He left Valley Presbyterian Hospital and again as he has done before has left his new patients behind with no forwarding info about where he is going or why he is leaving another practice. A lot of red flags. Patient beware! I was referred to Dr. E by one of the top surgical nurses in Southern Cali 7 years ago. She said if she ever had a problem that Dr Espensen is the ONLY doctor that she would trust. That was good enough for me. So, I went to him to fix a problem when another doctor screwed up on my toe... He fixed it. More importantly he fixed it right. I found him to be professional, knowledgeable, highly commutative and genuinely caring through the entire process. I have gone back through the years for a couple of other issues and its always the same high quality of service and great results. I now know why other doctors and nurses go to see him. I have been known to write long reviews but I am keeping this short as my feet feel so good after leaving Dr Espensen's office, I want to go walk around! I have been battling a very bad and annoying case of plantar fasciitis for months now and decided that it was time to see a doctor for it. Went to Dr Espensen a few weeks back and he was the nicest guy! He really knows his stuff. He gave me a list of stretches to do in addition to some other tips for treatment (ice, frozen water bottle, night splints, and recommended inserts). I gave that a shot for a few weeks and pain got better but not quite as much as I would hope. I then decided on the dreadful cortisone shot! I had been dreading this ever since I get plantar fasciitis due to how bad I heard it hurts but we both decided it may be best to get me over that hump. Dr Espensen assured me it was not that bad and he was good at it (he told me he got good by doing it on himself when his got bad) and he sure did an amazing job. Pain was not that bad and I felt better instantly. If you have any foot issues, go see him! He will fix you up and is a great doctor and a great guy. read more

This jerk deserves no stars. I had ingrown toe nail surgery with this joke of a doctor a couple years ago. He damaged both my big toes and I had to get serious surgery from an orthopedic surgeon as well as two years of physical therapy. He is an absolute jerk. I had an allergic reaction from an antibiotic he gave me after he improperly dealt with ingrown toe nails and didn't write down that I was allergic to it in my chart and told me that I was just imagining that my face and tongue were incredibly swollen and that I was covered in hives. read more

After I posted my first review, Dr. Espensen's office called me to ask that I remove my Yelp review, claiming that it was untruthful, which it is not. When I refused to remove the review, they threatened me, saying Dr. Espensen's lawyer would be calling me. Dr. Espensen's office never contacted me in the seven+ months that this issue went unresolved (although they assert that they did attempt to contact me). However, when my Yelp review posted, they were able to get a hold of me immediately. These actions paint a clear picture of this doctor's motives and priorities. read more

I really liked going to Dr. Espensen and was disappointed when he left his practice in Burbank. The doctor that took his place is also really good - Dr. Yadegaran. I have seen her many times since Dr. Espensen left Burbank and am very happy with her. You can find Dr. Espensen if you look hard enough, but I don't think he does the regular podiatry any more - he does major surgery stuff at a hospital and an office visit is very expensive if you don't use insurance. Bottom line - stick with Dr. Yadegaran! She seems to really care about her patients. read more

I've been to a lot of doctors over the years but Dr. Espensen is really the best doctor I've ever had. His office staff is friendly, efficient and caring. Dr. Espensen also really cares about his patients and is dedicated to them. He takes the time to assess your problem and to carefully explain your options. He eventually did surgery for a bunion on my right foot. Everyone had told me that this would be a painful operation, etc. but I was amazed that after the surgery and during my whole recovery I didn't have any pain (I think I took one aspirin the day after the surgery for pain). Not only is Dr. Espensen a very competent surgeon but he also makes sure that AFTER the surgery that you get the care and attention to ensure an excellent healing result. He has a great reputation around town. I asked several nurses and doctors I know to recommend someone regarding my foot and Dr. Espensen's name ALWAYS came up as being the best there is. I read a review below from someone named April L. and I couldn't believe she would write a negative review. Obviously this is someone who isn't paying her bills and is trying to intimidate Dr. E. I've been going to Dr. Espensen for about five years now and can not make a single complaint about any of my visits with him. I am just about recovered from my second surgery with Dr. Espensen. I had one last year for a bunion and one a little over a month ago on my other foot for a bunion and a hammer toe. Both surgeries went as smoothly as possible. He prepped me for both surgeries before hand so I new exactly what to expect. He eased any anxiety I had about having surgery. Dr. Espensen is very personable, funny, and has a great bedside manner. He's honest and straightforward and he takes really good care of his patients. The staff at Dr. Espensens's office is also fantastic. They are always good to me and very friendly! My grandmother had foot problems and we were never happy with a podiatrist. Then my mother started having foot problems, and for years and we were never happy with a podiatrist. After going through a dozen different podiatrists in the Burbank area, we finally found a gem! I couldn't ask for a better doctor than Dr. Espenson. My mother doesn't like doctors but she loved him. I had pain in the top of my left foot for months. I was nervous about going to a podiatrist because I knew that I would most likely get an injection in my foot. Dr. Espensen put me at ease right away. I explained my nervousness about getting a shot in the foot and he calmly explained what he was doing and made the process as painless as possible. He explained everything I needed to do to fix the foot issue. His receptionist and medical assistant Javier were also very nice to deal with. It's so refreshing when you find a doctor you love. If you have any foot issues, Dr. Espensen is your guy! Dr Espensen corrected my bunion in March 2013. He made me feel very at ease on the day of the surgery (it's always so nerve wracking to go under the knife!), and he made sure to check on me after I woke up from surgery and assure me that all went well. It's now three months later and my foot is getting better and better each day. I'm finally at the point where I can jog and wear cute shoes. I couldn't be happier with the surgery and my choice of going with Dr. Espensen. In a few years I'll definitely go back to have him correct the bunion on my other foot. He's knowledgeable, he loves what he does, he's friendly, and has a great sense of humor. The staff is wonderful and I've never had a long wait. Great experience all around! Another side note: I had my surgery done at the Glendale Surgery Center (great facility, by the way) and I noticed how nice Dr Espensen was to the staff and how much they adored him. Staff is top notch. Super friendly. Very efficient. Dr. is very personable and everything seemed to be all in line for my first of two bunionectomies. During the course of my post-op physical therapy, I wasn't having much luck gaining mobility in my big toe. After completing PT and still experiencing extremely limited upward mobility in big toe/2nd opinion revealed joint was protruding above the toe (which was why it felt that my toe was "hitting a wall" as I kept describing it - it was literally bumping up against the joint). A post surgical/post physical therapy x-ray would have revealed this. A cheliectomy is required to repair this secondary issue. read more

Awesome doctor! I've had foot problems for years (read decades). I've seen many, many podiatrists and foot surgeons and he is by far the best. Eight years ago, I was scheduled for surgery and cancelled when Pilate's footwork made a huge difference in my foot pain. Fast forward eight years. The old conditions were creating new problems (bunions and hammer toes) and I finally decided to do the surgery. Dr. Espensen was my 4th opinion. Yes - my fourth! I saw a local podiatrist in Santa Monica (who first said I needed surgery), then the big wig in LA (who spent maybe 5 minutes with me), then the Foot and Ankle institute of the West. I scheduled surgery with the Foot and Ankle Institute but was uncomfortable with the conversations I had with them. I told the doctor that getting info from him was like pulling teeth. But I liked the idea of their non-invasive surgery so I was willing to overlook the uncomfortable conversations. But they wanted to be conservative. Another way of looking at that is that they weren't going to correct all the problems. So I saw one more doctor - Dr. Espensen. He immediately knew what all the problems were without my telling him and how to correct them (I'd heard it before in the five minutes with the big wig - OK maybe it was ten). But Dr. Espensen took the time to tell me what was causing my problems, showed it to me in detail in the x-rays, told me what would solve the problems and why. He was extremely personable and friendly, never patronizing and spent quite a bit of time with me. When I told him about the conservative, non-invasive surgery, he said my foot was complicated and if I went the conservative route, he'd probably see me again since it wouldn't be correcting the original problem. Those were my thoughts as well. He was also very candid about "non-invasive surgery". You can't put a camera in the foot yet, so basically non- invasive means operating blindly. He'd rather see what he's doing. Because he is so personable, told me what I already knew (and more), has great reviews and spent more time with me than some might think was reasonable, I decided to do the surgery with him. In my pre-op appointment, he gave me a detailed explanation of what would happen and what I could expect. I tend to be anxious about surgery - I don't do well with anesthesia or pain meds. He listened to me and HEARD me. The hospital staff was wonderful, the anesthesia was a breeze and all went exactly as he said it would. That was four weeks ago. My recovery and aftercare has been EXACTLY what he said it would be. When I have had questions, he returns my call quickly. Can you belive it?? His office staff is friendly, efficient and they run on time. This is a doctor who respects my time as much as I respect his. And get this - he just got back from Nicaragua where he participated in the Doctors without Borders program. This guy is for real!! read more

The office that he had been associated with has NO INFORMATION about where he may have re-located to and I find this extremely odd. So I am off to find a new podiatrist. read more

I am so impressed with Dr Espensen and his practice! He took the time to talk to me about my foot pain, asked questions and really listened. He spent 15 minutes with me discussing and examining my injury. Then he personally walked with me down the hall where he personally took my X-Ray. Yes, the DR took the X-Ray AND it is in his office. I didn't have to drive to another building, make another appointment wait in another office and then come back for results. It all happened immediately. He diagnosed the problem and had me come back 2 weeks later to see about my recovery. I am FIXED, can now run, exercise, carry my kidos adn wear heel again without pain. He is such a kind caring person and doctor. He even volunteers in Central America with Doctors Without Boarders. (and speaks fluent Spanish) Very impressed!! He is the REAL DEAL! read more

Dr. Espensen was AMAZING!!! I had been tolerating pain in my right foot for a couple of years. Just figured it was a bunion so I thought I had to grin and bear it. It got so annoying that I finally went to a specialist. He saw the problem immediately, a problem with the mobility of my big toe. Within two weeks I was scheduled for surgery. Now recovery wasn't fun...but he made it tolerable with his after care treatment. Four months later and I feel SO much better! Fully exercising and wearing sassy shoes again. And...the best part is that there is virtually no visible scaring. I know this will sound weird...but after he released me...I was kind of sad that I didn't need to see him again....he was just that good, caring and professional. I am so thankful! read more

For many years, I had miserable feet, and when I couldn't ignore the pain any more, I made an appointment with Dr. Espensen. Deb quoted a non-insurance rate for the consultation. I had budgeted for this: I was ready for relief. It did not go well. Deb greeted me with indifference. Javier was polite (until later). Dr. Espensen took x-rays, the state of my right foot was a bad shock. He explained the three procedures needed --costing $8,500, three times what I expected (a good part of the cost for the facility and anesthesia). For the rest of my visit, he vented: paperwork kept him in the office late, Obama's reelection meant a 30% drop in income, it was barely worth keeping a practice anymore. What? My foot is killing me, I cannot pay out of pocket to fix it: this is not what I need to hear. What can I do? He suggested Olive View County Hospital, he knew good doctors there. I asked for a referral; he said I could just walk into the podiatry clinic, he knew people who did that. Not true! You can walk into the ER, but unless you have a bleeding gunshot wound, you'll sit there for days (read Yelp reviews). I quickly learned there is a lot of protocol before you can get treated in a county clinic: a referral with a diagnosis and an x-ray report, and then a slow approval process. I could get started via the ER at USC (see Yelp reviews about that nightmare), but why suffer? I'd paid for x-rays and a diagnosis, Dr. Espensen could write a referral. Javier gave me his fax number to send the short form. Days later, Javier responded: Dr. Espensen would not write a referral and would not explain why. I phoned, I faxed, but Javier stonewalled me. I gave up, requested my chart and had to pay an additional $20 for copies of my x-rays -- which Dr. Espensen later insisted I was NOT charged, while bad-mouthing me to a patient (I have the credit card receipt). I visited an Urgent Care facility for a referral, paid for a technician's x-ray report, faxed it in -- and waited. With Dr. Espensen's help, I could have avoided several months of pain and aggravation. Today, six months later, I am recovering from surgery through USC's Ortho Foot clinic. Dr. Espensen foresaw a 1 1/2 hour surgery; I was on the table for 4 1/2 hours, and I feel confident that in the end, USC's up-to-date approach and surgical team created the best future result for pain-free flexibility of my foot. I have read the glowing reviews about the caring of Dr. Espensen and his staff, and am sharing my story because I experienced none of that. I would not recommend him. read more

I have been seeing Dr Espensen and his staff since 2007 and he and they are as good as it gets. my surgical results have been exelent. If I deem a current problem as an emergency they get me in ASAP. In reading another yelp users "attack" on the dr. I decided to post an update. First of all, when you have a foot problem on the weekend, you don't page the dr and expect them to diagnose you over the phone as he/she cannot see the ailment in question and will typically refer one to an after hours clinic for treatment. You go to to an urgent care, get treated and it is up to YOU follow up with the Dr. of your choice if you choose to do so. Dr. Espensen is wonderful. Chief of surgery isn't just anyone, it's the best. Dr. Espensen's reponse to a negative review seemed to be professional and simple. I applaude him for responding as most providers probably would not have. I have never had one problem with him nor his staff. I am currently 4 weeks post op from a procedure that brought me prior pain for almost a year. Dr Espensen was very clear every step of the way and he always takes time for questions. read more
