On Valentine's Day, while every other girl in Miami was eating an expensive meal, popping chocolates and bottles of champers, and receiving overpriced bouquets of flowers, the Yelp cupid hit me with a paint brush this year, reminding me of my first love as a child, art, and sent me to Beer and Burger Joint in Brickell where I was greeted with a Jameson, my other love, and then I soon learned that I would no longer be the only girl in Miami without Valentine's Day flowers, every girl's Valentine's Day dream come true! Joe, our Heartsy instructor, or shall we say my Valentine at this point, because let's get real, I met him at a bar/restaurant on Valentine's Day, he bought me a drink, wooed me with his artistic talents and made me dig deep down into my heart, was able to make me let my guard down, and pushed me to find that inner creativity that was hiding deep down for so many years behind the lines of perfection and into the depths of the abstract creative artist. As my Jameson started to kick in, so did the abstract brushstrokes. Quite interesting how the buzz started to enhance my artwork. Drinking and painting class is definitely onto something here...which leads me to now question Monet's sobriety... Joe was a great instructor from start to finish, able to guide a class comprised of a neophyte to a seasoned artist and to really push the envelope, encouraging his pupils to not just copy the painting displayed up front, but to really feel the strokes of the brush and paint what feels right to you, the artist. I was amazed at how a class that was given the same instructions produced very different works of art. While Miami has many offerings for things to do on a night out in Miami, I would highly recommend doing something off the beaten path and trying one of these boozy painting classes at Heartsy either solo or with a date, it can be equally as fun and it is actually very reasonably priced. This is a great alternative for a birthday party or a bachelorette. In the event that you were still wondering how this fairytale Valentine's Day ended, this girl went home, with her first Valentine's Day flowers that she was actually able to keep, you know, the allergen and pollen free acrylic kind on canvas. So, it's self-explanatory that my usual reaction to creating art usually leaves me quivering in the corner like a fearful little squirrel. Alas, Heartsy managed to completely change my opinion of art. Yes, they're that good! With step by step instructions from an aweeeeesome instructor (Joe was thebomb.com...stop judging, he was actually that great) and a great group of individuals, I managed to both have fun and make something I was almost proud of (yes, almost). I learned some stuff, enjoyed myself and the company, and came home with art more artful than I ever thought I could create. I call that a win!

This was one of my favorites galleries during Art Basel, but it was empty other than a few people…read morescrambling around to rearrange a tattoo exhibit that was not open yet. Granted it was off the beaten path, but still no one was there (surprising because we enjoyed what we saw). One look at the colorful art and unusual mediums used and we were sold. My typical artistic tastes don't relate much with these modern designs and unique subject matters, but I have to admit I liked it. Even though some of the art was a bit animated and cartoon like, I was certainly able to admire the artistic talent here (something I had trouble doing at some of the bigger-name galleries where I just did not get it regarding some of the art (like popped balloons on a chrome fence or various plastic bottles filled with beach sand or the ever popular testicles in a bottle). Throughout the day Dec 2 (Friday), artists that were being featured at the gallery were painting murals on 10 nearby buildings including one right next door. Interestingly enough the mural next door was being done by the artist whose work I was impressed with at the gallery (I believe his name was Pixel Pancho). In the gallery his work had a couple pieces that looked like classic superhero characters but in robotic form (I know it doesn't sound like true art, but it was good stuff); then walk out the door and there is this huge mural being done of the same style. I also very much liked work done by an artist Aaron Martin, who did paintings of pandas but they looked angry and full of emotions. We were talking to one of the artists that were scrambling around to set up that closed section, he invited us back for an event that takes "drawn art" and "tattooing" as permanent art on interested parties. It was supposed to be taking place throughout Art Basel but it wasn't ready as of the time I was there on Friday afternoon. The Aleloops 10 custom painted Mini Cooper's were scheduled to make an appearance here Friday night. In actuality, I came to Art Whino specifically for the Aleloops Coopers but was a bit too early. Though I ended up seeing them a couple hours later at Red Dot.

The friendliest art gallery…read more Virginia Miller opened her first gallery in 1974 in Coconut Grove with at first mostly local art but soon expanded to Cuban, Latin American and even some Chinese artist. She moved her gallery to Coral Gables in the early 80's and was a major factor in starting the first monthly gallery nights in greater Miami. That's right folks, Wynwood didn't start shyt. Virginia is extremely approachable as is her husband and they usually have the artist in house to answer any and all questions. The latest artist that was showing here was Leslie Lew. She shared with the Yibbies a story behind a painting she did in the early 80's while she lived above a botanica on Broadway. Let me repeat that. A botanica I'm the middle of Manhattan on Broadway. Times have changed. If you do happen to come by on a First Friday know that they will have some kind if white wine, never red. Red spills where you least expect it. I was confused to find that the restaurant where the event was to be held was permanently closed! I called the restaurant and the phone was disconnected. I contacted Yaymaker repeatedly and the event host, Brittney to request an explanation and refund. Radio silence. There is no way to reach anyone by phone and the company refuses to resolve issues when you send emails. I'm not sure if this is a scam or if it's just an extremely poorly run business. Either way, I am out over $60 and left trying to figure out how to receive a refund from this ghost company.

There was ample room to paint, waiters walking about refiling drinks (only two waiters for a full room so it did take a while), and lets not forget the amazing energy flowing about! I remember painting in elementary school where I would get a pat in the back and think 'I'll do better next time, I suck'... But in this environment I felt like anything goes, I felt like Picasso, I felt good, and I felt like I can take over the world with my love owls! Ami was extremely open to what you want, very patient with us and our ability as an artist, she would walk around and let people know what she liked, lets not forget she was also exceptionally encouraging! Everyone used the same paint, but we are all did something different and added our own personal touches. A definite must try for anyone... Open for any age group and any type of relationship. With friends, your significant other, or someone random you want to drag along, just DO it!

I found out about Maryjane's designs through Instagram; a fashion blogger posted a picture on…read moreInstagram wearing one of Maryjane's necklaces, I fell in love with it as soon as I saw the picture, which made me look through Maryjane's Instagram and webpage, I saw all of her jewelry and art pieces, and fell in love with her work. She has unique, different, beautiful pieces, I looked at the store schedule and it showed Monday-Friday 9am to 4pm, I got a little sad because I work those hours, but decided to call her to ask if maybe she could stay a little longer one day. I called her and she was the sweetest, she told me she could even open on a Saturday for me, and she did! I made an appointment for Saturday at 11:00am, got there at 11:05am and she was already there. The place is spacious, lots of light and her work is display beautifully throughout her studio. I find her prices very reasonable for what they are, be sure to ask for last season specials, I bought 3 beautiful necklaces and a bracelet from her last season for about half the price. Her newest collection is beautiful, I got a couple of them (including the necklace I fell in love with). She was very nice, has a beautiful Spanish accent, Thank you Maryjane for opening on a Saturday for me and for the amazing work you do!
