Great Front Desk Service From a Wonderful Lady Named Hannah. She was so sweet and kind to everyone in the lobby.

I should begin this by stating this dental group engages in shady business practices and will physically threaten you if you call them out on it. I'm not just saying this because I am upset with them, but as you will see, I am attaching pictures of documents to this review that clearly show that this is true. To preface, I see a lot of old people in this office when I'm there and its in a wealthy area, and I believe that they are exploiting this to make an extra buck here and there. The first indicator that these guys didn't really play by rules was when I got my first insurance EOB back. Before settling on La Costa Dental Group, I had called several places and asked if they were in network or not. The very friendly secretary assured me that they were and she also confirmed the same on my first appointment. Lo and behold, they aren't in network and the first $1200 procedure they sold me ended up costing me $200 because the out of network coverage was only $1,000. I let this slide because everyone is just so friendly - big mistake. My only procedure was a root canal and crown. In total, this would end up costing me more than $4,500.00. Which is exorbitant for a crown, even compared to other dentists in Encinitas. This is because the dentist I had (whom will remain nameless) said he was going to go in and "prep" my tooth for the root canal guy. He said because of the damage, he was going to need to perform a pulpectomy. He actually told me the endodontist usually performs but he was going to do it. The bill for a pulpectomy? $1200 something dollars. Then I get my root canal for $1400 and talk to endodontist. I ask, "How much did I save by having the dentist do pulpectomy?" He answers "Nothing. It has to be done on the way to the root so its part of the root canal procedure". So I basically had a procedure that cost $1200 just for the dentist to make a buck. They lied about insurance to get me in there, and even DOUBLE billed my insurance (we can see it) for the same procedure. Then I go to get my crown and of course, nothing left on insurance. Needless to say my wife is furious. I paid half the crown prior to pickup but instead of picking it and having it put in, we just refuse to pay the remainder and refuse to pickup the crown. That's when I get this letter. Its from La Costa Dental Group, from a person with no last name using the alias "Gretchen" and the letter ends with "Please pay your balance now so that we can avoid any further action--which will be unpleasant for both of us." Now I''m not sure if they mean legal, or are actually make a physical threat, but I have a wife and newborn at home and we are worried they may try something "unpleasent" to encourage me to pick up the crown and pay the remaining funds. If you look at their reviews, about half of them are fake, or paid for. They are accounts with just a few random reviews and no profile picture. They are just fake accounts used by whatever social media / ad agency they use. I bet the legitimate 5 star reviews are employees r friends. You'll see the sporadic review talking about outrageous bills and lying about insurance coverage drizzled in and these are real reviews. There are so many dentists in the area, there is literally no reason for anyone to use La Costa Dental over the others. read more

La Costa Dental is great! I had been a patient for many years until I changed jobs and no longer had dental insurance. I tried a low budget plan and it was terrible. When i went to get my teeth cleaned the low budget dental office took 15 minutes to clean my teeth...not the 30 to 45 minutes La Costa Dental has always taken...and the new place then tried to tell me that my gums were not good and that if I ever wanted to have them clean my teeth again, I would need to pay for the $250 deep cleaning they recommended. Luckily, I saw my good friend whose father (Frank Schroeder) cleaned and took care of my teeth for years until I moved from Illinois and who was also in the dental business and she said RUN DON'T WALK away from this place. I have been a patient at La Costa Dental Group for over 20 years. I have also taken all six of my children there. I have nothing to say but compliments!!! I first started seeing Dr. Montague when I was a train wreck about seeing dentists. I didn't trust anyone and I believed that every dentist would hurt me and take my money. Not the case here! 20+ years later and I'm still a patient. They have not hurt me or scammed me. I am having my first crown done this month and it's preventative. They have been watching my tooth for awhile and gave me plenty of notice. If they wanted only my money they would have told me I needed it years ago. Everyone there is gentle and trustworthy. I was a complete mental case about any dental procedure (including cleaning) before finding La Costa Dental. My heart beat would be through the roof and I would pinch myself and just generally be a nervous wreck. Prior to going to La Costa Dental, if I needed a nerve related procedure, like a root canal, I took Halcion(?) and other sedatives and heavy painkillers. Such was my mental anguish that I even considered full anesthesia. At La Costa everything changed. They are very careful not to over diagnose and are super patient at explaining every step of the way both before the procedure and, at the patient's discretion, during the procedure. They also really take their time and are focused on making sure the local anesthetic is activated properly, before beginning. I have since had a cavity filled, two root canals and several cleanings at La Costa Dental and I can happily say I am no longer afraid of the dentist : ) The only pain I felt was a little pinch for the syringe and after which I was completely comfortable and calm during both procedures. I just cannot say enough about how happy I am to have found this wonderful practice. A+ from scheduling and front office and more importantly the doctors are both excellent at what they do and laid back considerate people. read more

I have been a patient of several of the Dentists of La Costa dental group for over 25 years. I would classify myself as a higher than average anxiety ridden patient, probably in the highest class of anxiety maybe the highest part of the highest class. The whole staff at La Costa dental never once made me feel childish or ashamed. They even held my hand because it made me feel more safe. I am a grown woman with a professional job. But here, at the dentist, I feel like a small child. And everyone there treats me with so much respect and dignity anyway. We have been going to La Costa Dental since 2005 when we first moved to Carlsbad. We were provided a referral to this practice from our family doctor. We were very happy to find dental group of caring doctors doing the right thing for their patients. A few years ago one of the original doctors retired and sold his practice. Since then, things have not gone as well. With the new regime came a total different feel. Simply speaking, the new doctor appeared to be more interested in sales than care. My first interaction with the new doc, I felt like the used car salesman from down the street walked in the wrong office that morning. All of a sudden I needed a ton of dental work that wasn't necessary just 6 months prior. I passed on his suggestions but continued seeing the fantastic group of hygienists in hopes the experience would change. Sadly, nothing changed other than the front office staff becoming surprisingly pushy and unpleasant. I requested to be reassigned to the other original partner but my request was ignored. It's been three years since all that dental work was "necessary" and I have yet to require anything but regular cleanings. Given how many other dentists are in the area, I believe there are better choices. read more

I am a new patient and I can't be happier. I chipped a tooth and after asking around for a recommendation I found my self in Dr. Anisso's chair. He was so nice and was super helpful in explaining to me what I needed to have done. On my next appointment I was seen promptly and my tooth was fixed. He was very gentle. I came to La Costa Dental several years ago after becoming fed up with my previous dentist who was constantly finding the need to fill 'cavities' and or soft spots in my and my children's teeth (including baby teeth that were due to fall out very soon). Victoria is a first class hygienist, works magic on teeth, AND has the ability to pacify a total dentist phobe like myself. Victoria has extensive knowledge, education and experience about all things teeth related. She is also exceptionally knowledgeable about sleep apnea and was able to identify it in my 5 year old and steer us towards the best treatment. NEED TO KNOW: Victoria Melzer is temporarily out on a leave of absence. She's told me a million times that if she's not available to go to Jessica. I tried Jessica last week and it was fine. So here's my story: I came to La Costa Dental Group in search of the best Orthodontist! Who did I find? Dr. Milliner! You see Dr. Milliner started my sons ortho treatment 3 1/2 years ago at another office in Carlsbad (if you want to know where - send me a message. I hear many people are trying to find her! ;). She just about completed Phase 1 while at the other office. It was now time to began Phase 2 and I had to do some googling and research to locate what office she is currently at. Was thrilled to find her at La Costa Dental Group today. And a huge bonus the 2 BEST Hygienist (also from the other office) also followed her. Score x 3 for my son and additional bonus that my husband and I could now see the Dentists here and have our favorite Hygienist as well. Glenda was awesome as the Office Manager - going out of her way to welcome us to this office and happy that we were already connected to Dr. Milliner. I have been a patient at La costa Dental for over 20 years. My last crown was done over 12 years ago so I have been lucky. I was told I needed a crown and I have been told in the past that I have a strange bite and I wear an orthodontic retainer nightly, so logically I thought it was going to be hard to get the proper fit. To my surprise the crown fit perfectly right from the start. There were no adjustments for my bite or when I put in my retainer in my mouth. It's all about service!!! And that is what La Costa Dental Group is all about. I can cite a number of cases where they have exceeded this important distinguishing element in their business, but the one that really stands out is the example of what happened to me on December 23, 2018. That evening, I was eating candy (which I shouldn't have been having) when a gold crown dislodged from a back molar. I called the office after hours and the message said they were off on Christmas Eve and Christmas, but if it was an emergency, call the emergency number and someone would get back to me. I decided that this was an emergency since we had 30 people coming over on Christmas Eve and were leaving town for the week after that. Within a short amount of time, Dr. Montague called me back and set up an appointment on Christmas Eve at 9 am. Mind you, they were closed for two days. My actual dentist is Dr. Anisso, but Dr. Montague was on call. At 9 the next morning, Dr. Montague greeted me with a "Merry Christmas" and ushered me to a treatment room. No other staff was in the office. Within 20 minutes he cleaned and re-cemented the crown and he and I were out continuing our last-minute shopping. This is exceptional service!!!! And while on kudos, I think highly about my hygienist, Alex, (yes, I have flossed) and the front office staff, including Glenda, who have always accommodated my schedule and requests. I have been going to LCDG since we moved to Carlsbad in 1995. I refer anyone who asks for a recommendation for a dentist to LCDG. I have been a patient of the La Costa Dental Group for about 15 years and wouldn't consider going anywhere else. They are friendly, professional and the office is well run. My dental hygienist Simi is always upbeat, positive, and does an amazing job. Dr. Anisso is my primary Dentist and he is also very thorough and on top of it. I never feel like I am being sold hard on unnecessary procedures or products. I have been to dental offices in past that were very aggressive and as a result made you wonder if they weren't more interested in my wallet then the health of my teeth. Yesterday I went to La Costa Dental for the first time. Let me tell you it was the best experience I have ever had. From check in until I was done with my teeth cleaning. After recently moving to the area I scheduled an appointment at La Costa Dental for a cleaning in hopes of identifying a dentist for my family's oral care. The initial appointment/cleaning went well, Dr Montague seemed to be a friendly dentist and the cleaning went smoothly. I sent my wife in the following week and though we had found our long term dental provider. About a month later, I received 2 bills for $75 for the cleanings. I was very confused by this as I have never paid for a cleaning in 20 years. I have good dental insurance in working for a medical device company. Upon calling and inquiring into what I thought was surely a mistake, I was told this was in fact accurate due to La Costa Dental being a "preferred provider" for Delta Dental. Upon further inquiry into what that was, I was not provided reasonable explanation of what services are different and make La Costa "preferred", but simply to inquire of my insurance company. I found through my insurance company that this is essentially La Costa's unwillingness to accept the rates negotiated by the dental plan and therefore provide additional charges to the patient. My insurance company agreed that my dental plan would have been known to La Costa upfront and that I should have been advised of this. I am about 7 calls into La Costa at this point and my conversations with their billing person very much make this seem like a scam that they knowingly do not make transparent to patients. Needless to say my family will be looking for another dentist. read more
