One of my to spots in the Kansas city Metro for Family Photos or Senior Pics There are a ton of great trails with shaded areas to get great pictures almost anytime of day. The trails are very well maintained, its never too crowded walking around, and it's big enough to spend a few hours walking around and finding awesome spots for long lasting memories. I am readily available at this location. If you are interested in photos at this location, you can email me at shirkmedia.co@gmail.com to set up an appointment! I was a child who leaned on her idols, many of whom were fictional and depicted in books (Pippi Longstocking), fictional and depicted on TV (Morticia Adams), real and depicted on TV (Cher) or real and depicted in books...and wrote the books herself (Laura Ingalls Wilder). For many children, the fantasy lands of art, literature, film, and even TV is integral to a childhood rich with imagination. Happy times, right? As a child, I loved contemplating times of yore. When Christmas gifts of oranges and a metal cup were cherished, for example and meals of gruel were not only tolerated but made into plates of fancy. What does any of this have to do with the Ernie Miller Nature Center, you ask? On Saturday, I brought my young charge, the impressionable and imaginative Miss Z, to Laura Ingalls Wilder's birthday party held here. Although the event listing on the website suggested pioneer attire, I thought that was written in jest. I was pleasantly surprised to see all the girls and their moms show up in costume! Sadly, I had to retire my bonnet years ago, so neither myself nor Miss Z was in costume. Costuming aside, we had a lot of wonderful things in store for us. First, Laura Ingalls Wilder showed up to talk to all of us about the stories of her childhood. I couldn't believe they were able to get her to show up, as I'm sure she's a super busy lady, what with all that butter to churn and fields to tend to...not to mention books to pen. But she entertained us for quite a while and everyone in the room was fascinated with her storytelling ability. How awesome it is for girls to put down their Bratz dolls (or Diva dolls, whatever they're called this year) and think about a super cool pioneer girl who 100 years ago enticed her arch enemy to swim with the leeches when she dissed her homestead. Next, we were divided into groups that got to learn how to make rag dolls (Miss Z's favorite), see how it is to learn in a one-room school house, and join in some country dancin'. Oh, and I totally didn't realize that they had cupcakes back in the pioneer days, but these were appropriately small, in keeping with those leaner times. The "show" ended with one of the nature center's volunteers coming in with a magnificent barred owl on her arm. It didn't seem particularly interested in any of us, but then again, we weren't a bunch of tiny rodents. The grounds of the nature center look like they'd be wonderful for a hiking expedition in better weather. It's open all winter, as you can explore the main building's wildlife exhibits and bird watching. Be sure to keep an eye out for the really fantastic events that go on here regularly.

Nice nature center with lots of programs and events for families. Check their schedule online to see what they've got coming up. There's a small fee to attend the programs (~$3), but it's worth it. Live animals make an appearance at each program and really help hold the kids attention. In the back of the center is a play area for younger kids. Definitely best for 10 and under, but with all the animals to see older kids would have a good time too. A decent sized gift shop is up front. Lots of books, rocks and minerals, stuffed animals, and insect candy are available. There are hiking trails available as well. They are well maintained and are some of our favorites in the area.

Although the nature center wasn't open when we came on a Sunday morning, Ernie Miller was an excellent place for a daybreak hike. I love that the trails are open 24 hours. They were fairly well blazed and kept, including the unpaved areas. We spent about an hour and a half exploring here and it was excellent, almost like an "enchanted forest" vibe in some areas with all of the twisted roots and plenty of shade...it was the perfect place to welcome early autumn weather. I enjoyed this area much more than I expected!

Ask the Community - Ernie Miller Nature Center

Last couple years I have seen "Albino" Robins ("mottled"? speckled") In my back yard. Is this unique to this area? They're beautiful.

Thank you for reaching out to us. We have not had any calls on an 'albino robin' sighting but that is quite a cool sight! We could not find any recent sightings of a robin with your description. However, there have been sightings the past few years… Read more

Sure, Kansas can be limited in some of its landscape offerings, but if you don't take advantage of what's right in front of you, then you might miss the beauty that is many of our area lakes & parks. Kill Creek Park is just that beauty. There are trails of various difficulty, but none that are so strenuous that you could not do them with more than moderate effort. You can hike around a forest, around a lake, or you could just hike out in the prairie. There are multiple trails, all of which are well-marked, and they blend together at certain spots. Mountain/trail bikers might share the space at times but I have always had pleasant sharers of the paths. The trails are well-maintained with openings here & there for power to run through and the overall elevation changes are minimal. We've done the 'Outer Hank' several times and the circuit takes less than two hours. Wear your hiking shoes as some of the trails can have tricky steps and keep your eyes open to see nature in front of you. The observation tower is 3+ levels offering different views, all of which open in any direction. There is even an elevator to the top that is in service for most of the year. I suggest an evening view to the west for an optimal Kansas sunset, many of which can't be replicated. If you want mountains or beach, then you won't find it here. But if you want the peaceful, pastoral open skies of the West, then Kill Creek offers you just a taste of nature can do.

You have to hike in for sure, but the pond on property is wonderful: clear, clean, and colorful. There are many picnic tables throughout the reserve, and the wild nature of the place is worth the visit. Quite a few evenings I've stayed longer than the sun was willing to, and found myself walking through the actual prairie at sundown - which I'm not ashamed to say is formidable with the right company. I once witnessed an assault there, but the lady told me it was her brother that did it, so she didn't need any assistance. Barring that, it really is a wild and wonderful place to spend the day. It can get a tad bit crowded on the weekends, and the path can and does get congested, but there is so much to walk that it shouldn't be too much of a problem. There's one spot on the map that gets a little treacherous: a downward sloped and rocky hill, so take it easy down that. But otherwise, it's a myocardial wonderland! Get a good pair of walkin' boots, a camera, and possibly a fishing pole, and get out there!

This little slice of heaven will transport you away from the surrounding suburban sprawl and into an outdoor playground that provides an up close and personal look at what an undisturbed Kansas countryside would look like. I usually park on the east side of the park, around Mill Creek Parkway and Ridgeview, and walk the nearby trail. It's about a two-ish mile loop that you'll share with other walkers, joggers and some bikers. It takes you through a wooded stream area, then through swamp and finally through a field of native grasses. You also get to walk through a tunnel that will take you underneath a local railway. If you're lucky, you'll get to see some local wildlife. Pets are welcome, as long as they're well behaved and on a leash. If you're biking, the trail does extend both to the north and to the south. I haven't partaken either way, so I'm not much help, however I have heard that the northern trail will take you close to Shawnee Mission Park. You might want to double check this, but it sounds like like fun. Regardless, my biking friends say this is one of their favorite places to ride. I highly recommend for walkers and bikers of all ages, especially when the Kansas City weather is right.

I've taken my family there just to walk/hike around the paved trails which are seemingly endless with a dog and toddler. When I go on my own or with friends to bike, you'll find the end a lot faster, but it's still 17 miles or so of wonderful trail along the creek. On countless trips here, we've seen deer, heard coyotes, saw a sneaky copperhead snake, a beaver scurrying back to the water, owls and hawks, and the most memorable, an open field with more fireflies flickering than I've ever seen in my life. You'll also find big Kansas sunsets out here year round, along with more hills than one might expect. I'll say this, if you're a cyclist, it's enjoyable to fly around here but be aware this is primarily a walking/jogging path for everyone else so throw a little bell on, slow down a bit when approaching people and or call out as you come around. Most do, but some don't and it's kind of jarring especially when we're out with our almost-two-year-old toddling around. (Side note, I got a bike trailer for my daughter and this is the perfect, safe place to try it out.) In warmer months you'll find enough water and bathroom stations around, but as expected it can be difficult to find on those winter warm up days. Shoutout to the Parks & Rec team of years past, along with Gary Haller who shares the name of this popular trail for his dedication to making it a reality. I feel like nature is often forgotten and overlooked in our world, but a simple, beautiful trail like this has people eager to be out exploring their peaceful surroundings.

We laugh every time we go there when it's freezing cause we see all the rocks scattered on the top of the ice on the lake. I guess people try to toss rocks on the frozen lake to find out how big & how far they can toss the rock. Hahaha. I'm kinda tempted to try that the next time. They do have an area by the entrance of the parking lot where you can pile up real Christmas trees after the holidays. Not sure what they do with them afterwards, but it's cool that they have a drop off area. When we dropped off our 2.5' tree there was at least a 5' high & 15' wide pile. I was laughing cause our dinky lil tree was so manini (small) compared to the others that were about 6-8' tall. Aside from the trails & Christmas tree drop off, this is a perfect parking lot to learn to drive in snow... as I found out the hard way. Hehehe... nervous giggling. Never driven in snow before & it's waaay different that driving on rain soaked roads. Well, hope to get back to the beautiful park soon. A Hui Hou!!
