He gave me solutions when other contractors told me to figure out an alternative (e.g. two previous contractors told me to buy a certain type of vanity based on the location of a pipe and John opened the wall and said, "Nope, I can move or reroute the pipe, there isn't any electrical or anything in the way that prevents it"). I have a handful of examples like that, and it made me realize that the others just wanted to do everything the easy way. He also found a potentially catastrophic problem under one of the showers that had previously been missed. I answered in detail by performing a financial analysis of his quote. He quoted $875 for a small project that requires modest supplies and 3 hours of labor. I had it done for $300 twice in the past . Even if the supplies cost $125, which they don't, it works out at $250 per hour of labor. I told Tim his rates were unreasonable. And I was looking to hire a painter, not a Fortune 500 CEO at $250 an hour! I contacted two other contractors and they acted very professional and quoted less than half of what Curtner Painting quoted. Do you know what Tim told me in the follow up email after I gave him full answer and analyzed his quote? I quote: " I priced it on the high end, so you would pick another contractor. While walking around the house, I had a bad feeling about you". I never had a contractor before who developed any feelings about me before, let alone bad ones. Being caught with the super inflated quote, Tim admitted to inflate the price. And he did it as a sore loser. People don't double market rates in their quote and act as sore losers after losing to a reasonable contractors by saying "they priced it in the high end, so the customer picks up another contractor". If the company does not want business they say they are booked for the next few months and don't waste time on providing a quote. Two other contractors did not have "bad feelings" about me, and provided reasonable quotes. I am happy to go with either one of them. Stay away from Curtner Painting. Dishonest and unprofessional.
