Hike is open. We went on a hike on January 17,2026. Crowded. Really easy hike. Be ready to pass 7 broads prior you will see a beautiful waterfall. I walked barefoot and loved it. Bring dogs, kids and have fun.

This has actually reopened. We went there yesterday, July 2025. Gorgeous hike with a great mix of canyon and ocean views. You'll feel like you're walking through a peaceful little forest--there's plenty of shade thanks to the trees. There's a small parking lot with a $12 fee, but you can also try parking on PCH just before or after the trailhead (if you're lucky). A porta potty is available at the start. The first stretch goes through a residential area, but you'll hit the actual trail soon after. Along the way, you'll cross a few small streams, but it's easy to stay dry with a bit of care. The highlight is the waterfall about an hour in--a perfect stopping point. Don't bother trying to go further; there's no real trail beyond that, and nothing more to see. Highly recommend for a light-to-moderate hike.

Since it's been raining here in LA, I wanted to see an active waterfall and this hike truly did not disappoint!! The hike was about 4 miles there and back. We also packed up and ate our lunches on a rock while enjoying the waterfall. We went on a Thursday morning at 8am since the parking lot is small (fit ~10 cars and $12). It does get filled up quickly especially on weekends. You can also park on PCH but just be aware of parking signs. I recommend going on a weekday morning if you can as we barely saw anyone during our hike. We mainly saw people as we were leaving. Be prepared to cross some creeks and get your feet wet but be careful as it can get muddy and slippery. We saw an older couple using hiking poles so they had no issue but we managed without it! Overall, try to go during the spring time because the waterfalls are beautiful!!! We saw a couple of big dogs along our way, just make sure they're on leashes so they don't go wandering off as the trail is pretty narrow :)

The parking lot is $12 and fits only 9 cars. You can park by PCH for free but get there early.

Escondido Falls is one of the best hikes along the coast of Malibu. The hike is a relatively easy 4 mile round trip, if you do both waterfalls, it leads you to one of the best waterfalls in Southern California. The waterfalls are beautiful now with so much rain we had. The first waterfall is easy to access, and the second waterfall is challenging and should only be attempted with caution and with the right shoes, (don't do it if your shoes don't have good grip) we saw people falling.. Has a bathroom right next to the parking lot, to parked is $12.00 only fit 9 cars so be there early if you want to park there. We park by the PCH for free got there before 7 am. Recommended Hiking Poles Hiking Boots with good grip Gloves for the ropes Enjoy the trails and please leave no trace.

Went here yesterday, and I personally enjoyed the trail! If I'm not mistaken, I believe you have to pass at least 6 water pass ways with boulders and logs (some are slippery). When I reached the waterfall, it wasn't much water, which was okay but it was definitely a nice view. I didn't get in the water since I was hesitant, but I did see a few people get in the water. Upon arriving, my friend and I parked on the side walk across the entrance of the trail because the paid parking was short and full! So we just ended up crossing the street to begin the trail! People are very kind and respectful which is a plus! Definitely dog friendly! The service could be a bit better, but it's very slow when you get to the starting point heading to the entrance to the falls, so please keep this in mind when you decide to arrive at Escondido.

We came down from LA to try the Escondido Canyon Hike Trail on an incredibly hot Saturday. Coming from LA, the weather in Malibu was so much better and much of the hike was in shade, which is a big plus! The hike is to a water fall and on the way there you will go through some smaller streams of water, needing to balance on rocks/pieces of wood- unless you don't mind getting wet! I did slip and get my entire food submerged so make sure you bring extra shoes/socks in case for the time after the hike! The hike overall was pretty doable, maybe an hour to get through, and not too crowded, especially for a Saturday morning. We made it to the waterfall which was beautiful!

This hike is ABSOLUTELY beautiful. The trail is very narrow, a few times you'd have to stop to let someone pass or wait for people to stop to let you pass. I went just after the rains, so the creeks and waterfall were bountiful but crossing was difficult as there were lines to cross using trees/rocks. At some point I just waded across. It gets muddy it gets slippery. Be careful. Parking sucks. There's a lot for like 4 cars at the bottom so odds are you have to park on PCH just pay mind to the parking signs. They looove to ticket there. I was able to complete this 4 mile hike (round trip) in about 1 hour and 20 minutes. I am not an avid hiker nor am I terribly in shape, but it was manageable. Have fun! Bring water! Bring snacks :)

I am not an outdoorsy type of person at all and I usually don't like hiking because of the wildlife and bugs however I recently decided to go to Escondido Trails to see the waterfall in person and it was a beautiful experience. The trail is pretty easy to hike with only a few steep hills and my favorite parts were crossing the creeks, testing my balance and of course reaching the waterfall at the end of the trail. Only took about an hour or so to reach.

    Raechel I.

Don't let the walk from the parking lot fool you, the hike is a hike. We did almost 6 miles round trip. Bring snacks and water. So many beautiful view of both the ocean and mountains. My partner carried our 2 year old most of the way there. Dog friendly trail. We will definitely be doing this trail again.

    Lower Falls

Hiked Escondido Falls this morning 2/10/23. 1.7 miles to the Falls and all of that is rated easy. Took us 90 mins total for the entire hike. Getting up to the 2nd falls is more challenging though, not because of the steepness, but due to the gravel and dirt. It's easy to slip and requires getting a bit dirty on the way down especially. We saw a man slip really bad on the way down so I can confirm getting scratched up is easily possible. There are ropes for part of the climb but not for the whole way unfortunately. If you want to give it a try it's to the right of the lower falls, past the crushed chain link fence. The parking lot for the trail is right off of the PCH just west of Geoffrey's Restaurant. For the first .75 mile you'll be walking on asphalt past some beautiful homes and then you will reach the trailhead. Once you get down to the flat part of the trail there is a lot of shade coverings however it's not as diverse flora wise compared to some other trails around LA. I give it a 4/5 for a few reasons. It's very easy and you don't go through a lot of nature, just three small stream crossings and you're at the falls before you know it. There is also horse poop everywhere so it's easy to step in that if you're not paying attention. Finally this is a very busy trail. You will see many people on the way in and on the way out. The parking lot often fills up, also it's $12 to park. It's not the sort of trail to go to be alone or in your thoughts due to the crowds.

Amazing place This is the trip to Escondido falls. One of the shortest trails you will ever experience but the waterfall is amazing. Great scenery and a lot of people. What to expect: A lot of people Rarely any parking. $12 parking - only 9 spaces to park Free parking next to the street. (Don't park next to the tow sign, park a few feet away from it. About 1.6 mile trail to the waterfall

My favorite tree is on the way up!

When I moved to Malibu 32 years ago, this is the very first trail I hiked on! I am celebrating that day because this is a magical trail that leads back to a sometimes flowing waterfall. I have not seen it flowing like this honestly ever! We had an abundance of rain this year. Please be respectful and pick up garbage if you see it. This is a sacred place, it is Nature. We are Nature. Thank you, enjoy the trail as often as you are able, Nature is the great equalizer.

    Justine R.

I love the Escondido Falls hike!! It's typically more shaded, takes you through beautiful foliage and ends with a waterfall. It's out and back to the waterfall - I've been before where there's just a trickle but lately the water has been abundant due to all the rain. It's definitely a busier trail so I'd recommend an earlier morning hike here to beat the traffic.

Ask the Community - Escondido Canyon Park

    Is this hike currently open?

I had a friend go on Saturday (9/19/20) and it was open but the second waterfall was dried out.

    What time does it open?

I believe sunrise, assuming maybe 7am. But you can park on the street and I'm sure you can walk up to the trail at anytime.

Is the trail stroller or baby carrier friendly?

I would say it is baby carrier friendly and somewhat stroller friendly for the first waterfall only. I would recommend the baby carrier over the stroller. As soon as you're passed the paved trail in the beginning there is a small downhill to begin… Read more

    Is this hike kid friendly?

Yes, I seen lots of kids. I would say 6 and up

Is there anywhere to cliff jump into water?

    Not that I'm aware of.

Went up the little route on the right for the upper (2nd) waterfall and it was gated, is it closed?

Where is the 2nd water fall?

    Check my review!

    Is this trail still open?

    Yes

Can you swim in the pools of water or is it too shallow? Thanks!!

    It's too shallow

    Are the falls dried up?

I was there about two weeks ago. The first waterfall had much less water, but the second one that's further up had plenty of water.

Are dogs allowed on this hike?

Yes dogs are allowed but during the rainy season it will be a bit of a tough hike for large dogs and impossible for small dogs because you cross the river multiple times and the trail can get super muddy. As per the usual hike etiquette they are… Read more

Does anyone know if there is a lot of water right now in the falls?

There's some water in the water falls but not really. Don't expect to swim in there.

When are the least amount of people there? When's a good time to go when it's more vacant/peaceful?

It's always good to go during the week! Usually people are at work or school I went on a Tuesday morning my day off and there was people but only at the first tier! I'm sure during summer break it will be crowded

How many miles is the hike?

Feels like 3 miles, it should only be 2 hours total to there back.

It's a loop hike, and we preferred doing it clockwise. This way, the climb felt more gradual at first and gave us those rewarding canyon-top views with the canyon on one side and the ocean on the other. Be prepared--the ascent can be quite steep in parts, but the payoff at the top makes it all worth it. Facilities are only available at the trailhead, so plan accordingly. The creek, little waterfalls (especially after rain), and the ruins tucked into the canyon make the walk interesting without feeling crowded or overwhelming. We've all heard of PTSD…read more... You know, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. But have you heard of PDSB?? (I'll break this one down in a bit) Well, if you've read any of my other reviews of the picturesque beaches in Southern California, your PTSD of "here we go again, another review about white sandy beaches, moderate temp. waters and picture perfect sunsets" by Lance L. just might kick in. But bear with me, because this review, you're definitely not gonna want to skip. So what is PDSB you ask? Well Point Dume State Beach of course! Yes, one of Malibu's finest & for good reason too! Sure, when everyone thinks about beaches in Malibu... For those with families, It's usually Zuma Beach, but that's where EVERYBODY goes and because of this, it's ALWAYS packed! And of course, there's where all the surfers go.... Surfrider Beach, hence the name! But Surfrider is for hangin' 10 and you just might get a big stare down by the locals. But Point Dume State Beach or PDSB as I know you will now refer to it is about to be your new favorite. Here's why: A pay lot which sounds like it sucks to have to pay just to go to the beach, but the minimal cost ($6-$15 depending the season) is worth it. The lot is literally parallel to the beach and once you park, you are right on the sand! In addition, Point Dume State Beach, although smaller than Zuma is pretty decent because it's not as well known about so you will definitely find a place to plant that umbrella and set up your beach towel to watch the kids play, throw a football around or work on your tan lines. As far as Safety, Not only is lifeguard towers right on the sand, but a lifeguard headquarters office is also onsite, so if something goes south, help is very nearby. Point Dume State Beach does have fairly maintained, public restrooms that's are serviced regularly by the beaches and harbors maintenance team as well as a few porta-potties onsite for use. The beaches themselves are clean and do not have a lot of trash, debris or tar like some of the beaches that I've been to up North on the Ventura County Side (Oxnard & Ventura beaches). And the best part, some of the best sunsets you can catch on this part of the coastline. Besides the actual beach, you can actually hike from the beach side itself up the Point Dume hiking trail to get an even better view or jump off the cliff if you dare. But.... Please, Please, Just make sure you are a solid swimmer if you are a real swimmer thrill seeker as the water near the cliff is rocky and the currents are very unforgiving. There are always calls for service where Lifeguards, Firefighters and the Sheriff's department are on scene performing rescues, but unfortunately, sometimes are unsuccessful and people have tragically drowned. So maybe leave the Olympic style diving into the Big Blue to the pros. And now that you probably have actual PTSD from me telling you how you could actually die if you aren't careful.... Maybe just shake it off and get some PDSB instead and enjoy the Best of Malibu from the safety of your seat right on the sand! "Life's a Beach, Enjoy it!"

We parked on the PCH passed Malibu Seafood (watch where you park, cops are serious in this area, they were hunting to give tickets to people when we went!). We walked into Malibu Seafood parking lot, there is a sign and you start a hike. You can check various trails, we stayed on the main path, which is tight and there is vegetation on both sides, so long pants are important as is sunscreen and water due to lack of shade. There weren't too many people, the views are incredible, the Pacific ocean shines in the horizon and Malibu coastline is gorgeous. We saw a few hawks flying above. We stayed on the trail, the chimney comes up fast, then kept going for a while and we did take a left at the fork and the views got better and better! Whatever trail you take, you won't get lost since this is a loop. Around 2 miles hike, not easy, but not strenuous, I'd call it moderate, good exercise, but not too hard. In regards to service it was horrible as the ranger Graceyn was extremely rude even laughing at our predicament and saying we were lying about our reservation, it was hard to even begin talking to her as before anything she didn't want to even talk to us and had to be convinced by another ranger to talk to us which was very weird behavior? I've never experienced such ungrounded rudeness before to the point where the other ranger seemed almost apologetic in the stead of Graceyn's behavior.
