Follow the Yellow Path [Louisville KY]…read more We originally thought of just visiting Muhammad Ali's gravesite at Cave Hill Cemetery but when the security personnel at the gate gave us a map of the cemetery we saw that Colonel Sanders's gravesite was also in this same location. The founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has his final resting place right in the heart of the Cave Hill Cemetery. From the main entrance, at the corner of Baxter Ave and E Broadway, we followed the road into the cemetery for 1.5 miles. Follow the solid yellow line (the map will show the color yellow route). The line ends at Col. Sanders grave in Section 33 right on the road. Colonel Sanders was the most beloved gentleman in Kentucky and holds a significant place in American Culture. His grave was marked by a bust that was created by his daughter Margaret. He was 90 when he passed away in 1980. It was a nice, unique and memorable experience. Review #3907

I didn't find the Garden but I did find the historical marker that describes the site and the…read morehistory. It is located at the corner of Bradley and Presidents. The marker reads, "The Grotto (D.X. Murphy & Bros., Architects) was dedicated in 1927 as a place for contemplation on St. Joseph Infirmary grounds. Two-story, half-domed, concrete apse is faced on inside with stones and rubble. Modeled on natural grotto at Lourdes, SW France, where Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858." And on the reverse, "Their statues adorned Louisville Grotto. Masonry walls enclose Grotto's Garden. Fourteen arched niches, since filled in, held mosaics of Stations of the Cross, events from end of Jesus' life. Dwane Beckhart painted modern replacements. Named state landmark by Ky. Just around the corner from Churchill Downs, this marker in front of a home gives the history of…read morethe structure and one of its residents. On one side, "Italianate-style home built circa 1891. Owned by jockey Roscoe Goose from 1913 to 1971. Residential development in area thrived due to Churchill Downs. Goose benefited from the growing popularity of horseracing and increasing jockeys' wages. House reflected the rising status of sport. First Louisville native to win the KY Derby." And on the other side, "In 1913, Goose rode Donerail to victory with 91-1 odds, biggest longshot winner in Derby history. Goose retired from racing after an accident in 1918. Remained in the thoroughbred industry as a trainer and owner. Mentored young jockeys and opened his home to many. An early inductee to the KY Athletic Hall of Fame, Goose is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery." Roscoe Tarleton Goose was born near Louisville on January 21, 1891. Roscoe Goose also acted as an adviser to buyers of horses and served as president of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Breeders Association for three years. Success in racing and wise management of his money made him a very wealthy man. In 1963, Roscoe Goose was one of the inaugural class of inductees in the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame. He is honored with an engraved bronze plaque on display at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center's Freedom Hall in Louisville. [Review 13492 overall, 811 of 2020.]

So right around Churchhill down there is this mile marker with the golden goose history on it. He was a jockey that they are celebrating for his biggest long shot victory. So it was cool to see and read about his history and obviously has passed away now and he is buried in Louisville's famous cemetery Cave Hill

Public Art [Louisville KY]…read more This public art can be located in the center of Louisville's Bourbon District. The Bourbon District is a gathering space for locals and visitors and is a walkable urban experience for anyone looking for a taste of Kentucky. The Barrel is meant to be walked through (which I did)... a worthy iG insta photo-op in Downtown Louisville. Barrel on Main has five hoops with rings made of a type of corrosion resistant steel and black powder coated aluminum, the giant art installation is almost nine times the size of a typical 53-gallon barrel and was inspired by those of actual oak barrels used to store and age Kentucky's local spirits. Next to the Barrel is an interpretive sign with a little history of why this Whiskey Row was called the Bourbon District. Parking may be challenging to find in this area. Just fun to see some of Louisville's public arts. Review #3903

At first glance it looks like some weird, random public art piece, but when you step back, you realize they are the hoops of a bourbon barrel! Appropriately, it's titled "The Barrel" and it is located in the center of the Bourbon District. A very cool piece of art that's a popular spot for photos. Sculpture or a man whom I've been unable to identify right in the theatre square portion of…read moredowntown Lousiville right across from the side entrance of the brown hotel. This whole little block and area is full of some cool public art and sculptures. Im sure this man represents someone that maybe as a local I should recognize but don't. Or maybe he just a man hailing a taxi or trying to buy tickets for a theatre. Either way it's always cool to see sculptures and public art in the city.

Oddly located next to Justins' House of Bourbon and across from the White Castle, this marker…read morepoints out the history of this church that is no longer at this location as it has moved a few blocks away. It is slightly obscured by a tree that has overgrown and needs trimming. The marker has text on both sides. The front reads, "Second African Baptist Church, now Green Street Baptist Church, was formally organized here, Sept. 29, 1844. As was usual in the years of slavery, the founding members had the sponsorship of a protection committee, appointed by First Baptist Church (now Walnut Street). The first pastor was Elder George Wells, 1844-1850." and on the reverse, "The church was more than a religious experience for African Americans. It was also a school, a social center, and a training ground in group cooperation. In 1848 the church relocated to Green Street (now Liberty) and took its current name in 1860. Church moved to its new edifice at 519 East Gray Street, September 29, 1930. Over." It is marker number 1949 and was erected in 1994 by the Green Street Baptist Church, the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Department of Highways. There is metered street parking nearby.
