these specialties infused into the workout. Not only are the instructors awesome, they work with you and to what your body is capable of. It's not looked down upon to be doing a modified version of an exercise because they know you'll be able to get there eventually. It's mid November and I'm stronger, leaner and more confident than I have been in years. I owe it To this gym and the superb staff. read more

This. Place. Is. AWESOME. I have friends who've gone here and I've been dying to go for a while, but it's a wee bit out of my price range. I jumped when I saw a month of unlimited classes on Gilt City and now I'm kinda screwed because I'm already trying to figure out how I can fudge my budget to keep coming. :) I've attended three full weeks now and it is totally bonkers how much of a difference it's already made. The classes are BRUTAL, but no one is going to shame you if you take a second to catch your breath or grab a sip of water. Everyone is so badass, though, you wind up pushing to your max just trying to keep up. The people that come here seem to be more interested in strength and power and ability than just looking "bikini ready" and it's crazy inspiring. This place is VERY into obstacle course races, so most of what you'll do here will prep you in a major way to participate in your next Spartan. The classes are the same for 4 weeks (or maybe 6 weeks?), so every Monday will be the same, every Tuesday, and so on. It gives you a chance to improve upon certain skills and watch yourself get better and faster before they switch it up. Different classes have different time schemes (like 30 seconds on, 15 off, or longer 90 second holds), but you will SWEAT SWEAT SWEAT no matter the day. I find them all to have a great ratio of cardio to strength training. I haven't disliked any of the instructors, but I'm really partial to Julia and Caitlin. They're all super well rounded and knowledgeable athletes in their own right, and their tips and tricks have helped me conquer things (like handstands!) I was too scared to attempt just three weeks ago. Can't recommend it highly enough. Hope to be able to keep coming back! read more

I am so happy I found this place AND that their class times / location works perfectly for me. I live quite far from the location, but work very close, so I need a morning class that doesn't force me to wake up before 6am and from which I can get to the office before 10 - and voila! There was EPIC! But it's more than that - I also insisted on excellent trainers who know what they're doing, positive energy from the people around me, and a workout that will kill me but not be overly long. Having come from an amazing women-only boot camp experience in Hong Kong that became extremely near and dear to my heart, I feared I'd never find anything that worked for me again - and then.. yes, there was EPIC! I have been going from 4-6 days a week since I started a few weeks ago, and can't imagine changing that anytime soon. But for all that is good (which outshines the bad), here are the bad: Yes, it gets damn hot in here and you will SWEAT, esp when it's humid. That sweat (of yours and others) is all over the rubber mat floors, which we all work out on barefoot. You will slip and slide as you try to do head stands, bear crawls, jungle gym pushups, etc. Hopefully you will not get fungus (hasn't happened to me yet, but I fear it every time!). There are only two showers, and I always feel bad about taking more than the most minimal time. I will race in and race out, and do most of my getting ready outside. Fortunately I'm not embarassed easily. The online system seems a bit difficult - their is a policy that you auto-renew your membership option every month, and can only change that with 30 days notice. Seems harsh, though apparently in practice, this issue can be bypassed. I don't think that practice and policy should be disconnected though. In the end of the day, I am super happy that I joined. My time slot is fortunately never signed out (so far, touch wood), AND they are opening a second location (hooray!) come July! If you are a masochist, then this is the spot for you. read more

Everyone else pretty much summed it up, but this place is amazing. If you're considering trying it out, don't think...do! Do it if you want to challenge yourself, do it if you want to make major (great) changes to your body, do it if you want a fantastic support team, do it if you want to feel, strong, beautiful, and powerful! I tired through Groupon in March. At the time I was doing Krav Maga and was on the verge of putting down $700.00 for 20 classes. Once I tired Epic I instantly decided that my money could be better spent. I was hooked! I currently do an unlimited membership and I can't imagine a life without Epic. By the end of the week my body is dying for rest, but I always come back on mondays recharged and ready for more :) Thanks to the entire Epic team! Small gym with really attentive and challenging classes. This place is clean, convenient to get to (near the E, M, 6 train), and will 100% deliver a tough and worthwhile workout. I have tried The Grynd, The Blast, Tone and Power, and Dynamic Core. They have more detailed descriptions on their website regarding these classes, but I would say The Grynd is the best overall well rounded class. No Dumbbells or machines at Epic, mostly kettle bells, TRX, boxes, ab rollers, pull up bars, and body weight exercises. I have had most of the instructors but Julia is the best! Her awesome bod shows that she's doing something right in the realm of fitness, and she always gives good corrections and attention to form. Best of all, leave your sneakers at home. No shoes required. I would suggest bringing your own towel and water. There's also a line for the showers in the morning so keep that in mind if you plan on getting ready for work here. read more

I was introduced to Epic via Groupon, I was looking for a kickboxing class to change up my workout and instead found Epic. As a child I was never able to do monkey bars, no arm strength or real athletic ability, so I would just watch other kids swing across the bars in the playground. So when I read that they had a class called the MBG - Monkey Bar Gym, I was intrigued. I know, I know, fulfilling my Monkey Bar ability as an adult not really all that impressive or an 'epic' feat? But didn't have many reason not to try and I couldn't find that kickboxing deal. Not going to lie the first class was a little embarassing and hard to keep up. Gross tidbit, I was trying so hard to keep up with the burpee class, the friction between my feet and the mat caused blistering and then a good chunk of my skin ripped off *eww* But thankfully that's as embarassing as it gets. The class is no joke as long as you are committed. I consider myself somewhat fit being as I recently took up running early this year, but if I was wasn't there would have been no way I could keep up with Alex (the dude won the most recent Spartan Race). Hopefully these hybrid classes will improve my running times and overall fitness. I have subsequently been to 3 other class since, oddly they always fall on Burpee days, but I heard they do some other core and strengthening classes that are also great. Alex is hardcore but don't underestimate Julia either, both are awesome. Really glad I found Epic and as far my monkey bar progress, not quite there yet but I did manage to do my 1st pull up last week! Score! read more

This is a little hidden gem in NYC. I have always been one of the stronger ones in class at my previous gym but this place puts me to shame in a good way! The quick pace, constant change, and great coaching makes this gym stand out. Everyone is motivating towards each other and we all have built great bonds. Its not intimidating at all and you walk out wanting more (if you can actually walk!) The Manager keeps the gym running smooth and the coaches keep your attention; always push you to do YOUR best and no one else's. This is definitely NYC's best kept secret!! I just started attending classes about 2 weeks ago. They offer new students an unbelievable deal -- $19 for 3 classes for the Monkey Bar Gym - and they are totally awesome!! Class sizes are small and manageable (12-15 ppl) and most exercises are done in pairs with another member, which helps to keep you motivated and on track. They're all functional movements which are fun and done in a Tabata-like fashion - 20 seconds on/10 sec rest - which ensures a challenging and high intensity workout. The instructor (Alex) is very engaging and helps push you that extra mile when you're energy starts to dip after several intense rounds. What impressed me the most besides the helpful and friendly staff - were all of the other people in the class. Everyone there is super cool and friendly and really welcoming. On my first class - 2 girls introduced themselves to me and made me feel like I'd easily fit in. Walking in to a predominately martial arts school could be somewhat intimidating and Epic really sets the bar for creating a great engaging, energetic vibe and welcoming environment! I'm definitely going to be attending these classes on a regular basis and definitely suggest anyone looking for a good workout or just looking to change it up - to give it a try!! read more

Emily's the absolute best! I've taken almost 10 classes with her, and in each class she provides a clear, proper demonstration of the exercises with a great focus on form throughout the class. I would also highly recommend trying out any of Emily's horsepower classes. Sarah is good too as she has the same energy and attention as Emily. I would avoid taking Nate's class though -- his clarity for instructions and his attention to form aren't quite on par with Emily or Sarah. This studio somewhat has a focus on obstacle course training (spartan / tough mudder), so some of the exercises are really fun and would include things like traversing through monkey bars and climbing ropes. Class sizes are small (I think max 16 people). Their workouts are all well thought out, and the exercises are very innovative/unique/elaborate (unlike other studios whose workouts could easily just be done in an apartment gym / at home). read more

This gym has been a great find by my wife. We started in March and have been hooked since. Living in Hoboken, it's worth the after work workout to wait and come back home. It's been a GREAT push each work out and the difference in the classes and instructors gives great variety in their styles, all of which are great. The other amazing aspect of this gym is the clientele the draw. The people that take classes alongside you are great. Epic is a very challenging HIIT style class where you will definitely sweat a lot. The instructors are very encouraging and are tremendous, qualified athletes themselves. Epic offers great rewards and incentives to their customers. Very welcoming environment and a top workout in the city. Definitely recommend trying out the Combine class to sample all of the different timed interval sets. The studio on 54th street is much more spacious and modern than the one on 38th street. The workout at Hybrid is way more intense than your average workout (more so than something say, Barry's Bootcamp). I'd say it's Intermediate to Advanced in difficulty, and will be tough for beginners who haven't had similar type of classes. Part of the reasons is there's an emphasis on continuous movements to keep your heart rate up (instead of resting for minutes, you do burpees or mountain climber in between stations). The classes I've been to consist of a series of ~8 stations that you rotate through every 30-60 seconds, with movements like lifting a bean bag, Pull-ups with TRX, swinging a kettle ball, etc. For most stations, the instructor offers different difficulty levels (Level 1,2,3) that you can try. The movements do change every month or so, and the emphasis of the class varies each day of the week (Classes are named "Tone and Power", "Blast", "Gyrd", "Dynamic Core", etc.) read more

Serious gym using functional movements for strength, endurance and mobility. The staff is very knowledgeable and does take individual capabilities into account. The classes are a tough workout . This gym is in a small space equipped with some ingenious devices much more effective than free weights or machines. Proper technique is stressed as much more important than maxing out. This place offers several types of exercises but I go for the hybrid training which is a cutting edge interval training workout. I started about 4 months ago and can comfortably say I am in the best shape I have been in since high school where I played three sports. They offer morning (starting at 7:10am), afternoon, and evening (last class at 9:10pm) classes to accomodate for everyone's schedule. All the trainers know what they're doing and really want you to push yourself each class. The only thing I would say could make this place better (hard to do) is offer a 6:30am class for people who have to be into work early! The workouts are about 45-50 minutes, intense, and will leave you looking and feeling great. I love coming here and cannot say enough good things. I recommend it to everyone I know. I tried out Epic Hybrid a year ago via Classpass and remembered that I really enjoyed my session there. Fast forward one year I saw they were featured on Groupon so I bought a 10 pass pack to get back into the swing of things. The first class back kicked my butt and left me sore for a few days. I've taken tone&power, grynd, and dynamic core so far, and I think that Grynd is my favorite. Its 60 seconds of quick pace movement followed by 10 seconds of "rest" which is just enough time to transition into the next station. Every circuit works out every inch of your body so you quickly learn which parts you need to focus more on. The instructor gives you different variations on each exercise base on your skill level and it's important to go at your own pace and skill so that you can build up to the more advance moves. I always leave the class with sweat beads dripping down and that's a good thing! Oh, classes are done barefoot so don't worry too much about footwear. The 54th street location has one shower in each gender's bathroom and provides towels, razors, tampons, and scrunchies! read more

Great workout! Exactly what I needed: relatively short (45-minute long) class that gives a great result! So far I've attended 2 classes, but I've already purchased a pass for 10 more. You're going to sweat after the first 10 min! Each class has 3 levels of difficulty, including a level for beginners. Instructors are great, they explain every exercise for avoiding any injuries, and during the class, they correct your mistakes. Music is the best. When I think I don't have the energy to finish an exercise, their awesome music really helps. read more

I have experienced every class and I can honestly say each and every class is intelligent, thoughtful and highly effective with professional and caring instructors. Expensive... in the sense that I have to buy new clothes. Since training at the school, I've put on the a decent amount of muscle. I hulked out of one of my work shirts in the middle of a client meeting last week. In all seriousness, been to a couple of other schools in the city. The rates here are pretty fair. There is a lot of focus on technique and learning things right. The people and staff are all very friendly. Pros: - You will get fit. The workouts are intense. - As with any martial arts, you learn discipline and gain greater self-confidence - If you are ever in a situation where you have to protect yourself from a physical altercation. The training is better to have than not. - Teachers and students are all pretty approachable. Warnings: - This isn't anything close to the cardio-kickboxing class you took at NYSC so don't join expecting it to be. - During class the instructors will push you to your breaking point. Be mentally prepared to work hard. Even physically, I know the first two weeks were very hard for me because my body was not use to it. Just remember it, it get easier after a while. With that said. Really disappointed with management. I came to the city for one month and heard great things about this gym. Did a trial and loved the instructors but after speaking with someone at the front desk, thought I was just purchasing the $200 for a month deal. When I checked my bank account, they had set me up on a monthly enrollment and I had no idea. I wrote multiple emails asking for my money back since I hadn't been there in over 3 weeks so it was clear I was not utilizing the membership and they had no sympathy. I love this gym and wish I had discovered it sooner! My favorite class is Dynamic Core on Fridays and I've really liked Sarah and Cassidy as coaches. The energy here is great - the coaches are positive and supportive and always emphasize proper form to avoid injury. I really like that they provide at least 2 or 3 options for each exercise at different levels and never pressure you to try a more advanced option if you're not ready for it or just not feeling it that day. I bought a 10 pack from Groupon but will definitely be purchasing another package when I use up my classes. read more

For the last few years I have been completely neglecting my upper body. I go to the gym, but I focus on cardio for the most part. Couldn't do any pull ups or pushups or nothing. Barely could lift 40lbs. It was time to make a change! I bought the livingsocial deal, and signed up no problem (no attitude at all, which is one of those risks you assume with buying deals). I have been taking the epic hybrid classes for a little over a month now and they have been kicking my ass so bad and it is just what I need. The class is set up with a bunch of stations, and you do 1:30min or 30 seconds a station, depending on the circuit. It keeps it from getting boring, and every month the circuit changes up. Each station has 3 variations, "easy", advanced, impossible. Notice I put "easy" in quotations! It has been struggle! Classes are kept small at 12 people or so, and there are a variety of people at different physical levels: weaklings like me, and folks who can stand on 1 finger upside down and do a pushup. Somehow it is not intimidating. Everyone is nice and accommodating. Instructors make sure you work it, but don't punish or humiliate you if you're visibly struggling. Everyone starts at the bottom at some point in their life and they seem to understand this. It's good though. I leave the class feeling worked and the first few classes were especially crippling. But I am noticing results already. I can lift a lot more then I used to, and my running speed has increased despite the fact I have not really ran all winter. Really happy I found this place! I am too short to reach the monkey bars on the ceiling. Alas. read more

This place is the REAL DEAL. I go home after every class EXHAUSTED! in a good way :) they really know how to kick your butt over here. Brendan, Alex, Julia and Samantha are all awesome teachers, Each have their own style but all extremely motivating. Good music and great atmosphere. I just signed up for their spartan training run and I did my first one yesterday with Brendan I could barely walk afterwards! It was so challenging I definitely felt accomplished when it was over. I don't even know how to describe how great the Hybrid Training -MBG classes are. Daz and Alex ROCK! I'm doing my first Spartan Race in a few weeks and I feel really confident that I'll make it through the obstacles . I have never taken such an intense class that works your entire body. The instructors really make sure to push you to your optimal potential. I highly suggest trying the classes out. The night classes fill up SUPER quick, so if you can make it to the early morning or afternoon classes try those out first. No matter what you are going to get the best strength work out you've ever experienced. read more

After recently moving to NY, I went 'gym shopping' to find the perfect place to get my workout fix. I didn't just want nice machines and kiel's in the locker room.. I wanted to be in a place with ENERGY. I sampled a plethora of places and Epic came out on top. It's the culmination of a couple guys that are truly passionate about fitness and an innovative circuit workout regimen that keeps classes fresh and exciting. You will get your ass kicked and it will feel like punishment, but at the end of it, you'll want to do it again. If you like high intensity and want to get fit and toned, this is your spot.
