Historical Marker #2072 on Main and 4th is titled "Kentucky Fugitives to Canada". It tells the…read morehistory of two slaves, Thornton and Lucie (aka Ruthy) Blackburn, who escaped to Canada. They escaped slavery in Louisville in 1831 and fled to Detroit, Michigan. However, they were captured in 1833 and ordered to be sent back to Louisville, which sparked the "The Blackburn Riots of 1833," Detroit's first racial riot. They were able to escape and were smuggled to Canada, where they started Canada's first taxi company in Toronto in 1837. I think this would be a great Canadian Heritage Minute! Oddly located next to Justins' House of Bourbon and across from the White Castle, this marker…read morepoints out the history of this church that is no longer at this location as it has moved a few blocks away. It is slightly obscured by a tree that has overgrown and needs trimming. The marker has text on both sides. The front reads, "Second African Baptist Church, now Green Street Baptist Church, was formally organized here, Sept. 29, 1844. As was usual in the years of slavery, the founding members had the sponsorship of a protection committee, appointed by First Baptist Church (now Walnut Street). The first pastor was Elder George Wells, 1844-1850." and on the reverse, "The church was more than a religious experience for African Americans. It was also a school, a social center, and a training ground in group cooperation. In 1848 the church relocated to Green Street (now Liberty) and took its current name in 1860. Church moved to its new edifice at 519 East Gray Street, September 29, 1930. Over." It is marker number 1949 and was erected in 1994 by the Green Street Baptist Church, the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Department of Highways. There is metered street parking nearby. Tucked to the side entrance of one of the many halls on campus this sculpture was created by an alumnus named Nancy deCamillis in 1960. Overall a cool and nice statue that's smaller in stature. The campus has a couple cool public art sculptures to check out which adds to the overall appeal of their campus.

Located in the main part of Shelbyville, this two-sided marker points out some antebellum and Civil…read moreWar history. It is near Stargazer Plaza. On the front, the marker reads "The Blockhouse. Built in 1858 by townspeople for civil defense against guerrillas. Located in middle of intersection. Measured 12 by 18 feet with loopholes on all sides. Manned by townsmen when alarm sounded. Several encounters with gangs attempting to raid town. Torn down in 1870 when civil law and order were assured, and marauders had been dispersed." And on the reverse, "Martin's Raid. In August 1864 Capt. David (Black Dave) Martin and gang attempted raid on courthouse to secure guns stored there. Thomas C. McGrath, merchant, J. H. Masonheimer, tailor, and others defended town against raiders. Three guerrillas were killed, and McGrath wounded. Mission failed. Martin died in 1896 and was buried in Grove Hill cemetery." I love to wonder through old courthouses and see the architecture. The staff is super friendly at…read morethe Henry County Courthouse. C.J. gave us a fabulous tour of this remodeled courthouse with a long history. The Courthouse serves as District Court, Circuit Court and Family Court for three counties in northern Kentucky. The Courthouse is the third courthouse to serve the county. Construction started in 1865 but wasn't completed until 1877, costing &12,500. During 2018 renovations, the historic character of the courthouse was maintained where possible. I loved finding the original tile floors in the main hallways. The original and rare Howard Clock and original witness chair are on display on the main floor. Another display case held County artifacts. The stone walls of the former jail behind the courthouse now house modern restroom facilities. The largest courtroom has maintained some of the original woodwork and character. In addition, two modern courtrooms have been added. One of the most famous trials to take place here was that of Lt. Governor Denhardt, who killed his girlfriend, Verna Taylor, in 1936. The movies "Red Right Hand" and "Just Breath" were recently filmed in the Courthouse. The Courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and is worth a visit for history and architecture lovers. The staff is knowledgeable about the history of the building. C.J. gave me a printed history describing the building. We found free parking directly outside the building.

Structure that works as island divider in the highlands neighborhood of Lousiville Kentucky…read more I'm not sure the reasoning of this structure or what it represents but it has always stuck out to me as it is unique and original. I can't think of anything else in the city that is like this. A creative decorative piece for a road divide. Overall cool piece that locals will probably be able to identify just by looking at a picture of it.
