Mom was in very good health both mentally and physically prior to becoming ill in November 2023. She had been hospitalized for a respiratory infection (not COVID) and had a reaction to prednisone which caused drug induced delirium. The illness and long hospital stay prior to admittance to Allendale health resulted in my Mom losing weight from 100 lbs to 82 lbs. and she was very weakened physically. It was a very difficult time. I checked out several rehab facilities in Bergen County and was impressed with Allendale Rehabilition and Health Care. They were my first choice. Eli, the Director of Admissions is terrific. He listened and understood our situation and needs and I am so glad we chose Allendale to care for my Mom. The whole staff I found to be outstanding and caring. Special call out to Peter on the staff who brought food to my mom and was able to do the little things that made her happy and helped her manage through her recovery. Kim, the social worker there, also did an outstanding job. My Mom was at Allendale Rehabilition for about 2 weeks and she was able to really make tremendous improvement. The hardest part to be honest was convincing my Mom to go to rehab as she really wanted to go home after the hospital (but simply was not ready). I highly recommend Allendale Rehabilition and Health Center.

She lived in a large studio apartment that was great for her. She was able to keep her beloved dog, Nelson, at the assisted BWL at Mahwah. That was a great comfort. My mother was also on a lot of medications and the wellness center was able to manage her medications perfectly. The senior administrator, Mariolla. was so helpful to our family during my mom's stay at Brandywine as well as when I had to clean out the apartment due to my mother's passing. My father just spent a week in Woodcliff after a bout with pneumonia in the hospital. He has…read moredementia and doesn't speak so my ability to get info from Woodcliff staff was crucial. I would like to suggest 3 things that did not happen for me: 1.) give family a contact point when a patient arrives so we don't have to spend time each day calling anyone whose name we could glean to get info. 2.) let family know if a therapist is on vacation! The main receptionist transferred me to the speech therapist 4 days in a row (where I left messages) w/o telling me that person was on vacation. 3.) make it clear to family who is in charge of what. I was trying to find out if my father is eating. I was bounced around to multiple people on a call and finally got a nurse, who told me I need to come there to see for myself. (I live a few hours away.) Not acceptable! I am sure everyone's doing their best but it was a pretty traumatic experience all in all.

We spoke the other day with the medical director. He took a good amount of time to talk to us about my loved one's medical condition and our concerns. Looked in depth at his chart and history. Ultimately told us to invite our loved one's PCP to contact him to share thoughts to try to dig deeper into some things. In short, very personal attentive one on one care. Very knowledgeable. You don't get that everywhere if at all. The fact the head medical director made himself available to us without requiring a scheduled meeting or heads up is amazing care. Every staff member we have encountered is kind and friendly. Very personable and outgoing. You don't get the bare minimum. You can tell they care. They joke. They express concern. They listen and interact. And we have seen this with other patients in other rooms when no third parties are around. So it isn't just best behavior when family is present. It is the way of life here. So I continue to be so pleased with this facility.

There are friendly faces everywhere. They are so very attentive to the patients. It is remarkably clean. The food is fresh and flavorful and varied. After receiving and paying a statement labeled "final invoice," my father continued to receive invoices for additional charges after his passing. Prior to paying the final invoice, there were repeated errors and a concerning lack of organization in the billing process. At the same time, the facility is still holding more than $3,000 of my father's funds in CASH months later. Families deserve transparent communication and accurate billing -- especially in long-term care settings where trust is essential.

Instead, what she received at Northern Metropolitan was neglect, filth, and a level of indifference that still makes me sick to think about. The facility was consistently dirty -- foul odors, unclean floors, soiled linens, and residents left sitting in conditions no human being should endure. Basic hygiene was clearly not a priority. Staff seemed either overwhelmed, poorly trained, or completely disengaged. For a vulnerable dementia patient, routine and supervision are critical. Instead, there was chaos and carelessness. Communication with family was poor to nonexistent. Concerns were brushed off. Issues were minimized. Accountability was nowhere to be found. This was not just disappointing -- it was traumatic. Watching someone you love deteriorate is painful enough. Watching it happen in a place that is supposed to provide professional care, while witnessing obvious neglect, is something I wouldn't wish on anyone. I would strongly caution any family considering this facility. Their website is FAR from how it actually operates. What happens behind closed doors tells a very different story. Our loved ones deserve safety, cleanliness, dignity, and compassion. We did not find any of that here.
