White Tank Mountain Regional Park - Waterfall! (It just hasn't rained so it's not quite a waterfall)

White Tank Mountain Regional Park

Looking for a fun, scenic adventure that almost anyone can enjoy? Head to White Tank Mountain…read moreRegional Park and take on the Waterfall Trail! The trail is mostly paved, easy to follow, and packed with beautiful desert scenery. Once you reach the end, the real adventure begins. Climb the stone steps, scramble carefully over the boulders, and explore the waterfall area. During certain times of the year, you may even find water collected in the pool below. Be sure to look up! There are two additional natural pools tucked into the rocks above your head, with plants growing along the cliffs and birds making themselves right at home. Keep watch for the local hawk that loves to perch dramatically on top of a nearby saguaro cactus. The true treasures of this trail are the ancient petroglyphs created by the Hohokam people. Many can be seen inside the protected, marked areas, but sharp-eyed explorers may spot even more etched into the surrounding rocks. They are incredible reminders of the people who lived in this desert long before us. I take nearly every visitor we have on this hike, no matter the season. It is one of my favorite places to show off the beauty, history, and adventure of Arizona! There are bathrooms and picnic tables near the trailhead, so pack some water, bring a picnic, and make a day of it!

I used to go there every morning at around six when they opened and I'd hike like crazy. I love it and the business part of it is really good lots of good people. I wish I could find some of the pictures right now that I had taken, but I can't but believe me it's absolutely stunning up there. Charlie K

We came here for the first time mid June with a group of friends and really loved the campsite…read more They have large and clean porta potties available with fully stocked toilet paper. Unfortunately, we couldn't have a fire due to fire restrictions. However, we were able to bring our own gas-powered fire pit. I'm glad my husband checked the website a few days prior to our reservation, otherwise we wouldn't have known. It would be nice to get informed by email if you have a reservation about fire restrictions, because if we didn't bring our blackstone to make our food, I would have been very upset. Before arriving, I did some research on the black bear shack that our friends told us about, but sadly found out they are not at this campground anymore. The road coming in is extremely bumpy and rough. When leaving the campground, I recommend going left instead of right. Our cars needed a very good car wash after! The campground is very beautiful. The weather was perfect; in the 50s at night and high 70s in the afternoon. I would definitely camp here again.

There was no potable water. Had to empty water bottles to have water to wash hand. Was advertised…read moreto have potable water and grills and firepits. 1 of 3 sites we rented had a grill. Needs a solar motion light for restroom. One was okay but others were bad. We stayed 4 days with no water for hand washing if had known would have prepared differently.

Stayed here at Site 14, 6/18-6/21 to celebrate boyfriend's birthday and had an amazing time!!…read more Spacious with enough room for two tents. Picnic table was in the sun most of the day so would recommend pop up gazebo or umbrella in the summer. Plenty of room to post up around the fire pit! Key amenities: Bathrooms close by. Multiple bathrooms around campgrounds. Each one has a potable water station outside! Firewood and Ice for sale (can pay with card but easier with cash!) Trail directly to the lake! Tips: Bring hand soap (hand sanitizer only at the bathroom). Only 2 cars per site and hosts come by at night to pick up the $10 payment for the second vehicle (card acceptable!) Hosts were SO kind and campground is very well taken care of. Thank you for having us!

They have 2 trails connected to the campsite. One that is .5miles goes under the road to the lake, and one that is 1mile and goes up the mountain for the lake views. The campsite director did mention there are ravens so you do need to hide your food if you're going to be away. There were some ants, my dog did get bit up by some sort of bugs on her stomach. The campsite was $30 for the night + $10 for an extra car. I highly recommend this place! It was so peaceful

When I finally arrived, I was greeted by Pat. She showed me where I would be stationed with my teardrop trailer. The campground is right on the HWY 60 so you will get a lot of traffic noise and train traffic. Because I arrived late (2pm) instead of 10 am a few openings were all towards the back of the campground. I thought it would be a bad thing but it helped a bit with the noise, although the noise didn't bother me much anyway. Each camping spot had a spigot. I was in an area that was part gravel and dirt. The Historic Hotel has great history! What I found fascinating was the hotel was moved from its original spot to across the street, I believe in the 1940's. There are a few rooms upstairs and believe it or not the bar salon was originally upstairs. The wood upstairs is mostly all original and some windows as well.

This particular area in and around the town of Gila bend has so many sites of both ancient and…read morerecent cultural interests. Although considered a Hohokam rock art site, This area is on the extreme western edge of the Hohokam cultural area. East of the area, petroglyphs take on more typical Hohokam characteristics, while petroglyphs farther west take on more Patayan characteristics. Found here and in nearby areas of the Gila River are petroglyphs of Archaic origin. The whole area along the Colorado and Gila River has.large amount of indigenous culture from cultural markings to ruins. In terms of more recent Western pioneer involvement this area bears the inscriptions of historic passers-by. Juan Bautista de Anza passed near here during his 1775-1776 expedition, followed by the Mormon Battalion in the 1840s, the Butterfield Overland Mail, and countless numbers of pioneers. During World War II, General George Patton used this area as headquarters for tank training. There's also the Oatman pioneer cemetery. There is little protection for the area from vandals and there is some push to make the area on National Monument.

To get there, just follow the sign. The road is paved but entering the Painted Rock Petroglyph it will be dirt. The entrance fee is $3 and there is a box to pay to get in. It is on an honor system. Along the area, there are desert camping amenities and camping overnight is $8. The Painted Rock Petroglyph Site is magnificent on how the first people who habitat the land recorded their living. There are more recent carvings from people who passed through the site and there are informational plaques around that tell the history of the area.
