Second Harvest depends on volunteers to help with deliveries, sorting food, and running events. I volunteered at Second Harvest for the first time this week in both helping with deliveries and sorting food in the warehouse. Working on the truck was great because you can see firsthand the people who are benefiting from the service. It feels good to do something tangible to help people in need. The warehouse is a much more solitary activity, but there is a lot of work to be done to portion donated food, so it was great to lend a hand. The annual Turkey Drive is coming on Dec 6-7 and Dec 13-14, 2008. You can volunteer or help by buying a frozen turkey at participating Loblaws locations where volunteers will collect and deliver them to people in need.

The volunteer jobs range from food sorting to truck assistance to aquagrow farms to receptionist. I volunteer there for about 4 or 5 years on and off (since my high school school years). I earned many of my volunteer hours here. I did many things such as sorting canned food, cutting carrots, building boxes, taped fillex boxes and sorting tapped boxes. I got to know people on my shelf through talking and listening to them and their conversations.

A nice little community centre out near the edge of the city…read more I came here today for a grant-writing workshop with Ontario Trillium Foundation, and was quite surprised to find that this space is tucked into the back of a larger complex near the city border. From what I was told, it was converted from a warehouse into a meeting/event space through OTF funding, and it certainly bears the fruits of their grants. The site has been reconverted into a space with a nice stage, waiting area and a lot of seating potential. While I found it to be a bit too out-of-the-way for my tastes, it definitely has a lot of potential. The owners need to really publicize and hype this place up so more people in the Dixie/Malton area know about it. I'll definitely check this space out again in the future if there's an event being held there.

But i do donate here often. The staff working here is very friendly and nice they are just short of workers so we cannot get frustrated at them its not their fault.
