Pretty fancy and you do get perks in their gift store if you join their monthly membership. It's a contract that you have to keep and if you cannot maintain that contract then you need to pay some dues to back out of the contract. Facilities are very nice and smells very clean. The women's lockers have plentiful of lockers that don't require a lock. They have a 4 digit code system that renews every time you use one. That's how secure the lockers are. There are nice showers equipped with shampoo and bodywash. There are toiletries like tampons, hair ties, and lotion for your liking. Many clean bathrooms that are very well maintained. One thing I like about this equinox is that there is a sauna by the showers where you can get to chill and detox. It's pretty spacious with different aisles for many people if it does become crowded and equipped with a shower to rinse off excess body odor or sweat. Gym equipment is very organized and have an account where you log in your credentials to see your status and progress when it comes to your fitness regime. READ THIS BEFORE JOINING EQUINOX. Let me preface this by saying I am not a member of Equinox (well now I am but read this first before joining. I'm thinking about getting a membership, and my friend told me about a robot massage service called Aescape, which is located inside some Equinox locations within the city. I went to Equinox to try the massage, and my wife tempered my expectations, so I really wasn't expecting much. I was greeted by the front desk (by the way, the Equinox is inside the mall--took me a minute to find it). The receptionist checked me in for Aescape, asked for my apparel size, and then told me where the room was. Since there was only one person at the front desk, she wasn't able to walk me there, which I understood. It was easy to find--just up the stairs and through the door that says "Spa." Pro tip: If you're thinking about getting a membership, Aescape comes with a day pass, so you can use the gym after your massage. This thing is straight out of the future--truly. It's a massage bed (that is quite comfortable) with two robotic arms and an iPad in front of you. You control everything from the screen--the massage type, pressure, music, focus areas, and even the setting (I chose a rainforest). This thing blew me away. The massage was damn good. And for $60? No tip required, plus access to Equinox? What a deal. I used the sauna and locker rooms after, got a workout in, and then went straight to the front desk to ask how to get a membership. I'm sold. My only complaint? Equinox members should get a discount on their massages through the app or something. It'd be a nice incentive to sign up (though, clearly, I didn't even need that to be convinced). read more

I took three classes back to back here and it was a very relaxing experience. The room was 95 degrees on purpose. Might be better when it gets colder, but to me, it was too hot. Good thing they have the eucalyptus towels! The Pilates class with Beth is excellent! Loved the circle for toning the thighs! The Best Stretch Ever class is incredible! I love Q the instructor and the mobility stick! Finally, the vinyasa yoga class in the heated room will give you a transcendent experience! Spiritual beyond belief. Not sure why the place gets low reviews. I've been coming here for 2+ months and I've had zero issues. There were a couple of times when I felt the shower water going from hot to cold and back to hot, but I've never encountered straight up cold water in the showers (maybe it was worse in the past?) This location is significantly less busy than the SoHo ones (SoHo and bond st.). And in my experience, if you have a flexible work schedule and come between 9-12 or 3-5 it's basically empty. I've also come around 5-6pm when it's busy and even then it doesn't feel super crowded (except the lockers: at peak hours it does feel like there aren't any available lockers and the towel shelf tends to run thin). The lounge area is nice if you're "working" but not really and just need to hop on your laptop here and there :D read more

This is my second review of this Equinox Brookfield location (see my September 2016 review) and not much has changed since the first one in 2016. I rejoined in 2021 after it reopened after the COVID lockdown. To be honest, I've been thinking of cancelling my membership because the level of service at this location continues to deteriorate. If you are thinking of joining this location there are a few things you should know. There is definitely a gap between the sales pitch you will get and reality. Here are a few points I think are worth mentioning: 1. The men's locker room is a pig pen. During peak times it is way too crowded and messy. Guys bumping into each other, guys routinely leaving soiled towels on the floor, messy sinks and waits for a shower. 2. The reason for the crowded men's locker room is that it is too small. There is a smaller more upscale locker room (nicer finishes, bananas and apples, etc.) within the men's locker room with a private door. If you are willing to pay an additional monthly fee you can use the upscale inner sanctum. Hence the general locker room is smaller. This upsell is typical of the Equinox chain - lots of add ons for an additional fee. 3. There are chronic problems with the hot water in the men's locker room. I wish I had a nickel for every cold shower I took or had to let the water run for some 10 minutes until it got hot. 4. The TVs never work. If you would like to watch TV while you workout forget it. The TVs on the various cardo machines have been out of service for months - too many to count. Management says they are working on a fix but they have been saying that for several months. 5. The sales associate will tell you about the various group classes. Sounds great until you attempt to sign up for one and it is fully booked. This will happen a lot, or the class will be during a time when you won't be able to attend. 6. The Equinox chain is owned by Related Companies, a private equity firm (i.e. real estate developer and Hudson Yards owner Steve Ross). Need I say more. Private equity firms take no prisoners and will squeeze every penny out of a portfolio company. read more

I am not sure what all the negative comments are about. Sure it's not perfect but this is def one of the best equinox locations in nyc (I've tried a bunch but this is closest to my new job). I came to try this gym out with my boyfriend today and was not impressed. This location is located on the second level of the Brookfield Place mall, and it is very small. There are enough machines to go around, but I was expecting a much larger space. Most of the machines were standard brands like Life Fitness and Precor. The locker room smelled kind of funky and the cycling studio smelled SO bad it was repugnant. It definitely does not live up to the Equinox name. Also! There is no cell phone reception (data, texts, etc) in the gym. read more

Let's disregard the exorbitant prices for a moment ($225/mo with $300 initiation fee). This is a nice gym. No two ways about it. They have state of the art new machines (including this weird ladder climbing one which was a crazy workout, as well as one meant for skiers). They have all sorts of classes, with a dedicated yoga studio (with sneaker cubbies!), a big group class studio, and a boxing room. Toward the back is a giant open area perfect for personal training or just warming up. There's also a padded stretching area in the middle that gets super crowded. They even provide you with bands and ankle weights! There's a lounge in the front with computers and WiFi you can use. In terms of weightlifting, they have a bunch of flat benches, one decline, and a couple of squat racks. There was only one powerlifting platform. And that's where the real problem with this gym lies. The clientele is mostly beautiful blonde women in their pushup sports bras who wear makeup while working out, and are somehow tan in winter. They're all working on their glamour muscles. Nobody really seemed to be working out all that hard. Plus it's a new location, so the equipment is also brand new, which means the knurling on that Olympic bar was fresh and tore the hell out of my hands (even with callouses). That was enough to convince me not to join (well, that and the fact that one month here was basically the cost of an entire year at NYSC). Also, they don't have a TRX system or any real place to do pullups that aren't part of another machine, which is annoying. They have these fake TRX systems that are just anchored high up into the wall. Oh also, even after you tell them you're not interested, they'll just keep emailing and calling you. read more

I don't always overpay for gym memberships, but when I do, I splurge at Equinox. Not really because I need a steam room or eucalyptus towels or to work out alongside models, but because this location is so convenient. And being locked in for a year means I have no option to turn back. Lucky me! For the price, I wish they offered more of the classes I love at after-work hours, but such is life. The app makes it easy to check-in and book classes like Cycle Beats and Hot Yoga. They also offer some corporate discounts so be sure to leverage those if you can. read more

I've been a member of this place ever since it opened. While its opening was not without its problems, this is a pretty solid gym. The gym has lots of space, plenty of cardio machines, and a decent amount of benches. The staff is also friendly and helpful. My only criticism of this place is that I think the layout is strange and has too much wasted space (for example, too much space is wasted on a seating area that no one uses). Further, if your focus is weight lifting then this is not the best place-- more space appears to be dedicated to cardio machines. Ok, so the prices for this place are definitely high so the expectation bar will naturally be set high. Cons so far: 1) Hours of facility - the gym closes at 10pm. there are many bankers who work in the same building as this gym that do not sign up because they want to go to the gym between 10pm - 12am and the gym is already closed. Equinox, is there any way you can accommodate your audience more? 2) Need to sign up for classes in advance which has its pros and cons. One thing to know is that classes can fill up fast, so you might be on the waitlist or not get a chance to sign up if you are not doing so when the class opens to sign up Highly recommend using the App to sign up for classes and to track the workouts you have accomplished during your tenure. Staff is overall very friendly. Space: Modern feel and very clean facility. You always see staff members cleaning the equipment during the day. Locker rooms are also clean and its fairly easy to find an open locker. Lockers do have lock codes on them so no need to bring you own lock. Equipment: Towels provided. New and high end treadmills. There are a ton of cardio machines and I have found an open treadmill at any hour so far. The gym also has some of the fancy outdoor style treadmills that are used at Barry's Bootcamp which are claimed to be softer on your knees. Classes: Cycling - I enjoy the spinning classes and the competition that the Pursuit classes offer. I am surprised that instructors are not reminding students how to use the bike and reminding them of what muscles to focus in on during the work outs. I've experienced enough of this in the past that I am able to remind myself of these techniques, but for beginners and even for experienced cyclers, these can be nice reminders and good safety measures. I've sampled and enjoyed a Barre and MetCon 3 class. These have met expectations of the descriptions described on the class schedule. I feel ridiculous but I also feel very pampered and VERY clean. Brookfield Place is one of the best locations for sure. It's also in a mall so extra points there for pre- and post-workout activity selection. The showers and locker room in general is spacious and so clean. They're not uber private and just have frosted glass dividers on one side of each stall (a full wall on the other side of the stall. I use this gym at least four times a week and I am also an executive member and use a trainer. The staff is professional and more than anxious to help achieve your goals. My one major concern is that it has become way too crowded. The management had permitted the membership to skyrocket so that at peak hours it's tough to complete circuits. I love Equinox Brookfield Place. It is my home Equinox (though I also go to Tribeca and Soho). It has everything: best view in the city, boxing studio, cycling studio, hot yoga studio, lounge area, great showers, and friendly employees. The showers are also bigger than Equinox Tribeca. I shouldn't give away the secret but the first two showers on the right in men's locker room have the best water pressure. Downsides: I would say the floor plan of the locker room is a little tighter than other Equinox locations. The equipment is very cardio centric. Missing a few machines that other locations have (off the top of my head- hack squat machine, standing calf raises, only a few pieces of equipment for abs). All of these are outweighed by the biggest upside which is that it is in Brookfield Place, so you've got a ton of options for post workout activities, and in the summer you can run along the Hudson River. read more

How on earth does this Equinox have just three stars? Even that badly outdated club at Park and 33rd does better than that. I loved this club so much, in spite of the lack of pool, I started to fantasize about living in Battery Park City and getting a much bigger apartment for what I pay in the E 60s. That's not practical, of course, as my life is really uptown /midtown. But this club blows you away from the moment you enter. 1) Gorgeous wood at the front desk and behind the Juice Press. 2) Views of the Oculus from the lobby and lounge area, views of the Hudson /Marina from the weight room. 3) The largest mat space I've seen at any Equinox (and I've been to over 20, maybe 25). The machines are spaced far apart, creating an experience of privacy and expansiveness. I was there on a Saturday afternoon and it was DEAD. This is of course because so many who work in FiDi exercise there and don't come in on the weekends. I hear it gets pretty crowded during the week, but by the looks of the main space, you can still get on machines and they have a phalanx of treadmills. Even as anal and Type A as finance professionals tend to be, I cannot imagine there's a time you cannot get on an elliptical or treadmill. 4). Locker room: The color scheme is different from every other Equinox in the city. Brookfield has the built in lockers, the same as all the rest, but they're a soft beige. The showers are all earth tones. It's like a spa. 5) Steam room: It smells like flowers! I've never been in a steam room in my life that smelled like this. Not eucalyptus. It's some other floral and it's just delicious. Not as hot as Flatiron (the best in the city), but it's reasonably hot and I felt so much better after 20 minutes. 6) Like W 76th and Sports Club UWS, there is ample study/reading space. I love the furniture and the decor (terariums and books behind the long couch next to the two iMacs with modern lamps: short wood geometrical base and large cream cylindrical shade). The yoga room is nice and big but looking over the offerings, I wouldn't take class there. I'm not a Vinyasa girl. Serena Tom, a popular teacher who dates the Wilhelmina model and elite trainer Chris Chang, teaches "athletic yoga." That's power yoga and I don't do that but if you do, she's there. The hours are shorter because like E 53rd, this caters to the business crowd. One of the nicest Equinox clubs I've visited. read more

I was visiting from out-of-town and wanted to try this well-known NYC gym (which, also, was near hotel). I do pilates, so hotel scheduled a private pilates session with Tara. When I called to speak to the pilates manager, Sara Bogle, the guy on the phone said "Who?" He had never heard of her. Eventually, I was able to get a message to Sara. Then, when I arrived at gym, I had to fight to get in as I was not a member and they had no clue what to do with me. Anyhow, I made it to my pilates session, which went pretty well. I also enjoyed view out over the Hudson. Despite the obstacles, I decided to give it another try, signing up for a 2nd private session. Again, ran into same troubles at front desk. A lady named Sada came out (a supervisor?). She was clueless; demanded that I either show her an email confirmation of my pilates appointment, or go back to the hotel to get a photo ID before she would let me enter the facility. This is Equinox? TSA at LaGuardia is friendlier. All of this is quite startling in view of one other fact: on a previous trip to NYC, I had scheduled a pilates session with, but had to cancel at the last minute because I became ill on the flight to NYC. When I called Equinox, to ask for a refund, they refused citing their "health club rules." I couldn't believe it, how rigid they were...... and yet, their own staff have very low standards for how they perform their jobs. Not at all what I had expected for Equinox. read more

Upon my visit to this gym I was greeted by a welcoming front-desk attendant and given an informative tour by a very friendly membership advisor. I don't fully understand as to why such a majority of Yelp reviewers complain about the membership dues of Equinox gyms: how else can a high-end gym manage and/or make profit without a membership fee on par with its space and services, when it provides its members with group and personal trainers, amenities, and so on. Having said that, is the space of this club absolutely spectacular in order to give me the incentive to work out daily or every other day? Well the answer is yes and no: it's a nicely designed space, seemingly well maintained, but nothing absolutely breathtaking about the design at the same time: cool, safe, contemporary but also a bit generic. Understated and elegant? Well yes. To be singular, original and cutting edge, however, perhaps a member should encounter an Anish Kapoor sculpture or a cut-off painting by Lucio Fontana. (Wait, I forgot, this is not the Guggenheim Museum or MoMA. But then again, a painting by Fontana can be present at a Tom Ford boutique, for instance.) And where was the DJ to vitalize the space with the energy of music? Nonetheless, the context of this gym, namely Brookfield Place with its picturesque Winter Garden, seemed to make up for the lack of particular originality within the gym itself. To arrive at the fitness club via a juncture of a shopping center was a bit paradoxical: I felt elated to have exited the cacophony of Manhattan, only to realize that it was an arena characterized by the platitude of suburbia. Returning to the raison d'etre of a fitness center: an outstanding gym has to set itself apart in every single way through all of its training equipment and beyond. While the spin machines seemed to be quite contemporary, the white exercise equipment came across as banal and quite generic: by no means ultimately state-of-the-art. In addition, I was a bit surprised that the gym did not offer Les Mills exercise sessions in its spin room: those 40-minute multi-peak cycle classes through which one becomes immersed in three-dimensional virtual realities created by digital graphics and audio. While Equinox and most reviewers seem to boast of Kiehl's products available at the gym, I find Kiehl's to be a bit mediocre: certainly by no means la crème de la crème, yet has contingently turned itself to a synonym of Equinox clubs. I personally prefer Acqua di Parma, Tom Ford, Molton Brown or Hermès for instance. But that's not an issue at all, it's just a personal preference. I bring my own dopp kit and problem solved! One last note: I simply wish the temperature of the space was slightly lower so that it felt more comfortable. I'm extremely frustrated with the service I've received trying to cancel my membership. I've been a member at this location for a relatively short period of time but was previously a member for four years at various clubs throughout NYC. I recently had to move unexpectedly and went in person to cancel my account. The cancellation was not been processed and I have now been billed for another month despite being unable to use the location. The general manager of the location, who apparently has to "approve" the cancellation, has an out of office without a return date. Therefore, I called billing services where twice the automated service hung up on me because it was "busy" and then, after waiting 30 minutes on hold, the department was completely useless and unable to help in any way without the GM's approval. After having spent thousands of dollars with the organization, I'd expect at least an average level of customer service. read more

Equinox recently sent out an email about how they've been around since 1991 and how they basically changed the gym landscape and invented a new lifestyle. These people are delusional. I'm not going to knock people for enjoying luxury - indeed, the lounge is beautiful, the shampoo makes your hair extra soft and the sauna is a nice touch - but really, it's a sin how they run this place. The sales staff is so gross, such manipulative liars, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth to deal with them. Their cancellation policy really guarantees that the best and only reasonable option is to not sign up in the first place, since it is literally impossible to cancel. The membership fee is exorbitant and not remotely worth it. Music in both the gym and the locker rooms is so, so painful. Some things might be pros or cons, depending on your scene. Personally, I find their classes awful. There is no regard for potential injury, and I don't enjoy being yelled at. There is a mode in the treadmill where it looks like you're running along a beautiful forest path. It comes with an audio track with features birds chirping, the sounds of nature and a shitty house track. That, in essence, is Equinox Brookfield Place. Do not be tempted by how good it looks and smells. Do not be deceived by the convenience of having a gym in your work building. You will live to regret signing up. read more

I'm so upset, I have to compose myself before writing this. I live in the financial district, literally next to brookfield place. Hence, joining a gym seemed like the logical thing to do. I really wanted to get in shape for the summer and thought I'd check out what the hype was about Equinox. HOWEVER, the following situation completely put a sour taste in my mouth. I received payroll deductions in the amount of $347.08 during 2 different pay periods AND I NEVER EVEN SIGNED UP. How is that possible???? My company has a corporate account with Equinox in which they offer a discount for gym membership for up to 2 people. My boyfriend and I went to Equinox just to check out the gym in mid March and spoke to membership advisor, Alyson Belgraier and she showed us a tour of the gym and the corporate discount, which would be deducted directly from my paycheck had I joined. HOWEVER, my boyfriend and I were reluctant to join in the end because of the cost and we left without signing any paperwork or consenting to any membership offers. In the following weeks, I received constant emails from Equinox, which I know is normal for a business wanting to recruit members but I did not respond at all. Alyson emailed me as well asking whether I would like to join. (I have all the email threads.) Long story short, I did not want to join and ignored the emails. However, I noticed on my following two checks that Equinox had charged me membership for two people one period and then again the next pay period (membership for March + April). But I started noticing that there was a "GYM" deduction for $173.54 (price for two people to join Equinox with my corporate discount"). I caught the deductions on the second pay period so they had already charged me $347.08. I was very upset and alarmed at the fact that they could charge me without my consent or knowledge even. I emailed/called Alyson several times. She responded to my email and said that she never signed me up. I have all the email threads. She mentioned that she would talk to her HR but I needed to talk to my payroll first. I talked to my payroll and they told me Equinox had indeed authorized them to charge me, WHICH I NEVER DID EVER! I called/emailed the GM of Equinox and no response. I called a total of 6 times in the last 2 days and left messages. They have not gotten back to me still! They still haven't called me back! Gym is clean and has a gorgeous view. Nice change-rooms/showers. One of the better places to work out in Manhattan. So why only 3 stars? Simple: a crowded gym floor and a failure to rein in the personal trainers. Yes, I get the trainers generate revenue and may help Equinox avoid raising fees. But they are intrusive and encourage their customers to do douchey novelty exercises such as slamming medicine balls up and down. Are they also going to teach them to grunt and slam their weights too? This would be a 5-start facility but for this failure of common-sense and basic gym etiquette. read more
