I've been going to Essex Green Sunoco for many years and am always greeted by friendly, upbeat attendants when I fill up. The mechanics have been my heroes many times. They will make a quick diagnosis and can usually take care of small jobs while you wait. They have efficiently serviced my car for flat tires. leaking tires, oil changes, loose auto body parts and state inspections for a fair and reasonable price. Needless to say I was distressed so I called the service station and the gentleman who answered the call late in the afternoon on a Friday says "come on in" ! This was the worst place I ever been to, not by choice, hit debris on highway cough a flat. These guys couldn't fit the flat, while putting on my spare almost stripped my stud when asked to not do it the way he was doing, they started to flip out as they have 20 years experience and they know what they doin. Pretty sure this is the first time I've ever reviewed a gas station, but my most recent experience here compels me. The typical service station attendant either greets you with a grunt (if at all) or makes you feel like you've just inconvenienced him by forcing him to put his phone down (heaven forbid!) for a minute in order to open the fuel tank and punch the right buttons on the pump. Not here. There's a cat who works at this Sunoco. He's got long gray hair and Navy-style tattoos on his arms. I'm guessing from the other reviews that his name is Joe. This guy is the Bruce Springsteen/James Brown of gas station attendants. In an era of decreasing professionalization, he BRINGS IT - 100 percent of the time. I pulled in this morning and he greeted me with an ebullient, "Hey, brother! How ya doin'? What can I get for ya?" I said, "Can I get it filled regular, please?", and he responded with a, "No problem!" Then he took my card, went over to the pump, and launched into a very convincing cover of The Fortunes' "Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again" - a song that I always turn off when I hear it on the radio but that somehow sounded fresh and groovy coming from his pipes. This is a man who truly enjoys his work and thrives on brightening up his customers' days. As soon as I was filled up, he closed the cap, printed out my receipt, brought it over to me, and with a big smile said, "You have yourself a great day now." This is how every professional - whether at the bank, the post office, the electrician, etc. - should treat his or her customers. If you're anywhere in the West Orange/Montclair/Livingston area and you need gas, do yourself a favor and drive the extra distance to fill up here. read more

I went here today to do a routine oil change and had the best experience ever. If you have ever read any of my other reviews you know I am not easy to give a 5 star rating. Generally from this Sunoco, you get a mom and pop vibe meets cheers, at a GAS STATION! The attendant is very nice and ushered me to the coffee machine ( and made it for me!) The guy who did my oil change is a Dallas Fan ( boo!) but nice. The owner and I had great chat as well. This experience for me was just genuine neighborliness which, these days with our current social climate is in short supply. Definitely GO HERE! My tire was going flat again on wed so I went back thinking the patch wasn't good. I had actually picked up another screw. They had me patched and on my way in a mater of minutes. I thought I was going to a honest repair shop when I read the reviews here. Apparently NOT! I think if you're going to do basic service like oil change, flat tire patching, etc. you'll be fine. My daughter's 2000 Camry broke down and the tow truck guy recommended Sunoco West Orange which was close by to her. The problem was a bad alternator and needed to be replaced. I live over an hour away and after reading the review, I told my daughter ok. I also told her to get an estimate from them and added it should not cost more than $250. After-market alternator cost about $115-$150. Labor on a 2000 Camry should take about half hour to an hour - est. $70-$100. Not only did they not call her with the estimate, they also replaced the battery wtihout telling her. They said the battery was also bad. I had replaced the battery less than 2 years ago with a geniune Toyota battery and should still be under warranty for either 5 or 7 years. Bottomline total cost $572+ for an 17 year old car! I asked my daughter to let me talk to the manager and a mechanic talked to me instead. All he can tell me was what was hand written on the bill (which is a generic type of receipt with the business name!). No details! Basically, "Supply and install alt. assy. & labor $350. Supply and install new A/C Delco battery $185." He couldn't even tell me what type of alternator was installed! and said I will have to talk with the manager who has gone for the day already??? You decide if you trust this repair shop. Most repair shops are friendly when they want your business so they can over charge you. Having said that, I have yet to find a good mechanic that is honest. read more

Do yourself a favor and don't patronize this business. I took my wife's car over Saturday morning for a flat repair. Not only was my card charged twice for two flats (for a total of $82.50) the clowns in the shop over-torqued the lug nuts, stripping one in the process. It took over $300 in labor and parts at another shop (plus a flatbed tow to get there) to rectify the damage. When confronted about the damage, Joe (long beard, never stops talking, apparently even to do a proper job) told me "I know what you're going to say. the nut was already stripped. I just put it back on, air-gun tight." So, while I was sitting there, for 35 minutes, you couldn't bring the supposedly previously stripped nut to my attention, so I could have the option to purchase a new one from you? (thereby saving me future problems, with the additional benefit of adding to your already exorbitant rate?) The entire lot is a bunch of clowns and hacks, and drinks will be on me the moment I hear that this train-wreck shop goes out of business. read more
