Spreads and bread and Coke in a jar (why?)
    Nickie C.

We were looking for a place to grab a small bit of food, and on a wet and cold night, Ergon seemed to fit the bill. It's a nice place, but a little cramped. There's a deli downstairs, where you apparently buy a lot of the ingredients for the menu items, and I would definitely pop back to check that out, as the quality of the ingredients in what we had seemed very good. I opted for a plate of spreads and bread, at £10, and my other half got some odd-sounding meatballs, for £9. One of the spreads was salmon, so I requested to have that removed and get more of the more-appetising-sounding spicy feta spread. There was a bit of a language barrier (ie, I only speak English, and the waiter thought he did, too) so ordering was a bit tricky but got it in the end. My plate came out first, about 15 minutes before the meatballs. It was served on a very heavy slate with 5 slices of bread - 2 a farmhouse style, and 3 a bit artisanal-y. I had 2 scoops of the feta, a splodge of aubergine stuff, and red tzatziki. I'm not sure what made it red - well, more just not-white really, but it was my favourite. The aubergine was nice, but I didn't like the spicy feta spread. It was really heavy on the smoked paprika, which I don't like (and wasn't listed as a main flavour) so I didn't really have much food, to be honest! Plus we didn't have enough bread (and why wasn't it pita?). I didn't have any of the meatballs, but my husband enjoyed them (but not really very much until he started using some of the leftover spreads from my food to enhance them). The service was fine, the ingredients good quality, but the value for money was bad, and the food just wasn't really exciting enough for that 4th or 5th star. A fine place to go, though, and I think would be more suited to a group of 4 people. The menu is pretty limited - less than what shows on the website - so go with people who aren't picky, share some meze, and you might enjoy it a bit more than me!

I'm not sure my coke needed to be served a jar. The glass next to it would have sufficed...

I loved the feel of the place. Small but generous in personal space. Extra effort was made to make sure our party of 6 were comfortable. And the food was delicious. The welcome pre dinner treats such as olives, radishes, and peppers were delightful. Then came the hummus--best I have ever had. The king prawns were simply cooked and wonderful. Everything was so fresh! The calamari, the Greek salad. All excellent. The entrees our party enjoyed included lamb, chicken, spanakopita, falafel, and so much more. If I lived in the area, I would frequent the place. I even commented to my wife that I could see myself landing at LHR and making my way straight to Aphrodite!

But our host was the most pleasant man and fished out items from the kitchen that weren't only vegan but also delicious! To begin with, even without ordering anything, pitas, flava bean salad, and olives, which, by themselves, more than hold their own. The falafels are one of the best I've tasted in London. And the hummus was unbelievable. For mains, the dolmades were excellent. Even the roasted potatoes that our host offered, and which weren't on the menu, were amazing. Overall, the chefs and hosts at the Aprodite Taverna take real joy in feeding people. And I'd definitely go here again: for the food as well as the service.
