We then contacted Sorted Estates, and the experience was exceptional. Because we were working remotely, all coordination had to be done through photographs. We sent as many images as possible and explained that our goal was to have the floating home completely cleared. They provided an estimate based on that information and followed through exactly as promised. On the scheduled day, they arrived with two trucks and a five-person crew. By the end of the day, the home was entirely empty, with two full truckloads delivered to donation sites. Communication throughout the process was clear, responsive, and professional. Given the constraints and complexity of the situation, their performance was genuinely impressive.

This IS NOT a group that endeavors to find buyers for fine furnishings and antiques. They will go to minimum effort to sell or place your things. Above all, this is a LIQUIDATION company. Unexpected Treasures' stated goal is to return your house to you absolutely clear of everything. They do that. Just expect to pay plenty for this service, regardless of what you believe to be the consignment store value of the contents. If you need someone to clear tons of things from your house (or the home of a deceased loved one) without concern for selling finer things to antique dealers, collectors, consignment stores, etc., then you should consider Unexpected Treasures. Bottom line: we paid thousands for the "privilege" of having many fine pieces given to charity, as well as having the junkier stuff and "unsaleable furniture" hauled off. Had I known their approach, I would have chosen to keep many of the items or take them to consignment myself. They didn't even mention that option, and I was lead to believe they had eager buyers just waiting in the wings. Their accounting is not transparent so you won't have a clear idea of what was sold. They only itemize items that sell for greater than $100. Sure, we have thousands worth of donation receipts from thrift stores, but that wasn't our goal. My final advice: please don't make a decision on Unexpected Treasures or any "estate sale" company without truly recognizing what you're getting. You could either be terribly disappointed or super grateful, depending on your personal goal. In our case, we were grieving and had a timetable to keep to prepare the house to sell. I know nothing about it and she informed me first about how pianos have become valueless - and I mean haul it away to the dumps! I then tried putting my mother's Steinway grand piano on ebay and learned how right she was. It sat on there for months until I cut the price to next to nothing and sold it to a man in China, who had it disassembled, crated and shipped to him. I was just lucky that Steinway is a big name in China. Next she told me how old, dark wood antique furniture no longer sells as it is not the style that younger people like. That was also proven true in the sale she conducted for us. But we had great success in her selling lots of other stuff, which paid for her colleague's labor, and for her extensive knowledge of sources, contacts, and charities to whom things could be sold or donated. The house is now clear and her firm accomplished what we could never have done in such a short amount of time. It's tough to accept how the world has changed and things that formerly had value now don't, but Judy pulled no punches in telling us the truth and for that we thank her.

I feel this happened because there weren't enough helpers working in each room. It's a well-known fact that people attend estate sales to steal, and an estate sale service needs to have a person in "every" room, monitoring the people who come and go. It is also important to only have one entrance/exit. The people at our sale could easily come in the front door and exit out the open garage (which also had no one watching it), or the side alley. So, in closing, Julia is great. Just make sure to ask up front how many people will be working your sale and who will be monitoring the small items that can be easily placed in pockets and stolen.

It would have given them a five star but as I was checking out, I noticed someone at the tables on the opposite side of me, looking at two loppers. She turned around to look at the loppers, then asked her colleague, who was stationed at the jewelry, if the loppers were on hold for someone. Instead of hearing what she was saying, he thought it was appropriate to get angry at the customer who was looking at them. He was so angry that he must have forgotten how to be a human, because basically just yelled at the customer, saying "No!" and huffed as he furiously waved to where I was standing, indicating that the customer should be on the side where I was standing. Did he think the customer couldn't speak English? Is that why he stopped using his words and just waved his hands? From a customers perspective, this was wildly off putting.
