What an absolutely beautiful place to visit. We had fun hiking the trails & soaking in the beauty of the ocean and mountains all at once. There were plenty of mountain bikers out and campers too.

Absolutely love Point Mugu! Such a beautiful spot on the PCH. The beach is great and the rock is a wonderful vista point. My favorite is hiking up the Chumash Trail. Very rigorous hike but not too long. The views are amazing!

Camped right on the beach. Easy access, plenty of parking and camp area. Great place to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Plenty of good hiking around the corner at the other site from Thornhill

A stroll to this quiet and tranquil trailhead is mesmerizing and satisfying. It could be a meditating stroll or self reflecting walk, alone in the wood, marine layer filled arena, and/or desert like eco system depending on how far you want to go. I recommend to go at least 1 mile to feel the all the eco system. It also depends on the season, burning hot, artic cold or monsoon wet. On good days, one can see the Channel Islands rising above silky emerald blue water. Hear and feel the vibration from helicopters and fighter jets engine from Point Mugu Naval Station. Occasionally, you may encounter horse back riders, trail bike riders, chayotes, snakes, rarely birds, visiting campers, and fire crews. Btw, no phone service on most trail Have fun trailing...

What a lovely lovely place! I am so lucky to live so close to this Park. State Parks can be pricey, but to hike here it's only a few dollars to park. We went to the La Jolla parking lot - there is a little computer parking machine there - and went on a 5 mile hike. It's out and back, so you can make it as long as you like. Regardless of the lot you choose or the trail, you will see amazing views of the ocean, and, if you go in Spring like we did, amazing flowers and bumble bees. This was a great place to see the blooms after the big CA rainy season.

Great place to come and hike. My son and I love hiking here. Great place come and hike if your ever in the area. Great views and scene. It's like a 3 hour hike. An hour and a half to get to the top we're the flag is at and an hour in a half to get to the bottom. They have to two bathrooms located in the parking lot too. If your ever in the area check out the Chumash Trail at the Point Mugu State Park.

I am revising the beaches at Point Mugu. Beautiful beaches, clean'ish facilities. It's hard to recommend and review public spaces. This is why, I am constantly disappointed in the general public and their inability or refusal to be considerate of others and clean up their messes and garbage. So...the beaches were a mess with humanities garbage. The army of state park attendants really does a great job of cleaning up the beach facilities each morning. It's too bad they have to work so hard EVERY MORNING cleaning. Come on everyone, these beaches deserve 5 stars. Remember you mother's wise words, "CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF!"

    Great camping spot!!

Great camping right on the beach!! Camp fires allowed in fire ring if fire risk warnings are low. Visited 3 times and have been able to have fire for cooking. If fire risk is high, gas cooking or charcoal is only permitted.

This is my go to biking area. It's relatively close to where I live and has some very good trails. Sycamore Canyon Access is basically the starting point from either HWY 1 or from Newbury Park. Overlook climb will take you up the mountain about 1000ft toward Backbone which is an amazing Blue Trail or climb an additional 500ft up Guadalasca for another very good trail but very rocky compared to Backbone. The end of both of these trails lands you back on Sycamore Canyon Access. If you take a left and ride for approx 30 to 40 minutes which includes another climb, you will see Art's Trail on the right. Take Art's, to Sin Nombre before finishing off on Two Foxes. If you take a left and then a right at the T, you'll head back toward the HWY 1. This entire loop can get you roughly 2,000 ft of elevation and roughly around 20 miles. It's a very good area to level up your skills and getting comfortable on your bike before hitting up any black or double black diamond trails in Oak Park and/or Simi Valley.

Been coming here for YEARS, but it's amazing what one year indoors, cut off from the world, nature and people will do. Out and about with a mask on setting foot on this wonderful spot. Such enjoyment at its purest.

I really wish I can give it more than 5 stars bc this was one of the best state parks I've been to! Let me preface this with the fact that I also went camping here (at Sycamore Campground- which I also highly highly recommend) so I spent a whole weekend here than just a day trip. Anyways, the campground itself is super nice! The spot we got was huge (I think it's for a max of 6 ppl? But we just had 2 for the weekend), and the fee is only $45 per night. The bathrooms and showers were nearby, and they were super well maintained. They even had soap and mirrors by the sink which I loooved! There were lots of different trails, but my favorite was the scenic overlook! It keeps going for a little bit but at the end of it you get an amazing view like this. The other trails were nice too but this was probably my favorite.

My nephew was out here from Minneapolis for a visit and couldn't believe his eyes. He loved it!
    Beth S.

I can't believe how lucky I am that this literally is my backyard. People drive for many miles to enjoy these trails and drink in the amazing beauty. Without a doubt you will always see coyotes, and sometimes deer. Beautiful birds and beautiful people who truly care about nature. I love this place! Thanks to all the rangers, volunteers and conservation minded citizens who pitch in to help keep these trails beautiful. Bambi, Thumper and Wile E. all give their most sincere thanks.

    Azelle B.

One of my favorite trails! Easy 5 mi(sh) roundtrip hike with breathtaking views of the ocean from one side and mountains the other. Parking is relatively easy as there is a designated spot inside but make sure to come in early as it can get packed at around 10am. Trail can get confusing towards the very end as there are 2 options: a very steep quick incline or an easy roundabout, if you can choose the steep incline for a better view.

Point Mugu State Park Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Point Mugu State Park

Anyone see the monarch butterfly migration here?

Only when wind will pick them up from PCH

    Are dogs allowed?

No domestic animals except the horses are allowed

Does anyone know if it is open?

I camped here over valentines weekend and it was open!

I want to take my daughter out for a little bit, will I be able to use the stroller here?

The land space is extremely large and flat, so yes you would. However, there is a portion that's steep and not safe for a stroller.

Is this park open now considering COVID?

Can me and my family go and fish here without a permit?

I recommend a strollers with big wheelers & shock absorbers for the baby to be comfortable. Again, those strollers may be too large to maneuver around tight corners.

What is the shortest trail here?

It's up to you when and where to turn around. It's about 2.5 miles & 1000+ sea level to the fire lane.

In the past though pick your campsite when you arrive? Has that changed?

    I'm not sure sorry

    Is there a superbloom?

Not yet (feb 2023). After a few more storms, maybe🙄

We are doing PCH tent camping this year after the 4th, 2 nights at 3 beaches, hopefully. So my question is, do we absolutely HAVE TO make reservations to stay on this beach?

I would strongly suggest you do, since there were not tons of spaces and you may not get a spot.

I have a camping trip planned next month. How close is the nearest grocery store? Are there any nearby restaurants or snack shops?

The beach is about 10 miles north(maybe a little longer than that)of Malibu on PCH Of course there's restaurants grocery stores etc in Malibu. 😊

    Are dogs allowed?

Dogs on a leash are allowed in the Park's day use areas, campgrounds and beaches. Dogs are not allowed on the backcountry trails or dirt roads.

Do I need to reserve a campsite to be able to have a bonfire just for the day?

Yes you do. You have to bool in advance it get booked out prerty quick and months in advance.

Are they really strict on maximum occupancy per campsite?

    Yes

Is there easy to find parking?

    No problem finding parking

It's a loop hike, and we preferred doing it clockwise. This way, the climb felt more gradual at first and gave us those rewarding canyon-top views with the canyon on one side and the ocean on the other. There's also a little waterfall and a lively stream running through the trail (we went in July, and the water was still flowing nicely). Be prepared--the ascent can be quite steep in parts, but the payoff at the top makes it all worth it. Facilities are only available at the trailhead, so plan accordingly. Dogs are allowed, but they should be kept on a leash. Parking is a bit tricky. The lot only seems to hold about 30 ish cars. I would say on the moderate / hard side.

The trail is…read moreeasy and well-maintained, but still feels like you've stepped away from the city and into something calmer. The creek, little waterfalls (especially after rain), and the ruins tucked into the canyon make the walk interesting without feeling crowded or overwhelming. What I love most is how peaceful it feels. You get ocean air drifting in, birds everywhere, and just enough shade to make it comfortable even on warmer days. It's perfect for a relaxed hike, a slow morning walk, or taking out-of-town friends who want something scenic without a hardcore climb. Parking can fill up, especially on weekends, but once you're on the trail it's totally worth it. If you're looking for a mellow hike with history, nature, and classic Malibu vibes, Solstice Canyon is a solid choice.

We've all heard of PTSD…read more... You know, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. But have you heard of PDSB?? (I'll break this one down in a bit) Well, if you've read any of my other reviews of the picturesque beaches in Southern California, your PTSD of "here we go again, another review about white sandy beaches, moderate temp. waters and picture perfect sunsets" by Lance L. just might kick in. But bear with me, because this review, you're definitely not gonna want to skip. So what is PDSB you ask? Well Point Dume State Beach of course! Yes, one of Malibu's finest & for good reason too! Sure, when everyone thinks about beaches in Malibu... For those with families, It's usually Zuma Beach, but that's where EVERYBODY goes and because of this, it's ALWAYS packed! And of course, there's where all the surfers go.... Surfrider Beach, hence the name! But Surfrider is for hangin' 10 and you just might get a big stare down by the locals. But Point Dume State Beach or PDSB as I know you will now refer to it is about to be your new favorite. Here's why: A pay lot which sounds like it sucks to have to pay just to go to the beach, but the minimal cost ($6-$15 depending the season) is worth it. The lot is literally parallel to the beach and once you park, you are right on the sand! In addition, Point Dume State Beach, although smaller than Zuma is pretty decent because it's not as well known about so you will definitely find a place to plant that umbrella and set up your beach towel to watch the kids play, throw a football around or work on your tan lines. As far as Safety, Not only is lifeguard towers right on the sand, but a lifeguard headquarters office is also onsite, so if something goes south, help is very nearby. Point Dume State Beach does have fairly maintained, public restrooms that's are serviced regularly by the beaches and harbors maintenance team as well as a few porta-potties onsite for use. The beaches themselves are clean and do not have a lot of trash, debris or tar like some of the beaches that I've been to up North on the Ventura County Side (Oxnard & Ventura beaches). And the best part, some of the best sunsets you can catch on this part of the coastline. Besides the actual beach, you can actually hike from the beach side itself up the Point Dume hiking trail to get an even better view or jump off the cliff if you dare. But.... Please, Please, Just make sure you are a solid swimmer if you are a real swimmer thrill seeker as the water near the cliff is rocky and the currents are very unforgiving. There are always calls for service where Lifeguards, Firefighters and the Sheriff's department are on scene performing rescues, but unfortunately, sometimes are unsuccessful and people have tragically drowned. So maybe leave the Olympic style diving into the Big Blue to the pros. And now that you probably have actual PTSD from me telling you how you could actually die if you aren't careful.... Maybe just shake it off and get some PDSB instead and enjoy the Best of Malibu from the safety of your seat right on the sand! "Life's a Beach, Enjoy it!"

We parked on the PCH passed Malibu Seafood (watch where you park, cops are serious in this area, they were hunting to give tickets to people when we went!). We walked into Malibu Seafood parking lot, there is a sign and you start a hike. You can check various trails, we stayed on the main path, which is tight and there is vegetation on both sides, so long pants are important as is sunscreen and water due to lack of shade. There weren't too many people, the views are incredible, the Pacific ocean shines in the horizon and Malibu coastline is gorgeous. We saw a few hawks flying above.
