I was an equinox member in Manhattan for 2 years before cancelling and since this opened on my block I figured it's perfect. But now that I'm a member in Williamsburg i remembered why it's such a love/hate with equinox. The quality of their spin classes are probably the worst in comparison to other gyms. For what they charge it's super no frills and badly executed. Also classes have no special lighting, weights, etc. 2 out of the 3 spin classes I attended last week were playing awful 90s music while the instructor stood off her bike pointlessly screaming and singing like she was at a concert for 45 minutes. Wtf. Last thing Greenday and Alanis Morisette music makes me want to do is competitively bike. It's been open for 2 weeks and the classes are now already so overbooked that most have a waiting list to attend. I was assured when signing up this wouldn't be the case. They also time the classes so that it's almost impossible to do 2 after each other. It's a beautiful clean gym and there's plenty of towels and the lockers don't need padlocks - if that's super important to you. For the insane premium they charge here you're not getting anything you wouldn't at another gym. read more

Finally a gym in the area that offers all the things you need to get fit and healthy! I belong to the one in Columbus when I worked in the area and when I moved and worked in Williamsburg there really wasn't anything all that great. So when I heard Equinox was opening I jumped on the opportunity to finally have a great gym. Basically you are paying for the classes that is what the memebership to me is about.. the classes are insane..and beyond any kind of workout I have had in a while. The trainers are insane in a good way. The gym is all black and white and they have a great selection of machines. They have different class options and some you have to sign up in advance. The locker rooms have key pads so you don't have to bring a lock. They have an amazing steam room and the showers are great if you're going to the gym before work. Most Equinox locations are great but not this one. They definitely rushed to get into the neighborhood without thinking about space. Unless you go the minute they open or just before close, its going to be unbearably overcrowded. Be prepared to wait for machines/equipment and get kicked off machines by personal trainers. read more

What horrible experience - the membership advisors are rude and waste your time. I went to this location to meet with a membership advisor to learn more about a promotion. I reached out to a membership advisor a while back, but never heard from them. Recently, a different membership advisor reached out to tell me about a promotion that was going on and asked me to come in. Not only was the advisor I was supposed to meet with 20 minutes late, but a different advisor I did end up speaking to did not believe me when I told him no one got back to me. No apology for the delay and even told me that he didn't think "that membership advisor [I] reached out to even exists." Nice. When I told him I originally emailed to discuss prices, he told me it was a waste of time and that everything I could've wanted to know was online. Nice! I'm sure the gym is great, and I'm not advocating for another gym via this review, but this was a joke of an experience and I would not want to go to a gym run by people this rude. I was in Brooklyn for a conference happened upon this place accidentally. There were two Duane Reade near the William Vale Hotel (OMG: the best place, highly recommended, would never stay anywhere else in Williamsburg, and get the Gotham rooms for magical views of the city). I ended up going to the one further away and before I knew it, there I was: Equinox, Duane Reade, Whole Foods. It's a smaller club (no pool, no jacuzzi, no sauna) but the front desk people are incredibly friendly. And the girls in the locker room were surprisingly friendly as well. I think Williamsburg gets a bad rap. The Flatiron young professionals/Millennials seem quite a bit more uptight and it's a similar crowd (parents helping with exorbitant rent, young etc). The steam room is *outstanding*: very hot, steam goes off regularly. Also the lockers have locks. 63rd Street is due for renovation and it's just ridiculous that tiny new clubs have these lockers and we still need to bring a padlock. Nice open space for cardio and weights. Well-designed, well-run. Now Equinox needs to put one in Park Slope. DUMBO, BK Heights, Williamsburg are all practically the city. The far out Brooklyn people need a decent club. Planet Fitness is pretty much the only choice out in PS. read more

I know it's pricey, but it's worth it if you're someone who goes to the gym frequently. The facility is top of the line, it's constantly being cleaned and they have great products to use in the showers. The classes are killer. They have something for everyone and the teachers are great. I've taken maybe one class I didn't enjoy out of fifty. Steam room is a huge bonus, especially during the cold months. I did class pass before this and I enjoy coming to Equinox more because the classes are consistently awesome and you can hop into the weight section or do some more cardio if you want. If you enjoy the L Train at rush hour, you'll love this club. Super fun to wait in a line to take a shower, to go to the bathroom, and to get a locker. Yep, there have been several times where I've gone to the gym to find there are no lockers available cause there are too many people at the gym. Whiiiiich means patrons now bring their coats and bags around with them to the treadmills, weight area, and studio classes. The gym has registered this complaint and have now removed 2 of the 5 vanity/ blowdryer areas from the women's locker room to install additional lockers... whiiiiiich means now you can't wash your hands cause the sink mirrors are one of the only places left to do makeup and hair. They also removed the full-length mirror to put in lockers. Cause what high-end gym has something as luxirous as a full-length mirror in the locker room? The classes are all booked within the hour they become available (max is 40 gym-goers per class).... which means you can't plan on going to the gym. Instead, you get to cross your fingers, and don't make evening plans, and hope you make it off the waitlist. I once filled out a survey about how happy I was at the gym. I indicated that the gym was oversold cause it was impossible to book a class outside of the first hour they opened up booking. The manager wrote back a patronizing message about how he could help me navigate the online booking system. Sorry man, I'm not setting a 5am alarm to book a class held 7am the next day just because you oversold your club. If classes aren't a thing for you, why in the world are you coming here? The weight floor itself is full of personal trainers using way too much space, and the machines are about half what they have at any other gym. Getting your run in during the winter [never ending]snow? Good luck. Treadmills are full of others with the same idea so you have to wait on the elliptical or some other machine to kill time. Then, when you do get on a dreadmill, you feel bad cause other runners are walking around expectantly looking for a place to get in the miles. Equinox has such potential because of the "cutting edge" classes, but if you look up the names of the class trainers, you'll see they're at many of the other local (and more inexpensive) gyms. I continue to receive flyers about enrollment discounts all the time at my home which means they are sooooo not addressing the problems of being oversold. This week, after 12 ridiculous months of being locked in an Equinox contract, I went to NYSC... and I got to SIT DOWN IN THE LOCKER ROOM TO PUT ON MY SHOES!!!! You might think it's a little thing, but you can't do this at Williamsburg Equinox cause it's so crowded. But hey, they have eucalyptus towels, right? read more

As an avid gym goer, I felt it was only right to begin a series rating the best gyms in NYC. I've been on the hunt & decided to join Equinox. My ranking is based on a gym with space,machines, free weights and more than TWO squat racks. Equinox Williamsburg was one of the first locations I went to. I walked in, upstairs to the main floor. It's pretty much one floor for equipment, the spin and main studios. The yoga studio and locker rooms are a flight down. As for equipment. There is about 3 short rows for bikes and cardio machines. They have 2 squat racks and One platform with bumper plates and a hex bar for compound lifts. There's also a lot of open space for exercises that require moving around. Machine space is quite limited but they make pretty good use of it. There's also one nice sized stretch area next to the main studio. The classes are nice! I've tried yoga and spin and heard great things about metcon and barre. Booking is insane though. I'm going to continue this with the rest of the Equinox in NYC, but this location is pretttty small. Id get all access to have a more well rounded feel of Equinox. read more

I have been a member at Equinox since 2015 in both California and NY, and the Wiliamsburg location is by far the worst that I have experienced. Their staff is so rude, they simply just cannot be bothered by the customers, which is ironic because its literally their job to interact with and greet customers, but ok. I have had 2 pairs of spin shoes stolen from this location... I tend to throw them under a bench in the locker room while I shower because the locker area is too jammed to actually put them away, and when I get out of the shower they're just gone. Given the price that I and other members pay for the membership, Im doubting that other equinox goers are hard up for a used pair of spin shoes. Lastly, the classes are always 100% booked within the first 5 minutes of booking availability and the floor is jammed with personal trainers monopolizing the floor space/ equipment. read more

Join another gym, avoid Equinox. You have options. Having scented towels isn't enough. The gym is over crowded and the staff is lacking the general interest and brain capacity to do their jobs. Some of the staff are great, but, that's a very small percentage. The facilities themselves are great. New equipment, great locker room, good classes. Reason for the 1* review is the level of quality of the operations and staff at the gym. Every month I uncover a new issue with my account. For example, I have been a member of Equinox for years and have accumulated about 10 guest passes. One day I noticed they were all gone from my account and the team at Equinox told me they had taken them away since new policy stated you could not have more than 2. What kind of service is that? I have been a paying member for 5+ years and they just deleted guest passes that were in my account. On another occasion, they charged my credit card $1,050 dollars one day. I noticed this charge a few weeks later and when I asked them about it they told me they had recently switched account management softwares and there had been some incorrect charges made to guest accounts. OK, I get it -- these things happen. The worst part? The General Manager told me that his team had uncovered the mistake but instead of notifying me and refunding my credit card they decided to give me Equinox credit instead for $1,050. To a degree I consider that stealing. If I had not contacted them they would never have even mentioned it to me! What a joke. At this point I am pretty fed up with the level of service an will likely be canceling my membership shortly. I am tired of all the sales calls and emails I get to refer new guests -- they are great at that! read more

While I did enjoy the location, (Williamsburg, next to Whole Foods, etc) and some parts of the facility-- the yoga was sub-par... and maybe even downright awful, in my opinion. Since yoga is a huge component in the experience at Equinox, being that it is a luxury club, you'd think they would pay attention to detail in their class training programs. It seems very restricted and forced. Not how yoga is supposed to feel at all. Unfortunately the yoga instructors do not seem to be teaching basic yoga poses, they only teach very complicated ones, that only they can really do. It's a complete mess of uncertainty and confusion amongst the patrons in the class. If proper breathing reminders were introduced before stretching into a pose, maybe more people in the class would actually be able to do them. The set up for most of the poses is not even accurate. They will you to step back into warrior one- and immediately you will step out- I found that my knee wasn't over the ankle, meaning I wasn't getting a proper stretch. I was just pretending to do the yoga at that point. Therefore instead of the full yoga experience the instructors set the tone for a very competitive environment one in which does not feel like I am even getting a workout at all. The instructors switch out of the pose too quick to even feel the stretch. No balance, breath, nor meditation involved. I found myself falling over quite often. I go to YTTP (Yoga To The People) on North 11th and the yoga there is on a level that I feel Equinox should be on. (And, it's donation based!). I have been going there almost every day and I really appreciate how they do things there. I do enjoy the treadmills, studio cycling, and how it is when the club is not too crowded, which is around 6pm. The staff in the locker room's are pleasantly nice. I really liked Felicia! Alternatively, the staff at the front desk was very rude over the phone, and very patronizing. When I initially called and asked to speak to a salesperson about a membership, they actually suggested I go ti 'Planet Fitness' in a very derogatory tone. (..???) The steam room was amazing, and rejuvenating. I will say that the shower room hallways do have a lot of hair on the floor and walking from the shower- to a locker is actually dreadful. Would certainly have to bring some shower shoes in my gym bag. Overall, I was very disappointed in this as I very much looked forward to joining without having to rely on another source of exercise training outside of the club with my membership. EDIT: I received a comment from Equinox to email them with my concerns. That must be a fake comment because I responded via email, and I haven't received any response whatsoever. Not even an automated one saying they will intake my feedback, etc. It seems like they're trying to take care of it when they leave that comment-- but they never even respond in the first place. Too busy! Wait for lockers, wait for showers, no space in the steam room and good luck working out. Signing up for a class? Forget about it, it's like buying a limited sneaker online. I had an All-Access Equinox membership for ~2 years, with the Williamsburg location being my frequented near-home Gym. Pros: The Williamsburg location is ideally located and was one of the newer generation Equinox locations. It's designed well, spacious, and always clean. Cons: I found this gym to consistently be very crowded during "rush" hours and beyond. You can't necessarily fault the gym for this, but when you're paying $200+ for a membership one would hope you could get on the equipment you need, and in the classes you want to attend. Where I find this gym particularly offensive is the staff. More so than any other location I found multiple membership staff + front desk staff to be incredibly rude, elitist, and unhelpful. My time to Equinox came to end one day I attempted to check-in to find my membership had been cancelled. The front desk staff rudely advised I was cancelled without any context as to why, nor offering what next steps were. In short, due to an antiquated system of checking the ongoing validity of receiving a corporate rate, Equinox knowingly and intentionally cancelled my membership without informing me. The response I got was that "[members] are responsible in managing their contract". I think it is in poor taste for a self proclaimed "luxury gym" to operate this way. Aside from this debacle, I'm not sure if the staff is so miserable because they work at Equinox - or if they actually think they are elite enough to treat people the way that they do. But need the world remind the staff at this location-- you work at a gym and your elitist attitudes are uncalled for and laughable. read more

I've been a member of Equinox since 2009 and have been going to the Williamsburg location regularly since it opened, since I'm in the neighborhood. While this location may lack some of the perks of the other larger locations (namely a nice lounge & cafe, larger locker rooms and spa), it's become my favorite place for a workout. Granted, I'm able to avoid rush hour times, so I don't have to worry about the high traffic issue. It's consistently clean, the staff is super friendly and the smaller space creates more of a neighborhood / friendly vibe. Most importantly, they've been recently adding more and more classes with top instructors like Ellis Peters and Sam Rothermel who both teach killer barre burn classes. read more

My locker was broken this morning (not the first time). Apparently there is only one key in the entire gym. A staff member took the key home with her, so there was no key to open up my locker. I was waiting half naked, with no shoes on, no keys, no cell phone, and no money for 1 hour in the lobby for the staff member to come to equinox and hand over the key. I wasn't offered anything -- water, juice, perhaps a towel or sweatshirt to put on while I waited in the cold lobby. Sorry, but this is Equinox, not some janky gym that costs $20 a month. read more

Pretty big fan of this gym! Since it's relatively new, all the equipment is nice and clean, with a great range of machines and other workout equipment to choose from. They have two Olympic bar platforms (with a healthy mix of metal and plastic weights too!), TRX bands, and the usual treadmills/bikes/ellipticals etc. The changing rooms are great. Showers are clean, with a nice little changing cubby inside the stall itself (separate from the showers) if you want additional privacy. Plus the water pressure is amazing! The toilets are a little weird (they're pitch black tile, so you're basically doing your business in the dark), but no complaints other than that. The classes are a little hit or miss. I took a barre class and HATED it, but that's probably because I don't like barre all that much anyway. I felt like the barre instructor breezed through the movements without any proper explanation. I also took a METCON class and loved that, but the instructor also breezed through the movements pretty quickly too. I think I just knew how to do more of them, which is probably why I liked it better. Lots of equipment in both classes for everybody, so that was nice not to have to fight each other for weights and mats and stuff. All in all, would recommend. read more

I've been a member since they opened and have had good experiences there so far. I felt inclined to write this review after taking the precision running class yesterday morning. It was great!! I am a big fan of Barry's Bootcamp and still go a couple of times a week, but it was really nice to know that a super challenging but attainable class exists at my regular gym too. I'm not that great at motivating myself when I am on the treadmill alone so I liked the structure of this class. The teacher (Alex) was super encouraging. As others have said, the facilities are really nice. Clean showers with nice products and the eucalyptus towels are amazing. read more

This place blows. I'd been waiting for this location to open since I'd heard about it as it was near my house. I wanted to get out of paying for speciality gyms and start working out comprehensively and thought a trainer would be the way to go. In the end I had to chase someone down to do a training session with me. When I arrived at my first sessions she told me how tired she was - great! I just worked a 10 hour day and needed the motivation and my trainer is totally over it. She then proceeded to do my BMI and told me I was in the "morbidly obese" category. Look, I was obviously there for a reason, but I'm 5'6 and 125lbs and workout regularly. It felt like a a tactic to try and get me to commit to an expensive package to pull me out of the death grip of my morbid obesity, unreal. I stopped going because it was soooo crowded and such a scene that I'd rather burn money elsewhere. Recently, I decided to give it another shot. I went on a Saturday in June. In New York City. When most people are away on the weekends. It was 2pm and I had to wait in line for a shower. Not only that, a woman decided to change her tampon standing in the middle of the locker room for the world to see. I actually could not believe it. Still can't. I regret not reporting it. Suffice to say, I've not been back. If you live in the neighborhood and care about working out, just go to Retro Fitness or literally anywhere else. It doesn't smell like eucalyptus or look like crate & barrel but it's 100% more pleasant and less money. read more

I am surprised by the number of bad reviews. I understand that yes, this gym is more expensive than others, but it really comes down to what you're looking for in a gym. I'm very much a "atmosphere" person --if a gym has a spa-like, positive, clean atmosphere than I know that I will be motivated to go as much as possible. I had checked out other gyms around Williamsburg. Yes, they were less expensive, but the moment I stepped into Equinox, I was greeted with a smile, immediately tended to, and felt invigorated by the energy. The Membership Advisor, Matt, was able to meet with me no more than five minutes after I entered the door. I was with him for nearly an hour, as I addressed all my physical concerns, my fitness goals, and pricing questions. He was non-judgemental, straightforward, and very encouraging. The gym was certainly not crowded when I went there, and it was during peak hours. Plus, with the other places I looked into, all I got was a sales pitch and ushered out the door. Matt took his time to get to know me and even go over the classes that would be beneficial to me based off my concerns and goals. I had such a wonderful experience, that I did not want to leave the gym. While it might not be the "right" gym for everyone; I knew that within moments of entering, that it was the right place for me. read more

I started going to equinox Williamsburg a few months ago and it was fine. Now is really packed and kinda gross I think they oversold it in January. The class schedule makes no sense, they removed all the good classes like 30/60/90 and real fitness classes for stupid classes like firestarter which is a waste of time and not a real workout. All the classes need to be booked because the gym is over sold and basically you need to plan all your workouts with over 24 hrs in advance because otherwise you cannot attend any class just as walk-in. For the amount they charge I am considering other gyms with less people and better class schedule. This one is definitely not worth it. Additionally, the quality of the machines is really low and nowhere near other equinox clubs. Look at other options worth your money and time. read more

I wish I would have taken the reviews I read here seriously. I regret signing up as my experiences with this club have been terrible!! I hate it! I wish I would have had the opportunity to do a free trial before taking on this commitment. I basically have the same issues as everyone else regarding problems with staff, overcrowding, classes etc.. Does the management here read Yelp as they completely disregarded by complaint emails which is wrong as people are paying a really high price a month for offerings we can get elsewhere. Since I am in my first year of membership, I am stuck with no way out. I am now hardly in the country (due to an unforeseen family situation) and still cannot even cancel. Classes are good, everything is clean and working. Major downside is that its so overcrowded it becomes an unpleasant experience to change, shower etc. Typically you will need to hunt for a free locker, stand in a corner to get changed with people bustling past, stand with 5 to 10 other people in the steam room because the seats are all taken, and then queue for a shower. Not the end of the world but for the price I had hoped for a nicer overall experience. read more

I joined equinox more than a year ago after spending years paying lower fees to other gyms and it's been the best decision ever. What's really done it for me are the group classes (HIIT and Tabata). I've committed to going 3 times a week and I've lost 20 pounds since joining. I'm giving it 4 stars because this location is overcrowded to the point where you can't find a locker. read more

This place gets way less credit than it deserves. It's clean, relatively new, and doesn't smell like feet. The staff at the front desk is always smiling. The people that run around and maintain this place do a heck of a good job. With all the people working out here, it's really waaaay cleaner than your average gym. The classes are hit or miss. This location has a bunch of fabulous instructors that have a huge following. Their classes are booked within minutes. And then there are some classes that consistently seem to have unfilled spots, these are the ones you're probably better off avoiding. If you're looking for a solid, clean gym with pleasant staff, decent amounts of equipment, a ton of classes (btw these have a convenient sign-up on the app, so you're guaranteed a spot) then this is the place for you. read more

The layout of the club is rough, and somehow some of the equipment already squeaks, but overall the quality of equipment is 3.5/5 stars. Horrible back row machines. Equinox is Not Bad! I loved the eucalyptus towels and I even put one in my face after every rep L O L !! However i thought Adam Sheinman was slightly over the top as a Membership Advisor because he forced me and my Lovely Partner to put the eucalyptus towels in our mouths! I mean they are great but don't you think That's a bit much!! L O L. Anyway Equinox was a great experience, really loved the Net Flix on the treadmills. But we had an unfortunate experience on the treadmills, me and my Partner waved to Adam Sheinman in an expression of joy! And he didn't wave back. Not so Nice if you ask me!! You know the gym is great but Adam Sheinman, not so much, so it's just "A - O K" to me. Don't forget to taste the luxury soaps! read more

Not a huge fan of this location. Ive been here on six or seven occasions and not sure I want to make it a regular thing. It has a very stuffy and "club like" atmosphere beginning from check in to the bathrooms to the staff. All the equipment is on one floor and it's very cramped--especially on weekends. Staff is not very friendly compared to other locations. There's never a hello or goodbye from the check in staff or trainers walking around helping people out. In fact I was trying to workout once when a trainer came over and started using the machine I was on for his client without asking or saying anything (mind you I had just finished a set and was taking a breather about two feet away...). Not a way to win clients methinks. Bathrooms are also cramped and SO FREAKING DARK. I can barely see anything in the bathroom stall and the lighting is awful. I would never get ready or put on makeup here due to the awful lighting. Locker areas are badly set up and I'm usually stepping over someone to get out of there. Good things about this location--equipment is brand new, it's very clean, they offer a ton of interesting classes, and it's right next to Whole Foods! read more

Best gym classes ever. Have been a member of almost all possible gyms in Brooklyn and this is hands down the best quality group instruction out there. The fitness manager Alie is incredible. She teaches a cycling class and generally manages the schedule and she really is great. Can't wait to visit tomo. (Get a larger group yoga room, equinox, we def pay for it.
