They know what they're doing and are a really good value b/c they will not try to sell you on unnecessary services. I just picked up my car today and Jake saved me $3k+ by working his magic and sourcing a part that is generally only sold as part of a much larger & more expensive part. Brought my car in for Transmission Fluid change estimate/appointment. Was given a price of $572.00 which seemed extraordinarily high & forget to ask for a printout. Next day I asked & was emailed to me. There were NOT ANY numbers (prices) listed next to the services, several individual (two not required to perform the servicing of my car for this invoice); an obvious severe over charge and twice as much transmission fluid needed to perform this service with no prices listed next to it. There was no breakdown of the rate per hour of labor nor how many hours. The other two quotes I received were at least $200 below this. The estimate was defective and violated NJ Dept of Consumer Affairs Fraud Act; 13:45A-26c.2; Deceptive Practices - Automotive Repair by issuing a fraudulent estimate. I'm filing a complaint with Office of NJ Attorney General, and Essex County Department of Consumer Affairs seeking sanctions against Jakes. I'm appalled by this conduct, especially since I told him the name of the customer who referred me to him. read more

What does a quote from a fictional bunch of excitable guys in Roman sheets have to do with why I came to know that my doubts had no place in dealing with these men of honor, integrity and solid gold honesty? Cassius didn't drive a car and Brutus didn't either. But I drive one. You're reading this to see why this garage is the best garage I've frequented since the 1970's when I started tooling around in my Dad's Vista Cruiser paneled station wagon. First night I drive I did 135 mph past the Garden State Art Center on the Parkway where telephone poles looked like toothpicks. Had to get it out of my system. And there are times you learn it's you and not your stars or cars or mechanics that aren't particularly nice. So I'll do Willy the Shake one better. You know how when you're telling someone the truth and they're accusing you of not doing so? When that happens to me, I don't doubt my credibility but I doubt the accuser's. If they're ready to accuse me of being misleading, or worse, I sense it's them who's capable of duplicitous behavior themselves. I'm usually right. Long way around the barn to tell you my latest experience with Jake's Angel - that's the guy's name and apparently as far as my 2006 Honda Civic is concerned, his job title as pseudo guardian car-angel. Battery kept dying. Took it over. Jake's did a soup to nuts of issues per my request including of course demystifying the battery's reason for dying. Repeatedly. Turns out the battery was battered and terminal. Not shocked. Not a current battery. Revoltingly the older your car gets, tge less you want to spend but more you need to. $160 for the new battery. Trust Mirage No. 1: with nothing but my self interested "sense" it should've cheaper, I asked if they could "do better". Do we ask Amazon that? Our doctors? Angel said "no". Never mind the creative humorous notion that when the angels say "no", you're not gettin' into heaven. There's this: See, there's the solid steel stone rock solid fact: Jake's quote you a price, it's the best they can do - for you - not for them. I later confirmed that same basic price on line and I'm embarrassed. Shamefully, I confide in you now just between us: don't use that credo of "trust but verify with Jake's". Just trust. Trust me. Just them like your physician. But my doubt mirages grew worse. Two days, later car was dead again. Of course, a guy with a 2006 Honda with nearly 300,000 miles deserves PERFECTION when paying $160! So in a series of shrill and borderline steamed texts with Angel, I more than implied whatever the reason was, I wasn't about to pay for a second repair that should have been caught the first time. I brayed and whined about Über costs to get back and forth and more. This is before they even got a chance to look at it. I'm quite sure my posturing indignation reminded Angel of one reason why work can be less than his favorite place on earth. Angel could have retaliated in attitude or response. Not once, not even a little or a bit. Oh he's heard worse. Modestly incomed drivers of 2006 driving fumes of aging rolling metal boxes don't look at themselves in the mirror (dude, buy a new car) but hold mechanics accountable for every penny of every bill. Did Angel and Jakers find the issue upon my return? Sure. Exotic detail: Remote starter (which I didn't even know I had much less ever used): that was the drain. Answer. Did they miss it first time? Sure but it was an obscure issue 99% of mechanics would have missed. They didn't say that. I'm saying that. They kept the car for two days after I told them to simply make sure they got it right. Two days testing. They didn't tell me how long they spent on finding the issue but they charged me zero. Between keeping it to test their hypothesis and rendering a differential diagnosis ruling out any other possible drain, they likely spent a minimum of two hours if not more. Labor fees alone would have cost well over $160. And they ate it. And not the slightest flinch or wince or moan. In a lifetime of mechanics who've repaired my Hamberghini's, Norvette's, and not quite Ferrari LaFerrari's, I've been snookered and bamboozled more than a few times. But there's this great sin of the common man: they presuppose the unjust deeds of others visited upon them are the same unjust deeds they can expect from others of the same profession. I know. I still get a blank stare when I mention at times after I know full well what the beating around the Snooker Bush client questions are implying: I tell them I'm an honest attorney. I consider it a blood oath. Jake should rename this crevice of gold in a wall of less than 100% honest, reliable and true car repair shops to "Jake's Auto Owner's Care Home." read more

My Passat was having a few issues. I had originally brought it to another shop because I was in a jam and had them look at it. They quoted me for things I didnt need right away, and also told me a price that was 3x the amount that Jake did. I brought it to Jake's and asked them to look over the car. They told me what was needed right away, what could wait, and what wasnt needed. Unlike other places, they are honest and really affordable. They also explained to me why everything was needed and what to do in the future to look for to possibly avoid it happening again. The car was done in 1 day and has been running great since. Literally a God-send (if you believe in that sort of thing). I found Jake through my Aunt's congregation. Many people had used him--and every single person had a positive experience. Part of me actually doesn't want to post this review b/c I'm afraid that if he becomes too busy, it'll be hard for me to get an appointment. :( But seriously, I 've been to my share of auto mechanics and Jake is hands down the best. It's not even close. He's fair. He's honest. He's friendly. He's a real car guy. (It's like having your cars serviced by one of the guys from "Car Talk.") His prices can be unbelievably low. I have known Jake since high school. All around nice guy and honest mechanic. Knows his stuff and hes not going to BS you if you've got a lemon on your hands(I know from experience). And no way will he try and overcharge you like the crooks at Firestone. (They once quoted a job for my car at $1600, Jake and his staff did it for half that.) The location of Jakes used to be Auto Eds repair shop. My family's mechanic and mine before Auto Ed passed away a couple of years ago. With nowhere to go or no one to trust it truly was a God send for Jake to take up this location. I couldn't have asked for anyone better. He and his staff provide service to all of my family and is always my recommended mechanic to anyone. As I write this review it reminds me of the quote by Jerry Seinfeld as he explains.."Do you know what a good mechanic is worth!? You can't compare that to sex." Nuff said. read more

This was my first time at Jake's, I was looking for a reliable place to change the oil on my car. So far no issues and what was great is that the price discussed over the phone is the same price I paid, not like some other places that hit you with this, that and the other. Jake is very knowledgeable and gave me tremendous amounts of input along the way. The oil change took about 30 minutes. Jake also made a recommendation about tire rotation every 6k miles. I can't recommend Jake highly enough. I'd had an issue with the electric system in my car. The engine would just shut off while driving on the road. I got an estimate from another mechanic for $1,200. After checking it out, Jake told me that there was a wire rubbing again a loose bolt which was shorting out the system. He charged me only for his time, which was $40! He also replaced my muffler, but instead of charging me $500 for a new one, he actually searched on eBay and found one in great condition, for less than a hundred. I didn't even have to ask him to do this. More than just a mechanic, he's like "Dr. House" and takes the time to do a thorough analysis. My brother had a garage check an issue with his car. After charging him $500 for an estimate, they told him it would be a further $2,000 to fix. I recommended he take it to Jake and he fixed the issue for $420. He's the last mechanic you'll ever need and I'm obviously very happy to have met him. Josh read more

I own a '68 chevelle and was pleasantly surprised to find they worked on classic cars as well. I am one of those people that prefers to support local businesses, but aftermy experience this morning I will be taking my business elsewhere. Jake is a former employee of Auto Ed(He took over the building which that shop used to operate) where I was a customer for many years. I came by Jake's on Friday 9/11 to discuss having some work done on my vehicle - scheduling the service for 8:30 on today Monday 9/14. I arrived this morning approx. 8:15 where I was greeting by Jake. He told me "I can't service your vehicle because I have a religious function to go to this morning and we are booked this afternoon, but you can reschedule for tomorrow". I understand today is a Jewish holiday but business is business in my book. You do not make appointments with customers and not deliver. I could even understand if you tried to contact me to explain what is going on but waiting until i arrive to tell me to come back tomorrow is BS. My car was making a strange sounds as I was randomly drove by Jakes Car Care. There was a couple of people there so I was hesitant to stop and wait. But I got help right way, and they checked out my car right away. I'm not talking about just a check engine light kind of diagnostician, although I have no doubt that he would do a stellar job on that.I brought my 2008 SRT 8 Dodge Challenger to Jake for a supercharger install. Tried to buy an S4 that Jake was selling. Pictures of the car did it quite a bit of justice. He described interior as 9/10 and exterior in good shape for the age. I expected maybe a few door dings/nicks. I drove 6 hours each way, spent $200 in diesel and $20 in tolls to look at a pile. I'd rate the interior a 4/10, passenger suede seat severely worn down, door panels, center console just as bad. Roof had paint spots missing the size of my palm that were rusting. Headlight scratched up from rubbing against something, clear missing from trunklid, bottom of rear bumper scratched up pretty good, splash shields hacked up. Mechanically it ran but didn't have the power it should have. Could have been a boost leak or compression, neither which were ever checked. Overall very disappointed and sucks that it was neglected. I can't see how anyone would let someone travel so far and not be more honest about the vehicle. It's not like anyone would show up and overlook that stuff. read more
