I can only speak to the last few years... and my pup has not had issues with the gravel but that earlier review is heartbreaking and I'm sorry they experienced it. I suspect they replaced the ground material in the park. I discovered this park before DogPPL but now that we can't get to DogPPL because of the road closures. we are back at free Trancas! I love it because it's huge. However, there is no delineation between large and small, it's one giant park. It's way out by Trancas and just a quick drive up into the canyon from the Vintage Grocer, another store I love! So you can pop in at the vintage grocer and grab some snacks for yourself or after you get finished with the dog park you can swing down there and stop at one of the restaurants. I know Kristy's is located in the center now as well as the brewery. The location of the dog park is impressively scenic as far as dog parks go. There are canyon and ocean views. The restrooms are generally pretty clean; they've never been filthy even though they are ranger maintained public facilities. There's a really cute little kids playground that has the squishy ground, which feels so nice to walk on and then of course the gigantic soccer field. There's plenty of free parking and it's never been crowded. I have had some negative dog encounters here because it is so quiet people will sometimes bring less than fully socialized dogs here. So you have to be cautious and monitor your dog if they're not in the park alone. But that's any dog park. And as a dog owner, we owe it to our pups to monitor them. There's no cell phone service here at least for me with AT&T, but I do love the ocean views. It's really a great dog park. The picnic table is in the shade always helps us beat the heat. And although my dog doesn't jump over the little rails or going to the red tunnel, he loves that there's chaparral on the hill that he can go pee and sniff, and he loves all the trees in the park and the positioned rocks within the park. Pretty much everything in Malibu is better... So I'm not surprised that this hidden gem of a park hits every single one of my expectations. It was a beautiful weekday in October and we nearly had the park all to ourselves. To be honest, Trancas Canyon Park is tucked away off of PCH and frequented only by the locals and those who are in the know. So after you read this... when Will Smith & Tommy Lee Jones stop by in their black suits, and the song "We are the Men in Black" starts playing in the background... Don not be alarmed, just smile for their little stick camera. ;) The park is nestled against the hill, secluded from view, and has the perfect amount of sunshine & shade. The playground is designed for 5-12 year olds and is a little "Malibu City" compromising of Hotel, a General Store, a Post Office, and a Sheriff Station. My kids had a blast, and even though I'm way past 12, it didn't stop me from chasing them, running up and down the playground all while playing a fun game of tag. Adjacent to the playground sits a wide open field of lush grass to run, kick or throw a ball or set up a blanket and have a nice little picnic. An area with covered & uncovered picnic benches is also available and would make a great place to host a small birthday party for kids or just a nice spot to eat lunch, read a book, and just be one with nature. Restrooms are clean, the park is absolutely pristine and the views of the Pacific are nothing short of Magical. Attached to the park is a small gated dog park where you can bring your 4-legged friends to mingle and rub paws with Malibu's Elite pups. My family had a blast and we will definitely be coming back. Beautiful location but not suitable surface for dog play. If you insist on going to this park please use foot coverings. Also there were a ton of bees around so make sure you have some Benadryl in the car just in case. Really wanted to like this park but the rocks and the fact that there is no separation for small and large dogs is a hard pass for us. read more

Hard to find but a diamond in the rough. Well, it is Malibu so maybe not so rough. This area is beautiful. Surrounded by mountains and the sea. Wild flowers blooming for as far as the eye can see. It was not busy on a Sun afternoon as everyone was seemingly down at the beach. The dogs and people that we did encounter were very nice. The locals are so lucky to have this park. A lot of money goes into it for sure. It is very well maintained. The soccer park below is very green but not for dogs. You have to go up many stairs to get to the dog park area. 1 area. No separation for small and large dogs. The washrooms below were locked on this day but they was an outhouse. Ew. Stunk. But, when ya gotta go... There was water for the dogs and poop bags available. The ground was all sharp pebbles. Maybe not a good place to run your dog or to play ball. Mine is a ball nut and can run like the wind so I was too worried about her paw pads getting torn up to play much. A good, worthy stop though and would return for sure as there are not many places around to let dogs loose otherwise. read more

This review is for the playground. We ended up here for a 3 year olds birthday party and it is a gem. For a Saturday it was fairly empty and there is plenty to do and lots of space for kids to run around and explore. It overlooks the houses in Malibu and the ocean, and has ample parking and green space. The restrooms were also in good condition and I love me a themed park! 10 out of 10. read more

Worst dog park ever. A few years ago, I had a $400 vet bill after my mini Aussie ran all over the gravel. The rocks tore open the pads on her feet like blisters. It was horrible! (And we hike and walk on gravel, concrete, etc often - her feet are not sensitive.) Even if there are fun dogs to play with, my dog won't do more than walk in this park anymore. Even then, she does so gingerly! The dog park itself is nothing but an enclosed pit of tiny pebbles and rocks. The gravel is harsh and sharp; not smooth like sand. There is no large/small dog side. The landscape is dotted with a few baby trees and large rocks. And there's a dirt hill in the back that some dogs enjoy running up and down. But beware - there's a large, open drainage pipe up there too. We don't come here often. While I appreciate that they were trying to be eco friendly, I can't wait until the City of Malibu realizes what a mistake they made with that gravel. It's hurting our dogs!!! read more

Nice dog park (and playground if you have those types of little ones) that's just a short detour off and above the PCH. Great views, plenty of shade and water for the doggos. So... I would have given this 5 stars because my dogs both loved it. One in particular was having the time of his life. But after we left, I noticed he seemed a little lethargic. I checked him out I noticed his poor paw pads were TOTALLY ripped up. $300 vet bill later and he is stuck in bandages and cone for a week! I am notifying the city. My other dog's paws are fine, but he did not run around at all. So I would say if your dog is chill and just wants to mosey around than this place is beautiful but if you have an active dog - be careful! read more

Quiet little park with a nice view. My wife and I bring out little guy to play in the dog park and we've never had any issues. Kinda lonely sometimes. Some people have had problems with the gravel in the park so just check your dogs paws every once in a while. read more

Beautiful playground tucked into the Trancas Canyon backdrop. The playground has lots for ages 2-10. There is a large field to kick the ball around. One of the playground sets has a bell your little ones can ring. And there is plenty of shade by the picnic tables. read more

I'm no Dog Park Expert, but this place has everything a dog's companion could want: lots of open off-leash space, a doggie water fountain and convenient poop bags. And yes, as one reviewer noted the place is practically empty most of the time so it's not a good place if you're looking for a social scene for your dog. On the flip side, there's nothing wrong with having a huge space for your dog to run and go crazy. It's small, with wood chips and attached to a people park.The best thing about it is that its clean. I've met some really nice dog owners here and also some super weird stressed out type A freaks that Malibu can sometimes attract. I use to take my German Shepherd to this park every Sunday morning for obedience class, agility training, and bite work training. However through the grape vine I've heard that some people of Malibu have complained to the city so the classes have been cancelled. My dog really benefited from this class. On a trip to Malibu for the night, my furry friend and I stopped at this park. Clean and beautiful setting. My pup and I much enjoyed this park. Not huge but my hound could still pick up some speed. The park is nice, clear of brush so snakes are easy to see, there is a dog water fountain, a ball basket, and lots of space for pups to run. However, be warned. The ground is a mix of gravel and sand. If your dog likes to run fast his paws will be torn up. My dog tore 4 paw pads form running around here. Why they decided to put gravel rocks down makes no sense to me, they could have just stick with dirt. read more

This is really a triumph of a park! They have phenomenal play equipment for kids to play on, no sand (which I love!), tables to eat (even a toddler table and bench), clean bathrooms and tons of grass area (and I mean TONS!!) for a picnic or for kids to play. Although this park is not fully gated, I feel very safe here as the kids do not have access to the street here. The park is downhill on a mountain...its not like kids can just cross the street. Also, the play area is not right next to the parking area. There is also a beautiful view of the mountains (as you are on a mountain) and you can see the ocean from certain parts. A park with a wonderful vibe and it feels great being in a nature. This is by far my favorite park! read more
