First to review this store that I haven't been able to forget since I last visited four long years ago? OH YES!! I used to be a regular patron of Mystic Curio, which was located a few stores down from Erzulies on Royal. RIP Mystic Curio! Four years ago, Erzulies had the last precious stock of oils from Mystic Curio, which I believe closed right around the time of Katrina (I understand the owner is happily retired in Florida). Sadly, the oils no longer exist, and Mystic Curio's owner remains a cherished memory (he'd pull out an oil to recommend to you after talking to you for just a few minutes...my favorites were Musk Royale, Voodoo Nights, Black Rose and Cleopatra). But Erzulies' oils deliver! There is a fabulous woman (maybe the owner) who greets you as soon as you pass the threshold. She is there to answer any questions you may have and suggest various fragrances. I think she has a sixth sense and can tell what scent will work for you not unlike the owner of Mystic Curio. There's a fair amount of variety to choose from, but I zeroed in on my favorite, which I had run out of, as well as a newer oil that she showed me. You can also get readings here as well as various other esoteric needs fulfilled. It need be reiterated that the owner is so friendly and approachable that you feel you can ask any question, no matter how clueless you are. I think it's important for one to feel comfortable with the occult (rather than frightened, that is). Nothing intimidating here! Pure white magic in the best sense of the word. I have no doubt you will walk out of here just as satisfied as I have been on my past two visits. read more

What a delight to find such a fun, funky, friendly shop on my recent foray to the Big Easy! They seem to have a little bit of EVERYTHING voodoo . . . From tourist novelty stuff to items probably best reserved for the skilled practitioner. I've visited a number of voodoo/occult shops in my travels - Some just obvious "tourist traps" and others where the staff seemed to be eyeing you as a possible sacrifice at their next ritual session. At Erzulie's everybody was friendly AND knowledgeable about the products they have. If you're lucky (hmmm, bet they have a potion for THAT) the owner (think her name is Anna) will be there to share her immeasurable insight into the voodoo realm - Besides, she's an absolute hoot to chat with and she provided us with a ton of New Orleans lore & information not contained in any guidebook! I bought a "Fast Money & Prosperity" gris-gris bag (let you know how it works - SOON I hope!) and my friend picked up a beautiful Marie Laveau's "Voodoo Love Soap" that smells even prettier than it looks. (The TSA agent gave the soap an "extra thorough" examination, but I really think she just couldn't bear to put it down after smelling it!) The next time you are strolling the French Quarter I can highly recommend Erzulie's Authentic Voodoo shop as a worthwhile stop between eating muffalettas and beignets . . . Let's just say I will be shopping here again! I ordered the Fast Luck and Road Opening Gris Gris bag, from Erzulie's, on Friday night. I emailed Erzulie's right after I placed my order to say how terrible my boss was (gave my boss' first name) and that I've been looking for a new job for over 5 months - so whatever they could do to expedite my much needed order would be greatly appreciated. They replied quickly (check your spam/junk email) to let me know everything is handcrafted AND they would ship it out Saturday. I received my order Monday (from NOLA to Chicago, wow!!) with my mail. Yesterday my horrible boss left me alone, the whole day! This morning, before work, I started to activate my Gris Gris Bag with the supplied oil and powder, and wrote my list per the instructions. Today that same boss did not add any tasks to my already overwhelming list. As a matter of fact, they said they would be taking away some work they had "temporarily" given me 4 months ago. I have used Erzulie's products off and on since 1999/2000 and am always impressed with Anna's (owner) commitment to high-quality, attention to detail and respectable customer care. This dedication is instilled in her staff, who are always knowledgeable, friendly and timely. Throughout the years, I have used various products, this time around I got, the Cosmic Cleanse Goat Milk Soap, the Love, Passion, Beauty and Healing Peace and Calming Oils and the Love & Passion Candle. I was excited when I got my box in the mail, and all the products arrived in exemplary condition shortly after I placed my order. I did not use any of the products as a part of a ritual or spell. Since the products are already ritualized, they can also be used regularly as you would normally use them for the product to affect changes. I highly recommend reading through Erzulie's FAQ section on the website for more details. The website's FAQ provides clear and easy to understand information, description and definitions. Cosmic Cleanse Soap - The hand-made soap bar is huge, lasts a long time and smells great. The bar itself is gorgeous with a fun marbleized effect. I loved looking it at. Made with pure organic goats milk, soothing cocoa butter and a delicate combination of essential oils such as, lemongrass, tulsi, tree oil, jasmine (to name a few of the awesome ingredients) the Cosmic Cleanse Soap provided both aromatic and healing properties that promoted calm, nourished my skin and had a cleansing effect. Love, Passion, Beauty and Healing Peace and Calming Oils - I decided on which to wear each morning depending how I felt and the roller ball applied the oils smoothly and gives a great way to control the amount I would use. The scents are derived from essential oils and are not overpowering, so my friends didn't smell me before they saw me . The scents last throughout the day and I did not need to re-apply. I cant wait to finish either bottles so I can get the stone that is added to help to help enhance healing vibes. Love & Passion Candle - I use the candle at night to help unwind, and re-energize for the next day. The scent is a light floral with a hint of spice. The candle burns cleanly and did not spatter or smoke. I always enjoyed visiting the Root Queen at her original location but have not been back to New Orleans in quite sometime to visit her current location. PURELY BEAUTIFUL, CREATIVELY POSTIVE ENERGY - in all ways! Listen: I live in Los Angeles, where there is a quasi-spiritual/psychic-type of shop or service around every back alleyway. Anna, the 'Root Queen' and proprietress of Erzulie's, is also absolutely the real deal. As stated above, I've met so many charlatans that am now usually quite jaded about people who claim that they are any kind of spiritualist. But not Anna - in fact, she doesn't claim that at all when you meet her. Not only is she humble, obviously caring & friendly but she is incredibly well-versed in spiritual knowledge of many diverse kinds - not just Voodoo (although that is obviously her area of expertise & deep wisdom) These qualities also infuse her shop & products with a lovely feeling of 'all are welcome'. Being an obsessive perfumista who even had the luck & grace to make a journey to Grasse, France (the mecca of perfumery) and toured some of the world's finest perfumeries, I can absolutely say that Anna's creations are of the highest order - truly amongst the finest I have ever encountered. Not an exaggeration. It is immediately obvious the attention to detail that is exacted, as well as her use of the highest quality ingredients. This is in addition to the blessings & personal, loving energy put into each and every creation that she literally hand-crafts herself. I'm serious - you can almost literally *feel* the positivity that starts to glow & warm upon your skin when you apply them. One minute, you're walking down a sunny street, debating on popping into Pat O'Brien's across the street, the next minute you've stepped into a voodoo world. I love how there are so many interesting things crammed in here that you must walk a little slower to take it all in and also not knock anything over. There are candles, cards and things I don't even know the names for. It was hard to decide on small gifts for people, but I think this would be a great place to spend some time and learn a few things. read more

I'm not a huge Voodoo person. There are definitely folks out there who are way more knowledgeable about this type of thing than I am. Even so, I definitely appreciate the Voodoo culture as it pertains to New Orleans and I do respect the practice. As soon as we walked on the door, a very nice lady explained what everything was and how it worked. She pointed to the oils and told me that they had some that were already open, if I needed to sample them before buying. After thanking her for her help, I walked around and got a feel for the place. There are all kinds of nice things you can buy such as healing stones, oils, herbs, Voodoo dolls and candles. On this particular day I was looking for a prayer candle, but unfortunately they didn't have what I was looking for. Not their fault at all, I stopped in here just on chance to see if they would have it. Like others have said, you can get readings in the back of the store, but I'm not really sure what all that entails. It's very off-putting to be in a shop where you literally CANNOT touch a single item on the shelves. The caretaker was on constant "repeat" as people walked in, "please do not touch those items" over and over and over. Listening to the constant drone of it was painful and annoying. We learned early that everything in the store is off limits, so we kept our hands to ourselves - but having to listen to the non-stop reprimanding was just uncomfortable in a shopping environment. How about putting all of the "no touch" items in display cases where access requires the shopkeeper? Or maybe REALLY BIG, colorful signs on *each and every case* stating "DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING" (the current signs are very ambiguous and tiny). I appreciate that the items are sacred, and ritually made. But this is after all a retail storefront, not a Voodoo Temple, yes? I found other (just as authentic) shops where the proprietors not only encouraged photos, but allowed handling of the merchandise (noting it would not be "defiled" by such handling). Yes, it is possible to be BOTH authentic AND friendly - and acknowledging that photo taking does not "steal the mojo" from whatever magic you have manifested. Yes, there are other cheesy/touristy voodoo doll shops in the Quarter which are quite lame -but there are also heartfelt, true ones nearby that do not have a laundry list of restrictions in order to shop there. read more

I guess if you really beleive a bag of herbs is going to improve your life, then it's worth paying $10 for it, but if you're just there for fun, or for unique souvenirs for your love-sick friends at home, it's not really worth it. One of my favorite places to visit in New Orleans! Used to visit the store all the time, and now that I no longer live there I order online. Staff is very knowledgable and always answers all my questions. The store itself is beautiful and has actual alters! The products are simply amazing. Great kits, and oils but the soaps are the big draw for me. I have very sensitive skin and can hardly tollerate anything with fragrance. But these soaps are so amazing and high quality that I can use them, smell great and not break out. This is not your Hollywood Voodoo store. Its more a place of peace, beauty, and some of the best homemade products on the market. I have been a customer for year using the Internet and I make a trip to the store once a year. I love the handcrafted perfumes. If I have to pick one item I love the most it would be the handcrafted soap they leave the skin so soft. How many Voodoo stores are pink and purple with glitter leading you up to the store? Great shop! I went here as part of a voodoo tour and decided to come back a few days later because it was so intriguing. The woman who works at the shop(Natalie I think?) is kind and knows her voodoo! If you decide to go to Erzulie's, you have to make sure that you ask for assistance to touch pretty much anything, not because they're mean, but because EVERYTHING in Erzulie's is hand-made and authentic. Some stuff may be a bit pricey, but if you're a practitioner of voodoo then there is truly no better shop in NOLA. I'm not a personal practitioner but I was feeling hopeful and bought a Papa Legba soap that encourages good luck and new opportunities. It was only about $13 and the soap smelled SO amazing. There's no additives in the soap or preservatives in the soap, either. This is your one-stop voodoo shop! read more

Over Thanksgiving week, I made my first visit to New Orleans and found my way to Erzulie's. Without any expectations, I entered the shop after visits to several hokey voodoo tourist shops. And what a difference! From the moment I entered the shop, I felt at ease. The shop keeper was so helpful in explaining what different items were for and how I might make use of them for my specific situation. She was so insightful and caring that I decided to do a reading with her. During the session, she was attentive and gave me guidance that I've already put into practice here at home! Erzulie's is one of the most beautiful shops in the French Quarter. Their inventory is artistically displayed, and they have actual voudou altars in the store. The staff are so helpful and they also offer readings if you need more specific advice. Anna will blow your mind with her accuracy and insight into your personal situations! I have been a customer of Erzulies for more years than I even want to recall! I can't believe I haven't written a review for this amazing place before. Both my mom and I have used numerous items from the store and remain loyal customers. Only the highest quality would keep me spending my money there when I could buy less expensive, lower quality stuff elsewhere. Having lived and traveled extensively, I've been to many spiritual stores around the country, I can honestly say that Erzulies is my favorite. The reason is simple, high quality products and exceptional staff. The moment you walk into the space, you can feel a warmth and charge. I've never seen anyone there treated rudely, including people I probably wouldn't have the patience for. Every person I've encountered who works has been so helpful and very supportive. Several times, I've felt like I had my own little therapy session, they listen so well. I've been in the store enough to know a lot of the merchandise (even before I moved to the city). I've always been very impressed with the care and details that go into every aspect of all the products. It's clear the quality of every product I've ever used. The owner, Anna, inspires confidence with her knowledge and her constant attention to detail. You can tell how much she cares about her customers and products. Everything has always been amazingly packaged and the ingredients are amazing. You just have to smell things on the tester table to know the quality. The energy in the store is lovely and I always find it recharges me. My mom has been buying Intuition in various forms since 2005 and she's super picky about anything going on her skin. I have a hard time choosing one thing that is my favorite but I have never gone wrong with any of the amazing essential oils. I loved the Hindu ritual meditative kit I used after a loss. It was extremely beneficial to help me on the road to healing. I can't say enough about everything I've ever gotten from Erzulies. Look - I get that you feel like you're part of some clandestine club because you're into Voodoo and the tourists aren't - and yup, I am such a tourist. But I purposefully sought out your shop because I wanted a legitimate experience, not a watered-down, buy-a-souvenier experience. However, as soon as I got there, I felt more ripped off than ever. When we walked in, the woman working there gave us a broad sentence about the shop. She then stared at us until finally we gave up on the idea of a tour or of any explanation of anything on the shelves and just walked around on our own. She then continued on to make assumptions about us by talking about "checking into" the store via our iPhones in order to get 10% off. Groovy - still not what I was looking for. I tried my best to ask prodding questions that would get her to give us a small synopsis of anything interesting related to voodoo, but she just stared back emptily and gave us snide remarks about things that were "clearly" beyond our understanding. Lady, I'm in medical school and yet I came to your shop because I genuinely wanted to learn more about the voodoo belief system. Couldn't you have atleast shared part of your passion and described it to me instead of snubbing your nose at my friends and I? I was truly disappointed that we were treated exactly like the tourists we are. I had hoped that simply by looking up reviews on this place and demonstrating true interest in the religion, she would have been kind enough to explain the items to us. However, either she was too judgemental of our group or she genuinely didn't know enough to tell us - either way, I was disappointed and instead wished I had gone to a Voodoo temple for a more explicit explanation of Voodoo. Really cool little shop in the French Quarter. Nice and friendly staff.

Please don't be fooled by the shops smaller size. The shop is filled with wonderful items ranging from seven dollar small bottles of oil to 45 dollar statues and everything in between. Lots of beautifully made small viles of amazingly scented oils containing trinkets and passages written inside for your use. They also had an extensive selection of different handmade soaps with different scents, ingredients and purposes. They also had lots of bath salts and perfumes all with special ingredients for special purposes . I did not get the feel that I was in a tourist trap type of voodoo shop , it felt like a genuine store for those who enjoy to practice. My only complaint was that I did not bring more money. It's an absolutely beautiful store with absolutely charming employees!! read more
